Be Neighbourly

Hair’s looking at you, kid By Stephen Taylor A LITTLE girl’s empathy with the plight of those suffering from cancer has prompted her to take a stand - and inspire others. Moorooduc Primary preppie Jessica Bakaniozos, 5, was so touched with a recent Camp Quality fundraiser for cancer treatment that she decided with the support of her parents and her school - to donate her long hair to be made into a wig for children suffering the effects of cancer treatment. The background to the story is that, tragically, one of the school’s pupils is undergoing cancer treatment, which prompted the fundraiser by the stu-

dents’ representative council who ran a Crazy Hair day afterwards. About $300 was raised on the day. Part of the event involved a puppet show, ‘How to support a friend with cancer’, showing how treatment often resulted in patients losing their hair. Wearing a wig could make them feel better. Now, as part of a family day to raise money for the Cancer Council, and hosted by Jessica’s mum, Bianca Bakaniozos, the staff at Dirty Little Secrets hairdressing salon in Hastings will cut off Jessica’s long locks on Friday 30 May. “When she first said she’d like to cut off her hair I thought ‘Maybe she’s not

serious’,’’ Mrs Bakaniozos said. “But when I saw she was I looked around for ladies to make the wig.’’ A city wig maker has been selected. They’ll do the job for free. Once the wig is finished, Jessica can nominate a recipient, or one will be chosen by the Cancer Council. “So far Jessica has raised more than $400 – and it’s going up,” Mrs Bakaniozos said. Moorooduc Primary vice principal Susan Cahill is impressed. “You don’t see that type of empathy or integrity in many children these days, especially as young as Jessica. She’s a wonderful little girl.

BEACHES of Mornington will host a fundraiser on behalf of The Luke Batty Foundation this weekend. Booking agency Peninsula Band Host has booked four music acts to perform at the venue on Sunday 18 May. James & Sarah, Sean Harvey, Pete & Joel and Bonsai will play live and there will be prizes, raffles a silent auction and more. Face painting will also make it a family fundraising day. Entry is free. Funds raised will be donated to help children effected by family violence. The fundraiser will be held at Beaches, 55 Barkly St, Mornington on Sunday 18 May at 1.30-6pm. Call 5975 0966.

“I am intrigued that this cause resonated with the littlest people who were still settling in at school – after all, they had only been here three or four weeks. It’s nice to see that level of empathy.’’ Donations to support Jessica’s worthwhile cause can be made directly through the cancer council website http://vic.cancercouncilfundraising. org.au/jessbakahairdonation or via Jessica, who has registered herself as a charity with the number 763223. Mrs Bakaniozos hoped Jessica’s generous gesture will inspire others to dig deeper and show they care for sufferers of the insidious disease.
