JAPAN FOR ALL SEASONS Japan is a country that can be enjoyed year round; here is our guide to what is happening when, to help you decide what time of year you’d like to experience it.

CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON The Japanese have been romanced by cherry blossoms for centuries, and even created a word to symbolise heading outdoors to appreciate them – ‘hanami’ which literally translates as ‘looking at flowers’. When you gaze on the sea of soft pink flowers, it’s easy to see why both the Japanese and international visitors are so enamoured. Starting in late January in the sub-tropical south, the blossoms sweep up the country, reaching Tokyo and Kyoto in approximately the first week of April, though this can vary due to the preceding weather. In the two weeks after they first bloom, locals and visitors alike stroll, sit and picnic beneath the laden boughs. They are particularly stunning when lit-up by lanterns at twilight. Cherry blossom season is extremely popular and our tours often sell out over a year in advance. If you want to travel during this period, make sure you book early!

BLOOMING GUIDE: Look for the cherry blossom symbol for departures that fall during the anticipated cherry blossom seasons in 2018-19 (subject to local conditions).

JAPAN TRAVEL FOR ALL INSURANCE SEASONS

AUTUMN LEAVES Japan’s deep and rich autumn colours travel the opposite way to the cherry blossom, starting in the very north in September and travelling south, reaching their peak in Tokyo, Kyoto and the surrounding areas from mid-November to early December. In the parks and temple gardens of the cities, the leaves of the multitude of maple and gingko trees turn vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange; if you are travelling into the Japanese Alps, you’re in for an even more spectacular sight.

BLOOMING GUIDE: Look for the autumn leaves symbol for departures that fall during the anticipated autumn leaves seasons in 2018-19 (subject to local conditions).

SUN AND SNOW Japan’s summer, June to August, may be hot and humid but it is the season for festivals and fireworks. Enjoy impromptu celebrations or escape to the mountains to find the cooler climes and maybe do some hiking – this is also the only time of year that you are able to climb Mt Fuji. In the winter, outside the cities, the country becomes a snow-covered wonderland. Vibrant ski resorts spring into action, ice festivals take place (Sapporo’s is the world’s biggest) and the Japanese Macaques earn their Snow Monkey moniker. Oh, and there is nothing better than the glorious warm waters of an onsen on a cold winter’s day!

YOUR TOUR GUIDES

Takako

Being a tour guide is so much fun! No matter how many times I visit Kyoto I always discover new things – especially when with people who can offer a different perspective. I like to make sure my group get to experience our culture as much as possible, because travel isn’t just about the things that you see, it’s also about the things that you do.

Michiko

Mr Mcintosh, Discover Japan

I am very experienced at leading tour groups and I am always ready to welcome the next group to my country. One of the best things about my job is getting to meet lots of people from other countries, and I know that they enjoy spending time learning about my country – it’s a great cultural exchange!

"Our tour guide Takako Kaneko made the holiday. She was excellent, informative, hardworking and had obviously researched information for us."

I always treat my tour groups like one big family, making sure that everyone is happy and healthy throughout our time together. I am very passionate about Japanese history – to me it is completely fascinating. If anyone is interested in learning about Samurai or the Meiji Restoration, you’ll just have to come to Japan and ask me!

Yoko

Mr Locke, Discover Japan "We cannot praise our guide Michiko enough. She was tireless in her efforts to make it an enjoyable and informative trip for everybody. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Her range of knowledge and general tour guide skills were outstanding, and she had a charming personality.”

Mr Degville, Jewels of Japan "A special thank you to Yoko our tour guide, whose friendly, professional and organised approach to the tour made sure everything ran smoothly and made the trip to Japan so memorable. Well done Yoko!!"

I love sharing the culture of my country with visitors, that’s why I became a tour guide! Getting to introduce people to things that are unique to Japan, from noodles and sake to classical gardens and temples is something that I truly enjoy – learning about our culture is a sure way to understand more about Japan as a whole.

Mrs Brownridge, Jewels of Japan "Our guide Michiyo “made” this tour with her charm, knowledge and lots of interesting details and her sense of humour. "

TRAVELLERS’ TALES We love to hear from our customers. Your comments and feedback help to maintain and improve our high standards. We also love to hear your travel stories and discover your holiday highlights.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES:

The tour was fantastic, probably one of the best tours I have done so far. All the activities and hotels were great, and we had the full 100% cherry blossoms in Kyoto and Himeji Castle.

Esther, Jewels of Japan, April 2017

The programme was varied and covered a lot of the ‘Jewels of Japan’. As a train enthusiast, the bullet train excursions were a highlight and the variety of restaurants and food gave a taste of the real Japan. Recommended!

Paul, Jewels of Japan, May 2017

We loved all of the cultural activities, particularly the drumming and kimono dress up, and spending the night at the monastery at Koyasan with morning chanting with the monks was such an honour.

Mr and Mrs Hawkins, Trails of Japan, May 2017

As all meals and entry to various sights are included in the price, you know from the word go how much the holiday is going to cost. It was great to sit back and enjoy our tour with no added worries!

The quality and variety of food was excellent. We visited some very interesting places. Our Japanese guide Tarako Kaneko was excellent.

TRAVELLERS' FEEDBACK

THE EXPERTS FAVOURITES The further we explore Asia, the more we fall in love with the culture, food and people. We live and breathe Asia every day. Let us share our passion for this unmatched region with you.

KYOTO WAS A DEFINITE HIGHLIGHT! “Japan exceeded all of my expectations and I had so much fun that it is now one of my favourite destinations! I must admit I was a little afraid I would be living on a diet of sashimi, but the food was amazing – so fresh and so much variety! Kyoto was a definite highlight and I recommend doing a bike tour here. The people were super friendly and there is so much to do that I will definitely be returning.” Rebecca Kitlinska, Operations Supervisor

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED TOKYO! “From the moment we stepped off the plane, the thrill of negotiating our way to the famous Shibuya crossing was mind blowing. The buzz of the city and buildings lit up all around us was the perfect way to start our Tokyo adventures.” Tamara Brown, Business Services Executive

IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO JAPAN...PLAN IT NOW! “When thinking of my time in Japan, I recall the cherry blossoms, bullet train, computer gadgets and eating sushi. Not to forget the people; Japanese people are very friendly, helpful and polite. The cities are very clean and getting around is easy. My favourite cities are Tokyo and Osaka with plenty of things to see, do and eat. I went to Japan during the cherry blossom season and it is exciting to see the beautiful unique flowers.” Julie Ton, Visa Consultant

SEOUL IS EASILY ONE OF MY MOST FAVOURITE PLACES IN ASIA!

IT IS AN INCREDIBLE COUNTRY

“I really loved Seoul. It had this amazing mix of old culture, while being a modern city that was surprisingly easy to get around. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and really made you feel at home. I particularly loved the Gyongbokgung Palace, which was full of ancient Korean history.”

“Japan is easily one of my favourite places. The culture is fascinating, and a traditional tea ceremony is a must-do, as is sampling the local dishes, such as okonomiyaki in Hiroshima. Kyoto is the place to go to see traditional temples which are absolutely stunning in autumn!”

ITINERARY DAYS 1-2: FLY TO TOKYO Fly overnight to the vibrant, neonbright metropolis of Tokyo, Japan’s capital city. Depending on your time of arrival the rest of the day is yours to start soaking up the local culture. DAY 3: EXPLORE TOKYO Tokyo is a city that is always moving forward – from the everchanging skyline to the fashions and trends of the people who call it home. As modern as it may appear, behind the neon façade is a traditional soul that is easy to find amongst the old alleyways, temples and shrines of the Edo era. Today, you will experience both sides of the city, ascending the soaring Tokyo Skytree, the world’s tallest tower, for panoramic views, before taking a wander through the old districts of Asakusa and Nakamise. Stop to soak up the atmosphere at Senso-ji, Tokyo’s most famous and beloved temple and browse the stalls of Nakamise shopping street. You’ll also visit the Imperial Palace Plaza, where you can admire the ‘Nijubashi’, the two bridges that form the

grand entrance to the palace’s inner sanctum. Later take a stroll through Hamarikyu Gardens. This evening, cruise the waters of Tokyo Bay and enjoy dinner from the perfect vantage point to admire the supercharged lights of the city. DAY 4: MT FUJI Travel by road from Tokyo to Fuji, where you’ll ascend 2,300 metres up Japan’s most iconic sight to the ‘5th Station’ for magnificent views of both Fuji’s cone and the surrounding landscapes. If the road to the 5th Station is closed, you will instead visit the Fuji Visitor Centre. Transfer to the spa region of Hakone by coach. Embark on a cruise on the spectacular Lake Ashi, keeping an eye out for the bright red of vermillion torii gates that nestle on the surrounding alpinesque hills and in the shallows of the lake itself. You may even catch a glimpse of the cone of Mt Fuji peering over the hills, though once you have flown high above the lake of the Komagatake Ropeway to the summit of Mt Komagatake the views of Mt Fuji will be breathtaking but weather dependent of course!

DAY 6: EXPLORE KYOTO This morning visit one of Japan’s most famous temples, Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion. Set amongst classical Japanese Zen gardens and on the edge of a reflecting pool, the temple’s main hall is covered in gold leaf - a breathtaking sight no matter what season you visit in. Continue to Ryoan-ji, a Zen temple that is home to Japan’s most famous Zen garden. You’ll have some time to contemplate its mysteries for yourself. This afternoon, enjoy a taste of authentic Japanese culture, experiencing the elegant ritual of a tea ceremony and learning the traditional art of origami. DAY 7: EXPLORE NARA & OSAKA This morning, depart for Nara. Another former capital, Nara also has a huge cultural legacy, considered second only to Kyoto’s. This picturesque, compact city is endlessly charming, something you’ll notice as you explore. Spend the morning discovering Todai-ji Temple which houses the magnificent Daibutsu, a 15-metretall bronze statue of Buddha. Here you’ll also be able to meet Nara’s famous Sika Deer, believed to be the messengers of the Shinto gods. You’ll also stroll Isui-en, a prime example of a Meiji-era (1868-1912) garden. Continue to Osaka, where you’ll have lunch and explore the Dontonburi district, Osaka’s vibrant foodie and entertainment district. It is

ITINERARY DAYS 1-2: FLY TO TOKYO Fly overnight to Tokyo, Japan’s capital, for a three-night stay. Tokyo was once known as Edo and was a small fishing town. Depending on your time of arrival the rest of the day is yours to soak up the local culture. DAY 3: DISCOVER TOKYO Tokyo is the ultimate 24-hour city, but look behind its frantic, high-tech frontage and you’ll find plenty of tranquil backstreets and old temples to explore. Today’s city tour starts on the observation deck of the 634-metre Skytree, the world’s tallest tower, before seeking out the tranquillity of the ancient Buddhist Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest. Learn about Tokyo’s historical heritage at the Edo-Tokyo Museum or Tokyo National Museum, and explore Tokyo’s Imperial Palace Plaza. DAY 4: MEIJI SHRINE Take a relaxed morning wander around the classical landscapes of the Hamarikyu Garden. Continue to the Meiji Shrine, the Shinto shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of

Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken before passing the famous Shibuya Crossing. The afternoon is free for you to explore as you wish. This evening, take a relaxed dinner cruise on Tokyo Bay. DAY 5: FUJI FIVE LAKES Journey through the foothills of the iconic Mt Fuji to the Fuji Five Lakes. The region is spectacular with the calm waters of the five lakes, formed by past volcanic eruptions. Later, try your hand at making traditional Japanese soba noodles before tucking in to your creations. Continue to Oshino Hakkai, a scenic area of ponds full of crystal clear spring water created by Fuji’s melting snow. DAY 6: MT FUJI Ascend 2,300 metres up to Mt Fuji’s 5th Station (weather permitting) where, with its perfectly conical peak looming overhead, you can take in the breathtaking views over the landscapes below. Returning to the beautiful Five Lakes region, explore Iyashi no Sato Historical Village, a former farming village on the shores of Lake Saiko. Destroyed by a landslide in 1966, the remaining thatched-

roofed houses of this old village have been transformed into an open-air museum and craft village.

Kyoto was capital for a thousand years; today it is the legacy of ancient Japan, full of tranquil temples, silkclad geisha and sublime gardens. The geisha is both an intriguing and integral part of Japanese history – enjoy a traditional tea ceremony with either a maiko (apprentice geisha) or geisha at a typical teahouse. Continue to Ryoan-ji Temple, a Zen temple. End the day at Kinkaku-ji Temple, known as the Golden Pavilion.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED A selection of our most frequently asked questions. Q. When should I arrange travel insurance? A. It is strongly recommended that you are adequately covered by insurance for the duration of your travel arrangements. We recommend that you take out a policy as soon as you pay your deposit. Q. Are there any health precautions or vaccinations that I need? A. We recommend you see your doctor at least six weeks prior to travel for advice and to allow time for any necessary vaccinations. Please remember to take your Tour Dossier with you. To make the most of your trip it may also be helpful to contact a travel and vaccination clinic such as: www.smartraveller.gov.au Tel: 1300 555 135 www.traveldoctor.com.au Tel: 1300 658 844 www.travelvax.com.au Tel: 1300 360 164 Q. How fit do I need to be? A. We want you to have the best tour experience possible, so you should be in reasonably good health and be able to participate in all activities unaided. Some of our itineraries include difficult conditions which can make physical activities challenging. Each group tour is graded to reflect the level of fitness required to assist you in making the best choice. You can also find detailed information in each Tour Dossier, available on our website. Q. What sort of transport do you use? A. The modes of transport included in our tours have been chosen with variety, comfort and enjoyment in mind. On tour, you may travel by coach, boat, train, plane and even rickshaw, all of which will give you a unique Asia travel experience. Road: All coach travel is in comfortable, air conditioned vehicles. Generally there are no toilets on board the coaches; however we take regular comfort stops when possible. Boats: Some tours include a cruise as part of the sightseeing. Depending on the location, the type and size of the boat used will vary. Rail: Facilities on board bullet trains in Japan are clean, comfortable and modern. There is limited space for storing luggage. While our guides are there to assist, you will need to load and unload your own luggage on and off the train. Bullet trains stop very briefly at each stop, so you must be ready to leave the train when your guide instructs. Q. Will I have a guide? A. Group Tours: Every group tour that has 10 or more passengers travelling will be accompanied by a National Escort from the moment you exit the airport, to when you depart. On multicountry tours, a different National Escort is used in each country. Extensions and stopovers are

Call 1300

not accompanied by a National Escort; however you will have the benefit of our knowledgeable Local Guides. Transfers and flights to and from optional extension destinations are not escorted. Independent Travel: Private Tours and TailorMade Holidays are not accompanied by a National Escort, but will be accompanied by knowledgeable Local Guides in each location. Q. When is the best time to visit? Japan: Japan’s climate varies widely between regions and has four distinct seasons. Summer (June to August) is normally warm and humid. Autumn (September to November) brings cooler temperatures after summer. Winter (December to February) is cold and dry. Spring (March to May) is generally mild in temperature. The rainy season usually lasts from mid-May to June and the typhoon season from August to October. Autumn and spring are the best times to visit Japan. Taiwan: Taiwan enjoys an oceanic, sub-tropical monsoon climate. Weather conditions fluctuate during spring and winter, while in summer and autumn the weather is relatively stable. The warm and humid summer lasts from May until September when typhoons sometimes approach or hit the country. The mild winter is from December until February. The best time to visit Taiwan is September to December and March to May when temperatures are cool and rainfall is at its lowest. South Korea: Korea has four distinct seasons. Spring falls between late March to May, and autumn falls between late September to November; these two seasons are the most comfortable times to travel. The winter months from December to early March can plummet to below freezing, whereas the summer months from June to early September are very hot and humid. The rainy season in South Korea occurs from late June to early July. Q. I am a solo traveller – do I have to pay a single supplement? A. At Wendy Wu Tours we understand that some solo travellers would happily share a room on tour to avoid paying an additional supplement. If you are a solo traveller who is willing to share and you book outside of 75 days prior to departure, Wendy Wu Tours will match you up with another solo traveller of the same gender on your tour and neither of you will pay the Single Supplement. If we are unable to find another solo traveller who is willing to share, we will waive the Single Supplement. If you are a solo traveller and prefer to have a private room during your group tour, you can pay a Single Supplement and have your own room throughout the tour. Q. What should I expect when travelling in Asia with Wendy Wu? A. We plan our tours to ensure that your

727 998 or visit your local travel agent

holiday is safe and trouble free and we are continually working with our local partners to maintain and improve health and safety standards. Overseas travel brings new experiences and varied environments and sometimes this means different safety and hygiene standards to those we are used to in Australia. We therefore ask that you take care; pay attention at all times and use your common sense. You are also requested to refer to notices and follow advice from your National Escort or Local Guide. Q. Do you allow children on your tours? A. We allow children 12 years and over on our group tours. For families travelling with children, our Private Tours and Tailor-Made Holidays offer greater flexibility and are suitable for any age group. Q. Are meals included? A. On our Fully Inclusive Classic Group Tours, all meals (excluding beverages) are included unless specifically stated otherwise. Discovering new cuisine is a highlight of travel to Asia and your Local Guide will give you tips on local specialties to try. You will sample a range of local cuisine with occasional western meals, and meals are usually taken at local restaurants. In remote areas, some meals may be basic or repetitive. On Independent Private Tours or Immerse Yourself Tours some meals are included however we have also included several free evenings, offering flexibility for those who wish to explore local restaurants. Please check your day-by-day tour itinerary for details of which meals are included: B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner. Q. How does the tipping system work on your tours? A. Local tipping is customary in Asia. However in Japan, tipping is generally not part of the culture. However if you feel you have received excellent service, please feel free to tip your National Escort or Local Guide at your discretion.

Any decision made in respect of tour services by independent operators to re-route or amend the itinerary due to any of the above or similar circumstances is at the discretion of the tour service provider and Wendy Wu Tours shall not be liable for any claim whatsoever arising from such events.

If you or any member of your party has any medical conditions, dietary requirement/food allergy, or disability, which may affect you while travelling, you must provide us with full details in writing prior to making your booking so that we can assist you in considering the suitability of your arrangements. If passports are not received by Wendy Wu Tours 75 days prior to departure (90 days for multi-country, Myanmar and Central Asia), the customer will be required to pay an urgent visa processing fee. Unless otherwise requested your passport will be returned with final documentation approximately four weeks prior to your departure date. If the customer requests the passports to be returned prior to this, an additional fee will be incurred. Responsibility for documentation accuracy, passport validity, purchase of additional required passport photos, the cost for sending passports to Wendy Wu Tours and dispatch of documents rests with the customer. Wendy Wu Tours accepts no responsibility for any failure in this respect. Wendy Wu Tours does not issue foreign visas. We only submit passports and application forms for visas to be issued by the relevant authorities. Wendy Wu Tours cannot guarantee that any visa will be issued by the relevant authority and accepts no responsibility if a visa application is refused. TIPPING Tipping is generally not part of the culture in Japan, however if you feel you have received excellent service, please feel free to tip your National Escort at your discretion. Tipping for independent travel to other countries is at the customers’ discretion, however this may be expected by guides and drivers where good service has been provided. SHOPPING Shopping can be fun and entertaining, especially in local markets, where many copies of international brand names can be purchased for next to nothing. However, Wendy Wu Tours, its staff and employees are neither qualified nor permitted to ensure or guarantee the quality or value of any goods purchased or the suitability of any retail outlets visited and the security of using a credit card to purchase such goods. In all cases the purchasing of goods and the use of a credit card for those transactions is entirely at the customer’s own risk and at all times the customer must use their own discretion.
