The mapping project focused on extracting and overlaying various information that primarily makes city. It was an attempt to create a series of cellular fabric based on the given site which served as the central node.

As the diagrams demonstrate, the project revealed a palimpsest of information of how the city functions. It explored what makes city, and the idea behind a naturally-evolving city as a lattice system that intersects at a multitude of scales.

The semester is based on thinking of architecture as a greater whole. Thinking and addressing how it stands and interacts on an urban scale down to how it interacts with humans on a scale such as an apartment. This notion of zooming in and out will appear throughout the semester, this exercise is to develop a design on the scale of an apartment.

Collectively assessing each of these by definition, then by a few thoughts that come to mind, was an exercise to help establish a strong and appropriate design foundation and thought process. There were four limb ideas per core component, which totalled 12 items. These ideas are further broken up into two categories, one that includes the idea in the design, the other that will challenge the idea. Challenging it entails rethinking the status quo of each idea, the direction it’s heading, and how to incorporate it within the design in a novel way. All accompanying parts to the “student” section and “teaching[4]” within the “education” section will to be provided for in the design, although won’t carry a heavy weight for design decisions. The components which I’ve placed to have the most importance are “smart buildings[6], technology[7], and density[9].”

This step in the design process included taking the project brief and breaking it up into its three core components. It called for a housing project, for students, with education as a driver of design. This will contribute to the semester’s notion of zooming in and out and having a mulitscalar approach to design as it attempts to view these components through various lens and discover how they are interwoven pieces to the project.

The goal is to rethink the ways in which we currently know these things. The unit design is to include a level of smart building technology. This entails a design/space that is controllable and responsive to things such as solar conditions etc. To further develop this, and to begin including “education” will be a design responsive to human input. It will be capable of responding to solar condition, but will require the user to be more engaged and aware of what’s going on. The idea of density will be creating high density without the psychological feeling of cramped and small spaces.

THE SEARCH FOR INTERCONNECTIVITY IN THE CITY The goal at this stage is to create an educational space that provides the feeling of being larger than it actually is. There are various design actions that can be taken to maximise spatial use, but I’m focusing on transformable space through the use of folding, sliding, and other kinetic built-in systems. Many such systems have been around for years and many new, robotic-like systems are emerging in the industry today. My challenge is to avoid the “robot,” yet keep innovative technology, and force the user to be engaged in the transformation. This begins to address current issues with the notion of timely vs. timeless design. There’s a trend for designers and creatives to house their homes and offices in old, renovated, warehouse-like buildings. It’s apparent these places are charming and have a high level of timelessness. I searched for precedents that afford my desired notion of contrasting transforming space with old-school systems. This to be done by the proper use of materials, and kinetic systems tangent to human input rather than a remote control.

Pulleys provide space-transforming mechanics while having the user fully engaged, aware, and in control of the action.

Folding can make a dramatic change in appearance, control solar exposure, and be operated by a user-operated pulley.

Pulleys on a smaller scale carry through the design to control furniture, etc.

The unit is designed to allow for transformable configurations, yet the base layout is important to address. The unit is first simply broken up into public and private spaces, where private is located on the side of the unit where the entrance is, and the public space is on the side of the balcony. Private is broken into spaces that house the bedroom and bathroom, and public into the kitchen and living/outdoor spaces.

THE SEARCH FOR INTERCONNECTIVITY IN THE CITY As education was the drive for design, it was important to keep close attention to both the rudimentary fundamentals and abstract concepts of education by definition, the unit results in a complex palimpsest of layered goals. The unit affords a place for traditional learning to take place, but also provides a space that learns as well as teaches by means of responsive components. These components are avant-garde in challenging the status quo of building smart architecture as the key to solving environmental, social, and other issues. It responds less to natural phenomena but more importantly human input. This is a way of establishing a new archetype of how we perceive space and sense our environment.

The aforementioned components I’ve introduced are a series of kinetic systems that create a dynamically-flexible space. The space is transformable and adaptable. Storage bins flip out of the floor. Partitions become a space to store a bed as they slide across the floor. A kitchen island and a dining room table slide out of an otherwise unknown space in solid joinery. Aiming to allow these spaces to transform as a result of human input, I’ve introduced nonmodern levers and pulleys to control them. This forces the user to engage in the process of the transforming space. As can be noted by the various folding and efficient use of space, all design components include a byproduct. e.g. the walls (partitions) are room separators, but also provide storage and shelving.

[INTER]weave is a project that explores connection throughout cities and attempts to find and become the connective tissue between a range of scales including space-to-space, building-to-building, practicing-to-precint, and how these things then start to - potentially - inform the built environment by creating a holistic mending to the urban fabric. The scales focused on varies and began with an apartment unit and evolved into a mixed use building. With the overarching theme of connection in place, the project was approached by a series of social, environmental, and historical studies. The overall apartment configuration resulted in an attempt to maximize sun access. This move also created a void facing the UPN and became an opportunity to establish the connection between the building and the UPN. This done by accepting and bringing in the UPN onto the building site and vice versa. The site is home to an industrial history. It’s location is facing a retired railway track. The railway served as a connection between Darling Harbour and Surry Hills, thus encompasses the notion of connectivity itself. The historical relevance informed the building material. The apartment units are made of recycled shipping containers. This speaks directly to the railway and is a means to celebrate the site’s history. The choice of shipping

containers provided a very modular system for the project where units are essentially slid in to place and supported by an exoskeleton steel frame. The rigid frame meets the courtyard area with extreme juxtaposition with a dynamic and fluid concrete surface that extends into the UPN.

The primary use of the UPN as it stands now serves is a pathway used by commuters. It became important not to obstruct what’s already there by design proposals interferring with the simplistic functionality of its current state. This notion of a simple point A to point B was reserved and the UPN was then designed around those parameters.

Touching on the idea of the UPN being connective tissue for buildings it rests between, those points of interest are focused on creating a direct path to the UPN.
