President’s and CEO’s Reports President’s Report Dear Members, On 12 March Wentworthville Leagues Club celebrated the 49th Anniversary of the Club opening for trade on 12 March 1962. While the passing of our 49th Anniversary was not necessarily cause for great celebration, this time next year we will be celebrating 50 years since our great Club first opened its doors and this milestone certainly is going to be Ian McCann celebrated with great enthusiasm. To mark the 50th Anniversary the Board has commissioned a commemorative publication to document the Club’s first 50 years. The book is well underway and its author, Mike Davis, has been busy conducting interviews and gathering photos for inclusion in the book. If you have anything that you believe would be of interest, I encourage you to contact the Club’s Administration to put you in touch with Mike. As part of the celebrations we are also proposing to recognise a new class of membership. The proposal to introduce a new Fifty Year membership class will be put to members at the upcoming AGM on Sunday 22 May. Fifty years of continuous membership is an extraordinary achievement and on behalf of the Board I would encourage you to attend the AGM and support this resolution. On the building front, we have appointed Kell & Rigby for the redevelopment of our carpark and are presently reviewing submissions for the reception redevelopment and new children’s play area that I outlined in the last Journal. If all goes to plan, builders will have started by the time you read this and finish just before Christmas. If you are interested in learning more about the development staging then I encourage you to attend the AGM where a more comprehensive outline of the project will be provided. On behalf of the Board I wish everyone a Happy Easter and to all of our mums a Happy Mother’s Day. Ian McCann President
CEO’s Report Dear Members, By the time you read this the dust will be settling on the State election. In the lead up to the election, the President, Vice President and I were busy meeting with all of the candidates on both sides of parliament to ensure that the views of our club were taken into consideration in their election promises. Dave Brace
As you would have read in previous Journals the Liberal Party has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with clubs that reduces Poker Machine Tax and agrees to limit legislation so clubs can have some breathing space. One of the best initiatives is increasing personal responsibility so clubs are not blamed for the actions of the few people that act inappropriately. The good news is that we continue to trade well and the first few months of 2011 have seen the club continue to grow. Revenue is up on the same period in 2010 and our membership has now passed 34,000. I look forward to reporting a profit to you for 2010 at this year’s AGM. In March we installed a new till system in the club. The new system we have chosen is world leading technology and will allow us much greater power and flexibility in delivering targeted promotions and offers to you, our members. In April we will launch our latest major promotion with members given an opportunity to win a sensational Holden Commodore SV6. This stunning vehicle is going to look fantastic in one lucky member’s driveway and remember all you have to do to enter is swipe your membership card during the promotional period. Notice of Special Resolutions for the 2011 Annual General Meeting To be held on Sunday 22 May 2011 Notice is hereby given that the following two (2) Special Resolutions are recommended by the Board of Directors: Special Resolution One (1)
1. To consider and if thought fit, pass a Special Resolution to delete Rule 134 and any other reference to the October General Meeting in the Constitution of the Wentworthville Leagues Club Limited. 134 The Club shall during the month of October of each year, hold a General Meeting for the primary purpose to provide an opportunity for members to raise relevant issues from the floor, without prior notice. These issues may take the form of a recommendation for consideration by the Board or a resolution for determination at the Annual General Meeting and thereafter to hear a report from the Board in regard to, the general performance of the Club and to conduct any other Club business on which the relevant notice has been given. The quorum for the October General Meeting shall not be less than fifty (50) members present and entitled to vote. Explanatory Note regarding the first Special Resolution • The quorum that is required is difficult to obtain on this night. • Our Club uses the bi-monthly Journal, e-mails, mail-outs, press releases and our website www.wentyleagues.com.au to keep all members up to date. • Our Board of Directors and Management are always approachable to assist with any questions from members at any time. • Our Club consults with our members on a regular basis and where necessary further meetings can be called at any time when required. • Our Constitution’s level of reporting is adequate without having a compulsory extra General Meeting each year in October. Rules 72, 98(g), 98(i), 98(j) and 99(a) relate to all levels of reporting that the Board of Directors are obligated to adhere to. • The Registered Clubs Act requires that the Board adhere to all disclosures of interests of members of governing bodies, gifts and remuneration from persons and organisations with contracts with registered Clubs. Special Resolution Two (2) 2. To consider and if thought fit, pass a Special Resolution to include an additional Class of Membership, being a “Fifty (50) Year Member”. The new Rule being: 42(c) On and after 11 March 2012, the following additional Class of Membership is entered into the Register of Members being identified as: Fifty (50) Year Member.
Together with an additional rule of explanation that being:
43(c) Fifty (50) Year Member
(i) An Ordinary Member who is in the class of either a Twenty Five (25) Year Member, Standard Member, Concessional Member or Staff Member who has attained fifty (50) years continuous membership with the Club will automatically be transferred to the Fifty (50) Year Member Class except Staff Members in accordance with Rule 43(g)(vi) who will remain classified as a Staff Member.
(ii) A Fifty (50) Year Member shall be relieved from payment of any subscription fee or levies, but shall have all the rights and privileges of a Standard Member.
Explanatory Note regarding the second Special Resolution This Special Resolution is to recognise 50 years continuous membership of Wentworthville Leagues Club. Get to Know Your Board Ian McCann President

Growing up in Leichardt with six brothers, it’s not hard see how sport and particularly rugby league would soon become Ian’s passion. A local junior, at 22 Ian made his 1st Grade debut with Balmain, playing for four years as part of the powerful Tigers team of the early nineties, before moving to Penrith for a year. In 1993 Ian retired from the ARL and the following year joined the Wenty Magpies as a player and Assistant Coach for the club’s Metropolitan Cup side. After a further four seasons of playing for the Magpies, Ian hung up the playing boots to concentrate on coaching the Metro Cup side, a position he enjoyed for the next ten years.
George is a long time Wenty boy having lived at Pendle Hill and Wentworthville since 1951. He joined Wenty Leagues in February 1974, enjoying a few beers with his father on Saturday afternoons.
Trevor joined Wentworthville Leagues Club shortly after it opened in 1962. Working at the Wentworthville Hotel at the time, just a few months later he found himself being invited to work behind the bar at the (then) new club. Trevor was quickly promoted to Dining Room Steward and later to Supervisor, ultimately spending 14 years on the staff.
After retiring from coaching, Ian was elected President of the Wentworthville District Rugby League Football Club in 2007. In the same year he was also awarded Life Membership of the District Football Club. With a strong interest in the running of the Leagues Club, Ian was persuaded to stand for the Board of the Leagues Club to which he was successfully elected in 2007. After seeing how tough the club industry was doing during the period of heavily increased taxes and restrictions on smoking, Ian realised that Wenty would be better served if the board worked with management to develop a strategic plan to address these issues. With concerns that these plans and strategies could only be debated robustly if there were no conflicts of interest, he decided to run for the position of President, for which he was successfully elected in 2009. When he’s not working his day job as Team Leader Waste, Resource Recovery and Fleet at Leichardt Council or solving Leagues Club issues, Ian enjoys having a punt at the Magpie Bar and playing golf. During footy season, Ian is a loyal spectator of the Mighty Magpies. Family time includes spending time with childhood sweetheart, Lisa, whom he met as a 16 year old and married at 22. On weekends they watch their two children play sport with daughter Brooke (17) playing netball and son Jake (14) playing AFL. In 1988, a neighbour talked George into giving lawn bowls a try with Wenty Leagues Bowling Club. George was soon hooked and even has a Minor Singles Tournament to his name. Before long George started helping sell raffle tickets after bowls which led to him becoming involved with the Bowling Club committee. Over the years George has held positions on the General Committee, Tournament Committee, Vice President, Senior President, Secretary and is currently the President of the Men’s Bowling Club. In recognition of George’s service to the Bowling Club he was awarded Life Membership in July 2002. Between 2003 and 2004 George was approached by a number of members and a Director at the time and asked to run for the Board of the Leagues Club. In May 2005, he was elected to the Board where he served for two years and was re-elected in May 2009. George has been married to wife Linda for 39 years and has two children David & Wendy and a granddaughter Charlotte. George’s son David is also a bowler and is a major sponsor of the Bowling Club. George enjoys the occasional show in The Starlight Room, a regular dinner in Lucido Italian Restaurant with Linda (and quite often his entire family) and of course his Saturday afternoons on the bowling greens. Favourite Show at Wenty – Blues Brothers and The Delltones Beverage of choice – A couple of XXXX beers then a scotch and water in a middy glass (most of the bar staff know it as a bucket). NRL team – Parramatta Eels Favourite meal at Wenty – Seafood Platter for One or Porterhouse Steak and Chips with Mushroom Sauce. George also enjoys the occasional take home Lucido Pizza

In 1965, after 9 years of Ju-Jitsu training, Trevor started his own Ju-Jitsu classes for children in Seven Hills. After 2 years in operation, the Wenty Leagues Board agreed to support Trevor’s classes and the Wenty Leagues Ju-Jitsu sub club was formed. Trevor was the President for the first 17 years and 44 years on is still an instructor, holds a 6th Dan black belt and is a Life Member and Patron of the club. In 1999, after prompting from a number of members Trevor ran for and was successfully elected to the Board of the Club, a position he has held ever since. Trevor is married to Marie and together they have 3 daughters, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Trevor became involved with the Wentworthville Junior Rugby League Football Club when one of his grandsons began to play. Trevor trained his grandson’s side for 2 years, was a Director of the Junior Football Club for 2 years and has been volunteering with wife Marie in the canteen for the last 14 years. Trevor has been awarded as a Life Member, Patron and Club Person of the Year (2002) of the Junior Football Club for his extensive commitment over the years. Among Trevor’s many other accolades and awards is an Australian Sports Medal received in 2000, an Order of Australia Medal received in 2004 and he was made a Life Member of Wenty Leagues in 2001. For the past 6 years, Trevor has also been actively swimming with the Wenty Leagues Swimming Club and is co patron of the Swimming Club. In 2009 Trevor was awarded the Unsung Hero Award at the inaugural Wenty Leagues Sub Club Awards. World’s Greatest Shave
In December and January large parts of Queensland were decimated by severe flooding with three quarters of the state declared a natural disaster zone. In typical Wenty fashion many of our sub clubs and members have shown their support by raising money towards the disaster relief fund. Fundraising efforts included the Cricket Club hosting a special fundraising trivia night which raised a mammoth $4,500, the District Football Club collecting $1,000 at their major trial match, a cash donation of $10,000 from Wenty Leagues and $1,400 donated by members through collection boxes placed around the club. Well done to everyone involved.
On 11 March a number of the Wenty Leagues board, management and staff joined in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation. More than $5,000 was raised on the night alone. A huge thankyou to the girls from The Hair Shack who donated their services to perform the hair cutting and colouring duties on the night. Wenty Wheelkings In 2011 Wenty Leagues will celebrate its tenth straight year as the Major Sponsor of the Wenty Wheelkings Wheelchair Basketball Team. The Wheelkings compete in the National Wheelchair Basketball League against teams from throughout Australia and after a rebuilding year in 2010 are set to challenge the dominant Perth Wildcats for the 2011 title.

Sub Clubs DISTRICT FOOTBALL Pre-season training is over, the trials are over and at the time of writing there were only 5 days to go until the commencement of the 2011 season. Both the NSW Cup and Bundy Cup squads have trialled on three occasions and the form line indicates that there is plenty of talent available. This should result in another good season for the Magpies. NSW Cup coach Brett Cook is working closely with Eels NRL coach Stephen Kearney to ensure that both NRL and NSW Cup teams are heading in the same direction which will make for a smooth transition of players between teams if required. Bundy Cup coach Aaron McDonald has a large, strong squad with an influx of new players as well as the majority of last season’s players who have worked hard during the pre-season and were very competitive during the trials. This should give Aaron every opportunity to continue a strong defence of titles won in 2009 and 2010. INDOOR BOWLS Everyone seems to have enjoyed their Christmas break and have settled in to the new year of bowls. We have moved our monthly committee meetings from a Thursday night to a Wednesday afternoon. Our Australia Day celebrations were a great success. We started off the day with a coffee and cake and then settled down to three games of bowls. There were 44 players registered to play on the day and everyone had a great time. We then enjoyed a very nice lunch before concluding the day. Mixed 4’s were played on February 13. The results were as follows: Winners: Ronda May (Lead), June Davis (2nd), Luki Nunner (3rd) & Robert Jones (Skip) Runners Up: Barbara Mulholland (Lead), Fred Portelli (2nd), Aprill McKay (3rd) & Carmen Jones (Skip) At the moment we have a full complement of bowlers for Wednesdays as we only have four mats, but there is still

TABLE TENNIS The Summer Competition of Table Tennis Western Sydney is about to commence soon. A meeting for all captains took place at Blacktown Workers in early March to set a date and rules for the Competition. We will have teams in all grades. Our Monday evening handicap competition is open to everyone regardless of your level of experience. We have revamped the format to encourage players who have not only participated in the past but, as always, we are seeking to grow our sport within the Club with new players welcome. Registration from 7pm - Competition commences at 7.45pm. WOMEN’S BOWLS Our Open 4’s competition ran smoothly, the weather was cooler thank goodness and a lovely lunch was served. Bowling Calendar at the time of writing - Pennants had commenced which provide an opportunity for new and accomplished bowlers to experience competition against other Clubs in the District. FISHING January Fishing Trips Our first trip was on the January 15. We fished out of Kiama. With the weather being good we fished at the 50 Fathom mark for mixed results. The amount of large Sergeant Bakers caught was a boat record (22 Sergeant Bakers, 56 Leather Jackets and 9 Morwong). The biggest bag was caught by A Zammit with 127.5 points, while the biggest fish was caught by M Nash - 1.6kg Sergeant Baker. Our second trip was on the January 30. The weather was not what you call ideal so we fished in close (35 fathom mark) and caught 13 Morwong, 3 Flatheads, 2 Leather Jackets, 3 Wrasse and 1 Gurnard. The biggest bag was caught by B Mortel with 56.24 points and the biggest fish was caught by R Harvey, being a 1.54kg Morwong. February Fishing Trips Our first February trip was on the February 12. The weather was like a washing machine and we could not fish our usual grounds. Our catch for the day was small as we had to cut the trip short with the conditions we encountered. We caught 5 Flatheads, 4 Morwong, 3 Snapper and 5 Sweep. The biggest bag went to A Harvey with 52.77 points, while the biggest fish was caught by D Prestipino. I would like congratulate Stan Gabriel for being re-elected as President of our Fishing Club, M Nash as Secretary, S Cvejic as Treasurer, D Prestipino as Vice President and F Looi, O Spanring, B Mortel and A Debattista as Committee Members. In closing I would like to mention the Passing of Phyliss Watson, wife of Chris Watson (A dedicated Fisho). May our Prayers help Chris in his time of Mourning. NETBALL Following a number of meetings with Blacktown City Netball Association (BCNA), showing their great organisational skills and prompt decision making process, the committee is confident this year will be a very successful year for the netball club in its 44th year. Our first season at BCNA kicks off on April 2 with all players and committee members looking forward to a fresh new start. Moving into the new association will be a different approach for all our volunteer committee members, coaches, umpires and managers which the executive committee appreciates during the transition period. At this stage we have 9 senior teams (2 more than last year), with a minimum 9 players per team. Also, so far we have 6 Junior Teams (ages 8-13) and a Nursery team (aged 4-6) doing ½hour training only. We are currently looking for more 8-13 year olds interested in playing netball. We play every week and you can check out the Leagues Club website if you would like to view a full fixtures list. Our cock-of-the-walk final was played with Charlie Bannerman defeating Mark O’Brien in a close contest. We then contested our club championships with the results as follows: A Grade – Winner Charlie Bannerman, Runner Up Same Mawad B Grade – Winner Paul Waghorne, Runner Up Frank Martin C Grade – Winner Troy Tyson, Runner Up Arthur Stephens In A Grade, Charlie came from 11 shots behind in the final round at Glenmore by shooting a great par round to overtake and beat Sam who faltered just like his football team (Go Manly), while B Grade winner Paul, led all the way. C Grade Troy (I’m on a diet again) proved he was more consistent than his football team (Parra) and he also said he would lose 40 kilos by the end of the year – I’ll keep you informed. Ham & Chook day has been played and there were many winners including Troy, who won a full Ham and was heard to say ‘I’ll start the diet in 2012’. Another popular winner on this day was Jow (Keno) Cannon. We have also played our Captain vs President day. In the previous Journal I said the President’s team would show the Captain’s side how to play golf and this was proven correct, with the President’s side winning easily. In the final of Double Matchplay, Mark Weyman and Ray Reihana won a tight game over the father and son team of Mark and Jake O’Brien. SWIMMING Our season came to an end on March 27 following our championships which began in early March. We still have our Presentation Night and Annual General Meeting coming up however. Results will be in the June/July Journal. On February 13 we hosted the Western Metropolitan Carnival in which Wenty were very successful. Results were as follows: 80 years and over - 1st Sylvia Lee. 70 years and over 3rd Ron Whitmore. 60 years and over - 1st Brian Norris. 100m handicap - 2nd Howard Ambler. Service Relay – 1st Wenty. 30m handicap - 1st Graeme Hay, 2nd Brad Cohen, 3rd Sean Henly. 10x50m handicap relay - 5th place Wenty. Charles Higgins Trophy - 2nd place Wenty. Overall point score won by Wenty Leagues. Sealed handicap - David Finch. Sealed Handicap 30m -Tom Lamont. Afterwards we then went to Seven Hills RSL for an enjoyable lunch and presentation. We also attended a swim at Bondi Icebergs Sunday 27 February. We swam against Bondi Junction/Waverley, Bondi Diggers, Maroubra Diggers, Bronte, North Bondi and Coogee Diggers with an enjoyable luncheon and presentation to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Bondi. DARTS The Wenty Darts Club has just started our competition season again with three men’s teams on Mondays, two ladies teams on Tuesdays and four mixed teams on Wednesdays. In January we held our Summer Break Competition with a great attendance of 8 teams. The winning team included Chris Whitting, Tony Zumbo, Cameron Williams, Terrieanne Hughes & Brian Greenaway. The runners up were Stuart Jackson, John Rook, Paul Trethewey & Ruth Gotts. The state sixes is on over the Easter weekend, April 22-25.

MENS BOWLS Club Championships update: The Fours has been completed - D Judge, A Ashton, Gary Reynolds & U Bendt (18) defeated J Stephenson, T Stokes, S Nelson and C Maythers (17). The scores were level after 21 ends and an extra end was played to determine the winner. Minor Singles and Major Singles have commenced and the draws are posted on the notice board. Pennant Trials have been completed and the State Pennant Season commenced on Saturday 12 March. The club has entered six sides and hopefully we will be competitive in all our grades. Our first tournament will be played on Friday 8 April. The event is for players graded 4 to 7 and is sponsored by Terry Shields Toyota (Parramatta). The Annual Penguin Pairs will be played on May 29. The tournament is for members of our bowling club and is sponsored by BP Wentworthville. Seven of our members played for Zone 10 in the Annual Allan Buckley Shield challenge against Zone 9 on the 6th March. C Maythers and C Couchman played in the A-Side, A Williamson, S Nelson and G Stuart in the B-Side, while Gary Reynolds and D Harmer played in the Seniors-Side. Overall Zone 9 scored 242 shots to Zone 10’s 236 shots. Mid-Week Triples commence on Wednesday 20 April and we look forward to entering teams in this competition. Sub Clubs
Sub Clubs continued they feel ready. Social dance sessions are available on the second Friday of each month where dancers are encouraged to attend and made feel extremely welcome. The biggest event on the linedance calendar this year is the Ronald McDonald Ball held on the April 2. The dancers expect they will raise well in excess of $25,000 for Westmead’s Ronald McDonald House. Hot on the heels of the senior’s week celebrations where many of our ‘senior’ dancers entertained their peers, is the Linedance & History Retreat to Bathurst. We will be staying at a real Aussie ‘Castle’ - Abercrombie House on April 16/17. This is open to all who wish to experience a piece of living history. Our May 13, social dance night will be a continuation of Mothers Day celebrations. A Mothers Day theme is encouraged and a shower of bubbles on arrival is sure to get the night off to a good start. GOSHIN JU-JITSU If you would like to join us, you are most welcome to. Come and talk to the instructors or a committee member and then either sit and watch the students training or join them on the mat. Being a member of Wenty Leagues automatically makes you eligible to play in the Wenty Leagues Squash Club, with players of all ages welcome. The Squash Club currently has five members over 65 playing in their Competitions and at the other end of the scale, the Squash Club offers sponsorship for juniors aged 15 to 18. With grades from division 18 (beginners) up to State level, there is a competition to suit everyone. The Wenty Leagues Squash Club participates in a Spring and Autumn competition which run for 17 weeks each. The competitions are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to around 10.30pm with all home matches played at the Coolibah Fitness Centre, Merrylands West. To participate in these competitions the cost is $85 per person. During the breaks of these Competitions, the Squash Club also hold their Annual Club Championships and a Handicap event. If you are interested in joining the Squash Club, contact the Squash Club Secretary - Rob Spooner on 0434 000 656. Alternatively, simply visit the Coolibah Fitness Centre any Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7.30pm to witness the various levels of Squash played. If you want to have a hit yourself without becoming involved with the Squash Club, all Wenty Club members can head to the Coolibah Fitness Centre and play for just $5, depending on court availability (valid on weekdays up to 5pm and all weekend).
