Full refunds will be given up to 48 hours in advance of program start date. there will be a $10 administration fee if you withdraw from a program after 48 hours

• Refunds will not be issued after the beginning of the third class.

• Refunds (full/partial) will be processed anytime for all programs with a doctor’s note.

Summer is coming: “Water Smart” Your little ones!

JBMac is one of the very few recreation facilities in B.c. that provides a “pool play time” included in selected early childhood Programs. Benefits:

Practice water safety and basic swimming skills. Become comfortable wearing a lifejacket or puddle jumper.

Expectations of Adults Swimming with Children

All children under 7yrs must be within arm’s reach of a responsible adult (16yrs +) at all times in/and around the pool.

We expect adults with children to:

• Actively engage with children in the water. ie: safely enter and exit the water, maintain sight and attention of children in your care.

• encourage the safe use of all equipment such as: slides, diving boards, mats and boats.

• help lifeguards enforce safety pool rules support facility rules such as: no running, no standing on or diving off mats.

• encourage safety skills. teach children to wait for an adult when they come to water. ie: stop, look and listen.

**Preschool Participation Protocols for Parents**

Mini-Campers & Little Green Thumbs

• Your preschooler muST be fully potty trained

• For your preschooler’s safety he/she must be able to understand and follow instructions.

• If your preschooler requires medication to be given in the class or needs behavioral support, please contact the recreation Program coordinator prior to registration.

• Bring a Nut-Free snack or lunch (where applicable).

• Be “Swim ready”.

• Have a sun hat, sunglasses (optional) and water bottle.

• Apply sunscreen at home.

• Wear runners or closed toe shoes. (No flip flops or Crocs please)

**Bonus: We are one of the very few recreation facilities in B.c. that provides a “Water Play time” in selected early childhood Programs.

Swim for Life Preschool Lessons 3-5yrs

the swim for life Preschool program teaches preschoolers the basics of swimming through games, songs, activities, and drills. an emphasis is placed on providing Water smart challenges so children can make smart decisions in and around water. this is a fun, playbased program for preschoolers.

this level teaches preschoolers to move comfortably in the water. they will learn submersion skills, assisted front and back floats and glides. Water safety is introduced by teaching children to stay away from water unless they are with an adult.

New! As per the Lifesaving society’s recommendations, Swimmers 3-6 will now be 45-minute classes. this will allow for additional time to work on technique and endurance while still allowing time for water safety skills.

this level provides more technical practice with front and back crawl. Whip kicks on the back are introduced and evaluated for 10-metres. children are taught to dive and be water smart on where and when to swim.

endurance is tested through a 300-metre swim. swimmers work on sprints for short distances and have increased distance swims for front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke, refining their techniques and developing efficiency. Swimmers increase their knowledge in lifesaving skills by learning all three lifesaving kicks and performing a 10-metre underwater swim to recover a submerged object.

the second level of the patrol program is swimmer 8, also known as ranger Patrol. challenges include:

• A 200-metre swim.

• Perfecting front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke for increased distances.

• Recognize different victim types and how to safely rescue a drowning person without putting themselves in jeopardy.

• Choking rescues on oneself and others are taught.

The final level before entering the Lifesaving Society’s Bronze medal programs is swimmer 9, also known as star Patrol. challenges include:

• A 600-metre workout combining a warm-up, stroke drills, speed work, and cool down.

• A 300-metre swim.

• Enter the water with an aid, swim 25-metres and tow a victim back to their point of origin and carry a 10lb object using legs only for 25-metres.

• Recognize and care for a person experiencing a severe allergic reaction.

the nl award builds on the skills and knowledge learned in the Bronze courses to develop the practical skills required by lifeguards. candidates must be 15yrs by the last day of the course. Families will be contacted by email prior to the beginning of the course and asked to either email or bring copies of all pre-requisites to the front desk. all course materials included in price; whistle, stocked fanny pack and manuals.

pre-req’s: proof of birthdate, Bronze cross and standard First aid cPr-c from one of the following recognized agencies: canadian red cross, lifesaving society, st. John’s ambulance, canadian ski Patrol, heart and stroke Foundation.
