abors is, quite simply, one of the biggest names in the world of drilling today.

Nabors is regarded as the world’s largest provider of land-drilling contract services for exploration and development of oil, gas and geothermal wells. The numbers speak for themselves. Worldwide, the Nabors companies own and operate almost 600 land drilling and 970 land workover and well-servicing rigs. Ironically, during the oil and gas sector’s darkest days in the 1980s–back when the company had been sold to a major U.S. conglomerate named Anglo Energy–the Nabors legacy was almost brought to an abrupt halt. After Anglo Energy went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a man named Eugene M. Isenberg was responsible for performing one of the quickest Chapter 11 turnarounds in U.S. history. How did he pull it off? Isenberg simply sold off the other companies under the Anglo banner and kept the name of its performing entity. That name was Nabors. Isenberg is currently the Chairman and C.E.O. of Nabors Industries Ltd., headquartered in Barbados. Nabors Canada LP, meanwhile, represents a strong part of the global success of Nabors. It too experienced the darkness of the ‘80s.A decade later, it came raging back to the forefront of the Canadian oil and gas sector, gaining financial strength and stability through a series of welltargeted acquisitions. In 1996, Nabors Canada LP acquired the Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd. land drilling rigs and facilities. Two years later, it acquired Cantex Drilling. The late 2001 acquisition of Command Drilling was followed by the 2002 acquisition of Enserco in April. Through acquiring such impressive names–names noted for their expertise and cutting edge technologies–Nabors Canada LP has not only increased its presence in the Canadian market, but it has also helped pack the already enormous portfolio and financial clout of Nabors Industries Ltd.

Perhaps Bill Lingard, C.O.O. of Nabors Canada LP puts it best:“We went from having 36 rigs to having 81 drilling rigs and 200 service rigs.” Indeed, some have said that what Nabors Canada LP offers is “the best iron and the best people in the business.”

The structure of Nabors Canada LP as it stands today is complex but efficient. Duane Mather, President and C.E.O. of Nabors Canada LP, reports directly to the head office of Nabors Industries Ltd., and in particular to Eugene Isenberg. Reporting to Mather are: Derek Lowe, Vice President, Nabors Manufacturing and Academy Electric, and Bill Lingard, C.O.O. of Nabors Canada LP (and President of Nabors Drilling). In turn, Lou Doiron, President of Nabors Production Services, reports to Lingard. Other key players for Nabors Drilling include Warren Randall,VP Operations, and Rob Wagemakers, VP Marketing. For Nabors Productions Services, managers include Darrel McIntyre, General Manager, and Scott Darling, VP Marketing. Strong management with a sense of vision is one of the things that make a great company. On the other hand, Nabors is fully aware that the success of the company comes thanks in no small part to the hard work of all its employees. “The reputation Nabors has is great, and it’s your people that make your reputation,” Lingard says. “If all the people are dipping their oars in the right direction, you’ll get to where you’re going much faster.”

“Nabors strives to be the ‘Company of Choice’ for our employees and customers. We provide innovative and diverse services through our dedicated and proud workforce. We are committed to safety, integrity, and providing shareholder value.” – Nabors Canada LP Mission Statement 3

Adaptability: Nabors has earned the trust of its investors and the credit markets by conservatively managing the company’s resources, investing in highquality assets when the timing is appropriate, and maintaining a strong balance sheet and good access to low-cost capital. Nabors Canada LP: Making History for Over 50 Years Historical Highlights provided by Dave Elliott

The 1950s: A Time of Great Discovery and a Million-Dollar Deal f it’s true that Alberta had a previous reputation as an “oil town,” then it’s also a fact that February 13th, 1947 was the day when the province truly became a boomtown. When Leduc Number One blew on that historic date, big players in the oil and gas world took special notice of “Wild Rose Country.” Five years after Leduc Number One, a man named G.C. Parker, traditionally a boom operator, began to recognize the onset of increasingly competitive work. He agreed to sell his Canada-based drilling operation to an American named Clair Nabors and his associates for $1,000,000 (Canadian). Thus a new company named Parker Drilling Co. of Canada Limited was formed on May 7th, 1952. It went public instantly with 310,003 shares valued at $6.85 each.Assets at this time included 10 drilling rigs, 16 vehicles, a

facility in Jasper Place, and an office in Calgary. While the original organization was a U.S. firm registered in Oklahoma, this new company was a Canadian firm registered in Alberta. In 1953, Clair Nabors was elected to be President of the CAODC (Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors). Interestingly, Nabors had been one of the people who originally helped found this organization back in 1950. It remains strong to this day. The only well the company drilled for itself in the 1950s was located at Bruderheim, Alberta. There, it took on a shakedown well with Rig X in 1956. Later, it was moved to the remote arctic. The rig supervisor on this job was a man named Charles H.Wark, who went on to become Vice President of Nabors Well Service in Alaska. For the record, the well itself was not successful. Rig X, however, was moved by truck over the Klondike River and finally by tractor-drawn sleighs into the most northerly region for this company or any other Canadian drilling contractor at the time (1957). Again, Rig X produced some oil, but it was not of commercial value. However, the company gained valuable cold weather experience in the process. On July 25th, 1959, the company’s head office in Calgary was moved from its location in the Royal Bank Building to its new home in the largest office building in the city: the new Bentall Building at 440, 444 - 7th Avenue S.W. It remained there for 20 years.

The 1960s: Nabors Moves Up in the World n 1961, the company’s Edmonton area operations were moved from Jasper Place to Nisku. The old site was sold for $30,000 (although by 1980 it was assessed in the millions). As a further example of how times have changed, it was reported on August 28th, 1962, that wage rates ranged from $3.00 per hour for a driller down to $2.20 per hour for a floorman. Incidentally, if you worked as a cook’s helper at the time you earned $1.00 per hour. In April of 1963, the company was awarded first place for “accident prevention among contractors” (in their size range). Between 1963 and 1979, Nabors earned this particular trophy six more times. Obviously, safety consciousness was top of mind from the very start. It was also in 1963 that Nabors Alaska Drilling Inc. was formed. In July of that year, its Rig 6 was trucked from Bistcho Lake, Alberta to Hay River, Northwest Territories and barged down the Mackenzie River to the Beaufort Sea and along the Arctic Coast to a destination that was later named Pingo Beach. Equipment used to haul it included four oilfield trucks, three bulldozers, two crewcabs and a grader. The success of this trip led to the eventual founding of a company called Kodiak Oilfield Haulers Inc. Nabors Alaska is still a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nabors Industries Ltd. Kodiak has become a 50/50 joint venture with an Alaska-native corporation now called Peak Oilfield Services. On September 1st, 1966, a total of 14 years after incorporating, the company’s name was changed to Nabors Drilling Limited. In 1969, Clair Nabors was asked by BP Alaska to supply a heavy rig to probe some of their land after the discovery of Prudhoe Bay. No heavy rig was available at the time, so Nabors arranged with Brinkerhoff Drilling to form a joint venture. For approximately $500,000, Nabors bought a 50 percent interest in that company’s Emsco A-800 rig at Kenai. It was named N-B 1, operated and eventually fully owned by Nabors.

The 1970s: High Times, Big Business and a Bright Future n March 5th, Clair Nabors and his wife Lillian were badly injured in an aircraft accident at Fort St. John, British Columbia. Nabors was forced by his condition after the accident to delegate more responsibilities to his manager—a hard task for a man who had always been a very hands-on manager. In many ways, however, Nabors was finally ready to let go of the reigns of control a little. He was, after all, entering his sixties. In January of 1974, Anglo Company Limited completed arrangements to buy majority interest in Nabors Drilling Limited. On July 28th, 1975, the company scored yet another “first” in the realm of cold weather drilling when Rig 18-E was christened at the Edmonton Operations Centre (EOC) for use in Alaska. It was a highly portable deep-hole drilling rig designed and built by Nabors for use in particularly harsh climates. The name of the manager on this project was Donald A. Park, who one year later would succeed Clair Nabors as President. Eventually, Park was moved up to be an executive with Anglo. On January 25th of 1978, the company’s Calgary office was moved from the Bentall Building to the 11th floor of the newly constructed Home Oil Tower in the Toronto-Dominion Square, located at 1107, 324 - 8th Avenue S.W. Interestingly, towards the end of the 1970s, there had been a shift in the types of contracts Nabors took on. When it was founded, the company’s business was based on approximately 95 percent metreage work. By the late ‘70s, most of its contracts were almost entirely day work. Although Clair Nabors was no longer President of the company by the end of the 1970s, he continued to provide strong guidance as a director of Nabors Drilling Limited and Anglo Company Limited.

The 1980s: The Dark Years t was in the autumn of 1980 that the Federal Government of Canada introduced its National Energy Program. The shock waves of this program were felt throughout the drilling and service industry, at many different levels. Within six months of the program’s introduction, approximately 20 percent of the drilling rigs in Canada were moved out of the country and south into the United States. At that time, the wages for drillers had reached $14.00 per hour and $9.20 for floormen. (And if you were a cook’s assistant, you were now earning $7.35 per hour.) Benefits included group insurance, a pension plan, extended vacations, traveling allowance, free camp accommoda-

By March of 1981, the National Energy Program’s dire effects continued to impact the industry in general and Nabors specifically. Its Rig 11 crossed the Canada/U.S. border after being sold to Nabors’ sister company, R.L. Manning Company. On December 14th, 1985, the Calgary office moved again, this time to the Canada Trust Building at 1100, 505 – 3rd Street S.W. There, lower rental costs and lesser space were more suited to what seemed to be a continued downturn in the oil and gas business. Things would get worse before they got better. On March 8th of 1986, the final well was spudded during what had in fact been the best winter drilling season in five years. The same spirits that had been riding high during that winter season were now plummeting. By June of 1986, increasingly concerned with the lack of work in the Alberta oil patch, Nabors Drilling Limited formed a joint venture operation with Blocker Drilling Ltd., the Canadian division of Blocker Energy Corporation, based in Houston, Texas. An agreement was reached. Nabors would run 10 of Blocker’s rigs for a daily operating fee while Blocker retained ownership of the equipment itself.

The 1990s: Growth and Regained Stability o truly mark the end of an era and the end of a life filled with stellar accomplishments and great influence, Clair Nabors passed away in August 1993. By February of 1992, the downturn in the oil and gas sector continued to have dire effects, including the closing of the Calgary offices. In the autumn of the following year, however, Duane Mather returned to Canada from south of the border. He assumed the role of President of Nabors.Warren Randall, whose roots ran deep in the patch and in Nabors in particular, was named the Vice President. The objective of Nabors at this point, according to direction from Eugene Isenberg, was to look for opportunities to grow the company. In May of 1994, Mather and Doreen Dart, Executive Assistant, would go to Aberdeen to bid on the Hibernia project. A few months later, the company reopened its Calgary offices. At this point, the staff within the office included: Duane Mather, Doreen Dart, and Ron Birnie-Browne, Contracts Representative. Things were starting to move in a brighter direction. In fact, Mather’s mind was focused on growth. On December 20th, 1996, Nabors acquired the assets of Noble Drilling (Canada) Ltd. In May 1997, it acquired the assets of Cantex Drilling.

T

It was in 1998, too, that Nabors received two top awards with the CAODC (Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors) safety programs, for impressive safety records in the working year of 1997. They also received the top safety awards within their category in the following years, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Things were starting to move in a brighter direction.

The 2000s: Great Expectations, Profitability Duane Mather: President and C.E.O. of Nabors Canada LP, has grown the company considerably f one were to ask where Nabors Canada LP stands after celebrating its first 50 years in business, the answer would be simple: Nabors is standing strong. Acquiring Noble and Cantex was just the beginning. The early years of the “third millennium” would see the acquisitions of Command Drilling, and Enserco. Through its aggressive growth from the mid-90s onwards, Nabors Canada LP targeted companies perfectly fitted to its corporate philosophies and goals, thereby reducing its costs and increasing its efficiencies to create a company that is now noted for sustainability and profitability. The man who has played a key role in this growth of Nabors Canada LP is its President and C.E.O. Duane Mather. Interestingly, Mather’s beginnings are notably humble.“I started as a heavy duty mechanic,” he begins, discussing his roots.“I’ve been with Nabors for over 22 years now.” Back in the early 1980s, Mather was with the Canadian organization during the time period when Isenberg turned the entire company around, working from the head office in New York to save it from bankruptcy.“Around that time, I left the Canadian operation, went south, and worked for the company in the international community,” Mather recalls.“I spent one year commuting out of Canada and running the international company out of the Houston office. By the early 1990s, we had no presence in Calgary at all, just operations and an administration office in Nisku, under the direction of Warren Randall.” Business was flat in those days. It was in the summer of 1993 that Isenberg agreed to grow the company here in Canada.“At the time, we had about 16 or 17 drilling rigs here and that was it,” Mather says. Thus began the process of acquiring smaller but impressive companies in the drilling sector. The logic of it was solid.“If you’ve got enough money, and our company does, you can build any amount of iron you want,” says Mather. “The thing that made these acquisitions work was that the people involved were good. The people who joined the company through the acquisitions were people who had the exact kind of pride in their work that we did, people who believe their equipment

I

and people are the best. That’s still our attitude.” Enserco is a great example of a company that was fitted perfectly to the Nabors philosophy. “On the drilling side of Enserco, the equipment they had was all built in the last 10 years,” Mather explains. “We were building new equipment at that point, too, and we were working with new A/C technology, but then we looked at Enserco and realized that we could build X number of rigs for X number of dollars or we could buy Enserco for X number of dollars. What we ended up with is a company that allows us to be more to our clients and service them better.” Through acquiring Enserco, Nabors Canada LP gained a fleet of 30 drilling rigs that were noted for their shallow to medium-depth capacity.“At that point, the Nabors fleet was somewhat weak in the mid-depth range,” Mather says. “This gave us a pretty big selection of rigs to offer to our customers in a wider range. It also added 200+ service rigs and a new business line to Nabors in Canada.”

Command Drilling was another powerful acquisition. “We looked at the strength of their company, the new equipment, deeper capacity and the strength of their people and that made them a natural fit for us,” Mather states. “Command was also very involved in pioneering A/C technology. They worked with Academy Electric in that particular area of technology. We bought Academy Electric because we wanted to be in control of our own destiny and create and expand our A/C technology in house.” Nabors Canada LP has been a pioneer with A/C technology. “At one time, it was considered cost prohibitive to build pure A/C,”Mather notes.“We tried it on a smaller rig to see if it could meet budget and operating expectations and it did. After we acquired Command Drilling, we tried A/C with a big rig and stepped up the technology.” Currently, Nabors Canada LP has two new rigs under construction that have an A/C drive system and their own draw-works design. In the future, what Mather sees for Nabors Canada LP is “more change, more growth. We want to be the provider of services of choice to our customers and expand our customer base,” he says.“We will continue to look at every opportunity to do that. How we get there depends on

what opportunities come along. We’re not through growing the company.” Mather is currently the Chairman of the CAODC (Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors). What he brings to the CAODC and the industry are the insights a man gets when he’s started in the business at a young age and has worked virtually everywhere in the world. “Opportunities are all about being in the right place at the right time… and I’ve been lucky that way,” says Mather.“I’ve been in every continent in the world. I’ve been exposed to many cultures and it’s been a great education. I worked in Iran in the mid-70s, in Yemen, in Indonesia, Thailand, and Russia back when the wall was up.What I’ve learned is that the day-to-day people anywhere are different than the spin that media and politicians put on things.” What life lesson could Mather pass on to a young oil worker? “Tolerance,” he says. “I’m a pretty strong personality, but what I’ve learned through working with many individuals from many countries is a tolerance for other cultures and ways of life. Canadians are too quick to say ours is the only way. I have been lucky enough to work with many individuals from around the world and we have different opinions but we’re still good friends. On a practical, day-to-day work basis, you can learn a lot from that. Instead of butting heads with someone, you can often put your heads together and come up with a solution that’s better than the one either of you might have thought up alone.”

• ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘˘ responsibi´lity

Responsibility: Nabors Canada LP is committed to protect people and the environment. Safety is the way we do business and live our lives. Safety and the Environment Nabors’ Ceaseless Focus on Safety abors Canada LP is a company committed to the health, safety and well being of its employees, customers, and the public. It’s an integral part of its corporate philosophy. And Nabors is a company willing to be completely upfront about its safety results. After all, when it comes to safety, Nabors’ goal is one of continuous improvement, which requires the input of all stakeholders. The company is working with CAODC and PSAC (Petroleum Services Association of Canada) on a variety of safety initiatives. As of 2004, it will be mandatory to have a Certificate of Recognition and a basic safety program audit (for all drilling and service rig contractors that are members of these organizations). “You need a safety manual, clear safety procedures and proof that you’re following those procedures,” says Bill Lingard. In the Nabors world, it is now mandatory to wear fire retardant coveralls. Potential hazards include flash fires from diesel or gas, and there are hydrocarbons at certain points of drilling as well.“If there was a flash fire due to these potential hazards and someone was burned, their chances of survival without fire retardant coveralls would be very slim,” says Lingard. The management of Nabors remains committed to attain a worldclass safety record. There are regular rig visits. “During the January 2003 industry Safety Stand-down Week, I myself visited 26 crews on rigs.We talked about our safety initiatives,” says Lingard. “Through this kind of input, we learn more about what gives our employees the incentive to work safe.” There is also a Senior Management Central Steering Committee on Safety that has monthly meetings and action items, and a Safety Captain on each rig. “In April, 2003, we had a lot of positive feedback about our on-site

N

Safety Captain program,” Lingard says. “People are noticing some of the things that are wrong on site and making improvements at the well-site.” The single biggest killer in this industry, however, is the highway— and Nabors is doing something about it. “Driving is something that people don’t pay enough attention to,” begins Duane Mather. “In particular, not enough people in the field wear seat belts. A couple years ago, after much study, we decided to take a police officer out to our locations. That definitely got the attention of our people in the field!” No, no arrests were made to prove a point. Instead, the police officer’s presentation took the general approach that Nabors’ management likes to take: the human one. “The main message was,‘Look, if you don’t do this for you, do it for your wife and kids.’ It did the trick,” Mather

says.“In fact, many of the guys asked if we could maybe provide a defensive driving course for their wives too. We do personal things like that… or like rewarding employees with good safety records. “One of the guys had a boy about nine years old,” continues Mather. “His boy approached me and said,‘You know, my dad had the best safety record in the company.’ Kids like to brag about their dads.” “This is a high risk industry with a lot of big equipment, a lot of iron, and people need to be more careful on site. It’s all about changing behaviour,” adds Lingard. This is precisely why the Nabors Job Observation program was created.“It’s a program aimed at changing behaviours,” Lingard says.“It gives our employees the skills to watch the work procedures of their peers very closely and identify what it is they’re doing right as well as wrong. It also teaches our employees how to properly approach someone in the right manner in order to correct the problem, to reinforce the good procedures and provide input on corrections they could make on the not-so-safe or incorrect procedures.”

“We believe in making it personal,” Lingard says with conviction. “Take notice of the guy who’s doing something wrong, the guy putting his hands in a place where he could risk losing his fingers, the guy who’s standing in the wrong place where he could get hit by something.Approach him and say, ‘you’re going to need your hands to play ball with your child. You’ll need your arm to put your arms around your wife or your girlfriend when you get home.’The guy may get upset at the time, but hopefully he’s going to think about what you said. And

he’s going to realize that safety needs to be a value in his life.” Of course, there’s another side to the issue: safety also makes good business sense. “A safe operation is an efficient and cost effective operation,” Mather says. Nabors has made a point of investigating where most injuries come from and investing in ways–through both safety programs and new technology–to reduce any potential dangers on site. “The biggest contributor to injuries in the field is pipe handling,” Mather notes. “We’ve automated some of that process in the new rigs. The next step in technology is to install in the field the kind of technologies that are being used offshore. On land, you’re traditionally taking the rig apart and putting it together, and sometimes under tight constraints, whereas offshore equipment stays together for the life of the vessel.” Canrig Drilling Technology Ltd., another company in the roster of Nabors Industries Ltd. companies, was a pioneer of land-rig top drives. “This technology won’t eliminate injuries, but when you look at stats and see that approximately 70 percent of injuries come from working tubulars, you look for ways to minimize potential dangers,” says Mather. Nabors Drilling’s commitment to safety has been paying off.“In 2002, our total recordable injury frequency was 5.97 per 200,000 man hours. When the CAODC published their safety stats of all drilling contractors in 2002, the average was a total recordable injury frequency of 9.15,” points out Lingard.“In 2003, Nabors Drilling has a target of 4.61 for its total recordable injury frequency per 200,000 man hours.”

Nabors provides the right rig with appropriate technology and capable crews to efficiently and economically drill its customers’ wells, particularly those with a high degree of complexity or environmental sensitivity.

The Environment and Being a Good “Nabor” hrough the acquisition of Abandonrite Services, Nabors Canada LP has been able to strengthen the services that ensure responsible management of our natural environment. Specifically, the company provides environment, abandonment and reclamation services, which include the complete, efficient and cost-effective well site and pipeline abandonment, lease reclamation and liability assessment services. As environmental protection becomes an increasingly large issue for industry and the general public, regulatory bodies are focusing on liabilities created by improperly abandoned or forgotten pipelines. A common liability might be when the wellhead is cut off and the pipeline is left behind, which delays reclamation work until abandonment of the pipeline is completed. Abandonrite has a reliable track record of dealing with typical situations like these (and atypical ones too). “Environmental stewardship is a team responsibility,” says Scott Darling. As a point of interest, Abandonrite was originally Darling’s company.

hat Nabors Production Services provides its customers with is no small or easily definable thing. In fact, it’s a great deal of things, including: flexibility, reliability, maneuverability, adaptability, quality products, and quality people. Like Nabors Drilling, Nabors Production Services was in essence the product of another acquisition. It began its dynamic life in the mid1990s. Through the amalgamation of small independent service rig companies (16 in total), Bonus Resource Services was born as a public company on the Toronto Stock Exchange and later changed its name to Enserco in the spring of 2001. “I’ve been in the industry for quite a few years,” says Lou Doiron, President of Nabors Production Services. “I started on the end of a welding stick in compression facility construction in Alberta.” Having begun his career in the oil and gas

industry when he was in his late teens after growing up in and then leaving the beautiful province of Prince Edward Island, Doiron spent his formative years working in the field in construction and gas well testing. He followed that with 18 years in the well testing business, with increasing levels of responsibility, then joined the Enserco Group in 2001 as Senior Vice President responsible for Bonus Well Servicing. During his rise through the ranks Doiron also found time to keep his priorities focused on furthering his education, with stints at SAIT in the Petroleum Technology program and the University of Calgary in the Business Management program. The financial strength of Nabors Production Services empowers its leaders with the flexibility to assist customers in every way they can to mutual benefit… whether the issue is operational or financial or based on safety, quality assurance, or any special needs. “Since the acquisition by Nabors, we have focused on equipment design, how it looks and how it works,” Doiron says. “Good, sound operational equipment is one of the keys to our success.” What that means is a very limited amount of breakdowns on site, where it matters most.“Nabors supports the sustainability of our fleet with capital and resources that are enviable to other service companies,”says Doiron. Nabors Productions Services is noted industry-wide for its expertise and experience, for its sound environmental practices, its emphasis on safety, and its rigorous employee testing and training. While its main focus is providing quality service rigs operated by rig managers and drillers considered to be the best in the industry, the company also provides a great deal of complementary services to the oil and gas sector, including: production, completion, workover, abandonment and reclamation projects.

The company boasts a significant service rig fleet. Services include: rigs for deep wells, heavy load environments, slant rigs providing adaptability to today’s methods of enhancing oil recovery, re-entry rigs that assist with the sustainability and profitability of producing fields, freestanding rigs with engineered stability in fast-paced operations with frequent moves, rod rigs that provide flexibility to change pace on the fly, and rigs suitable for work in harsh Arctic climates. It also provides customers with site-specific well-swabbing tools from the simplest to the most complicated. Swabtech has mastered timely and efficient rig-up and rig-out methods, cost-effective fluid containment, sour service capabilities, tubing and casing swabbing, dewaxing, plunger and fishing services, and tools for starting up oil wells and unloading shallow gas wells. Swabtech has also developed a state of the art cable spooling unit and combined it with wire cable measurement, certification and analysis services to prevent costly wire failure… because anyone who’s ever tried to fish a broken wire cable from a well knows the process is time consuming. Nabors Productions Services also offers proven well testing and flowback services, including mobile flowback vessels and tanks provided to assist with completion, production, workover and abandonment operations. “On the production side, we have some of the best iron in the patch,” notes Scott Darling. “Darrel McIntyre (General Manager of Nabors Productions Services) is doing a great job in Red Deer building great rigs. It’s a pleasure to market this equipment.”

Reliability: Nabors’ existing presence in most of the strategic oil and gas producing areas worldwide, coupled with a full range of available equipment, gives the company competitive advantages, whether making acquisitions or deploying rigs. Nabors Drilling: The Power of Depth hrough its many acquisitions, Nabors Canada LP dramatically reduced the age of its previous fleet. It has also added to its powerful portfolio of rigs in the deep market (rigs 3,800 metres and deeper) and a cluster of rigs in the shallower markets. And because it focused on acquiring companies with new rigs, Nabors Canada LP now has one of the broadest, most modern drilling fleets out there. Nabors Drilling has some of the newest rigs built in the last five years. Through Nabors Manufacturing, the company is able to build rigs using topdrive and A/C technology. This provides a significant benefit. Because they’re not burning as much diesel to generate power, these rigs are better for the environment. And because the new systems have smoother operating drawworks–gear-driven instead of using chains–there’s minimum downtime. The technology utilized by Nabors Drilling is innovative and reliable. That power is matched by the sheer size of Nabors’ fleet. It’s large: 81 drilling rigs in total. It’s also deep. Some of the rigs provide a range of up to 7,000 metres in depth. In fact, when it comes to rigs from the 4,600-metre range and deeper, Nabors has approximately 33 percent of the Canadian deep drilling market. It is fitting, then, that Bill Lingard, President of Nabors Drilling, also has considerable depth in the oil and gas industry. “I graduated in 1982 with a Mechanical Engineering degree and started as a field engineer at that time, working for Halliburton,” Lingard says.“I spent a lot of time in the field and on offshore rigs, specifically in the designing and installing of various pieces of equipment for rigs.” Between the years of 1984 and 1986, Lingard’s career with Halliburton focused on technical and sales positions. In 1986, he went to Halifax as the local manager. “During that time, I ran part of the east coast operations,” he explains.“Then in 1990 I went to the Houston office. I worked in the technical and sales management side of their business, on the international side.” During that time, he also somehow found the time to attend management courses at the University of Texas. In 1994 Lingard returned to Canada, this time to head up the entire Canadian operation for Halliburton. He led the company through a lot of growth... And for Lingard, an interesting brush with fame of sorts. "I met Dick Cheney several times," he notes. We had dinners with customers and I flew with him on the corporate jet. I enjoyed our conversations very much. He is a family oriented regular guy." (Interestingly, according to Lingard, Cheney's hobbies include reading obscure history books from all parts of the world, and fly-fishing.) In 1999, Halliburton asked him to run some of their international companies. His desire, however, was to stay here in Canada and specifically in Calgary. In fact, Lingard just purchased a two-acre lot just outside of Calgary. In other words, he’s staying put.

In hindsight, staying in Alberta has been a wise decision for Lingard. Here, as a key player in the various companies that were eventually merged together to become Enserco, he was able to build up that company to the point where, as Lingard puts it, “Nabors said ‘this is a good company, let’s acquire it.’”The rest, for Lingard, is history. What he expects in the future is more of the same: “fun, excitement, and tons of challenges.” A busy man, Lingard does more than wear two hats in Nabors, serving as the C.O.O. of Nabors Canada LP and the President of Nabors Drilling. Currently, he is the Past Chairman of PSAC (the Petroleum Services Association of Canada), Past Chairman of the STARS Starlight Starbright Gala, and he also sits on a number of other industry boards. Rob Wagemakers,VP Marketing for Nabors Drilling, is also no stranger to a busy life. It’s his job to look at the industry as a whole and target companies that are going to be prevalent in the future. There is a science to it. “I track land base holdings and land sales so I can figure out which companies will be most

active,” Wagemakers explains. “Then I bring that information to our management meetings and we target these companies as people we’d like to work with. Other targets are the smaller, more safety-conscious companies, ones that match our safety programs.”

Warren Randall, Vice President of Nabors Drilling: Looking Back, Looking Ahead.

Warren Randall, c1975

Warren Randall, today

t was in 1966, just weeks before his wedding day, that Warren Randall started in the oil business as a roughneck. He’s been married ever since. He stuck with his career in the patch too, for over three decades now. During that time, Randall’s work life has been marked by great change and growth. “What I’ve learned–and what I tell my kids–is that there is no substitute for dedication and hard work,” he states.“You can have all the accreditation you want, but without sincere dedication, long hours, and an ability to get along with the people you work with, you likely won’t get very far in this life.”

On October 8th, 1968, Randall was hired to work as a Derrickman on Nabors Rig 7. A year later, the Rig Manager at that time, Jack Smale, said that Randall was a “good” employee… good enough, obviously, to make Gerry Waters in the personnel department take notice. Over the next two years, Randall worked any position and on any rig available. On Sept. 20th, 1970, he was promoted to Driller back on Rig 7. The next three years were marked by hard work. He also took courses on everything from Well Control to String Design. On December 7th, 1973, he was promoted to Toolpush. On January 1st, 1981, thirteen years of hard work paid off.Warren Randall was given the position of Field Superintendent. “I didn’t feel I was ready for it,” he says now.“Every step of the way, every time my career reached a new stage, it wasn’t because it was my decision. It was the company that made the decision for me to take on more responsibilities.” It’s obvious that management must have seen a lot of potential in him. Randall has been the Vice President of Nabors Drilling for over a decade now. Still, he is humble. “I’m no greater or any more important to this company than any other employee,” says Randall.“We’re all part of the team.” Over the years, Randall has been a major player on the team.“Back in the late 1980s when this company and the whole industry was going through rocky times, all the operations were moved here to Nisku,” he recalls. “There were just two senior people here. I was one of them.” During that time, Randall’s duties multiplied and included reporting to the company’s head office in Houston. “When the oil sector experienced an ‘up’ cycle again, I tried to keep doing everything I’d been doing, and I was run ragged,” Randall says with a sigh.

Oilweek (20 - OBC) ADS

6/19/03

10:36 AM

What Randall learned through the process was that it was a big job to be “in-the-know” when Nabors Drilling had 18 rigs, but now that the company’s portfolio boasts a multitude of shallower rigs of 3,800 metres or less and others that handle deeper drilling–81 altogether–it is impossible to be the “micromanaging” type. “The biggest single issue with growth is accepting that you can’t control everything,” Randall advises. “It is very important to put the people around you into positions of responsibility and give them support. It’s their job to report to me, that’s true, but it’s my job to keep my mind on the big picture and let them be the best managers they can.” The Nabors Drilling team is second to none, according to Randall. “Everyone brings with them a huge level of dedication and knowledge,” he says.“We’ve got a lot of long term people who’ve been with the company for 20 to 30 years now. Some of them came with the acquisitions and brought with them expertise in areas we didn’t previously focus on. Now, we’re a much broader company.” In the autumn of 2003, Nabors Drilling will become stronger than ever. By then, what are now two different offices–one in Nisku, one in Leduc–will be brought together in an expansion of the Nisku facility.“What we’re doing is selling the property in Leduc and moving the accounting department that we previously had there into the Nisku location,” Randall explains. “That will both cut our costs, streamline our operations, and increase our efficiency.” Change, it seems–and change for the better–is a characteristic that has marked Nabors from the very beginning.

Maneuverability: maneu´verabi´lity Nabors has the power to invest in building nothing but the best iron in the patch, to conservatively manage its resources while manufacturing the most cutting-edge, safest and most maneuverable equipment in the industry. Nabors Manufacturing: The Best Iron in the Patch he larger you get, the more financially powerful you get, you can invest more in research and development, which is something Nabors Canada LP has been able to do… and that’s something that’s not common in this industry. What Nabors Manufacturing strives to build is nothing but the best. Everything is done in-house for quality control. There is no shortage of projects. “We’re in charge of all the new builds and retro-fits of all the Nabors equipment, but we also do projects for other Nabors Industries companies,” begins Derek Lowe, VP Manufacturing. “We’re also in charge of our own electrical division,Academy Electric.” In two shops that total 28,000 square feet on 10 acres of land, the employees of Nabors Manufacturing–with up to a dozen permanent staff plus 25 or so contractors at any given time and 30 employees on the Academy Electric side–are constantly working hard to push the boundaries of new, user-friendly technology, such as cameras, wireless, remote controls, programmable logic control computers, and auto drill systems. Their specialty, however, is A/C technology.

“A/C technology is far superior for control,” Lowe says. “You can stall an A/C motor at zero speed and get full torque. It also gives you regenerative braking abilities, so you don’t need a manual brake, you can regenerate the braking back into the bus system. It allows you to dissipate the waste energy through a dynamic brake.” Lowe’s mind isn’t simply on tech talk. It’s on the big picture, on technology that can be used in the field for stellar results.“We’re building a few rigs right now that are new industry standards,” he says,“One is a specialized rig that moves as one unit. It weighs 2.2 million pounds and it has the ability to move from one well to the next on a pad. You’ll be able to move the rig from one hole to the next within 45 minutes with no dismantling.” In an effort to increase worker safety in the field and more than push the envelope of current rig technology, Nabors Manufacturing has spent eight months making a rig that

An anticollision system has also been integrated into the rig to prevent crown and drill floor contact. Other features include a remote control system that provides functions to all winches, manriders, tuggers, and boom lines, and a fluid control system to catch fluids. As well, the driller’s controls are all conveniently in the driller’s cabin, which allows the driller to remotely control the draw-works.” The PLC system of Rig 60 has diagnostics to assist in troubleshooting. The PLC processor is also IP addressable. It allows for a satellite uplink so that technologists can troubleshoot problems from the office, thus eliminating the need for expensive onsite service calls.

Lowe believes approximately 40,000 manhours were logged in the making of Rig 60. “It probably went faster because we learned so much working on Rig 69,” he explains. “Rig 69 was our maiden voyage on the A/C line-up. Right now, it’s the biggest land rig in Canada as far as horsepower goes, with a total of 5,500 horsepower. It’s being used on some 5,800 metre jobs in the field, which is easy for that rig, because it’s capable of 7,000 metres plus. It took us about a full year to manufacture it.” Lowe attributes the ability to take on projects like this to the recent acquisitions and consequent growth spurt of Nabors. “At Command Drilling, we had the vision, but we didn’t have the cash or the backup,” he notes. Nabors’ acquisitions have also brought with them a wealth of talent. Indeed, the level of manufacturing expertise at Nabors Manufacturing is staggering. “We’re 30

Capability: Through the acquisitions of companies noted for their innovative technologies and acclaimed expertise in specific disciplines, Nabors provides its customers with a broader depth of knowledge, impressive operational results and increased profitability.

Ryan Energy Technologies: Raising the Bar with Horizontal & Directional Drilling Technology and Rig Instrumentation Systems yan Energy Technologies is one of the most recent acquisitions of Nabors Industries Ltd. and a sister company to Nabors Canada LP in the Nabors Industries conglomerate. The company was attracted to Ryan Energy as a top quality provider of horizontal directional drilling and related services. Ryan’s people, products and processes help Nabors offer operational excellence in: horizontal and directional well construction and technical support, directional drilling engineering and comprehensive well planning, horizontal and directional drilling field supervision, measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD) systems, downhole positive displacement drilling motors, and more. “This is very specialized equipment,” points out Rick Ryan, President and C.E.O. of Ryan Energy Technologies. “We contract directly to oil and gas companies. If their geology departments want to hit a certain target at a certain depth, we draw up an engineering program to ensure that we hit that target.” Two decades ago, directional and horizontal drilling was still considered to be some kind of “black magic.” In fact, it was Ryan Energy Technologies that helped put it on the map here in Canada. So impressive were its technology and operational results that the company grew at an astronomical rate.“We were a private company in October of 1991.We became public in March of 1994, and by the late 90s were listed in PROFIT 100 as one of the fastest growing companies in Canada,” says Ryan.“We grew our business from scratch, peaked out at 95 million in revenue in 2001, and we were sold to Nabors in 2002.”

It was a natural fit for a drilling contractor. “I think what Nabors saw in us is that we’re very focused on building results-oriented technology, things we can bring to market, that produce results for clients and produce revenue for us as soon as possible. We leave the science projects to the big guys.”

The oil and natural gas industry itself is moving from on-site data collection to Internet-based data processing and interpretation.

Are the products Ryan Energy Technologies offers today particularly unique? “The directional drilling business is pretty similar across the board,” Ryan begins,“but where we are competitive is in how we collect and correlate data and how we use that data to drive our operational success and deliver seamless data to our clients.” Indeed, the oil and natural gas industry itself is moving from on-site data collection to Internet-based data processing and interpretation. As Ryan Energy Technologies’ customers continue to refine the precise positioning of their sub-surface geological targets, greater demands are being placed on the positioning of wellbores using real-time data collection, transmission, processing, and interpretation. Ryan Energy more than meets the new demands of industry through its innovative approach to operations, and technology that delivers real-time information on the location of the wellbore and the formations through which it passes. This information, in turn, allows Ryan’s field staff to direct the drilling assembly and provide timely geological and drilling information to its customers.

here is nothing quite like the power of a win-win scenario. Case in point would be Nabors Canada LP’s ongoing relationship with First Nations groups. Mr. Joseph Gibot is Nabors Canada LP’s full-time Aboriginal Affairs coordinator. Gibot, a Cree himself, is a member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. He not only finds and makes good win-win agreements, but he nurtures and grows the relationships by following up with every First Nations employee to ensure the cultures properly blend. Nabors Canada LP has approximately 25 percent Aboriginal crews on its Service Rig fleet in B.C. The company donated a $1.4 million dollar rig to Northern Lights College in Fort St. John with the intent of improving the training and safety of their operations, while creating opportunities for local people. Nabors will be very proactive in having the right relationship, finding the right First Nations people, then following through with the correct training, mentoring, and development to ensure the process works. It will customize schools for courses such as

t was back in 1952 that Clair Nabors and his associates started Parker Drilling Co. of Canada Ltd., back in the days that pre-dated even rock and roll that the company’s 10 drilling rigs were worked hard in the hopes of creating a prosperous future. Now, over half a century later, Parker Drilling Co. of Canada Ltd. is truly a name of the past. The Nabors name lives on, however, and the namesake of Clair Nabors has gone through the best and worst of times in the oil and gas sector. In an industry–indeed, a world–of ups and downs, Nabors Canada LP continues to play its part in putting the Nabors name on the map and into the history books of the oil and gas world. In just the past few years, the company has grown by leaps and bounds. And as Duane Mather says,“We’re not finished growing yet.”
