CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

Dear Members,

Thank you to all of the Members that attended the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 16 May. At the AGM I was able to share with Members the excellent trading result that your Club has experienced in the past year.

The Club has been alive over the past couple of months and we have been able to post some excellent results.

In 2009 our revenue grew by more than $1.5 million while operating expenses have decreased. This improved trading result has continued into 2010 and to April our year-todate revenue for the Leagues Club has increased by $1.4 million over the same period in 2009. This is an exceptional result, all the more impressive when you consider the negative impact that the global financial crisis has had on many of our competitors and other industries. Ian McCann

On 16 May the Tingha Club ceased trading and after a small amount of remediation work the building will be shortly handed back to its owners. We have also begun the process for selling our property located in Parkes Street Parramatta and this impending sale will close the chapter on our involvement in Parramatta. As I outlined to Members at the AGM, the decision to exit Parramatta has resulted in a number of one-off write downs which have had a negative effect on our 2009 trading result. Despite this, our overall experience with Parramatta has ultimately been very positive for the Club. When cash flow generated from Parramatta and the transfer value of poker machine entitlements have been factored in, the Parramatta experience has provided almost $2.5 million to the business. On 10 July there will be a 98th Year Reunion for Wentworthville rugby league players and officials in The Starlight Room. If you’ve ever pulled on our famous black and white jersey then I encourage you to join us on the night. Further details can be found on page 24. Until next time. Ian McCann President

Our membership numbers have continued to grow and we have now exceeded 31,000 members. No doubt a number of you have been encouraged to Dave Brace join by the thought of driving away on 6 June in a brand new Toyota RAV4 valued at over $40,000. This phenomenal prize has generated a huge amount of interest and if you have an entry in the barrel make sure you are in the Club when it’s drawn as you would hate to miss out on such a fantastic prize if your name comes out. Wenty’s reputation as a live entertainment venue continues to grow and the lineup in the next few months is superb, with something on offer to suit almost everyone. Headline acts include the legendary John Paul Young, jazz maestro James Morrison, The Radiators and more. We’ve gone Italian. Why don’t you come in and check out Lucido. You can enjoy a four course experience or grab a quick pasta or pizza. Come in on Wednesday or Thursday Night and share a pizza with your mates or family. You’ll love the great table service with drinks at normal club prices. By the time you read this the Tingha Club will be closed. I welcome any members that frequented Tingha back to Smith Street. You’ll see all the staff back here and I hope you continue with your support and membership. I look forward to seeing you around the club. Dave Brace Chief Executive Officer

Community

In the Community Ronald McDonald House thanks Wenty staff Members of the Wenty Leagues’ catering department were recently presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Ronald McDonald House in recognition of their cooking efforts for guests at the House. The Ronald McDonald House is a ‘home away from home’ for families from country and regional areas whose children are being treated at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. To give the families some much needed respite Wenty’s chefs volunteered their time, skills and ingredients to cook up a two course feast for the families staying at the House. Both the chefs and the residents enjoyed the experience so much that they’ve already set a date for the next dinner.

Responsible Service of

Responsible Service of Alcohol

These measures include:

In recent years you will have noticed an increasing focus on alcohol related violence. The government’s major priority in dealing with alcohol related violence has been to concentrate on licensed venues. This has led to the introduction of a scheme to regulate licensed premises with high levels of alcohol-related assaults and other violent incidents. The scheme classifies venues as either Level 1, 2 or 3, depending on the number of incidents they have recorded in the past twelve months.

• 2.00am lockout of non-members (Members can still enter after 2.00am).

Wenty was classified at the lowest level, Level 3 with 8 incidents. Under the scheme venues classified as either Level 1 or 2 have a number of additional licence conditions placed upon them, all of which are designed to reduce the number of alcohol related incidents. Wenty Leagues is one of the largest licenced venues in NSW with almost 1 million visits annually. Despite such a large volume of patronage we are proud that we have relatively few incidents and, whilst we have not had any conditions imposed on our license, we fully support and endorse any sensible suggestions designed to curb the level of alcohol related violence. As such we have chosen to adopt a number of Level 1 conditions on a voluntary basis.

• Cessation of alcohol service 30 minutes prior to close.

• Active distribution of water on the hour, every hour after midnight on Friday and Saturday and at high risk times. • That no new members be signed up after 12.00 midnight. • That no members can sign in guests after 2.00am. This is in addition to existing voluntary measures that Wenty already instigates including: • No shots or doubles (spirits) will be served after 11.00pm of each trading day. • All drinks will be served in plastic or safety-glass drinkware after 11:30pm on Friday / Saturday evenings and at high risk times. • A ‘two alcoholic drink limit’ will be applied to all customers after midnight for each trading day. These voluntary measures prove that Wenty is serious about controlling alcohol related issues. These steps will go a long way as we continue to work closely with the Police, Government and our Members to ensure that we are proactive when it comes to the responsible service of alcohol.

Lucido Vespa Draw To coincide with the launch of our new Lucido Italian Restaurant in February, diners were given a chance to win their own piece of Italy, an iconic Vespa Scooter. Congratulations to Carmelo Duardo who was the lucky winner of the Vespa which was drawn in April. Mr Duardo took home a S50 model Vespa Scooter valued at more than $5,000.

Sub Clubs

Sub Clubs DISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUE After completion of Round 8 of the NSW Cup, Brett Kenny’s team has had a mixed bag of results. After winning their first 2 games they then lost two on the trot before another win. At the time of writing, they had 4 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw which placed them in 6th position. Brett Kenny can be heartened that the team is starting to look stronger and play more consistent football and are getting better with each game. The Bundy Cup has just completed Round 6 of their competition at the time of writing. Similarly, they have had mixed results with 3 wins and 3 losses which placed the side in 5th position. Coach Brett Cook has had a difficult and ongoing task trying to settle on a combination due to the amount of players vying for positions. In the two most recent games the side has had encouraging results with big wins giving indications that the team is starting to come together and will ultimately put up a strong defence of the title won last year. Upcoming events: WDRLFC and the Wentworthville United Junior Rugby League Football Clubs are arranging a 98th Year Reunion of past and present players and officials on 10th July 2010 in the Starlight Room at the Club commencing at 6pm. With many special guests invited it is expected to be a popular occasion and a warm up for the 100 year reunion in 2 years time. Persons wishing to attend should contact either of the two Football Clubs to register. We are also looking for photos and memorabilia that will assist in recording and preserving the proud history of the Wentworthville Club. Following the huge success of the Family Fun Day last year, the WDRLFC in conjunction with the Leagues Club has lined up Sunday, 8 August for this season’s event. So dad, bring your family and kids and let them have an enjoyable day on the rides while you watch two great games of Rugby League. Ron Bottle – Secretary

FISHING 13 March The weather was good so we ventured out wide to the 65 fathoms mark of Kiama. We had plenty of tangles but this was not an issue for Rodney the skipper (Kiama Charters). He made impossible tangles look easy. There were 70 leather jackets, 4 morwong and 1 snapper caught on the day. The biggest bag of the day was caught by A Zammit with 91.08 points (8.28kgs). The biggest fish of the day was a 1.24kg Morwong, caught by M Veselic. Total fish caught for the day was 43.37kgs worth. 18 April We trawled from the Kiama heads and were into the Bonito as soon as the lures hit the water. We caught 13 and had a good supply of fresh bait. We fished the 42 fathom mark with a mixed bag of reef fish and the ever reliable leather jackets. There were 10 morwong, 13 sweep, 2 snapper, 9 sergeant bakers and last but not least, 91 leather jackets caught. The biggest bag of the day was caught by A DeBattista 127.02 points (13.47kgs). The biggest fish of the day was caught by J Romchek with a 1.25kg sergeant baker. Total fish caught for the day was 66.82kgs worth. Note: Stan our Fishing club President wants me to add that he lost the biggest morwong for the day, plus the biggest fish as it straightened his hook. We would all like to believe him! ‘Til Next Tide Alf DeBattista – Publicity Officer

LINE DANCING There is no better time to get organised and onto the line dance floor. Our new beginners 8 week term starts on August 1. Stay active this Winter and avoid putting on that ‘winter coat’. No partner or experience is needed and it is easy to make friends in our fun, informal lessons. Line Dancing is great for the mind, body and the spirit.

Many of our dancers have just returned from a fantastic European holiday. Most of the time was spent in the Mediterranean region however dancers took advantage of sightseeing other areas while they were there. We thank Josh, the line dance instructor who filled in while Julie was overseas. This June we will be off to dance with our country cousins in Sussex Inlet. Also in June, we have been invited to share some of our routines with the Pioneers Centre in Guildford. This is a day centre for people with disabilities. Having completed a very successful trial there earlier this year, we have been invited back for a 5 week term. July will see us encouraging those who started the beginners term on the May 18. It is very fun! Call Julie 9850 0584 for more information Julie Talbot

CRICKET The season has finished Wenty securing two premiership victories. The U/15 div2 A side won their Grand Final comfortably while the U/14 div1 side scored a hard fought victory by only a couple of runs. This was their second consecutive premiership. Well done to all the boys and coaches involved. Unfortunately our U/13 div1 side went down gallantly in a tough game but showed excellent spirit and sportsmanship during their final -Next year boys. Well done. Sadly none of our senior teams made the big one with B9 and B10 going down in the semi-finals. On Sunday, 1 May we held our Junior Presentation in The Starlight Room. The highlight of the day was the presence of Australian Representative Doug Bollinger who presented awards, answered questions from the audience, signed countless autographs and posed for many photos with the boys. This was a surprise for the boys who really appreciated Doug’s efforts. Thanks Doug. Our Senior Presentation will be held on Sunday, 30 May also in The Starlight Room. The guest speaker for this event will be Kerry O’Keefe. It promises to be a highlight for all involved. Aaron Martin – Secretary

Sub Clubs

Sub Clubs continued SNOOKER I start this month’s report on a sad note as Neal Aspinall, a former president and life member of the snooker and billiards club, passed away recently and was a good friend of a lot of members of the club. The current snooker and billiards committee would like to thank Neal for helping us set-up the sub club to where we are today. Our inter-club competitions have started with both teams doing quite well so far. On June 20 at 10.30am we will be holding our annual snooker-darts challenge. If you would like to know about this event, you can contact either myself (Grant Pulley - 0421 955 107) or Ian Merry from the darts club (0410 507 165). Winners were Gloria Young, Clare Woodley and Robert Jones. June 20 will be the date for the mixed drawn pairs. Our bus trip is coming up

Why not join us on Monday evenings for our handicap competition which is open to all comers regardless of your level of experience. We have revamped the format to encourage players who have not only participated in the past but as always we are seeking to grow our sport within the club with new players particularly welcome. Registration from 7 pm - Competition commences at 7.45 pm.
