Martin Kolacek : Grunt RX-10 ‘Look, Grunt, if I was a man I could have been a priest. I tried to persuade them they needed a nun. But they’ve got that democratic system of theirs so they were afraid they might end up as nuns instead. Absolute macho tyrants these guys are! I told them I’d do it permanently. They told me I’m a fanatic and threw me out.’ ‘So why did you join the Grave committee? You should have had many other opportunities.’ ‘Like what? I tried to be a hairdresser. But my first customer tried to commit suicide with curling tongs after about half an hour talking with me. That was when the Grave committee noticed me for the first time. Then, I was a shopkeeper in a food shop. A real luxury one. Fried rats, concrete worms, a green goo from... whatever it was. Anyway, the people seemed to like me. They spent hours with me, talking. They told me they remembered me every time they ate.’ ‘What went wrong then?’ ‘They all died of malnutrition.’ Donna seemed to be on the verge of tears. ‘They were all anorexics. They connected me with food so they never wanted to eat again. And they succeeded. When anyone tried to make them eat something they started crying and their white faces were full of an immense terror.’ The first tears started pouring from her eyes. He knew he should do something. After all, his questions were the reason she was crying. ‘You don’t scare me at all,’ he tried saying, but it didn’t help in any way. He had to add more emotions, ‘On the contrary, I really enjoy talking with you.’ ‘Oh, Grunt!’ Donna screamed and she thrust herself around his neck. 106
