Sheriff of Kinburn

Cap gun collector a throwback to the Wild West BY HARRY GALLON West Carleton Review

There is a new sheriff in town and his name is Mike Lebrun. In reality, Lebrun is the postmaster of the Kinburn post office, but in spirit, he is a character straight out of the Wild West. “The Wild West was a much simpler time,” said Lebrun, who was born and raised in Arnprior, and has been a resident of Kinburn since 1979. “It wasn’t hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. If I lived in that time, I would have liked to have been the sheriff: I like people to be accountable. I certainly wouldn’t have been the gunslinger.” Gunslinger, no, but a man in possession of more than 250 vintage cap guns, a humdinger, you could say, of a unique and well-loved collection. “I didn’t appreciate the craftsmanship of cap guns as a kid,” he said.

“They are not like toys now: they were made to last. The quality of materials and the workmanship that went into them is amazing. They were made with pride, and it shows.” Lebrun, 57, grew up watching the western television shows of the day – The Roy Rogers Show, Rawhide, Hopalong Cassidy - and took more from them than just entertainment. “The dialogue and storylines always had a good moral,” he said. “They were romanticized versions of the old cowboy code, but I learned that if you went outside that code, there would be consequences.” Lebrun recalls buying a Leslie-Henry cap gun from Mr. Slaughter’s Barbershop and Hobby Store in Arnprior as a boy. “They provided a lot of entertainment for a relatively small price,” he said. ARTS OF PLAY Intermediate students at Huntley Centennial Public School in Carp hosted an Arts of Play coffeehouse last Wednesday evening in support of the Right to Play program. The evening featured entertainment from students, art displays, dance, drama and music. A drum circle with traditional African rhythms kicked off the night of entertainment. Family’s misfortunes mount Cottage destroyed by fire in MacLaren’s Landing

If tragedies occur in threes, then a family with strong West Carleton roots has filled its quota. The Spence family cottage, one of the oldest in MacLaren’s Landing, dating back to 1932, will have to be razed after fire consumed both floors Sunday afternoon. The summer residence at 169 Cottage Lane was owned by Vern Spence. His daughter-in-law Trish and three young children were staying there. No one was hurt in the fire. Even the family dog was rescued; next door neighbour Glenn Byrne – who orga-

nizes the annual car show for prostate cancer research on the Carp fairgrounds – rescued the big poodle-like dog. However, last year Trish lost her father. Soon after that it was her husband, David, who died in a snowmobile accident near their Kars home (close to Manotick). Sandy Byrne, Glenn’s wife, said the fire may have started from a toy with batteries. But Ottawa Fire Services are investigating rechargeable batteries left in the front room as the possible cause. Either way, Byrne said it could have been much worse. “Glen and our son Jason were hosing down the side

of our shed before the fire department came. The smoke was just incredible,” she said. “Thank God there was no wind at the time of the fire. If it had been as bad as it was earlier in the weekend, there’s no telling how many cottages would have gone.” Fire services spokesman Marc Messier said 50 firefighters and 17 emergency vehicles were on hand for 30 minutes before the blaze was brought under control at 2:30 p.m. “When firefighters arrived, heavy black smoke was coming from around the chimney, roof and windows,” Messier said.
