Infrastructure

Weston Williamson + Partners

We are a team of 150 professionals in the UK, Australia and Canada, of 15 nationalities, working flexibly and collaboratively with clients and the wider industry. Our diverse international team members bring their own unique backgrounds and perspectives to projects and to the people that we work with. We are natural collaborators, keen to talk, to listen and to understand. It is by working closely with everyone involved – clients, stakeholders, colleagues and end users - that we deliver successful projects.

We are a design-led practice, full of people who relish a challenge and with a strong record of delivery. Our work is all about the people who use it; how they will inhabit and experience the buildings, places and artefacts that we design. We take a whole life approach, considering how our designs will adapt, retain their relevance and continue to be enjoyed for years to come. Our ambition is simple but expansive, shaping cities for the future, involving transport, master planning, public space, environment and living. People are at the heart of everything we do. We want to design buildings and places that are a pleasure to use and create civilised beautiful environments that enrich lives. We specialise in creating solutions for complex projects, large or small, international and local. We get to the essence of what people need from buildings and spaces, listening, challenging and responding to clients and stakeholders with elegant, bold solutions. We set out a clear and engaging vision that helps people get involved with the design and the process.

Infrastructure

As our cities grow, and more of the population moves into them, we need infrastructure that can keep pace, delivering the fundamental systems and facilities that maintain them. We work on all types of infrastructure - from major city wide tunnel schemes and bridges to smaller local projects, including road improvements and green infrastructure schemes.

We celebrate infrastructure, using it as a way to create places for people to enjoy. We have a strong tradition of working with engineers and artists to invigorate our urban fabric, moving it beyond the purely functional to places that enrich people’s lives.

The use of green infrastructure is increasingly important; our approach is founded on the belief that we need to do more with less, embracing invention and multi-disciplinary collaboration to achieve greater value and flexibility from our infrastructure. We embrace change to help us deliver the cities of tomorrow.

Thames Tideway

London, UK Collaborative working Integrated artwork Stakeholder engagement

The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal River Thames from pollution. We are leading the architectural team for five riverside sites at the eastern end of the project, which involves designing several key above-ground structures including ventilation shafts. Working closely with artists we are integrating artworks to all shaft sites as well as delivering hard and soft landscaping. At a number of the sites the arrival of Thames Tideway provides the opportunity to create new public realm in partnership with the local community.

Rail Baltica River Bridge

Riga, Latvia Historic setting Viaduct structure Integrated transport hub

The new multi-modal transport hub in Riga includes a rail and pedestrian/cycle bridge. The bridge sits harmoniously next to the existing historic railway bridge and is an integral part of the new viaduct infrastructure that links it to the renovated Riga Central railway station.

Elizabeth Line Urban Shafts

London, UK Urban locations Over-site development Landscaping

As design lead for five shafts on the Elizabeth line route we ensured these technically complex structures were carefully integrated into the urban landscape and enabled for over-site development. At each of the sites we provided landscaping to integrate the shaft with its surroundings which ranged from local parks to industrial areas ready for redevelopment.

Silvertown Pedestrian Bridge

London, UK Urban connections Complex bridge infrastructure

This new Thames crossing at Silvertown links new development to the existing Royal Docks Area, connecting the old and new communities. The bridge is presented as a ripple in the urban landscape, a contrast between the linear design of Barrier Park and the linear experience of travelling on the DLR.

Euston HS2 Vent Shaft and Headhouse

London, UK Façade design ntegration of technical requirements Urban integration

As part of the HS2 enabling works at Euston, the existing London Underground substation and vent shaft building requires relocation. The new contemporary structure is rooted in the landscape and in the traditions of railway architecture, creating a beautifully crafted object that wears its function lightly. The design of the façade was key and uses faience tiles, tilted, angled and perforated to meet the ventilation requirements, while creating a dynamic pattern.

Salford Meadows Bridge

Salford, UK Iconic landmark Integration into landscape

This pedestrian footbridge will revitalise the Salford Meadows area. Spanning the banks of the River Irwel, it creates a new connection between Salford Meadows and the Crescent Conservation Area. With a highly urban context on one approach, and a natural context on the other, the bridge acts as a mediator between the two conditions, responding to its setting to create an iconic visible landmark, which belongs inherently to its setting.

HS2 Curzon Street Approach Viaducts

Birmingham, UK Complex stakeholder engagement Balancing cost, programme, safety and design Public realm enhancement

HS2 will arrive into Birmingham’s new Curzon Street station along the Curzon Street Approach Viaducts which are divided into three sections. Due to the size of these structures and their location they will be a significant addition to Birmingham’s skyline and to the life of the city. The design of the viaduct maximises daylight, permeability and wayfinding using a holistic geometrical alignment between the pier and viaduct. The opportunity is created for usable and flexible public spaces under the structures.

Victoria Station Vent Shafts

London, UK New urban realm Sensitive heritage context Integration with over-site development

While the majority of works to upgrade the capacity at Victoria Station are underground, considerable attention was given to how the shafts interface with the sensitive above ground urban landscape. Our designed aimed to integrated the variety of functional requirements into a single architectural object, minimising clutter and maximising development potential.

Blackfriars Interchange

London, UK Multi-modal transport interchange Enhanced river access Public realm improvements

Our proposals for the Thameslink Station at Blackfriars built on the spectacular setting of the existing station above the river with improved interchange facilities. Riverboat pontoons exploit the valuable riverside location with floating restaurants and cafés that become an integral part of the travel experience. Direct, stepfree interchange from Thameslink platforms via the new jetty connect to the Riverboat pontoon and new public spaces, to provide new riverside entrances to the Thameslink station.

Paddington Elizabeth line

London, UK Listed heritage environment Public realm incorporation

The heritage constraints at Paddington Station have required the ventilation structures to be visible, whereas usually they would be integrated into the station box. The vent structures incorporate the architectural principles of the station building through the use of the same canopy module and the same colour and treatment of the structural frame. The design successfully assimilates this ventilation unit into the station and new public realm minimising the impact on passengers.
