Let's Build a Home for Chabad at Drexel

THE FUTURE HAS BEGUN Join us to Build a Lasting Home for Jewish Life at Drexel

OUR STORY In September of 2010, Drexel Chabad was but a dream. The Jewish students at Drexel were feeling the void of not having a Chabad House on campus, and longed for a place where they could come to celebrate, learn, hang out, and connect with Judaism and fellow Jewish Dragons. Within a couple months, at their request, Rabbi Chaim and Moussia Goldstein started offering Torah classes and only a few months later, moved to Philadelphia to establish a permanent Chabad presence at Drexel University.

Thanks to the vision of our generous donors, a handful of students quickly grew into a torrent of eager participants. Once fanned, the flame of Jewish passion at Drexel spread to hundreds of young hearts and minds of all backgrounds. For 10 years, together with our donors, we’ve been planting the seeds of an incredible community of students, alumni, parents, and friends, and we are proud to say that Chabad has become the heart of Jewish student life on campus. Having outgrown our first two locations, the time has come for a fully realized dream Chabad House at Drexel to become a reality.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME FOR JEWISH DRAGONS

When Jessica Gihon came to Drexel, she was hesitant about coming to Chabad.. “...I started going to Chabad with the new friends I had made and over the years created the most amazing network of Jewish friends who I now call my family. Over the last 5 years I have attended countless Shabbat Dinners, Shabbat day lunches, participated in Sinai Scholars, served on the board, attended a Shabbaton... the list goes on and on. I bonded with the Drexel Chabad family as if they were my own. I would play with the kids, help out around the house, come to hang out and have some tea, and I even brought Jewish boys over to get Moussia’s approval! I always had home-cooked food to eat and a place to go.” One of our young alumni, Dean Blank, shares the following: “Chabad has played a significant role in my academic success at Drexel. I always struggled to find balance in my academic life; I would rarely take breaks from school or work, which hurt my well-being. Fortunately, Chabad has always been there for me as a place to take a break and reconnect with my Judaism. Attending Shabbat and other events weekly, I was able to find the balance I needed to live a happy student life. Ultimately, the Jewish values I learned at Chabad prepared me for life after college”.

A DREAM COME TRUE With G-d’s help, and thanks to generous donors, we have purchased a rare stand-alone home in Powelton Village, which is located right next door to our existing Chabad house. It’s location in the only residential neighborhood adjacent to Drexel makes it ideal for students to retreat off campus to the warmth, comfort, and familiarity of a Jewish home. The large square footage will allow us to create an oasis for Jewish students - a home away from homegiving them the opportunity to get away from the stresses of school and co-op. Plans call for a state-of-the-art kitchen and a large dining room that open up onto a magnificent garden terrace. A kosher cafe will cater to kosher needs of students, while the sanctuary and student lounge and workspaces serve as other essential features of our home for Jewish life at Drexel. With a growing Jewish population, Drexel is uniquely-placed for a cultural and religious center of this magnitude. We need your help to bring this dream to life!

IN DEDICATION TO THE REBBE The Rebbe’s love for every Jew was legendary, and his passionate belief in the infinite potential of each individual was deeply inspiring. Our mission is rooted in his teachings, which include the idea of building the Jewish people through education, caring, inclusion, and shaping the next generation of engaged leadership within the Jewish community.

We look forward to welcoming you at Chabad!
