Football players, coaches take part in Selects program

Four Weyburn football players and two coaches had great success playing with Sask Selects teams in Las Vegas last week, with their teams winning as tournament champions. They are, from left, coach Rob Umbach, Conner Kerr, Alex Junk, Owen Istace, Tiki Umbach, and coach Kyle Paterson.

Four Weyburn football players and two coaches, Rob Umbach and Kyle Paterson, traveled to Las Vegas with the Saskatchewan Selects program to take part in their pigskin classic tournament, which was held last week. Joining players from across Saskatchewan, they combined to form three teams to compete in their respective age groups, U13, U14, U15. The coaches from Weyburn helped to coach all three age group teams for the tournament. The Weyburn players, Tiki Umbach, Owen Istace, Alex Junk and Conner

Kerr, played on the U15 team. They played a team from the Las Vegas area in their first game and then a team from Kansas City. Winning both, they came home as tournament champions. Conner Kerr and Alex Junk also played on the U14 team who played a team from California in their first game and a team from Alaska in their second game. They won the first game quite easily, but the second game went to overtime and the Sask team won 17-14, making them tournament champions in their category.

I haven’t won a game in regulation yet, but

we are getting those wins,” said goaltender Jackson Fellner. “The win against Battleford felt really good. We came into the weekend wanting four points, and that is what we got.” La Ronge was first to score during the game held Monday night at Crescent Point Place, scoring during a powerplay in the first period. A goal by Drew Kuzma at the 1:25 mark in the second period, assisted by Nikolas Sombrowski, tied up the game. The Ice Wolves scored again at the

4:51 mark of the second. La Ronge scored their third goal of the night at the 7:46 mark of the third period. Sombrowski scored the second goal for Weyburn, stealing the win. Assists went to Dobson and Nicholas Kovacs. Fellner was in net, stopping 32 out of 25 shots. The Red Wings won 3-2 in a shootout over the Melfort Mustangs during their home game held at Crescent Point Place on Friday evening. Melfort started off the

game with a goal at the 6:39 mark in the first period, and then Beau Larson tied up the game with an unassisted goal for the Red Wings at the 13:24 mark. Melfort scored a power play goal in the second period. Braden Birnie tied up the game with an early goal at the 1:55 mark in the third period, assisted by Larson and Graham Skinner. There was no scoring in the overtime period. In the shoot-out round, no goals were scored by any of the three Melfort players. Ty Mason scored the game winner for Weyburn after Birnie and Davis Chorney were unsuccessful. Fellner was in net for the Red Wings, and stopped 25 out of 27 shots. The Red Wings won 4-3 in overtime over the Battlefords North Stars during another home game at Crescent Point Place on Saturday night. Mullen scored his first goal for the Wings at the 1:51 mark of the opening period, assisted by Maier and Chorney. Teddy bears

were then thrown onto the ice, for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. All bears were then donated to the Weyburn Salvation Army. In the second period, Ty Mason scored at the 8:28 mark, assisted by Sombrowski and Graham Skinner. Nearly 30 seconds later, Battleford responded with a goal of their own. In the third period, The North Stars scored an early goal at the 2:28 mark to tie the game, and then took the lead with another goal at the 7:51 mark. The Red Wings took advantage of two Battleford penalties at the 16:26 mark, when Sombrowski scored a goal to tie up the game, assisted by Kuzma and Larson. In the overtime period, Sombrowski scored at the 3:22 mark, assisted by Birnie and Ethan Whillans. Fellner stopped 30 out of 33 shots on net. The Red Wings will be in Melville for an away game on Friday, Dec. 3. They will then travel to Melfort for another away game on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings Austyn Hansen, Graham Skinner and Ian Maier press hard in defense against the Battleford Sharks, as goaltender Jackson Fellner stopped the puck.The Weyburn Red Wings won 4-3 in overtime over the Sharks, their second win at home after defeating Melfort 3-2 on Friday night.

The Big Six Hockey League began the 2021-22 season over the Nov. 19-20 weekend. The Midale Mustangs’ first game of the season was against Moosomin on Nov. 19, and they lost 11-2, followed by an 11-2 loss to Yellow Grass on Nov. 20. The Midale Mustangs then lost a game to Moosomin 9-1 on Friday, and battled the Yellow Grass

Wheat Kings on Saturday to a 7-6 loss by shootout. As of Monday, there was a five-way tie for first with four points, including Yellow Grass. Coming up on Saturday, Dec. 4, Midale will visit Wawota at 8 p.m., and Redvers will be in Yellow Grass for a game at 8 p.m. Yellow Grass will then visit Carnduff for a game on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.

Gold Wings pick up first win of the season The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings picked up their first win of the season, after claiming a 2-1 victory over the Battlefords Sharks on Saturday night. The Gold Wings were in Battleford for a pair of games over the weekend. During the first game, the Sharks scored first, with 6:04 remaining in the first period. Julianne Girardin scored with 4:59 remaining to tie up the game, assisted by Ashton Bender and Hailey Verhelst. There was no scoring in the second period. Verhelst scored unassisted during a power play with 2:07 remaining in the third period, to secure the win.

Lexi Peace was in net for the Gold Wings, stopping 31 out of 32 shots. The Sharks fought back during the Sunday afternoon game, winning 4-2 over the Gold Wings. The Gold Wings started strong, with two goals after two periods. Julianne Girardin scored both goals, with the first assisted by Ashton Bender and Rilynn Dobson, and the second assisted by Dobson and Rori Dickie. Peace was in net again, stopping 43 out of 47 shots. The Gold Wings are heading to Prince Albert for a pair of games this weekend. They play Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Legion Wings win gold at Lumsden tournament
