Shire extends Belgravia links
Entry dispute over aged care home RESIDENTS wanting to hear more about a proposed 75-bed aged care home at Balnarring were meeting with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council officers today (Tuesday 18 December) at Balnarring hall. Residents’ spokesperson Janet Eyles said those opposing the Arcare home fronting Brooksby Avenue had submitted their objections to the council and would meet at 10am. “The council have sent us all a letter informing us that they are organising a conference for all interested parties,” she said. “This is to explain planning procedures and discuss the matters of concern and clarify areas where resolution may occur.” Ms Eyles said residents did not oppose the home itself. “We are not against the facility, just the design with the main entry in our quiet semi-rural street,” she said. “They have an alternative entry at the current address, 51 Balnarring Road, but they have chosen to design the entry point in our street which we believe is going to have a huge impact on all the existing residents through extra traffic, random parking in the street and safety issues, especially bushfire risk.” Arcare spokesperson Matt Archdall said the company had lodged a full set of plans, traffic impact assessment, arboriculture assessment, landscape plans, planning report and waste management plan to council. “We’ve been in close contact with council throughout this process, and their preliminary assessment was that all required information had been submitted to allow the proposal to progress to the next stage,” he said.

improving the experience and sporting programs at our facilities”. “Council will retain ownership and maintenance of the building and remains committed to ensuring sport, leisure and recreation service are available to our community,” he said. Belgravia Leisure area manager Ben Walker said the company was excited by the appointment. “We are looking forward to making the Somerville Recreation Centre – council’s only four-court stadium – a community hub through indoor sports, such as basketball, badminton and netball, as well as a variety of wellness classes, including reformer Pilates, yoga and meditation classes,” he said. “Belgravia Leisure understands there is a lot of history attached to this facility with the devastating

fire in May 2016 and we are keen to restore the sporting heart of Somerville from May 2019.” Western Port Basketball Association operations manager Tyler Molloy said the rebuild was an exciting time not only because of the new stadium. “The whole association is using this as a rebranding opportunity with new logos and colours on the way,” he said. “The stadium will present us with the opportunity to expand our membership base as we had outgrown the two-court venue. “Many of our younger members would not have experienced what it was like to have a home court given it will be close to three years since [the stadium] was burnt down.” For details of the Somerville Recreation Centre rebuild visit mornpen.vic.gov.au/somervillerec
