Reports

President’s and CEO’s Reports President’s Report Dear Members,

Ian McCann

Thank you to those members that attended the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 22 May. I am honoured to have been re-elected President of this great Club. In all, seven of the eight directors were returned unoposed with the only change being the election of Alan Fowler, who replaces the retiring Ken Darke.

Ken Darke has served the members of Wenty Leagues as a Director for 29 years, including a record 15 years as Vice President. In April, Ken made the decision that it was time to retire from the Club Board and hand the baton to the next generation. As would be expected from Ken, he did so with little fanfare. Ken, we wish you all the best and on behalf of my fellow Directors, I thank you for your many years of loyal service. On behalf of the Board I express our gratitude to the membership for their faith in us. The stability afforded to us by the members allows us to continue implementing the strategic plan which was developed by this board in our previous terms. At the AGM I was pleased to present to members a profit for 2010 of $1,271,404. This excellent result comes off the back of both an increase in revenue and a reduction in costs. In April work commenced on the construction of a new car park adjacent to the Club. By the time you are reading this I expect that work will be well underway with thirteen houses alongside our exit driveway demolished and earthworks in full swing. A tender process for the new children’s play area and reception refurbishment has commenced and we look forward to getting work underway in these areas soon as well. Until next time. Ian McCann President

Board of Directors

CEO’s Report Dear Members, Congratulations to the Board for being elected unopposed for another two year term. Unlike many clubs, our management team and board have enjoyed a close and productive working relationship in recent times and this has allowed us to develop a sound strategic plan to deliver great Dave Brace outcomes for the business. Our respected Vice President, Ken Darke, has decided after 29 years to pass on the baton. I thank Ken for his hard work. We have often used his experience and knowledge as a sounding board for any new ideas. A warm welcome to our new Vice President Alan Fowler. He is well known to the club and will be a great asset. It has been a tough time for clubs in recent years with increased poker machine tax and smoking legislation. We were recently afforded some breathing space when the Liberals won the state election. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that clubs signed with the Liberals was their biggest election promise in terms of dollars. We now have some assurance in our planning for the future with the support of state government in the form of stable legislation. The MOU can be viewed on our website under ‘Your Club’. Unfortunately just when we thought we finally had the support from all sides of politics, a deal was struck by Prime Minister Gillard with Tasmanian Independent Andrew Wilkie, to introduce mandatory pre-commitment technology to poker machines. Until now poker machine legislation was under state jurisdiction. Under the terms of the Gillard/Wilkie deal, anyone wishing to play a poker machine will need to register with a national database to receive an identification card, a ‘Licence to Punt’. Wilkie himself estimates that club’s revenue will fall by 40%. If you are concerned about the threat that this untested, unproven and poor policy poses to your Club, then I urge you to visit the website www.its-unaustralian.com.au and sign a petition against a ‘Licence to Punt’ . I look forward to seeing you around the club. Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer

Get to Know Your Board Alan Fowler Vice President Wenty’s newest director, Alan Fowler joined the Club Board in May 2011. A well known and highly respected member, Alan is the Principal of Laing & Simmons Real Estate Agency in Wentworthville. Moving to Merrylands as a young boy, Alan attended Parramatta High School. After school he initially embarked upon a career in accountancy but it wasn’t long before his true passion, Real Estate took hold. In 1995 Alan opened the first of his own Real Estate businesses in Parramatta, closely followed by his second office in Wentworthville, which continues to this day. Originally settling in Greystanes and then Wentworthville Alan now resides in Old Toongabbie. His relationship with Wenty Leagues started when he was very young, but it wasn’t until 1986 that he began regularly visiting the Club before joining in February 1987.

Development Update Construction has started on the new car parking area adjacent to the Club. In this first stage, 13 houses alongside the exit driveway are being demolished to make way for additional car parking. When complete, the team will then move onto the construction of the slip lane to provide direct access from the Great Western Highway and the refurbishment of the existing car park. Importantly, the development is being managed so as to provide almost no disruption to members with car parking numbers retained at the existing level throughout. When completed there will be around 230 additional car parking spaces, most of which will be located close to the main foyer.

With Alan’s first child also born in 1987, Wenty’s Imperial Dragon restaurant soon became a family favourite, one that he has continued to this day with the family dining almost weekly in this Wenty institution. Alan has always been a tremendous supporter of Wenty Leagues’ sporting clubs and has sponsored many of them over the years, including more than ten years as one of the major sponsors of the Bowling Club. In 2005 Alan was coaxed back onto the Bowling Greens and today he is not just a sponsor of the Bowls Club, but also an active participant on the greens too. After years of prompting by many members, Alan was finally persuaded to stand for the Board of Wenty Leagues Club. It was a decision that he had been contemplating for some time but wanted to ensure that he was able to devote the time and energy that the position deserved before he ran. In joining the Board Alan will not only bring considerable business experience to the team but also a solid understanding of the local community and the Club’s 35,000 strong membership base. Alan is married to wife Carmel and has two children, son Aaron and daughter Zoe. Favourite Show at Wenty? The Radiators Beverage of Choice? Scotch and Dry NRL team? Community

In the Community Speedy Service Not content with bringing excellent service to his customers in Lucido Italian Restaurant, Supervisor Mohammad Ali has now added ‘Fastest Waiter in Holroyd’ to his list of credentials. On Saturday 9 April Mohammad beat a crack field of local wait staff to win the Annual Holroyd CityFest Waiter’s Race. It was the first time in the history of the race that a business outside of Merrylands has won. Mohammad not only won the race but drew glowing praise from event organisers for his sportsmanship. Well done Mohammad!

The Road to Independence Driving is an important part of a person’s lifestyle and often contributes to their independence. Commonly, this self-sufficiency and freedom is taken for granted. Driving a motor vehicle is a complex task and requires many different skills which may be affected following injury or illness. Sydney’s Royal Rehabilitation Centre is helping those affected by injury, disability and/or illness ease into the driver’s seat through their Driving Assessment Centre. The programs provided by the Driving Assessment Centre allow these drivers to regain driving skills, confidence and independence in a safe and supportive environment. Programs are tailored to the needs of each individual to maximise their opportunities to obtain a licence or to return to driving. Wenty Leagues recently donated $2,500 to help subsidise the program for members of the Holroyd community who may not otherwise be able to undertake the program due to their financial situation. For more information on Royal Rehab’s Driving Assessment Centre phone Kelly Brown on 9808 9369 or visit www.royalrehab.com.au A Physiotherapist and Driving Instru ctor providing confidence and re-assurance to a stroke clien t, learning new hand-control skills in the modified vehicle at the Driving Assessment Centre.

Wenty’s own Celebrity Chef For the second year in a row Wenty Leagues’ Operations Manager, Food & Beverage and accomplished Chef Simon Skelton has taught thousands of people at the Royal Easter Show how to cook. Representing Meat & Livestock Australia and NSW Farmers in the Food Farm, Simon took to the stage twice a day to teach a range of techniques including how to cook the perfect steak. Simon even got to impart some culinary skills on special guests including Terry Lamb & Brett Kimmorley.

WHO VOTED FOR A LICENCE TO PUNT? If the government get their way, you’ll have to apply for a licence just so you can have a $5 punt. They want to treat ordinary punters as problem gamblers. But you didn’t vote for it and you don’t have to put up with it. Visit our campaign website to say No.

INDOOR BOWLS

NSW Cup

At the moment we have a full complement of bowlers for Wednesdays, however we are in need of bowlers for Thursday evenings. Come along and have a try! All you need to start off is a pair of bowls shoes (no heels and no pattern on the sole of any kind). If you would like to join us at Wentworthville Leagues indoor bowls, a shirt will be provided. Joining fees are $10 annually. Our last competition, the Mixed drawn triples was played on April 17. A wonderful day was had by all and congratulations go to all the players who helped make the day such a success. A very special thanks goes to Carmen & Robert Jones and Joe Fenech for the work they put in to make everything run smoothly on the day. Winners: Sheelah Poulton (Lead), Judith Norgrove (Second), Robert Jones (Skip). Runners Up: Ronda May (Lead), John Chew (Second), Col O’Brien (Skip). Our upcoming competitions include the Ladies Singles on June 19, the Men’s Singles on August 7 and the Drawn Mixed Pairs on September 18. Results of these games will be in a later edition of the Journal. Fay Peter – Publicity Officer

After what was a strong recruiting of personnel during the off season and with an expectation of a strong contingent of Parramatta players, Coach Brett Cook would have been looking forward to a successful season. The NSWRL Competitions commenced on March 12 with a Launch at Leichhardt Oval. Wentworthville were matched against a strong Auckland Vulcans side and although being competitive were ultimately beaten 20-12. Following a bye in Round 2, Wenty were then able to string together 3 wins against Windsor Wolves 30-18 , Balmain Tigers 18-12 and Manly 20-4 before losing to the 2010 Premiers Canterbury 44-12 and the very strong Cronulla 34-6. Injuries in the Parramatta NRL team have not allowed the normal numbers of players to come back to NSW Cup. This has subsequently put a drain on our Bundy Cup and with continued changing of players obviously effects preparation and combinations. Bundy Cup Coach Aaron McDonald’s expectations of a strong defence of the Premiership won last season started off in the right direction with wins against Kingsgrove Colts 32-14, Bankstown Bulls 20-10, and Windsor Wolves 3818, before losses to the hot Cabramatta 56-24 and The Entrance 30-10. The ship was steadied with a win against Bankstown Sports 17-16 after being behind 16 nil at half time, before a loss to the strong Mounties side 28-18. With another good win against Kingsgrove Colts 54-8, the team is back playing good football. Similar to losses in the NSW Cup, injuries to higher tiered teams have drained on the personnel available. When things settle down I’m sure the best of this team is yet to come. Upcoming events The very popular Annual Family Fun Day run in conjunction with the Wentworthville Leagues Club will be held on July 24. We are looking forward to another huge day. Further info can be found on p11 of this Journal. The Board of WDRLFC have appointed stalwart and long serving player Mark Luland as Club Captain. Congratulations Mark. Ron Bottle - Secretary

WHEELKINGS The WheelKings are about to enter their 10th National Wheelchair Basketball League season sponsored by Wenty Leagues and firmly believe that this year’s team is primed to return to the playoffs. After a disappointing 5th place finish in 2010, the team has put in 4 months of pre-season training and have moved to a new, high-quality venue at the Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre, Coddington Rd, Darlington. They will play 4 games there with the other 2 ‘home’ games to be played in Darwin in late August as a showcase for this exciting sport. It is a major promotional coup for the NWBL which will hopefully lead to a team from Darwin entering the league in the coming years. Whilst there, the WheelKings will be doing clinics for disabled youth, particularly from the Aboriginal community. The Northern Territory government is on board and hopefully will be bringing in disabled children from remote communities to join in the fun.

The Wentworthville Leagues Club Group supports the Responsible Service of Alcohol and the Responsible Conduct of Gaming

CHILDREN Wenty Leagues Club is a family friendly venue and we welcome children of all ages. To ensure that all of our customers have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable experience, the Club has a number of rules in place for children when on our premises as follows: • Children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult at all times. • Children are not permitted to be in the Wentworth Bar & Lounge, the Explorers Bar & Lounge, the Magpie Bar, the TAB or the Gaming Floor area (even when accompanied by an adult). • Children are not permitted on Club premises after 9:30pm and will not be

admitted onto Club premises after 9:00pm (unless attending a private function or finishing dining in the Imperial Dragon Restaurant). • Use of the play area located adjacent to the Lucido Lounge is restricted to children aged between 2 and 7 inclusive. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times when they are utilising the play area. • The play area will close at 9:00pm each night. • Children must have footwear on at all times including when using the play area. The accompanying responsible adult is to ensure that their child behaves in an

appropriate manner when on Club premises and refrains from behaviour which is likely to cause discomfort or inconvenience to other patrons. Such behaviour includes, but is not limited to, loud squealing, running around unsupervised between tables, swearing and pushing or fighting with other children. Unacceptable behaviour of a Minor may result in the Minor and their accompanying Responsible Adult being asked to leave the Club premises.
