STOKE ABBOT

This is a comparatively short walk of about three and a half miles but allow plenty of time for climbing steep hills and pausing to admire fantastic views. The village has lots of ancient buildings and few modern ones. Start by visiting the Church which has both ancient and modern features including some lovely stained glass windows. Try hugging the yew tree to see if you agree with my estimate that it’s about 19 feet in circumference at chest height. Then walk up the road, northwards, and around the corner to the New Inn (which doesn’t look new!). Opposite the pub is the start of a footpath that takes you at first northwards past a pottery and then swings to the left, north-west up a hollow way which emerges onto open downland giving views of a Roman fort on top of Waddon Hill as well as of the landscape to the south and east. At the far side of the field the path descends some steep steps to join a road where you turn right and trudge up to Stoke Knapp giving views of Lewesdon Hill which includes Dorset’s highest point. Turn right and join a footpath heading east along Waddon Hill below the hill fort to which, unfortunately, there’s no public access. There are fantastic views to the north and east, looking down towards Beaminster. After about half a mile you’ll see down on your left a pond at the head of a beautiful gwyle heading north. Continue along the path until you get to the farmhouse at Chartknolle where you turn right and join a bridleway through an avenue of trees. You descend onto a hollow way that takes you steeply downhill to the village. Turn right and you’ll soon find your car.

How to change your inner identity

Hilary Charman is a hypnotherapist based at Partners in Wellbeing, Poundbury.

To make a big change we have to change our inner identity and this is most people’s stumbling block. Our inner identity is made up of all the stuff, all the memories and consequent beliefs that we have accumulated during our lives. If our inner identity is that of a smoker it’s very hard to quit smoking. If our inner identity is of someone who is overweight we often find we can lose the weight but it’s like running up a down escalator, it’s so much effort to sustain and very soon we’re back where we started. Using analytical and solution-based hypnotherapy combined with other techniques can help free you from those old beliefs and support you in creating your new desired identity. There are also lots of things you can do for yourself. Two of the most powerful are visualisations and affirmations. When writing affirmations it’s vital that you believe them. It’s no good saying ‘I am healthy and slim’ if you know you’re overweight and out of breath. However if you change that to something like ‘As I get slimmer and healthier I can feel lighter in my body and mind. As I feel lighter in my body and mind, I can become slimmer and healthier.’ This is known as a compound suggestion and not only is it an affirmation it is also a hypnotic suggestion that feeds into itself so a fantastic way of helping yourself. So making your own personal compound suggestion and saying it three times out loud, a couple of times a day and visualising how you want to be, whether it’s slimmer, richer, calmer, whatever. Feel, picture, imagine what it’s like, making the picture big and bright in your mind. And the other thing you can do is just pick one thing you can do today to take yourself a step nearer to your goal. And make a promise to yourself to do it every day. It may be just to drink a glass of water before a meal or go for a 20 minute walk every day but commit fully to it. And soon it will become a habit, a positive habit. So do these three things and gradually you can make real changes in your beliefs and start to move forward and become the person you want to be. Hilary Charman PHHD AMACCPH

An award-winning familyrun Dorchester hair and beauty salon with a difference is celebrating a decade in business. Profile Hair and Beauty was launched by Tracy Baker in Damers Road in April 2012. They moved to Mellstock Avenue in 2017 to have more space to provide a range of beauty treatments, including nails, brows and lashes. Unusually, they are a gender neutral salon – meaning they price depending on hair length rather than gender. Tracy’s daughter Steph Voice, who has taken over the business from her mum, said: “This is something we introduced after lockdown. “We wanted to ensure pricing wasn’t dictated by gender, for example if a man has long hair it has always been unfair that they would pay less when in reality it takes the same time as a lady’s long hair cut and finish. “In the same way, if a lady had a short back and sides hair cut why should they pay more for the service just because of them being a woman? “It also helps people who are gender neutral feel more comfortable going to a salon. “I think we are also one of the few places in Dorchester who offer this pricing and we have found it works so 20% OFF HAIR CUT AND FINISH well.” Since moving to Mellstock Avenue, where there’s free street parking, Profile been able to expand its offering to include a host of different treatments. Steph has found space for several selfemployed beauticians, one of whom even has their own brand. There are several senior hair stylists, one junior, a colourist and a lash technician. They all work a few days a week, which keeps the salon feeling calm. Steph has installed a special Mini car for youngsters, where they can watch Netflix or Disney Plus to keep them distracted and the whole impression is of a lovely place to be for everyone. A new offering is keratin hair smoothing, which can keep your tresses straightened and soft for weeks without chemicals. The salon has relaunched its popular points scheme, which entitles people to £5 off when they reach 250 points. And they are running a raffle for their customers for their anniversary, with £80-worth of products up for grabs.
