Academic Enrichment Series
Welcome all thinkers and communicators! The West Sacramento Community Center is hosting a summer series for students in which we review the most important parts of writing, speaking, and sharing with others. Each camp can be taken individually, or enroll in the entire series for comprehensive learning fun!

June 12 – 16 | Creative Writing
Students in this class will take their ideas and put them into words. All ideas are encouraged as we build comfort in writing and sharing our work. Along with the basic rules of writing, we will also cover common core concepts such as brainstorming, outlining, comprehension, and personal style. All of this will be with examples of different creative writing styles for the students to choose and enjoy!
June 26 – 30 | Conversation
This course is focused on comfort with others. Conversation can be a challenge for anyone, so we will start with skills and styles of speaking that work with any situation. Along with these skills, we will also explore different types of conversations like one-onone talks, group discussions, and e-communications. As we learn how to practice these ideas, students are encouraged to bring their own conversation ideas to class!
July 17 – 21 | Academic Writing
In this course we will take the ideas and school assignments of students to learn more about writing styles reviewed by teachers. Our class will cover the basics of common core writing, plus more advanced writing skills including format, citation, and feedback. Along with these skills we will also dive deeper into the ideas students want to write about, and how to share their ideas with teachers!

July 31 - August 4 | Crazy Chemworks

Get ready to lose your mind in the vast and exciting world of chemistry! This camp is full of reactions, observations, solutions, suspensions, explosions, concoctions, propulsions, digestions, reflections, and Dalmatians (kidding), just to name a few! You will challenge your friends in the lab ware game, combat evaporation, be amazed at the awesome power of glue technology and trigger some shocking chemical reactions. You’ll snoop out counterfeit money, launch chemical explosions (not TOO big) and learn how and why the chemical world works. Dive into our fantastically fun pool of chemical experimentation! Just don’t mix this one with that one or you might blow up the universe!
August 7-11 | Detective Madness
Like to solve mysteries? Crack the case? You will step into the shoes of a real detective. Use science to uncover evidence and analyze the hidden secrets of a case. Put cool sleuthing tools and proven forensic techniques to work and unravel mysteries that would stump even Sherlock Holmes! Ok, well maybe they would fool your brother. But they’d be CRAZY to think they can fool Detective You!

June 5 - 9 | Cartoon Adventures in Space
Futuristic scenes of other worldly adventures highlight the spectacular drawings our students will create. Not only will students learn how to illustrate science fiction-inspired characters and moments, but they will also strengthen their drawing and coloring skills. From astronauts in jet packs to out-of-this-world alien life-forms, students will learn how to compose welldrawn cartoon figures in dynamic poses.
June 19 - 23 | Fashionistas: Anime/Manga
If you love all things Manga and Fashion, sign up for this class. Artists will learn to draw anime style fashion characters ranging from simple to elaborate– this is a great way to combine fashion designing skills and learn new manga tricks. Each day students will complete multiple pieces of artwork like manga hairstyles, school uniforms, fantasy costumes and more ARTastic drawings.
July 10 - 14 | Draw Cartoons- Character Creation
Learn the basics of cartooning and create your own characters! Each day students will learn techniques used in cartooning. Subjects like characteristics, features, exaggeration, action and personification will contribute to your child’s artistic advancement! Students will immediately apply their new skills in every class to create their own original cartoon characters.
July 24 - 28 | African Safari
Go on a Safari adventure! We will explore the exciting land and many animals that inhabit Africa. We will draw a variety of animals in various scenes with different media. To keep things exciting, we will explore the African Safari through the fun technique of cartoon as well. We will also challenge our artistic talents by creating 2 large scenes – one in a graphic style filled with a variety of animals and another focusing on the twists and turns of an African snake. Our exploration through Africa allows for a bounty of adventure and creativity.
