CAMP NOTES Brigid O’ Connor 1916 Rising Commemoration It was a wonderfully emotive weekend of celebration in Camp, when Camp Community Council raised the National, Kerry and Camp flag on Sunday last 24th April marking the momentous history of the Rising 100 years ago. Distinguished guests, All-Ireland Football medal holders for Kerry, Sean Murphy and Tommy Doyle, joined Brigid Moran, Eoghan O’Dhuibhne, Paud Herlihy and Brigid O’Connor in the ceremonious raising of the flags. The Proclamation was read by Martin Quirke, Gene Finn, Sheila O’Donnell and Sean O’ Moráin while the young children of Camp entertained on the tin whistle and Nora Rice sang “Banna Strand.” Our parish Priest, Fr. Gerry Keane and Rev. Phyllis Jones, Church of Ireland performed the blessing of the Community Field and facilities. On Saturday a Time Capsule containing memorabilia from all organisations was placed in the Garden of Remembrance to be re-opened in 50 years time. Later that evening the circus performance in the Community Hall was again a great success. And one on the highlights of the weekend was the Historical Talk and workshop, memorabilia and artefacts exhibition at the Old School. Seamus O’Donnell, Eoghan O’Duibhne and Sean O’Moráin’s delivery of local and National History was outstanding and congratulations to them on their research and work which will be compiled in a Magazine later this year. Sheila O’Donnell, Brid Brosnan and Mary Knightly did outstanding work in preparation of events and Gene Finn, Cathaoirleach Camp Community Council deserves the highest commendation for pulling all strands together and on his Trojan work in the community field for months in preparation of this historical weekend. Thank you to all who attended and to Camp Community Council members and everybody involved in any way in the organisation of this very historic weekend for the community of Camp. Camp people at home and abroad were remembered at the event on Sunday as well as those gone before us and those yet to be born and the pride of
place in our village and our people and the achievements of community past and present was fully acknowledged and manifest in the events of Camp Rising 1916.

Súilóid Mhór na n-Óglaigh And early on Saturday morning over 45 patriotic West Kerry men and women reenacted the 1916 march from Ballyferriter to Tralee when West Kerry Volunteers made history marching to meet the “Aud” and Roger Casement in Banna Strand. History tells us that the march ended in The Rink at the Basin just outside Tralee, where they joined with others in bringing Roger Casement’s colleague, Monteith to a safe house. The beckoning light at The Railway Tavern was very welcome to the weary travellers who had only stopped once back the road in Tomásín for delicious soup and sandwiches. Our own local singer Nora Rice gave a lovely rendition of the song Banna Strand and following teas and coffees and refreshments provided by Mike O’Neill, the march set off again refreshed and very appreciative, for the final leg of the journey to Tralee.
