President’s Report

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members,

Thank you to everyone that attended the Club’s General Meeting on 25 October. At the meeting we presented an update of the Club’s trading position which continues to track ahead of budget for 2010 and significantly ahead of our 2009 position. This is particularly pleasing given that much of the hospitality industry has been doing it tough this year.

It’s shaping up as a great couple of months to be a member of Wenty Leagues, with a packed calendar of activities over Christmas and New Year’s. Our famous Christmas Raffles started on 28 November and in just four weeks this year we will be giving members the chance to win more than $36,000 of prizes in our Toy, Seafood, Hamper and weekly Ham, Pork

Dave Brace

We have commenced planning for the first stage of development, which will start in early 2011. In the first stage we will focus on upgrading the capacity and quality of our car park as well as some internal works including a refurbishment of our existing main foyer and the construction of a larger internal children’s play area to replace the existing outdoor play area. As previously advised, it is our intention to stage the Club’s development in a fiscally prudent manner and as such the majority of these first stage works will be funded from the recent sale of our Parkes Street property in Parramatta as well as existing cash flow.

and Turkey Raffles.

Along with redevelopment of our main premises, the Board has committed to replacing the dilapidated stand on the Western side of Ringrose Park. On Monday 15 November we held a briefing session with members to outline our draft proposal and seek input into the project and I thank all those members that took the time to attend. As advised at the meeting, the project to construct a new stand will be staged over a number of years with the first stage to commence in late 2011 in order to be completed in time for the commencement of the 2012 season. Details of the proposal are placed onto the Club’s website if anyone would like to view them and make comment.

It has now been more than six months since Lucido was relaunched as Lucido Italian Restaurant. I am pleased to report that the new menu has been very well received with trade up more than 31% and on most weekends the restaurant is now fully booked. If you haven’t yet had a chance to sample the new menu, I recommend that you give the lamb shanks a try, it’s one of my favourite dishes.

On behalf of the Board I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

New Year’s Eve is shaping up as one of our best yet with two of Wenty’s most popular acts booked to perform. In the Starlight Room function we have secured one of Sydney’s most popular acts Abbalanche. This is sure to be a great night including a sumptuous three course meal. On the Lucido stage we’ve got Wenty favourites The Frocks and if you want to treat yourself before the show you can book a superb 5 star dinner in Lucido Italian Restaurant. Add to this plenty of party paraphernalia and the traditional walkthrough from the pipe band, it’s sure to be a memorable night.

Congratulations to all of Wenty’s successful sporting teams in 2010. Of particular note the Magpies won their second consecutive Bundaberg Red Cup defeating the Bankstown City Bulls. This capped off a memorable day for the Magpies with the A Grade side winning their 8th consecutive premiership defeating Cabramatta 44-30 in the inaugural Sydney Shield competition. I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Community

In the Community Get to know your Board! Wenty Leagues Club has 8 directors, but many of you probably know little more about the members charged with overseeing the running of your club beyond their smiling faces adorning the wall of the foyer. So, to fill in the blanks your Editor will be spending a few minutes getting to know each of them over the next few issues. Tony Branson Director Any Rugby League supporter born prior to the 1970’s shouldn’t have too much trouble recognising the name Tony Branson. Born and bred in Nowra Tony grew up playing rugby league from the age of 9, before securing his spot as five-eighth with the Nowra Warriors as a teenager. At 20, Tony was chosen to represent Country for the first time in 1967 before going on to play for Australia on the Kangaroo tour that same year. Tony played in five games whilst on tour and upon returning to Australia was snapped up by the St George Dragons. During his time at St George, Tony was also a member of Australia’s 1968 World Cup Squad and played with Australia in the 1971 NZ tour as well as representing NSW and City. After retiring from Rugby League Tony moved to Wentworthville with partner Heather. One night whilst enjoying a quiet beverage at his new local club, Wenty Leagues, Tony ran into fellow Kangaroo team mate Keith (Boof) Campbell who just happened to be the then Wentworthville District Rugby League Football Club President. Upon Boof’s urging Tony soon found himself working with Wenty’s Rugby League sides and the following year was coaching the under 19s. It wasn’t long before Tony found himself on the Committee of the Wentworthville Junior Rugby League Football Club. In 2000 Tony was elected to the Board of Wenty Leagues Club and in 2004 was awarded Life Membership of the Junior Football Club. Tony only recently retired as President of the Juniors but continues to be involved with Wenty Rugby League, however these days it’s as a supporter and spectator. You’ll find him at most games across many different grades. Tony has two sons, a daughter and two grandsons. Favourite Show at Wenty – Col Joye (Australian Rock n Roll singer who had four consecutive national number 1 hits) Beverage of choice – VB NRL team – St George Illawarra Dragons (of course) Favourite meal at Wenty – Lemon Sole from Lawsons Bistro

3D TV Winners Laurie Capovilla Director

Congratulations to Sarabjeet Singh Kaira,

Born and raised in Griffith, Laurie moved out of the family home to live initially in Redfern before beginning his own family home in Greystanes in 1971 with wife Yvonne. Not long after moving to Greystanes Laurie began working at Wenty Leagues part time and also began playing rugby league with the Wenty Magpies. At the Leagues Club Laurie quickly became a floor supervisor and when his playing days finished he joined the board of the Wentworthville Rugby League Football Club. 1989 was a big year for Laurie. He was made a Life Member and elected President of the Football Club and was also elected to the Board of the Leagues Club.

Harold Lockhart, Patrick Muscat and Leanne Robertson who were the Club’s 3D TV Package winners back on Sunday 19 September. These four lucky winners each took home a Samsung 3D TV package valued at $5,000.

Laurie currently works as a State Sales Manager for a Brisbane-based office supplies company and when he’s not at work or in The Magpie Bar trying to back a winner you’ll find him enjoying a game of golf at Cumberland Golf Course. Laurie and Yvonne will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this coming February and have created somewhat of a Rugby League Dynasty at Wenty. Their three boys have been great players for the Magpies, with the youngest of the three retiring just last year. Darren, the eldest, played junior football for Wenty before playing representative football for Parramatta and Wests. Adam played junior and senior football for the Magpies, amassing over 300 games and was awarded life membership of both Football Clubs. Brad, the youngest of the boys, played his 315th game for Wenty last year and was also awarded life membership of both Football Clubs. Along with their three sons, Laurie and Yvonne have six grandkids – also all boys, so there’s a good chance that the Capovilla dynasty will continue into a third generation!

In the Community Pink Ribbon Day

Men of League

Wenty Leagues staff were again at their generous best on Monday 25 October for Pink Ribbon Day. Staff donned all manner of pink uniform items from shirts through to pink ties and donated $524 on the day. Money raised from Pink Ribbon Day goes to the Cancer Council for breast cancer research, education and patient support programs.

Wenty Leagues recently provided a $20,000 CDSE grant to The Men of League Foundation. The Foundation supports former rugby league players, coaches, administrators, referees, officials and their families who have fallen on hard times. Club President Ian McCann was given the opportunity to view first hand the work of Men of League joining league legend Noel Kelly when they visited Peter Brennan of Prospect. Five years ago Peter fell from his roof and became a quadriplegic. While walking his dog he was fined $164 by the council ranger for not having his dog on a lead. As a result, Peter has not been able to walk his dog which was a daily ritual he cherished. Men of League stepped in to assist Peter by covering the cost of dog lessons so his dog will walk beside his wheelchair, enabling Peter to walk the dog again, and providing repairs to Peter’s wheelchair.

CareFlight

The Giving Tree

Through the CDSE program Wenty Leagues recently provided a grant of $11,000 to CareFlight. Based at Westmead Hospital, CareFlight provide rapid response critical care to the ill and injured. Their specially trained doctors, nurses and paramedics use helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and road ambulances to bring a hospital level of care to patients. CareFlight rely mostly on private funding for their life saving service.

The Giving Tree is your chance to brighten the life of someone less fortunate this Christmas. Pick up a gift tag from The Giving Tree and buy a person in need a special gift. Gifts donated will be delivered to Community Aid, Parramatta/Holroyd Family Support and the Church of Christ Community Care Crisis Centre. The giving tree is located at Wenty Leagues in the Lawsons Bistro area. You can choose a tag and return your gift to the tree. Alternatively, you can drop off your gift at Holroyd City Council. The gifts will be delivered in time for Christmas so please ensure you return your gift before Friday, 17 December 2010.

Director Adam Cromack and Vice President Ken Darke took a tour of the CareFlight facility with Meghan Long of CareFlight.

JANUARY Entertainment ON THE ROAD AGAIN SATURDAY JANUARY 1

7PM

This is a celebration of the music and lives of Willie Nelson & Roy Orbison. Individually, they were two of the most influential performers of our era. John Robertson is uncanny in his portrayal of Willie Nelson. His manner, speech and delivery of songs including ‘Stardust’, ‘To all the Girls I’ve Loved Before’ and ‘On the Road Again’ are truly like watching Willie himself. Mark Shelley as Roy Orbison, is one of only a few in the world with the vocal range and tone who can deliver an Orbison song as Roy himself did. Seemingly effortless and full of emotion as he performs Orbison hits including ‘Crying’, ‘In Dreams’, ‘Only the Lonely’. Tickets: MEMBERS $8 I Non Members $10 ON SALE: MONDAY DECEMBER 6

Sub Clubs

Sub Clubs DISTRICT FOOTBALL NSW Cup The season for the NSW Cup ended in game 2 of the semi final series, going down to Western Suburbs. The Brett Kenny coached side played well at various stages of the season and were capable of matching the best sides in the competition on their day, but realistically they probably did not reach full potential. There were plenty of highlights during the year which have been mentioned previously. The latest highlight being Etu Uaisele being selected to represent Tonga in the International Tournament played in tandem with the 4 Nations Series. Congratulations to the following award winning players for the season: Best Back - Tom Humble Best Forward - Anthony Mitchell Coaches Award - Taniela Lasalo Best and Fairest - Nathan Armit Brett Cook has been appointed the NSW Cup coach for season 2011. Brett has graduated through the Wenty and Parramatta systems, successfully coaching the Bundy Cup side to back to back Premierships in 2009/10. Brett certainly has nothing left to prove at that level and is ready to step up to the more challenging second tier. The WDRLFC wish Brett all the best for the coming season. Bundy Cup What a wonderful season for Coach Brett Cook and his team. After looking a forlorn chance of defending their premiership at the half way point of the season, the team came together and went on to win an amazing 12 games in a row, including the Grand Final against arch rivals Bankstown Bulls in a high quality match. The scene of jubilation at the final siren on Grand Final day of this closely knit team makes all the sacrifices and hard work throughout the year worthwhile. In this regard special mention must go to Karl Filiga who, during the finals series, lost his brother after a long illness but returned from New Zealand to play a strong role in the Grand Final victory. It is difficult to single out any individual players in what has been a total team effort. The talent available, both the young and the more experienced, will serve Wenty proudly and successfully for many years to come. Many of this year’s Bundy side are undoubtedly destined for NSW Cup next season and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that NRL appearances are on the cards. Brett Sargent who captained the team and Jake Byrne who has never played better, have again announced their retirements. Award winners for the season were: Best Back - Dylan Gilbert Best Forward - Mitchell Stanfield Coaches Award - Peter Prime Best and Fairest - Valu Nasio. Congratulations to Dave Nugent and his team for being the inaugural Sydney Shield winners. The Sydney Shield proved to be a strong competition and allowed portability with the Bundy Cup but unfortunately will not be a part of the NSWRL plans for next season. Events The WDRLFC presentation night was held on October 12 with a good crowd in attendance. Several VIPs including Nathan Rees MP, Roy Spagnolo and the majority of his Parramatta NRL Board, Wenty Leagues Club Board and our loyal Sponsors all enjoyed a wonderful meal. A great night was had by all. Perpetual trophy winners were: Rookie of the Year - Dylan Gilbert Ray Stellar Award - Peter Prime Clubman of the Year - Brett McKenna Adam Cromack, as well as doing a great job as the M.C. on the night, was presented with his Life Membership jacket. “International” Rugby League came to Ringrose Park on October 12 when a Bundy Cup representative side, coached by Brett Cook and consisting of five Wenty players (Brett Sargent, Brad Lupi, Keresome Sione, Aaron Fluke and Valu Nasio), played a Fiji Bati side (with one Wenty Bundy player - Henry Raiwalui). A good crowd saw

the Bundy side prevail 30- 28 in a close match. An under 20s game saw the Cook Islands narrowly defeat Fiji in a match that created a lot of atmosphere. Overall it was a successful 2010 season and it has all just started again with training which commenced on November 15. Ron Bottle - Secretary

CRICKET With our season a third of the way through we have a few teams performing well, in particular our under 12/1 and under 15/1 are undefeated, as well as the under11/2 who are currently in second place. There have been some fine individual performances in the early stage of the season. Tony El Kadi - 152* Perry Mehta - 115 Mark Ralph - 100 Kartikey Trivedi - 8/69 Michael Bradley - 6/50 On Saturday night October 30 following the A Grade between Wenty Leagues and Seven Hills, the Under 12/1 teams from both clubs took to the field under lights in a T20 game. The boys used white ball and donned coloured shirts. A great night was had by all in attendance and the boys from both teams really enjoyed the experience of night cricket, not to mention the support from the Seniors in attendance. For the record, Wenty Leagues won the game. We hope to have more of these games during the season Yours in cricket, Aaron Martin – Secretary

NETBALL Following on from the last Journal, the committee is proud to announce we had two premiership teams this season. The winning teams were the Under 12’s and B2’s, both teams coached by Debbie Pietzrak. Congratulations to all players, coach Debbie, managers and parents for an outstanding effort. A special mention also goes to Rebecca Corbet from the B2 team. As our grand final weekend was rained out and re-scheduled for the following week, a lot of players had prior commitments so they had to make some changes. Rebecca was in Queensland fulfilling work commitments, however her very generous boss flew her back to Sydney on the Saturday so she could participate in her Grand Final. The B2 team are very grateful Rebecca has a great boss. Thanks again to Ken and Tracy Darke for supporting the netball on Grand Final day and arranging for Macca the Magpie to come along

Seven players from Wenty Leagues have been selected to represent Zone 10 in this competition, namely Shaun Nelson, Shaun Johns, Tony Stokes, Chris Couchman, Steve Morris, Craig Maythers and Greg Stuart. TABLE TENNIS The Winter Competition of Table Tennis Western Sydney is nearing completion. Wenty Leagues are well placed in C grade, with our teams sitting in 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the time of writing. Our D grade team was leading their competition, while the A and B grade teams required an element of luck to participate in their semi finals. Some great results for individual players representing Wentworthville in the TTWS closed championships. In C grade, Nader Ammara was the winner and Joe Khachan was the runner up. Michael Wang made the semi final of the championship. In D grade, the winner was Jerry You with the runner up Gavin Bland. Well done to these five players for your continued support of our teams in the TTWS competitions. In results from the Commonwealth games, Vivian Tan made the bronze medal match, unfortunately losing to a local Indian team. In the singles competition she made the last eight before losing to the eventual silver medallist. These results meant Vivian was the best performing player representing Australia in Table Tennis at Delhi. Our Monday evening handicap competition is open to all comers regardless of your level of experience. It is a great starting point for newcomers looking for a game of table tennis in the area. We will continue to hold the competition throughout the coming months with new players particularly welcome. Come and join us! Registration is from 7pm - Competition commences at 7.45pm. For the more serious competitor why not join us on Friday evening for our training session to improve your skills against players of your own level and challenge yourself against all comers. FISHING CLUB 18 September 2010 The weather was good and our skipper decided we should fish deep as it was reported that the

leatherjackets were on the chew (65 fathom mark). We had ten fisho’s catching leatherjackets as soon as the bait hit the water. The days total catch was 103 leatherjackets and 3 morwong. The biggest bag went to D. Prestipino with 12.1kgs, with a total of 133.1 points. The biggest fish went to A. Debattista with a morwong weighing 1.03kgs (cleaned). 17 October 2010 This was the day after the big blow and we were hesitant to even attempt fishing, however the weather report was for strong winds in the morning and gradually easing .The skipper from Kiama Charters rang through and advised us to start 1 hour later. We did so and for once the weather forecast was spot on. We fished in close and gradually headed for deeper waters as the weather improved. The total catch for the day was 20 leatherjackets, 3 flatheads and 25 morwong. The biggest bag went to A Debattista with 9.96kgs and a total of 93.52 points. The biggest fish went to V Tran with a sergeant baker weighing 1.61kgs (cleaned). 25/26 September 2010 - Small Boats

Small Boats was held at Greenwell Point with a good time had by all, however there was one disappointing fact. The fisho’s got up early on Saturday morning and got the boats. We went about one and a half hours out which is a long way, rigged up our lines and discovered somebody had forgotten to bring the BAIT! I will not mention his name (A Harvey) but he was far from popular. We tried again on Sunday and were rewarded with a good catch of flatheads with B Mortel catching a 1.6kgs flathead.

INDOOR BOWLS Indoor bowls is played very similarly to lawn bowls. Both variations provide the same enjoyment and the same attractions, which is why there are a lot of lawn bowlers at Wenty who also play indoor bowls. The main advantage of indoor bowls however and also the reason the game was created, is that it remains unaffected by rain, wind, heat and other surprises the weather may bring.

Netball Club President: Judy Paton Secretary: Jody Manson 0414 320 525 Quinlan Shield President: Ken Darke Secretary: Doreen Anderson 9689 2179 Wenty Wheelkings Secretary: Michael King 0414 766 271 WDRLFC (NSW & Bundy Red Cups) President: Jason Grant Secretary: Ron Bottle 0438 445 329

Indoor bowls is played on a roll-out carpet mat surface which provides a much smaller playing length and width than regular lawn bowls. The indoor bowlers also use smaller sized bowls than those used in lawn bowls. If you have played lawn bowls before then you should be able to pick-up indoor bowls quite quickly. However, if you have never played any type of bowls and indoor bowls sounds like something you are interested in, there are always friendly helpers available to lend a hand and get all beginners under way.

WUJRLFC (Junior Rugby League) President: Sam Gambin Secretary: Allan McGowan 0419 266 591

Wenty’s Indoor Bowls Club is currently looking for some extra social players on Thursday nights from 7.30pm-10.30pm. Or, if you are interested in playing more seriously, there is also the option of competition indoor bowls which is mostly played on weekends.

Squash Club President: Elwyn Griffiths Secretary: Rob Spooner 0434 000 656

The indoor bowlers are a very friendly bunch who are welcoming Wenty Leagues members to join in the fun! If you are interested in playing, please call the Indoor Bowls Club’s Secretary, Patricia Gargan on 9681 4242.
