IB Learner Profile in Action

International Baccalaureate Learner Profile What do young people need in order to become happy and successful citizens of the 21st century? First of all, the support from both parents and school. But – how? In the last century, schools had largely become “grade factories” and passing exams at a certain level was the ticket to good jobs, good income and a safe position. But now parameters have changed and are still moving: more and more universities around the world do not rely on grades and points only – that’s the minimum – they are looking at the student personality.

Admission Officers (similar to HR departments) ask for personal statements which should describe “what else” the potential student has developed and can contribute. Thinking outside the box and strong ethical grounding are expectations most institutions and companies have nowadays, and this will grow in the future.

This is why the International Baccalaureate Programmes are ideal. This is also the reason why the IB programmes have a phenomenal growth rate all over the world and especially in cultures of traditional learning. This is why we have decided to dedicate this news issue to the IB Learner Profile. Of course the main evidence for aiming at the learner profile would be found in class room teaching and learning. It is, however, good to see how many different initiatives promoted the holistic approach on top of the standard subjects last year. And equally important: you can see how much students enjoy being involved. Results have not totally disappeared… we are glad to report that the IB DP exams went well and that we are now waiting for the results, and will report back to you in September.

IB Learner Profile in Action

International Baccalaureate Learner Profile Review of past year 2010-2011 In just one school year so much happens, it is difficult to make a choice of activities which highlight the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile - all happenings at the International School of The Hague contribute to these learning profile aims. Looking back over the school year 2010-2011, there are a number of events which showcase students particularly rich with IB Learner Profile characteristics. The few features which follow are by no means exhaustive in this respect. The aim of all IB programmes at The International School of The Hague is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common identity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. IB learners at ISH strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, openminded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.

September 2010 ISH students and staff raised an astounding amount of 2200 euros for the Pakistan appeal! By holding a MAD HAIR, MAD SHOES and PYJAMAS day in school from collections including the auction/raffle of a wonderful hand-made quilt by A. Westin (made from material from the Grease musical production), follow the link to read more on the final outcome of this and further fundraising efforts: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/latest-news-pakistan-floods-fundraising-relief-group. Communicative, risk-taking students took part in the APPRENTISH 2010 competition. The winning team were ‘Elodie’ and the runners up team ‘Cudi’. Follow the link to view the winning advertisement for Cacoon. http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/apprentish-2010. ISH continued to celebrate high success rates with IB Diploma Programme exam results, with a large percentage of Bilingual Diplomas attained, showing not only the linguistic potential our school boasts, but also that our students choose challenging packages. Further celebratory academic achievement were for Leonie and Minouk on their admission into the challenging and rewarding program of Leiden University’s PRE-University College.

October 2010 With historical theatre productions in school from ‘Het Portret Spreekt’ and trips during the Autumn break to Cuba and China, the students’ inquiring mind came especially to the fore. Student council elections were held and an active student council put into place for the rest of the school year. The Student Council members are Imene, Denise, Adrien, Salomé, Puranjay, Anne, Sandra and Gichuki.

International Baccalaureate Learner Profile November 2010 One of the main events was the Model United Nations held at ISH - MUNISH. A conference run by youth, for the youth of today to participate in, and for the youth of tomorrow to benefit from, MUNISH is the embodiment of Model United Nations. It is an admirable opportunity to draw together conscientious, committed young citizens of the world to engage in the exchange of inspiring ideas. An eclectic and international mix of Delegates, Chairs, Press Officers, and Advisors congregate at MUNISH for a weekend jam-packed with debate, hard work and fun. Students who are inquiring into World Affairs, who are young thinkers, open-minded, principled, effective communicators, risk-takers and who wish to increase their knowledge of global politics take part in MUNISH every year, when a board of directors (10 students from year 12) are chosen to run this hugely succesful event. View for more detail: www.munish.nl. November saw much of ISH ‘s talented students compete in the ISH Factor talent show, the competition was close and many performances are on line: www.youtube.com/ ishthehaguevids. The final winner Year 8 student Tim is no stranger to performance and competitions. He took part in ISH Secondary’s musical theatre production The Best Little Theatre in Town, follow the link to view the production’s video: http://www. internationalschoolofthehague.nl/ content/best-little-theatre-town-2 and he also won the Regional Reading Competition in March 2011 for the whole of the province of South Holland.

International Baccalaureate Learner Profile February 2011 Following many communicative students taking part in the world’s largest Model United Nations in The Hague - THIMUN at the end of January, it was time to put Katherine (Y12), Thomas (Y11) and Georgia (Y12)’s public speaking skills to the test.

The BBC Awards for Public Speaking A report by Georgia The BBC Public Speaking Awards are an event held annually by the BBC in association with GNE (Genootschap Nederland-Engeland) and one which ISH traditionally takes part in. It consists of a number of preliminary rounds held over a series of weekends and culminates in a semi-final and finally the national final held in Amsterdam. The competition allows students from schools around the Netherlands to make a speech of up to five minutes on any of the prescribed topics. This is then judged by a panel of jurors on how the speech is presented, the content of the speech and how well the person handled the three minute question section at the end. Katherine (Y12), Thomas (Y11) and I (Georgia (Y12)) had the opportunity to take part in this competition and challenge our oratory skills. Thomas participated in the preliminary rounds held in Utrecht, where the eventual winner of the national finals made her first speech. Unfortunately he did not make it through to the next round. Katherine and I took part in the preliminaries in Doorn. Katherine, speaking on

“Ideas that will change the world” gave it her best, but the competition was just too high as we would both discover as the speeches wore on in our separate heats. In my heat I spoke on a popular topic of “Is life becoming too dangerous?”, speaking against others who expressed opposing arguments. I was lucky enough to be chosen as runner up in my heat and put through to the next round; the semi-finals. These were held in Nieuwegein, where all those who had been picked as either winners or runners up in their respective heats and preliminaries came together to battle it out for the all important eight places in the national finals. Once again the level was high and the speeches varied. I unfortunately did not make it through to the finals, but missed out to two very talented speakers. It was a great experience; to voluntarily put ourselves up in front of others to try to convince them of our opinion and to get feedback from the jury on what points we could improve for the future. I know in my case, having participated in the BBC Speaking Awards I have definitely gained more confidence when it comes to speaking publicly. Further student successes were celebrated around this time, with a presentation afternoon on February 4, 2011 for Year 11 students to present their Personal Projects to the assessing teachers and to the whole school community. View photos on our website gallery of this successful afternoon. Resounding success is student Edmond’s achievement. Three inquiring ISH students Edmond, Nikhil and Raoul succesfully took part in the TU Delft Junior College challenges, with Edmund’s solar boat challenge winning a prize for best work. http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/tu-delft-junior-collegesuccess

museums around the world - view www.googleartproject.com ISH Year 11 and 12 students were viewing their own art - in all forms - in London on the Arts Trip. Inspired by the drama of the musical Billy Elliot, many risk-taking drama and mime events followed: The 7 Deadly Sins: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/drama-7deadly-sins-0 Mrs. Hunnington’s Ball: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/mrs-hunningtons-ball

Reflective traits were mirrored in the Tribute Concert held for the late prof. dr. Malcolm Davies who was our Subject Area Leader for the Arts. He was a popular teacher of Music and respected colleague. In tribute to some aspects of his rich life, a memorial concert was held on March 11, 2011 in the Malcolm Davies Auditorium. He will not be forgotten: he did not just work here, he was an educator in the best sense of the word, leading his students to enjoy and practice music. Our choirs, orchestra, bands and the over 200 weekly individual music lessons, held here at ISH, were based on Malcolm’s initiated achievement. On the subject of achievement, there were more than 500 ISH participants in the City-Pier-City Run, winning ISH a prize for the most participants from one organisation. An organisation overwhelmingly showing the balanced trait of the IB Learner Profile. Attracting around 18,000 participants annually, City-Pier-City Run is an international half-marathon held in The Hague. It begins in the city centre, heads out to the pier at the coastal resort of Scheveningen and back to the starting point. The day also includes a 10km fun run and other recreational walking and running

International Baccalaureate Learner Profile events of various distances and is a great day out for all of the family. Continuing to run, though this time for the worthy cause of KIKA, a children’s cancer charity, is Ms. Maaswinkel, Head of P.E. at ISH. She will be running the New York marathon and to do so has raised more than EUR 5000- to date for the KIKA fundraising cause. http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/ms-maaswinkel-runningnew-york-marathon-purpose More community and open-minded spirit was evident on ISH International Day. International Day was for the whole school community, proving very popular with many visitors enjoying a trip around the world in just one building! ISH together with the Parents Association raised around EUR 5500 with food & beverages, EUR 900 with the book sale, EUR 300 in the collection box and sold 200 ‘we care - T shirts’ in aid of helping the earthquake disaster in Japan. http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/successful-international-dayphotos-online-now

April 2011 An official opening of the IB DP Art Exhibition before the Art exams commenced in the second week of April was an opportunity for the students to show off their work to a wider audience – their parents, friends, fellow students and other teachers as well. There was reason to be proud – the exhibition and the subsequent exam was a culmination of the two years of their IB DP Visual Arts course: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/ib-dp-art-exhibition-photosavailable-now

May 2011 GREEN WEEK saw a car-free campus and students enjoying a week full of green awareness and fun activities. Competitions, guided tours of ISH Green Space, and many other GREEN related activities have certainly made their mark in school. Students thinking about everything they do and acting upon it. SHMAG school magazine editors made the decision to go GREEN and issue their last paper edition in June 2011. Enjoy the student magazine from now on, online: http://shmag.bleep.nl In their June edition’s article ‘Islam or radical Islam?’ is a true example of Year 12 student Yaseman as a thinker. Yaseman delivered this speech publication for a speechwriting assignment in an English B class. The speech is described as brilliant - and comments in the class were that the speech made students really think. At the end of the speech, Yaseman calls for us all to challenge ourselves to be critical thinkers. The speech writing assignment was open to students’ interpretations - they could write on any topic from any point-of-view and overall, ISH students’ creativity and depth of thought was demonstrated, though Yaseman’s important message, was delivered in a way that made all students reflect.

June 2011 Much cause for celebrations in sports. House teams were set up this school year as was a brand new Sports website: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/sports-2 The Yellow House Team became the all-round winner, and the ISH Silverbacks were rewarded with a well-deserved trophy: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/ish-teams-play-big-hagueleague-school-flag-football-tournament Efforts were tremendous in the sporting field, especially during the Varsity Tennis Championships, hosted by ISH: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/isst-division-iii-varsity-tennischampionships-2011 Congratulations also go to Year 9 student Signe who won First Place in the Save the Children Photo Contest 2010-2011: http://www.internationalschoolofthehague.nl/content/save-children-1st-prizecongratulations
