Continued from Page 1 “The remarkably intact building … stylistically represents a shift away from the strict tenets of the International Style. “Austere, rational and elegant, the building is an extraordinary example of Don Hendry Fulton’s designs, which also included buildings for remote company towns, laboratories and prefabricated buildings for the scientific bases [in] the Antarctic. “Commissioned by BP Australia Ltd as the flagship for its second refinery in Australia, the building has a strong association with BP, a major petroleum company, first established in Australia in 1920. It demonstrates the desire of the company to create a high quality corporate image against the backdrop of an industrial plant.”
The building was opened in 1966 by Premier Sir Henry Bolte. Mr Fulton said he remembered opening day clearly as the Premier had to leave early to meet United States President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who served from 1963-1969. The building is leased by the Western Port Oberon Association and is used as a museum. Its Otama submarine is moored nearby in Western Port, where it has been at anchor for more than 10 years awaiting permission to be brought ashore. The vandalism of the former BP building, others nearby including at the Crib Point fuel jetty opposite, drag racing along The Esplanade/Woolleys Rd and a fire in bush and part of an old BP workshop in mid-2012 shows this part of Crib Point is like the Wild West.
