SPECIAL THANK YOU TO:

ART BEAT

HARMONY ARTS FESTIVAL 2019 FEATURED ARTIST EXHIBITION BOBBIE BURGERS: SHELTERED STATE Using flower parts and petals as a departure point, Bobbie Burgers explores the process of decay, transformation and metamorphosis in her recent abstracted works on canvas and paper. A persistent theme in her work is scale. Rendered large “she views her subjects as a landscape seen from afar, where natural elements, time and movement move across the canvas.” Known for her gestural and lushcoloured flower portraits, the artist’s recent shift to a darker palette of deep blues, reds and greys that combine drawing and collage is an evocation of both the fragility and resilience of nature in our chaotic world. In addition to paintings, Burgers works in a variety of media, including ceramic and bronze. She also creates three-dimensional works that exhibit characteristics of both painting and sculpture, which are built up using plaster, layers of paper, paint, charcoal and pencil. Her first solo show, Waterworks and Pathways, took place at the Ferry Building Gallery in 1995, when she was only 19 years old. 24 years after this sold-out show, we are honoured to present the work of this celebrated artist in this very same space. Join us for the opening reception of Sheltered State on Friday, August 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. Bobbie Burgers exhibits nationally and internationally and is represented by Equinox Gallery in Vancouver and Caldwell Snyder Gallery in California. This exhibition is co-organized by the West Vancouver Art Museum and the Ferry Building Gallery for the Harmony Arts Festival. Ferry Building Gallery Exhibition hours: Aug 2: 2–8 p.m. Aug 3–11: 12–9 p.m. Cover Image: Sheltered State, acrylic and charcoal on paper, 2018. Courtesy of the artist.

Mayor’s Welcome On behalf of Mayor and Council, I am excited to invite you to West Vancouver’s 29th annual Harmony Arts Festival. This festival is one of my favourite events of the year because it brings together our whole community and visitors to celebrate our arts in many different forms. Over 10 days and evenings, we are bringing back classic festival favourites and adding exciting new attractions. We are introducing North Shore Nights, a night market that Mayor Mary-Ann Booth features one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items and, again this year, the festival’s Art Market mainstay returns for two weekends with a wide range of exciting products to discover. Signature culinary experiences will take place on the Ambleside waterfront and pier—the Indigenous Feast, Best of the West and Night on the Pier will showcase some of the best food and drinks this region has to offer. There will also be many opportunities to enjoy pop-up restaurants and food trucks with flavours from around the globe. West Coast art is centre stage at the festival, with daily showings, family-friendly activities and an Art Beat walk through the business area. The vibrant art of the Coast Salish peoples is featured, along with a line-up of showings, workshops, demonstrations and artist talks from other talented local artists. You will also find free daytime and evening concerts, Cinema in the Park, an author reading, activities for kids and much more. Each year I attend, the festival gives me a renewed appreciation of our beautiful waterfront with the breathtaking mountains as the backdrop. I enjoy seeing all of the familiar faces who contribute year after year to our community in many areas—arts and culture, sports and recreation, and to our schools, parks, creeks, library and so much more. I would like to thank the generous sponsors, suppliers and many local businesses that contribute each year, as well as the volunteers for their commitment and positive energy to make this festival a huge success. As you may know, Mayor and Council’s vision is to make West Vancouver a more liveable, vibrant and inclusive community. In this spirit, we encourage you to attend with neighbours, family and friends. I look forward to seeing you at the festival! For those of you I know, please make sure to say hello. For those of you who I haven’t met, please introduce yourself!

The Harmony Arts Festival acknowledges that West Vancouver is on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Squamish Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Musqueam Nation. We recognize and respect them as nations in this territory, as well as their historic connection to the lands and waters around us since time immemorial.
