Churchville Elementary School students have questions for Library Media Specialist Katie Andres and visiting barn expert Town of Chili Historian Pete Widener. Provided photo.
A legacy learned at Churchville Elementary continued from front page On May 12, Town of Chili Historian Pete Widener visited the school and shared archival images and a special presentation on local barns. He explained to students some of the difficulties owners face in preserving heritage barns. Time, weather, economic forces, as well as the changing nature of farming, have all been hard on
the structures. Over the past 20 years, an alarming number of Chili’s barns have been lost forever. Students asked questions and shared some of their own creative ideas for bringing new life to barns. They were encouraged by hearing that their artwork will go on display at the Chili Public Library in late June, hopefully inspiring others in the community to think about how barns can be saved. Billy Mason Memorial Scholarship awarded The Board of Directors of the Billy Mason Memorial Foundation has selected Austin Mandarano as the first recipient of a $1,000 scholarship awarded in Billy’s memory. Billy was a well known Spencerport resident and three-sport star at Spencerport High School from 1969 to 1971. After his untimely death in May of 2021, friends and family established the Foundation in his memory. The Billy Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund honors Billy’s commitment to athletic excellence, leadership, work ethic, and personal integrity to inspire and support other

athletes to embrace these same characteristics, both on and off the athletic field. Austin’s AP science teacher, Nancy Mancuso, says Austin has done exactly that. “Austin is always willing to help others and lead by example. He is a humble person, willing to do the work and not look for accolades or recognition.” Austin, a member of the National Honor Society, played for both school and travel teams in lacrosse and soccer. Ms. Mancuso states he is highly respected by both his peers and teachers. “I admire his enthusiasm and high level of maturity. I respect and hold Austin in high regards as both a person and a student. He has worked hard to succeed in high school and is more than ready for the challenges that will greet him in college. There is no question that he will go far and prosper in his life. I can’t wait to see what Austin does in his future – I have no doubt I will be hearing about great things he accomplishes.” The Billy Mason Memorial Foundation is holding a fundraising golf tournament on July 9 at the Timber Ridge Golf Club to continue to be able to fund scholarships in Billy’s memory.
