WCS Eagles dominate in run game, advance to 5A provincials By Sabrina Kraft The Weyburn Comp Eagles dominated in their run game, while claiming a 24-13 victory over the Bishop James Mahoney Saints in the semi-finals for provincials, played at Darold Kot Field on November 5. Running back Ben Michel had 139 yards rushing and a touchdown. Running back Austin Knupp had 168 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Ben Manning threw a 16-yard pass for a touchdown to Conner Kerr, and kicker Zack Schmidt scored a field goal. The Eagles had a total of 433 yards rushing in the game. “This is a special team that we have this year, and it felt great to win,” said Michel. “We went out there and had a great game on all cylinders. It was awesome.” “We had a great prep for the week, and knew what was coming, and what we had to do to win,”

added Michel. “It felt great to win. The intensity was good and our team came to play after a great week of practice,” said offensive line Evan Barsness.

“We prepared all week on the d-line and o-line to prepare for the Saints. I felt that we did really well at perfecting our plays and shutting them down,” added Barsness.

He added that since the Eagles finished the regular season undefeated, it was a strong continuation of their 5A football season, as they will now vie for the provincial title.

“It was a really intense game, but also a very fun game to play in,” said Knupp. “It felt great (to contribute) to the win.” “Our next goal will be to come out with a win on

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings broke an eight-game losing skid, after claiming a 5-4 overtime win over the Melville Millionaires on Nov. 5. The Red Wings started strong in the first period against the Millionaires, with captain Braden Birnie scoring at the 1:48 mark, assisted by Nikolas Sombrowski. Later in the period, Davis Chorney scored the second of the night for Weyburn, assisted by Nick Dobson and Graham Skinner. Melville rallied in the second period, scoring three goals all within the first seven minutes of play. A late goal by Drew Kuzma scored at 14:25 tied up the game, with assists from Graham Skinner and Ethan Whillans. Goals were traded in the third period, both during power plays. Sombrowski scored at the 16:26 mark, assisted by Chorney and Ty Mason. With just eight seconds left in the game, Melville scored to force

overtime. In the overtime period, Kuzma scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Nick Dobson and Simon Pollock. Jackson Fellner was in net for the Red Wings, and he stopped 29 out of 33 shots. The Humboldt Broncos shut out the Weyburn Red Wings 4-0, during a home game held on Friday night. The Broncos had one goal in the first period, one in the second, and two goals in the third period. The Red Wings were not able to capitalize on any of the 23 shots they had on the Broncos net. Fellner was in net for the Red Wings. He stopped 37 out of 41 shots on net. The Red Wings will face up against their Highway 39 rivals, the Estevan Bruins, for a home-andhome series this weekend. Estevan hosts the first game at Affinity Place on Friday, Nov. 12. Weyburn hosts the second game at Crescent Point Place on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Mission Staff named, ID camps start for 2022 Winter Games In February 2022, nearly 1,600 young athletes from every corner of the province will gather in Regina to compete in the Saskatchewan Winter Games. The first half of the Sask Winter Games will be held February 20-23, 2022, and will include: alpine skiing, artistic swimming, biathlon, Special Olympics bowling, men and women curling, gymnastics, judo, speed skating, table tennis and weightlifting. The second half of the Winter Games will be held February 23-26,

2022, and will include: badminton, cross country and Para Nordic ski, mixed doubles curling, figure skating, Futsal, s n ow b o a r d i n g , t a rg e t shooting and wrestling. There will be a Futsal ID Camp for athletes born in 2007 and 2008 held at the Weyburn Comprehensive School this month. Tryouts for table tennis will be held at Stoughton Central School on Saturday, Nov. 27. Interested athletes must pre-register on the Southeast District Saskatchewan Winter Games website by

Tuesday, Nov. 23. Team Southeast has selected their mission staff, who will lead athletes, coaches and managers from the district at the Winter Games. Representing Weyburn are Ryan Dale, Kathy Erickson, Bob King, Jacquie Van De Woestyne, Tina Clay, Joni Hagen and Dallas Cossar. In order to provide the safest possible environment for all participants, volunteers and attendees, the Saskatchewan Games Council and 2022 Saskatchewan Winter Games Host Society will require

that all individuals participating in or attending the 2022 Saskatchewan Winter Games in Regina

must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start of the event. This requirement will

extend to athletes, coaches, managers, mission staff, officials, volunteers, media, and event staff.

Weyburn Beavers baseball to return to full schedule for 2022 The Weyburn Senior Beavers have announced a full schedule for summer baseball, as they will return to the field for the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2022. The home opener for the Beavers will be Friday, May 27, when they host Swift Current at Tom Laing Park. They will have another game against Swift Current on Saturday,

May 28, and then travel to Moose Jaw for a game on Tuesday, May 31. There are 21 games on the schedule for June. Home games include June 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 17, 18, 24, 28 and 29. There are 25 games on the schedule for June, plus the All Star Game scheduled that will include players across the league. Home games in July are

set for July 2, 3, 12, 13, 15, 16, 14, 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, 30 and 31. There are only six regular games in August, and a special fan appreciation night scheduled for the last home game on Wednesday, August 3. Playoffs open up for the eight teams standing after the regular season on Monday, August 8 and will run for approximately 10 days.
