Yoga, along with meditation, helps to regenerate and repair cells, decrease anxiety, and improve your mood. We will be practicing a variety of yoga styles for every “body”. This class incorporates mudras and mantras.

My journey to fitness, movement and mindfulness goes all the way back to 1991 when I began studying martial arts. In 2017 I became a certified Hatha Yoga instructor and feel I really found my place on the mat as I truly enjoy helping people. I expanded my yoga training to include Prenatal, Yin Yoga, and most recently Mom & Tot classes.

I recently moved back to the Okanagan from Beaumont, Alberta and started working as a lifeguard and swim instructor here. I really enjoy the atmosphere at JBMAC as it’s a tight knit “community” where everyone is super nice and supportive. When I’m not hanging out at the pool I love to hike and spend time outdoors. I am passionate about animals as I have three dogs and two cats at home.

Sledding Safety Tips Use Safe Gear

• Inspect your gear for damage before using. • Wear a helmet to prevent head injuries - a winter sports helmet is best. • Wear warm clothing appropriate to the weather conditions - mittens, gloves, hat, waterproof snow pants, winter jacket and snow boots. Avoid scarves as they can get caught in a sled. • A steerable wooden sled with flexible metal runners is recommended for children ages 6-12yrs. Inner tubes, saucers and snow disks are not recommended because of their fast speed and lack of steering capability.

Find a Safe Spot

• Find a hill that is not too steep and has a long flat area at the bottom to gradually slow you down to a stop. • Avoid hills that end near a street, parking lot, pond, trees, fences, cliffs or other hazards. • Don’t sled where it’s overcrowded to avoid collisions with others. • Make sure the hill is smooth with no bumps, rocks, poles, branches or trees in the sledding path. • Sled during the day when visibility is better. For sledding at night, make sure the path is well lit.

West Kelowna Recreation Guide • Register online at www.westkelownacity.ca

Winter 2024

778-797-8800

• Keep your eyes open for other sledders at all times. Teach children to watch where they are going on the way down and move out of the way and look up immediately when they finish a run. • Teach children to roll off a sled that won’t stop. • Have a responsible adult there to supervise at all times and young children (5 and under) should sled with an adult. • Everyone should sit facing forward on their sleds with their feet downhill. To prevent a serious head injury, never go down face first. Never stand on a sled. • Everyone should go down the hill one at a time and only one person per sled (except for adults with young children 5 and under). • Don’t build a jump on a sledding hill. • Keep arms and legs within the sled at all times. • Walk up the side of the hill and leave the middle of the hill open for other sledders.

Be Safe While Sledding

Staying Active in Winter There are lots of seasonal activities that you can only do during winter – take advantage of the cooler temperatures and change in season! Some examples include: • Outdoor ice skating • Cross country skiing • Snowshoeing • Build a snowman or snow angel • Skiing or downhill skiing • Sledding In West Kelowna try: Ranch Park, Broadview Park and Rosewood Park. See page 49 for safety tips.

City of West Kelowna recreation and culture

778-797-8800

• If you like to walk, why not try the Indoor Walking Track at Royal LePage Place Arena, see page 71. • Have a free evening with nothing to do? See page 38 for the Children/Youth/Family Drop-in gym program and page 42 for the Adult Sports & Hockey Schedule. It’s a great way to get a little exercise and have some fun, no commitment required! • Try an indoor sports league – soccer and volleyball are both offered in West Kelowna – see page 40 for all the info. Plan ahead

Winter weather can be unpredictable - monitor the weather and plan ahead.

Everyday ways to keep moving all year long: • Take the stairs whenever possible at home or at work. • Get up from your desk and do some quick stretches when you are at work. • Housework does count! Put on your favorite music and get moving! • Sneak in some exercise during TV time – try some jumping jacks, pushups or sit ups while enjoying your favorite TV show or movie.

You’ll hardly notice the lower temperature if you dress for the weather! Most experts recommend layering your clothing for outdoor activities and includes: • Base Layer: transports moisture off the skin and moves it towards the surface to evaporate. Examples include Merino wool or synthetic polyester or polypropylene fabrics. • Mid-layer: adds insulation and traps heat to keep you warm. Fleece is a good example. • Outer Layer: Your final layer is your shell and it should be wind and water resistant. Stay hydrated

50

Try to find somewhere where you can do your favorite activity indoors:

Winter 2024

You’ll need to drink lots of water when you are active, even when it’s cold outside.

General Registration starts November 27 • JBMAC Swim Lessons Registration starts December 13

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, BGC Okanagan, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

• Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

So ALL Kids Can Play!

778-797-8800

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 18 and under. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the financial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs. For more information see the West Kelowna Recreation and Culture website at www.westkelownacity.ca/everyoneplays or call the City of West Kelowna at 778-797-8800.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the Jumpstart program.
