MARRIAGE: THE TRUTH AND THE MYTH Well before taking the step myself I’ve heard legends about how a marital life should be, to be honest most of the experiences were not so pleasing, and the most optimistic of them all was still depressing for a single lady, who enjoys her life and doesn’t give marriage the highest priority. Perhaps, the reason behind avoiding marriage was the fear of the unknown; like most girls giving up your life, your home, your family and your comfort zone for taking the risk of a successful or failing marriage was a big step to a road full of questions, uncertainties, doubts and fears. Having the guts and deciding to take a deep breath and delve into this unknown world putting aside all the warnings, scary and unpleasing stories I’ve heard about marriage from friends, relatives and even the media, I figured out that after all, there is no case like the other and the whole key to a happy or doomed marriage is your own choice. Choosing Mr. Right or your future hubby should be the first thing on your tying the knot list. Not the dress, not who you will bring to sing in your wedding or where would it be. Because when the crowd is gone and the honeymoon is over you are faced with the true being you chose. Not his fancy car, great looks or good physic, marriage requires a much deeper look into the person you chose to devote the rest of your life to. It’s not a Fendi bag to brag about with,

it’s your partner who will share with you your worse before your better. Marriage is full of challenges, and if you’re not standing on solid ground with your hubby, your marriage will fall apart before you even know it. Find a person who you can’t wait to go home and wrap yourself around his arms to tell him all of the minor details about your day without fearing of being judged or misunderstood, find a man who put you under his wing like a true guardian angel yet, doesn’t treat you with inferiority or marginalize your role in his life and treat you like a useless pretty doll, someone who believes in you and regardless of whether you are wearing makeup or not, he is still proud of you being his wife and knows that you will be a perfect mother for his kids. Find someone who wouldn’t be ashamed of taking off your heels after a long day and massaging your feet because he feels you had a tough time today. Only then, it would be totally worth changing your last name and be connected to a man who might not be of the same blood as you are, but the bond between you both might be more sacred and deeper than blood. Don’t forget to check our Relationships section (page 26) for more details on things you should search for in your Mr. Right.

How did your passion for fashion start? I was born with a talent to work with my hands in anything. However, I started to get into fashion from old Egyptian glamour. What distinguishes your designs from other designers’ wedding dresses? That is a very difficult question for me to answer; I don’t compare myself to other designers. I think that each designer has his own designs and spirit. What is the trend for 2014 wedding dresses? The trend is smaller and more classical dresses. What are your tips for a bride to be when it comes to picking the right dress for her? The most important tip for brides is to keep themselves as calm as possible to make the right decisions. Most brides get extremely stressed before their weddings, which makes them take erratic decisions in everything including the dress... Keep calm and trust your designer. You designed wedding dresses for a lot of celebrities, would you share with us some of the names? Donia Samir Ghanim, princess Khawla of Kuwait and more to come recently, but can’t disclose yet. What was the most challenging dress for you to design? My sister’s wedding dress. Tell us more about your cooperation with jewelry designer Sabry Marouf… It was such a nice experience, it was a pleasure working with experienced and qualified designers like Sabry Marouf, and the product of this collaboration says it all. Who are the people behind your couture’s success? Before attributing it to anybody, this success is a gift from God. I also gave an amazing team of hard working individuals, and our success lies in working together as a family rather than subordination.

LOUNGE 18

If a bride wants to reserve an appointment with you for her wedding dress, how long should it be before her big day? 5 to 6 months prior to the wedding. What is your advice to young girls who want to pursuit a career in the fashion industry? Toughen up and work hard; it is not a job for girls who like to play dress up. What are your favourite fabrics? I have a passion for fabrics. I literally love them all. What are the things that could ruin a glamorous wedding dress? A ridiculous hairdo and over the top makeup. You are half French half Egyptian, what was the influence of each country on your designs? I got from the French culture the desire for sophistication and utter chic, and the sensuality and desire to reflect the feminine warm nature from the Egyptian culture. When should a bride go for a full ballroom dress? And when should she choose a tight dress? The figure, personality, age and the theme of the wedding all together decide on the shape of the gown a bride should choose. Who are your favourite designers from the Arab world and worldwide? Elie Saab, Ramy Al Ali, Balenciaga and Givenchy. What are your wishes for your couture? My wishes are very simple; I just want to keep making brides happy. It is an epic moment for me to realize the dreams of the bride and her mother.

ny girl would want to look her best as she walks down the aisle to say I Do, and when it comes to Hollywood celebrities and royalties they never disappoint us. This wedding issue of Lounge, Amira Tharwat brought you few of the best wedding dresses worn by your favourite fashion icons on their special day. Find your inspiration…

KATE MIDDLETON: For months, we speculated about which designer Kate Middleton would wear when she was getting married to Prince William. On April 29, 2011, we found out: Kate became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in this Alexander McQueen masterpiece, simultaneously launching designer Sarah Burton into instant superstardom.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY: A muse for some of Hollywood’s finest period pieces, Keira Knightley would have surprised no one had she decided to wed then boyfriend James Righton in an ornate ball gown. Instead, the Oscar-nominated actress floated down the aisle in a simple, knee-length dress, which she accessorized with flats, a tweed jacket, and jet-black Ray-Ban sunglasses. Still, the low-key bride didn’t eschew tradition altogether. Rumor has it that she recycled a years-old Chanel dress in blush pink that she reportedly had already wore once to a party in 2009. Something borrowed, indeed.

MEGAN FOX: Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green escaped to a Hawaiian beach for their 2010 wedding. Fittingly, the bride wore a flowing silk chiffon Armani Privé gown and skipped shoes for her walk in the sand part.

LOUNGE 20

KATIE HOLMES: Let’s forget about TomKat’s split for a moment and think back to the couple’s wedding. Katie Holmes looked angelic at her 2006 nuptials to Tom Cruise in her off-the-shoulder custom Valentino gown.

KATE MOSS: Probably the last word we would use to describe Kate Moss would be traditional, but the dress she wore when she married m usician Jamie Hince was surprisingly understated. Designed by her good friend John Galliano, Kate’s sheer gown was the ideal combination of sexiness and vintage-inspired loveliness.

SALMA HAYEK: Salma Hayek and FrancoisHenri Pinault, CEO of luxury goods company PPR, wedded in a surprise ceremony at City Hall in Paris on Valentine’s Day 2009. Two months later, the couple married for the second time at Venice’s opera house. For the lavish affair, the bride took the plunge in an appropriately fashion-forward Balenciaga wedding gown by Nicolas Ghesquiere.

KIM KARDASHIAN: The reality

TV star and socialite wore two dresses in her previous wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries; a fishtail dress and a ballroom one both designed by Vera Wang. We hope her next wedding will last longer than 72 days, and we can’t wait to see the dress (or maybe dresses) she will wear for her most anticipated wedding to fiancé and daddy of North rapper Kanye West.

ANNE HATHAWAY: Anne Hathaway has married Adam Shulman after a one year engagement in Big Sur, California in 2012. The Dark Knight Rises star had hired Natalie Portman’s wedding planner to help her hash out her perfect nuptials. The bride wore a dress designed by Valentino, after the designer confirmed he would be in charge of creating her gown. Anne certainly made for a beautiful bride in her off-theshoulder, vintage inspired creation, which she teamed with white shoes and an elaborate but gorgeous veil.

hen searching for Mr. Right, every girl looks for certain qualities, which usually changes over time. However, there are certain qualities that never change like high education, stable job, good salary, similar social standard.. etc. Yet, there are less obvious qualities of his personality that indicate whether he is Mr. Right or not. Lounge brought to you a list of qualities that make him Mr. Right, read on to learn about them..

A GENTLEMAN

A great guy should be polite, respectful, considerate and attentive to a woman’s needs. This includes the classic gentleman behaviour such as, pulling a woman’s chair, walking on the car side of the street, taking

LOUNGE 26

of Mr. Right her coat etc. Besides the overwhelming feeling you will get, a gentleman would never cross the line of being inappropriate. Unfortunately, finding a gentleman nowadays became an advantage.

DIRECT

Many men believe that women fall for men who have the “whatever” attitude, which is false. Even worse, some men think that being indirect with women gives us the challenge to stick around being motivated by his misteary.. whatever! On the contrary, being direct is one of the factors that makes a relationship successful and fruitful. It even creates a stronger bond between couples.

you. This is the kind of guy you can rely on, knowing that he will always be there for you. Men with integrity are highly respected and in return, they give respect to others.

that even though he’s past his 30, still thinks he’s in high school. A mature man knows the time has come to grow up and be an adult.

HONEST

Mr. Right should be confident of himself and who he is, which is an important quality because self-confident men are less likely to change, they remain true to themselves. A man with self-confidence will not be deterred from what he believes to be true and will not be easily pressured into doing things that he does not believe in. Self-confidence makes a man happy and fun to be around because he will not be constantly questioning himself or others around him.

FAITHFUL

Faithfulness may be one of the most important characteristics when it comes to great men. Although you can never know for sure if this is the case or not, if you know he’s been a cheater, it’s best to stay away from him.

Honesty is a great quality every single person should have, but it’s often not that easy to find. An honest man will tell you the truth and not just what you want to hear, he wouldn’t need to use silly stories to get away from things or to impress you, but he will tell you what he will do and how he really feels. It’s true that brutal honesty can be offensive sometimes, but it’s better to have a guy that tells you the truth than one that fills you with lies.

INTEGRITY

MATURE

Having integrity is another very important characteristic that makes a great man. This means he will stay true to his word and true to himself. If he tells you that he is going to do something, he will do it. Both integrity and ambition are enough to convince you that this man will be capable of taking care of

Being mature means a man is able to take care of himself and approaches problems with a calm and collected manner. He understands the importance of being a man, being independent and values what he has. It’s true that men mature later in life, but of course you had at least one “childish” guy

SELF-CONFIDENT

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

A good man should have a positive attitude, which may be difficult to find nowadays. With a positive attitude, people will want to be around him and to have fun around him. Positive attitude leads to happiness and stability, it creates positive energy, which affects the other significant one in every way and thus, makes a relationship successful.

Q: How to survive a wedding with a

toddler?

!

A: YOU DON’T

H

ow you can survive a toddler at a wedding, well you can’t, seriously you can’t, especially if he is a boy toddler then, definitely you can’t. This wedding issue of Lounge Youmna Gad shares with us her adventure with her toddler in an attempt to attend a wedding…

I used to love attending weddings and celebrating with my friends, I would plan everything for that day although I am no fashion freak, but I love weddings, the spirit of any wedding is overwhelming to me, I love to focus on the bride and groom’s reactions & wonder, here is to the start, to the fresh new life & to the families bonded hopefully forever. Weddings were always my favourite emotional happy event; well actually, they used to be, not anymore. It all starts with the unfitting diaper bag I am forced to drag with me in each wedding; it is a must, it has all the baby’s essential in there from milk to clothes, towels, wipes and diapers, and of course its heavy and not matching with the dress I am wearing. Well, what do you think? It is a diaper bag. I can survive that and can survive the high heel shoes while carrying a child, the pain will go away next morning hopefully, but the unexpected baby or toddler behaviour is the part that I can’t survive. I was lucky to attend weddings witnessing my boy growing up, from a baby to a toddler, but let me tell you it wasn’t fun. I am not a

lucky mama who has someone to drop by my kid, and leave him for a stay over so, he is certainly invited also to every single wedding. I remember when he was a baby, I would spend ages in the ladies room feeding and changing his diapers and I usually miss the wedding. I remember attending a very dear friends wedding when he was almost 8 months when the spitting up thing was his favourite hobby. My baby back then suffered from a serious spitting up condition – and our worst fear was him spitting up while having our photo with the bride and groom, which luckily didn’t happen, yet the moment we stepped down the stage, the spit up was on my DRESS!!! That’s one thing to remember. Almost 11 months now and he is mastering his crawling skill, I had a wedding of a dear friend all by myself and all he wanted was to crawl on the hall floor and no matter how many times I carry him and walk around, he didn’t want to be held; crawling was his target. I remember that I almost cried at the wedding, the bride was my long time school friend, and I couldn’t enjoy her special night, it was tiring and so I took off very early before

even the night actually started. Now he is almost one and half and he is new to his walking skill and doesn’t like to sit, he prefers to explore the world on his own, especially the buffet part. My cousin’s wedding was the race for me. I was seen the whole night chasing him, and again, the wedding was not fun for me. So, do you survive a wedding with a toddler? No you don’t, weddings are not for babies or toddlers, we want to share that moment with the bride and groom seeking happiness, joy and romance in the air, but with a toddler or a baby it is not like you’d imagine it to be. Yet, to be fair, its not their fault, I take him to the wrong places while he wants to live his age, I want him to obey the rules of the event that he actually doesn’t get or understand. So, if you have a chance to drop your baby at you parent’s or in-laws house, do that for God’s sake, and if not, just embrace the fact that things has changed now, and try to make the best out of the night the way it is, after all we are blessed with healthy, naturally growing old kids and that’s enough reason to be thankful.

A PARENTAL TIPS Most newly born babies suffer from reflux so, place a thick book under the crib mattress, or lower the mattress setting at one end to give a slight recline to the crib, it will help with reducing the reflux thing a bit, worth trying new mamas.

Results

MOSTLY A: THE FORMAL BRIDE You definitely see yourself more as a bride who is looking forward to a formal, fancy and stylish wedding experience. You’re dream wedding is likely on the upper end of the wedding scale, and it is a great thing if you have the financial wherewithal to afford the best of everything for your special day. You are halfway there just by feeling entitled to it.

MOSTLY B: THE CASUAL, INCLUSIVE BRIDE You seek some tradition but look more toward intimacy, sentiment and inclusion of others. The wedding experience for you is meant to be shared with those you love and celebrated in a way that is affordable and manageable. While you might want a mid-sized affair, it can take just as much planning as a formal event; yet you are more likely to choose a slightly alternative approach.

MOSTLY C: THE OFF-BEAT BRIDE You are someone who dances to her own beat and wants a wedding to reflect that. You see your wedding special and personal creation, and intend to put your signature touch on every part of it. Because you are so creative and have so many ideas, you probably are an independent operator and would not enjoy hearing the input of others about what you should or shouldn’t do.

MOSTLY D: THE UN-BRIDE You prefer to take a low key approach. The idea of a wedding with all the trimmings does not appeal to you. You clearly prefer no frills, no fuss, no financial drain and no relatives telling you what to do. This is good in that you will have tremendous flexibility about where and when you wed, and whom you include. You can always include or adapt certain aspects that suit you.

RANDA ELBEHAIRY

a

mira Tharwat goes upclose and personal with star of Dar El Salam movie Randa El Behairy to tell us about her controversial role. The mother of 4 years old Yassin reveals all about her tips for bridesto-be to happy lasting marriage, and shares with us the reason behind the high rate of divorce nowadays.

Tell us more about your role in ‘Bent Men Dar El Salam,’ What is the reason behind all the controversy? The story that the movie tackles is quit bold and was never discussed on screen before except slightly through a movie called ‘Darb El Hawa.’ I play the role of a poor girl from Dar el Salam, who marries a man who is 40 years older than her, she actually really loved him. She then discovers after marriage that he suffers from fetishism, which is a psychological disease that makes him enjoy being humiliated during sex. It’s not really a fatal disease if the patient is open enough to go to a specialist, it can be cured. Are you pro tackling any issue in cinemas even if it’s sensitive or sexual? Actually, I believe that the cinema’s role is to discuss sensitive issues to find solutions for, but in a decent manner without condemning, stereotyping or accusing a certain category of the society, which is what we tried to do in ‘Bent Men Dar El Salam.’ The trailer of the movie might seem a little bit controversial, but the movie itself doesn’t contain anything offensive. The movie is directed by award winning director Tarek Nabeeh who is a student to legendary director Youssef Shahin and Khaled Youssef. What is the advice you will give to your son Yassin on his wedding day? He is only 4 years old now, but when the time comes I would tell him to treat his wife well, to remember God in every action he takes, and to try, as much as possible, not to hurt her, and of course to be wise dealing with his relationship with his wife. Also, I would advise him not to think too much of misunderstandings because they happen once you pay too much attention to them.

is not easy

What are your tips for a perfect marriage to brides-to-be? Since I was married before, I would tell any bride to take her time as much as she can before taking the decision that this is the person she wants to spend her life with. Also, I advice her to extend the engagement’s period as long as she can for two reasons; the memories of the engagement period will be the most beautiful and romantic memories, and secondly because the more she stays in a relationship with him, the better she will know him and know how to deal with him. The divorce rates are getting higher and higher, what are the reasons behind it in your opinion? I think it’s because of the speed of the age we live in; people are too hot tempered and can’t bare one another anymore. People might get a divorce for simple reasons like not being able to watch the channel he/ she wants! Also, having a partner who is available 24/7 is not that easy for some people; the marriage age now for girls and boys is getting late as people get married at the age of 35, so living on your own for that long and suddenly finding someone who will share your bed, your bathroom, and interfere in your life is not that easy.

Are you willing to wear the wedding dress once again? Only in a photo session like this one (laughs). No really, actually I didn’t wear it on my first wedding because I had an intuition that it’s not going to last for long, I will wear it for the first time when I am 100% sure that this is the right person. Do your criteria when choosing your Mr. Right now differ from the past? In the past, I didn’t have any requirements in the person I am going to marry, I used to fall for anyone that would show his love to me right away and enjoy the relationship. But now things are different, I became more picky and mature. Before, I was too romantic listening to my heart and neglecting my mind. Now, I have very different requirements, I want him to be mature and to love his mother, loving one’s family means that he is a good person who will treat me well. You mentioned once that marriage and career success can never come together, would you elaborate? I believe that being number one in any field and having a successful marriage at the same time is very hard, almost impossible. All the examples around me show that.

Tell us more about your health condition, are you better now? Yes thank God, I just had to do a surgery on my nose and it went well, but the nurse gave me a wrong medicine so, I had a severe internal bleeding, but thank God, it was controlled and I am fine now, it was a hard experience though. You are working now on the Arabic serial ‘Eshk El Nesaa,’ how far are you pro Arabic collaboration in art? I just finished shooting it in Lebanon, the experience is very useful for me as an actress because for example, the fans of Lebanese actress Ward El Khal will watch the serial so, they will get to know me, and the fans of Syrian actor Bassil El Khayat will also get to know me more, and my fans will see them both as well. So, it helps in an Arab actor’s exposure to expand to the rest of the Arab world. On the technical level, I hope there will be further cooperation because if we can make an Egyptian/Syrian TV serial, I think it will be flawless. You are a very devoted supporter to politician Hamden Sabahy, will you vote for him this time as well? I believe in Hamden and I feel he is the most suitable person to take this position, and I can sense how loyal he is to Egyptians and the country itself, which led me to support him in the previous presidential elections. However, this time I feel really exhausted from what happens in the political arena right now, so I prefer to step aside and focus on my work. What is your favourite place for relaxation? My home, I am a very home oriented person. Actually, I am working now on new renovations in my house and I am enjoying the process very much of buying furniture and designing a dressing room etc… as when it comes to travelling my favourite place in Egypt is Aswan. Who are your favourite designers and perfumes? I love Susha and Elie Saab. As for my favourite perfume, I like ‘The One by Dolce & Gabbanna’ and DKNY’s perfumes in general. Tell us about your role in ‘Wahed Saydy’… The movie is staring Mohamed Ramadan and I, which is coming out soon.

CAMERONcDIAZ

in THE OTHER WOMAN LOUNGE 36

ameron Diaz dazzles in ‘The Other Woman’, as Carly, a beautiful and successful lawyer who discovers that Mark, the charismatic man in her life, is married. She becomes friendly with Mark’s wife Kate, played by Leslie Mann, and they found out that the despicable rogue (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is also involved with a third woman, Amber (Kate Upton). The three develop a close bond and team up to exact revenge on the threetiming cheat. Hilarity ensues! Directed by Nick Cassavetes, at its heart this wonderfully upbeat comedy is all about the power of female friendship.

How would you describe Carly? Carly is a gal who’s chipping away at life. She’s a very successful lawyer. She’s dating and she meets a guy whom she thinks has real potential. They enjoy being with one another and she thinks that this could turn into something more. But she has the feeling something strange is going on, because he cancels a date that they had planned. He was going to meet her dad. All of a sudden he can’t come to dinner. He makes it really clear that he’s not available. Carly’s ears perk up. This relationship might not be exactly what she thought it was. She ends up going to Mark’s house and discovers that he’s married (laughs)! What is the film about essentially? It’s about friendship and about the relationship between these women. The film is about the circumstances that brought them together and the way that they move through the journey they take, getting through the heartbreak, towards the acceptance of the deception and then how they move forward and let it all go away. It’s not about revenge; it looks at how they learn about themselves. I have no interest in making a movie about revenge or adultery. That’s not what this is about. The girls do take steps to teach Mark a few lessons though don’t they, with very funny results. Can you discuss what they do? They do take the low road for a moment, sure, which is a fun part of the movie. They basically undermine all of the things that Mark depends on as a man. They take away his masculinity, his ability to manipulate all three women, which they can do because they have the upper hand now. He’s motivated by sex, so they won’t sleep with him. He relies on his looks, so they take a little jab at his own self-perception. Knowing that he is a liar, they realize he must be lying in other aspects of his life, and so they investigate his business deals. They want a little bit of justice. If you suffer from being deceived, you want the other person to hurt as badly as you do for a second. But once the women get over that, they thrive on the other side, and they are able to move on through their friendship. How valuable is friendship between women? The wonderful thing about female friendship is that we are always rooting for one another. Even when we’re not together, we know that our friends are there for us, with all their love and energy going towards something good. Friends support you no matter what. And friendship is so nurturing, it feeds your soul, because it’s positive energy. It’s all about acceptance and wanting one another to be stronger and better and more capable, helping each other through hard times, celebrating the good times, the ups and downs, being there through life as it plays out, not being judgmental, but being honest. How friendly did the three of you get while making The Other Woman? We were working twelve-hour days together. We were together all the time and a lot happens in a day. We made a movie together. We became good friends. How do you spend time with your friends? I go over to my girlfriends’ houses for dinner and we cook together and we hang out. We go out to the movies or watch a movie at the house. The movie looks at a man who is an incorrigible cheater. Do you think both

LOUNGE 37

men and women cheat, or do men cheat more? I think everyone, male or female, has been cheated on. I don’t know what the ratios are (laughs) or the percentiles, but nobody gets out unscathed. It’s something that happens and that we all have been through, I don’t think there are any exceptions. That’s just life. What do you think the film says about relationships? Whenever there’s an end, there’s a new beginning. You never know what’s going to happen next. You can’t waste your time and energy dwelling on what happened or what could’ve been or what might’ve been. Relationships come, relationships go, or they stay or evolve, but we stay alive. We see you and Leslie getting dressed up and looking fabulous. Do you think it is inevitable that women will look as sexy and attractive as possible, to please men? That’s part of nature. We’re animals, and on a certain level that comes innately to us. It’s like birds; they have feathers for a reason. Their plume, the color of their feathers changes at different times of the year, they fluff them up, they spread them out, they preen. Every animal has that instinct. It is because we are meant to procreate and that’s part of procreation, making ourselves attractive to another person. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

In one scene, you wear a white bikini on the beach and you look fabulous. Did you follow any special fitness regime prior to filming? No I didn’t do any specific workout for this movie, just my normal training, three or four times a week. Actually I have been in a little bit of a lull and have not trained as much as I normally do, because I’ve been so busy. But for me, well-being is all about taking care of yourself for the right reasons, being the best that you can and not changing yourself for somebody else’s sake. You are a great role model and you have just written a fantastic book: ‘The Body Book’, which is very comprehensive and rooted in science. What advice do you have for young women who worry about the way they look? The problem is that women are beautiful, other people see them as beautiful, but they don’t see themselves as beautiful. The reason I wrote the book is that I feel that the reason we don’t appreciate who we are, or what we have or what we’re capable of is that we’re not actually living in the bodies that we’re meant to have. We don’t understand how our bodies work, so we’re not able to provide them with what they need, in order to be the best that they’re capable of being. We compare ourselves to other women. That is a waste of energy and time. My needs, my

requirements, my energy and physical output are completely different from yours or any other person’s. Once you understand how your body works at a cellular level, you’re able to have the body you’re meant to have. You wear a series of stunning outfits in the film. How did you collaborate with costume designer, Patricia Field? Patricia and I agreed early on that Carly was a stylish, self possessed woman, who took pride in the way she looked. I wanted her to always be ‘done’. She puts herself together everyday. She curls her hair, she has her nails done, she does her make up. She’s a highfunctioning individual, a top lawyer who gets things done. She’s in her groove. I think the costumes really represent that well. Are you like that too? No (laughs). This is ‘put together’, (laughs) jeans and a tee shirt. You always seem very grounded, would you say that comes from your close family? You did not have a privileged upbringing. Not at all. Very much the opposite. But I had an amazing family, amazing parents who really taught me how to work hard and to

LOUNGE 38

have gratitude and to know that whatever you have, you’re lucky to have it. All day long they got me to do chores. They were actively teaching me all through my childhood, saying: ‘this is how it’s done.’ Ever since I was four years old, I’ve been doing my laundry (laughs). If you didn’t do it right, you had to do it again. You figure out how to do it properly. That has been my mentality my entire life: you just do the best you can every day. It sounds like they instilled strong values? Absolutely. They taught my sister and I that we could do whatever we wanted. My dad was willing to let us try out for the (American) football team ‘Pop Warner’, a children’s football league. He was like, ‘you can go ahead and do it. I’m just going to tell you there are some big boys out there. They’re going to hit you hard. They’re not going to pull any punches.’ He made us rethink it and we decided maybe we wouldn’t do that. But in my brain, I really thought that I could do it. I played softball in a team. I ran track. I grew up in the generation that still played outside with other kids. We were always riding our bikes, roller-skating and playing football in the

middle of the street. We grew up outside, not like kids today! It sounds like you are still very active. Yes, when I’m not working. I love surfing and snowboarding. You are so optimistic. How fulfilling is your career and life right now? I love my job because I love stories and I love telling stories. Every second of the day is different. I love to collaborate; I love being creative with other people, sharing information. Even though this movie is a comedy, I really feel it’s to let people know that women can be good to each other and champion one another, and that they don’t have to be competitive. I hate competition between women and I’m not a competitive person myself. I want everybody to succeed. Any dreams or specific goals? No, I’ve never been that way. I take life as it comes. I’m the kind of person who lives in the moment. I’m not somebody who asks: ‘what am I going to be doing? Who am I going to be doing it with?’ I’m really a kind of present person. I feel blessed with everything that I have in my life. I do not take any of it for granted.

METHODS OF BIRTH CONTROL

Postponing pregnancy is of course a common concern for newly weds especially at the beginning, but how to do this is the question. There are many types of methods of birth control for new brides and other methods for new moms. Lounge brings you some of the most common birth control methods, and why you should or shouldn’t try them.

COMBINATION PILL

This birth control mainstay is still 99% effective against pregnancy when taken around the same time every day. It’s also known for easing hot flashes and restoring regular periods. Women who smoke and who are 35 or older shouldn’t use this method as the estrogen may cause dangerous blood clots. If you suffer from migraines, you should also pass because it may trigger the painful headaches.

PROGESTIN-ONLY PILL

Known as the mini pill, progestin-only meds don’t contain estrogen. They’re safer for smokers, diabetics, and heart disease patients, as well as those at risk for blood clots. They don’t reduce the milk supply for women who are breast-feeding. If you have trouble remembering to take your pill at the same time every day, progestin-only pills might not be your best bet, they should be taken at exactly the same time every day. If you’re more than three hours late, plan on using a backup method.

EXTENDED-CYCLE PILL

The newest type of pill is especially designed for continuous use. Sometimes known as the extended-cycle pill, it either reduces the number of periods a woman has or eliminates them completely. Although it may seem unhealthy to limit or go completely without a period, it isn’t. The constant levels of estrogen and progestin keep the uterine lining very thin, so there isn’t really anything to shed anyway.

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

Emergency contraception is a backup for regular birth control. Plan B contains a higher dose of the same synthetic hormones found in the combination pill. It works best if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, but may work up to five days later. There’s also the copper T IUD, which a doctor can insert into your uterus five to seven days after unprotected sex.

VAGINAL RING

The ring is made of flexible plastic and delivers estrogen and progestin, just like the combination pill. You place the ring in your vagina for three weeks, and then remove it for one week so that you have a regular period. Women who smoke, or have blood clots or certain cancers, should not use the ring.

LOUNGE 44

DIAPHRAGM

Made of rubber and shaped like a dome, a diaphragm prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg. It covers the cervix and must always be used with a spermicide, a contraceptive substance that destroys sperms. Women must be fitted for a diaphragm in their doctor’s office. If your weight tends to fluctuate by more than 10 pounds at a time, the diaphragm may not work. If you gain or lose weight, you’ll need to be refitted. Also, if you are prone to bladder infections or had toxic shock syndrome, you might want to consider another option.

SAFE PERIOD

You need to determine infertile days or safe days when using this method to avoid or delay pregnancy. However, you need to keep track of your menstrual cycle. One way to track your fertility partterns is called the calender method.

CONDOM

A condom is used as a barrier to stop sperm. It is usually made of rubber. There are different types and sizes so, look for what works for you.

STERILIZATION

Women can undergo either tubal ligation, a surgical procedure that blocks the fallopian tubes from carrying eggs to the uterus, or tubal implants (Essure), a nonsurgical technique in which a small coil is inserted into the fallopian tubes. If you plan to have children, sterilization is not an option; it’s not designed to be reversible.

brand news Lights out for Maadi City Centre & Alexandria City Centre for Earth Hour

Maadi City Centre and Alexandria City Centre both underlined their commitment to improving the environment by celebrating Earth Hour. For 60 minutes from 8:30pm – 9:30pm on Monday, 31 March, all non-essential lights such as external signage, landscaping and external floor lights were turned off. For customer safety, interior mall lights will be dimmed, and all car park lighting will remain on. “Sustainability is one of our main focus areas and we were successfully able to make Earth Hour a key calendar event for our mall,” said Mostafa Kholief, Mall Manager for Maadi City Centre. “In one hour, by minimizing our electricity usage, we were able to save energy, reduce CO2 emissions and even make savings on costs; which is testament to how a serious commitment to simple sustainable practices can make a significant impact in the long-term.” Celebrating Earth Hour allowed Maadi City Centre to save around 1000 KW while Alexandria City Centre saved 2000 KW. Celebrating Earth Hour is not only supported by Majid Al Futtaim shopping malls in Egypt, but across the entire region.

FLOW: A Mother and Child Movement and Wellness Center: Supporting the Physical, Cognitive, and Socio-Emotional Development of Children The founders of FLOW, a Mother and Child Movement and Wellness Center highlighted the numerous benefits that Infant Massage, Baby Yoga, and Toddler Yoga classes can offer new mothers looking to bond with and nurture their young children. FLOW offers a range of classes, tailored to support the development of children aged 1 month to 5 years old. In the classes mothers learn specialized Massage and Yoga techniques that promote early childhood development. There is evidence to suggest that the regular practice of baby yoga and infant massage can help alleviate some of the common ailments experienced in the baby’s first year, such as colic and disturbances in sleep patterns. Talking about the importance of the center, Dr. Sarah El Tatawy, a Pediatrician specialized in Neonatal Medicine and Child Development said: “It is common for new mothers to feel stressed when coping with a newborn baby and this anxiety may be transferred to the baby. Providing an environment that offers a relaxing atmosphere for both mother and child is essential for the wellbeing of both.”

The all-new Head & Shoulders leaves you 100% uninterrupted and dandruff free

The end of dandruff and itch is closer than you think with the Head & Shoulders’ new formula and complete lineup, which addresses women’s hair care needs, promising 100% dandruff free hair with the first wash. How? Thanks to the new ZPT particle technology, exclusive to Head & Shoulders, which is so small yet is able to fight the bacteria causing even the tiniest flakes. The new ‘smart’ formula doesn’t stop there. It continues to work when you need it the most: between washes. Its Actizinc elements stay in your scalp to fight dandruff and keep it from re-appearing even after your shower. For all this and more, it is no surprise that the Egyptian Society for Dermatologists (ESDV) recommends using Head & Shoulders. It’s no secret that we, women fear that an anti-dandruff shampoo might make our hair and scalp dry, and so we only use it temporarily, and when the dandruff appears.

zodiac

Capricorn Dec.23 - Jan.20 You’ll deeply feel the need for emotional safety. In May 2014, your preferences will go towards a peaceful life, warmth and privacy. You want a relationship that offers certainty. You might talk to your partner about starting a family or, if you have already done it, about building or buying a house, about redecorating the accommodation or about other things that will make your living together more comfortable, more fulfilling and beautiful. You will receive guests or will arrange family reunions. Sexuality will be more developed, richer, but you’ll control it carefully and you won’t fully allow it to manifest unless you are certain of the feelings the person you want to share it with has. You might be haunted by the nostalgia for a past love, or somebody you once had an affair with might come into your way. Professionally speaking, a certain change of rhythm or climate can make its presence felt right in the middle of May 2014, which can offer you a lot if you know how to manage its resources.

Aquarius Jan.21 - Feb.19 You might now read about sex, find out useful information for the private life or try new things, not experimented before. Attraction will be stimulated by communication and by intellectual compatibility. The last decanate of May 2014 will be a real treat, though; it’ll be the time of romanticism, of sensuality, adventure, passionate love. Enjoy every moment of it. May 2014 will be very creative intellectually speaking. You’ll have new, original and ingenious ideas, you’ll manifest well in scientific, literary activities or activities that are related to information, calculation, processing or disseminating data. You’ll promote your business, creations or interests excellently, either by discourse, or by various means that make information circulate. In May 2014 you’ll have great capacity to persuade and express verbally, priceless if you need to make a presentation, to participate in negotiation, to give lectures, attend interviews or sit oral exams.

Pisces Megan Fox, May 16, 1986

Feb.20 - Mar.21 May 2014 will be a rather stable period for you, in which domestic and financial preoccupations will prevail. You’ll now learn to appreciate comfort, safety, and genuine, but quiet affection. You won’t be very inclined towards wild and restless passion. You won’t be willing to take too much trouble, nor to take big risks, at least for now. The couple partner will rather act as a business associate with whom you’ll decide what you need to purchase, how money needs to be managed or how you can raise your income. You might as well rely on a family member to make some changes, bring something new or fix something around the house. If you’re in the situation of choosing a partner, in May 2014 the choice will take into consideration that person’s capacity of providing welfare and safety. Intellectual activities will be privileged all throughout May 2014 and you’ll be at an advantage as regards communication and sharing information. The first week of May 2014 will particularly be good for writing, calculating, negotiating, persuading and giving speeches.

Aries Mar.22 - Apr.20

Happy Birthday

Taurus LOUNGE 62

Be happy! Love, benevolence, joy, pleasures and beauty will make more and more place in your life. You’ll pay a lot of attention to the way you look, and you’ll choose grace and elegance more often than usual. Your charm will soften, seduce and win people over. There will be more circumstances with romantic potential or they will be more significant. You’ll long for love, you’ll look for it and draw it to you. Or maybe love will come to you by itself, even if you were not expecting it. And you can’t say no to it. The spices in your sentimental life will manifest in the second decanate of May 2014. It’s still then that surprises or troubles can occur. At the professional level, May 2014 will be a very active period, but more efficient in the second half.

Taurus

Gemini

Apr.21 - May 21

May.22 - Jun.21

May is generally a good month for you as it brings you a lot of reasons for satisfaction, but in 2014 it does not promise much as regards sentimental fulfillment. Things will happen at a mental or psychical level rather than a factual one. You could experience moments of loneliness or disappointment, of sacrifice, re-assessment or gestation. You’ll find it difficult to open to relationships, you’ll avoid expressing your feelings and you’ll face various limitations. At the professional level, you will gain your vitality and confidence, will highlight you and help you make a good impression. In May 2014, you’ll have more initiative and power of decision, you’ll differentiate more easily between what’s important and what comes second, you’ll focus on objectives better. It’s possible that you’ll sometimes get the impression that somebody is opposing you or holding you back, or that you’ll have to manage critical situations.

Your interests in May 2014 seem to be especially of a practical nature rather than a sentimental one. Relationships can be very pleasant and comfortable as long as the spirit of friendship prevails and the couple shares preoccupations, but they will tend to operate at a rational level and somehow impersonal or superficial. May 2014 won’t be one of those periods full of thrill and emotion that make you all excited, but it can be a period in which you’ll have good fun and you’ll laugh a lot by the side of your partner. There will be more opportunities to join parties with friends or group actions, and on one of these occasions a love story could begin. Your mind will permanently work and words will come very easily in conversations, negotiations, discourses or written papers. May 2014 will be excellent for conception work, calculations or reasoning, but also for public presentations, participation in courses, conferences, or congresses.

Cancer

Leo

Jun.22 - Jul.23

Jul.24 - Aug.23

May 2014 will not lack tension for you; however, in spite of this fact, the situation will be quite stable. You might go through moments in which you and your partner will have different visions on the same thing and you’ll find it difficult to negotiate an acceptable solution for both; you might sometimes have the sensation that the other one doesn’t understand you or doesn’t give you enough attention, or you might have to join your forces against some trial from the outside. On the other hand, you’ll have the tendency to raise the standards, to have higher expectations than before. Moreover, you’ll have a rather subjective attitude and you’ll withdraw into yourself too easily when something is not to your like. If you took things in a more relaxed way and with more humor, you’d only gain from it.

Love will have the capacity to influence your thinking and ideas, to open new horizons to you. In May 2014, you will be able to explore unexpected spiritual dimensions or to discover the world by the side of the person they love. Romantic trips and relationships that will begin at a distance or that will transcend cultural, religious or even moral barriers will be further possibilities. On the other hand, you will greatly need privacy at the emotional level. You won’t be as expansive as before, nor will you feel like talking about your feelings with anybody, at anytime. Yes, you do like to have public appearances, to socialize, maybe even more than in the previous months, but when it comes to the couple life, you want to keep it far away from indiscrete eyes. Or maybe you’re going through a period of loneliness?

Virgo

Libra

Aug.24 - Sep.23

Sep.24 - Oct.23

This month, feelings will become more intense, experiences deeper, and attention will go to psychological aspects of the relationship, to its mysterious side, which demands to be deciphered. In May 2014, love could stimulate your financial instinct, turn the budget upside down or interfere with material interests one way or another. At the professional level, May 2014 foreshadows to be excellent, with great accomplishing potential. It will lend you ambition, clarify objectives and help you focus on them. It’ll offer you the opportunity to be remarked, to progress, to conquer glory and honours. You’ll benefit from popularity and will be provided with support and protection in reaching the desired aims, which is favourable to success with studies, trips, longdistance collaborations, cultural and spiritual procedures.

This month, your need for affection will grow, you’ll turn towards the other one more easily and you’ll be more inclined towards behaving in a coquettish and seductive way. It’ll be the time when you can conquer, consolidate, make up. If you don’t have a relationship yet, you’ll start looking for it with enthusiasm, and if you have one, you’ll try to make it sweeter, more cheerful and more pleasant. With such charming behaviour, of course you’ll get similar feedback. However watch out, though, towards the middle of May 2014, because unexpected situations might occur. At the professional level, this month promises chances and opportunities. Your finances will evolve satisfactorily and there might appear new business or investment ideas.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

Oct.24 - Nov.22

Nov.23 - Dec.22

May 2014 will be important for your relationships as it will increase your need to be with someone, to reflect yourself in the other one. It’s not the time of loneliness, but the time of fusion, of sharing, of communion. In this period you’ll be more attentive to the person by your side, you’ll have availability to understand him/her, to look at things from their point of view as well. In their turn, they might need your attention more than usual. If you don’t have a partner yet, in May 2014 you might meet somebody, most probably in the environment you work in or due to these work relationships. At the professional level, you will focus on cooperation. By no means will it be the time of independent actions, but essentially the time of collaboration or of teamwork. You will favour public and customer relations and can bring new contracts.

May 2014 promises to be sensual, full of very attractive offers. It’ll come surrounded by waves of romanticism and will radiate the irresistible scent of seduction. It’ll urge you to show your sex-appeal and coquetry and will lure you to places and circumstances you can meet love in. at the professional level, the first two decanates of May 2014 will be very active professionally speaking. You can expect events that will highlight your skills, and accomplishments you can be proud of. There will be opportunities that will turn you into a sort of star, admired and respected, or a leader or coordinator of activities, independent when taking action or decisions. Financially speaking, you’ll be very well as long as you don’t launch yourself into careless actions.

REASONS YOU SHOULDN’T BE

s

A BRIDESMAID

eeing your best friend walking down the aisle is an amazing feeling that every girl wishes her girl friend, but seeing her in the white gown from a bridesmaid perspective is a whole different story. If any of the reasons below apply then, you better give up the title nicely.

You’re surprised you’re invited to the 1 wedding at all, If you are not that close to the bride this means that she invites you

for two reasons either she is stuck, or you are too good looking so she wants to brag about with you in her wedding pictures. Her groom is your ex. She is trying to be as decent as possible by breaking the tension and giving you a huge part of the big day. But, this will lead to more tension and stress even if you are okay with the whole thing, people will still gaze at you all through the evening. You’re being asked just weeks before the wedding, which might require helping the bride with her demands and thus, reschedule all your appointments or you will disappoint your best friend on the most important day of her life, of course you don’t want to do that.

2 3

LOUNGE 64

You didn’t like the bridesmaid uniform. 4 As a bridesmaid, a bride’s wish must be your demand as she will return the favour for

you one day but, when it comes to how you look in your best friend’s big day with pictures that will haunt you forever, you need to be cautious. You were not invited to the Henna or Bachelorette Party; if the bride didn’t bother inviting you to her house then, it means she doesn’t consider you that close but, maybe she knows you are one of the few girls who she can rely on. She is a beast on everyday life; even the most angelic friend loses it when it comes to her wedding, thanks to the pressure society puts on her, if your friend is already of the demanding type and a control freak, she will turn into a true uncontrollable bridezilla so, better than losing your friend forever quit the battle field. She asked you to change your haircut for her big day; your friend should accept you and like you the way you are, it’s ok to recommend a new look or help you add some touches but, if she wants you to do a drastic transformation in your looks for her big day, this might not be a good sign. You are jealous, you won’t admit it to anyone but yourself and it’s ok to feel a little green but, if you feel that witnessing every step of the wedding and sharing in all the minute details of your best friend’s wedding will bring you to grief then, you

5 6 7 8

could find any good excuse to not accept the title as you may not know it but it will be clear if you don’t feel comfortable during the event. She didn’t ask you herself to be the bridesmaid. Carrying this title means that you will be directly in contact with the bride and the last thing you want to feel that she is forced to deal with you. If you are asked to be a bridesmaid by your brother in his wedding or by the bride’s mom, be sure that there is something wrong even if the bride asked you later on. You think she is doing a big mistake by marrying this guy. If you are not blessing this relationship from the beginning and feeling that your best friend is doing the mistake of her life by marrying this guy then, you shouldn’t be part of this. You don’t have enough money. Being a bridesmaid requires a lot of energy and money as well starting with going to the designer who will design your dress and ending with the expensing of going here and there choosing the wedding souvenirs etc… You are not that independent. Being a bridesmaid means the bride will rely on you in picking up her wedding veil and confirming the coiffeur’s appointment so, if you don’t have a car and you are not familiar with directions, you will be an obstacle more than a helping hand so, save the bride the hassle and let her pick someone else more helpful.
