Historic Coronation day rehearsal takes place at Halton
If you live within earshot of RAF Halton, you may have noticed a lot more band music coming from there in the week leading up to the Coronation in London on 6 May. Vital parts of the RAF’s preparation and practice for the coronation parades and security were taking place at the base.
Bands and marching sections from all over the RAF were gathered at Halton because of its open space and facilities. Its extensive roads and parade ground were large enough for the whole contingent to practise the precise movements and timings that would happen for real on the streets of London a few days later. A route was laid out to match the road sections, widths and turns of the London roads.
RAF Halton is often used to practise for such major ceremonial events – including the late Queen
Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in May 2022, and her state funeral later that year in September. Wendover News was invited with other press to watch one of the last full rehearsals at Halton on the Thursday prior to the coronation parade, and we took the picture featured here.
On the coronation day itself in London, the RAF, together with representatives of the other armed services, took part in the return procession ahead of King Charles and Queen Camilla as they left Westminster Abbey and travelled in the gold State Coach through the roads to Buckingham Palace. The procession ended in the Buckingham Palace garden, where the King received the salute and colours presentation from representatives of all the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Armed Forces.

Wendover Dementia Support looks after the social wellbeing of people and families affected by dementia in Wendover and the surounding area. They had their annual general meeting on the 10th of May.
Dr Pippa Moreton thanked all the volunteers and friends who attended the second AGM of Wendover Dementia Support (WDS), for all their sterling support over four years. Covid lockdown meant that no AGMs could have happened during that time.
Her thanks went to the drivers who help transport the visitors and their carers where appropriate; the welcomers who look after the visitors during each session, the administrators, the hospitality from the kitchen – including home-made cakes – and all the back room work that goes into supporting the whole family.
Wendover Dementia Support currently looks after fifty-two families and has supported a total of one hundred and ten families since it was formed.
As well as offering games – dominoes is the favourite – and crafts, activities include knitting, singing and even dancing. We have two sessions on Monday mornings, and numbers have grown to exceed the capacity of Wendover Christian Centre. Experienced trustees are available for confidential aid to families about specific issues. Carers can also attend special sessions at workfriendly times. Tea Dances on Saturdays have also been restored, one in December and another in the Summer.
The relationship between Westongrove Health Centres and Wendover Dementia Support is completely professional.
The work of Wendover Dementia Support is enabled by donations and legacies of the visitors and family members, as well as grants. These include Wendover Parish Council and Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, as well as local organisations including the Friends of Wendover Health Centre. At the AGM, Stephen Worth, President of Wendover & District Rotary, gave a cheque value £2,200 (see photo below). The AGM was sponsored by the son of a visitor.
Dr Moreton was very grateful for all the financial support but insisted that the main thing WDS gives to its families is love, which allows them to flourish while they live with dementia. Visit our website at wendoverds.org.uk email wendoverds@gmail.com or ring 07732 342409.

Proudly displaying our Top 20 Care Home Award 2023, Residents and Members of Rayners Resident Committee and Management and members of our excellent ‘Team Rayners’
Rayners
Rayners was established in June 1990, being the first purpose built care home for the elderly in South Buckinghamshire. Set in the Chiltern village of Hyde Heath, Amersham, with our local pub, village shop, infant school and village green, Rayners and our residents remain an important part of the local and vibrant village community.
2023 Top 20 Award
We are officially one of the Top 20 rated care homes in the South East of England in 2023. This award from carehome.co.uk is extremely special to us at Rayners. The South East covers 9 counties and included 2708 Care Homes. Carehome.co.uk remains the leading independent UK review site for care homes. Chris Matthews, Managing Director of
Rayners said, “The whole of ‘Team Rayners’ feels extremely privileged to have received the Top 20 Care Home Award for 2023, for the South East of England. It is a great accolade to their commitment and hard work in ensuring Rayners remains committed to the highest standards of care and service to all our residents and I would like to thank and congratulate them all.” Residents too were elated to hear the fantastic news. Our Residents’ Committee is already planning a Champagne Garden Party in the Summer as one of the things to commemorate this fantastic achievement.

Ellesborough Road closures
During June there are going to be extended closures of Ellesborough Road as the various underground utility services are diverted along the temporary diversion route behind the cottages. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout, but vehicles will be diverted via Terrick.
Work on the embankments for the bailey bridge is progressing, with drainage and underground electricity cables installed in May. The new road is due to open in September.
Nash Lee road diversions
The diversion of Nash Lee Road and Lane (see photo below) are due to come into use on the 4th of June, and the road between the Wendover Bypass roundabout and the Chiltern Brewery will
be closed the week before to alter the road layout. We’ve been assured that during this closure that Ellesborough Road will remain open to allow traffic to get to and from Butlers Cross.
Ongoing excavation
In addition to removal of topsoil we understand that the Environment Agency has allowed HS2 to excavate one metre of sub-soil for the Green Tunnel (see photo below), and its location alongside the bypass is now becoming more visible.
Construction exhibition
HS2 are holding a second 'Meet the Team' exhibition at Lindengate on 15th June between 15:00 and 19:00 when you will be able to interrogate the project managers and engineers building the line. Their Mobile Information Centre will also be back outside Budgens on 12th July, 10:00 to 15:00. Details can be found at www.hs2.org.uk/events
Issues with HS2?
With increased construction activity over the Summer Months there’s a likelihood of more issues arising. If you are affected, please contact the HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 (available 24 hours a day) or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk. It helps if you have photographic evidence and please get a complaint reference number so that we can follow up issues as needed.

If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@ whs2.org
Further digging is dependent on HS2 coming up with an acceptable plan for handling any interference with the Coombe Hill aquifer. The HS2 Minister has agreed that we will see the plan once agreed, but no date has been set as yet.

Wendover Youth Centre are sad to announce that our Lead Youth Worker and Centre Manager, Pete Swinford, will be leaving at the end of this academic year to relocate to the southwest.
Pete began working for the Centre in early 2020. He kept the Centre going through the Covid pandemic, which only a handful of youth centres managed to achieve, with a mixture of Zoom calls, quizzes and film evenings. Since then, Pete and his team of sessional youth workers have grown the Centre to the success it is today. We run seven weekly sessions including craft, sport, art and baking and currently engage with up to 150 young people each week.
The Trustees, staff and young people would like to thank Pete for all the work and time he has put into the Centre over the last three years and wish him every success and happiness. We will all miss him.
We are now in the process of hiring a new youth worker. If anyone is interested please contact admin@wendoveryouth.co.uk for a full job description.

A Coronation Creation from WYC
Nash Lee Road and Nash Lee Lane have been closed from the end of May to early June to tie-in temporary diversions to the Nash Lee roundabout. The temporary diversions will become operational once this is complete. This will allow us to continue construction on new permanent road realignments in the area and the HS2 line itself. Access to Nash Lee Lane for residents and Shepherds Hut Nursery will be maintained through the closure.
The temporary diversions include a 55m road bridge to take road users over our site. The Nash Lee Road diversion is to the West of the existing road and on Nash Lee Lane, there will be a new access directly from the roundabout.
In July we have planned overnight closures of Risborough Road to install a further temporary bridge. This prefabricated structure will be lifted over the road in a series of overnight closures. Risborough Road will eventually be closed
permanently, and the new Stoke Mandeville relief road will be opened in its place.
As our construction continues to ramp up throughout 2023, we invite you to visit our next ‘Meet the Team’ event. Members of both our construction team and community engagement team will be there to answer any questions you may have around of the works we are carrying out in the area. The Wendover 'Meet the Team' will be on Thursday 15 June from 15:00 – 19:00 in the Jeffcoate Meeting Room on the Lindengate charity site, HP22 6BD.
To stay informed of our works don’t forget to register for email updates on the HS2 website which gives a choice of how you would like to receive information from us. The recent BBC Wild Isles Documentary highlighted that the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and our wildlife is in crisis with a quarter of all mammals at risk of extinction. In this documentary, that is available on iPlayer, Sir David Attenborough reiterates that 'We now have a few short years during which we can still make a choice. Where just enough remains of the natural world for it to recover. This starts and ends with us'.
If you are keen to get involved, then one of the best places to start your journey is to visit the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk. From here, you can explore lots of ways to get involved.
At Home – make your garden or balcony wildlife friendly by providing food, water and shelter. Embrace organic gardening practices to preserve beneficial insects and pollinators.
At School – Schools and colleges can play a key role in saving our wild isles by making schoolgrounds a haven for wildlife and inspiring the next generation of nature champions. Get started and act for nature with free tools and resources from WWF and RSPB.
In their first major campaign together, WWF, the RSPB and the National Trust are calling for an immediate end to the destruction of UK Nature and urgent action for its recovery. Saving our Wild Isles is an urgent call to action for all of us, and everyone has a part to play in reversing the harm done to nature over the last two centuries.
In Your Community – You can sign up to the Climate Action Wendover Newsletter on our website www.climateactionwendover.org to learn about local projects and volunteer to help out with tree planting and our food forest project.
So, let’s all take action now, and together we can save our Wild Isles.

With Saturday 24 June being Armed Forces Day and Wednesday 21 June being Reserves Day, I thought I would write briefly about Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) for the military.
Having served in the army before taking up law, I am delighted to be working regularly with members of the military, both serving and retired, as well as non-military personnel who work on military bases.
A well-planned Will enables you to decide who looks after your estate and who benefits from it. I strongly recommend that serving and retired military personnel consider having a professionally drawn up Will prepared, both to plan for your and your family`s future, and to provide peace of mind.
Wills – detailed or straight forward – can be prepared quickly and at short notice whenever required.
LPAs are also extremely important, both for you and your family, such as when posted overseas, on operations or on exercise. They again provide peace of mind knowing that you have decided who can look after your affairs should you want them to, or should they ever need to, for whatever reason.
With my background I understand many of the issues you, or your family, may have with the various demands of military life. If you have any questions, or concerns, about Wills, LPAs or related matters at any time, please do just contact me for a free, no obligation chat.
Having a registered Armed Forces Covenant, I offer a 10% discount to any member of the military (serving or retired) and their immediate family, as well as any staff working on military bases.
If you have any questions, or would like to discuss any of the above, or related matters, please contact me on iain@wanstallconsulting. co,uk or 01296 415700. You can also find more on my website: www.wanstallconsulting.co.uk

Chiltern Way Academy Celebrating success
Chiltern Way Academy, Wendover is celebrating the success of two ex-students, Jordan Brown and Kai Carswell.
Jordan joined the school as a year 8 back in 2014. Whilst at school, he enjoyed a wide range of subjects but PE was a particular interest for him. He left Chiltern Way Academy after completing his exams and made a promise that one day he would return to see them. In March 2023, Head Teacher Paul Coffey, received a call from Jordan asking if could come in and visit the staff and students.
Since leaving the school he went on to do A-levels, which eventually led to him studying ‘Sports and Exercise Science’ at Oxford Brookes University (achieving a 2.1). Whilst at university he acquired a personal training qualification which led him to become a personal trainer. He still has a hunger for education and is now at St. Mary’s University where he is completing a Master's degree in Strength and Conditioning. Paul Coffey said "Jordan is a real success story for CWA. He progressed so much during his time here both socially and academically. We are all very proud of what Jordan has achieved and wish him the best in his future studies and career".
Kai Carswell is also enjoying success in his career since leaving the school’s sixth form in 2022. After joining the academy in Year, 7 Kai took part in all subjects, while excelling in his BTEC mechanics studies. He now uses this passion in his new career working for EROS Hire Tools where his knowledge of all things mechanical comes into play. He impressed the firm early on and was recently promoted to Lead Hiring Manager – a role he is enjoying and thriving in. Kai says, "The promotion was a challenge because I deal with complicated and detailed hiring arrangements. I need to be organized and keep track of a lot of numbers
and data. I also need to deal with customers and help sort out their issues in a calm way. My time at CWA Wendover prepared me well for these challenges. The staff and qualifications helped me develop the skills I need to cope with the technical and human challenges I face every day".
Head Teacher Paul said, "Kai really developed his people skills at CWA. He learned to be calm and always looked for solutions to solve problems. When faced with a challenging task, he showed his learned maturity to find the best possible solution. I am not surprised he is doing well in a career that needs someone to be personable and thorough. In our sixth form, he really stood out in these aspects. We wish him all the best in his career!”

Message from Atilla at McCoys
A customer of McCoys, Wendover, dropped some cash on the floor when queuing for food on the evening of Friday 31 March. A notice was posted on the Wendover News Facebook page on Thursday 6 April. This usually elicits a response from the public but not on this occasion. After much soul searching, the staff of McCoys decided to give the money to a charity supported by the finder.
Closure of Wendover Twinning Association
It is with great sadness we announce the cessation of the formal Twinning arrangement between Wendover and Liffré. This was a cordial agreement, reluctantly taken, accepting that lifestyle changes on both sides of the Channel have greatly affected the feasibility of the link. I would like to thank the current committee and members for their continued help and support, and also pay tribute to the founders and all those past members – and to our French hosts - who did so much to make the Association a happy and successful enterprise since its creation. Deep friendships have been made which have led to many happy memories of weddings and christenings. It was unanimously agreed that any remaining funds will be donated to Wendover Community Library

The future of Coombe Lodge
Several Wendover residents are concerned about a planning application concerning change of use from Class C2 care home (residential) to a Sui Generis Hostel for Coombe Lodge, Nash Lee End, HP22 6BH which has been derelict for many years. Full details can be read online
Since 3 February, 88 comments have been received (to 12 May 2023) by Buckinghamshire Council, most of which object. Our own Councillor Peter Strachan is the Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration. He spoke on this matter at the Wendover Parish Council meeting of 2 May 2023 and assures Wendover News that the application is undergoing proper process as it passes through the rigorous planning process of Buckinghamshire Council. His fellow Ward Councillors, Richard Newcombe and Steve Bowles, are representing the disquiet of local residents, particularly the parents of children at the Day Nursery and wish to reassure residents that their views are understood.
Cllr Richard Newcombe has called the application into the Planning Committee. This should mean that the application will be decided by the Central Buckinghamshire Planning Committee instead of being delegated to officers.

As Wendover News transitions to the new community interest company, the team is looking to recruit a suitable volunteer to fill this role. The escalating rook saga seems to be at an end; they obviously read Wendover News, saw my request for rook pie recipes, and took fright. This month’s highlight was a ‘President’s Day’ courtesy of our President, John Firmin, a stalwart of the club; it was a very special day and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. We also have to thank Agripower, Chiltern View Nursery and Riley’s Farm Shop who have sponsored a very smart new scoreboard for us.
After 9 years, Julia, our current Group Secretary, is standing down in September. We are now looking for someone to fill her shoes. The role includes issuing agendas and keeping the meeting minutes. An understanding of scouting is helpful but not essential; a DBS check is required. If you would like more information, please get in touch with Andrew.inkley@1stwendoverscouts.co.uk

RAF Halton
...continued from Front Page:
The coronation was the largest military ceremonial operation for 70 years and involved more than 9,000 service personnel, of which 6,000 were on ceremonial duties, 949 of them from the RAF. The RAF Regiment, the Combined Bands of the RAF, RAF Halton, the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, RAF College Cranwell and other RAF units took part. The station provided its own personnel to accompany RAF Halton’s Colour, as well as other parade personnel and drill instructors, totalling 96 officers and aviators from Halton.
The RAF presented its seven Colours (ceremonial flags) at this event, representing the King’s Colour for the Royal Air Force in the UK; Number 1 School of Technical Training; the RAuxAF Sovereign’s Colour; RAFC Cranwell; RAF Halton; the RAF Regiment; and the Central Flying School.
Today RAF Halton delivers basic recruit training for all non-commissioned aviators at the start of their career, and command, leadership and management training as they progress through the ranks. All recruit training was paused for two weeks to facilitate the preparation for 650 parade personnel and a further 150 support personnel.
• On Sunday 25 June RAF Halton personnel will be marching in the streets of Wendover to mark the RAF’s Freedom of the Vale of Aylesbury. For times and places to watch this see our website: www.wendovernews. co.uk

Since the installation of our Groundhog Container on Hogtrough Lane, our current membership has been growing with the number of active Shedders now into double digits. They have been busy preparing the site and the workshop in readiness for a wider opening.

They are supervised and have a simple handtool project people can get involved with. Alternatively, you may like to get involved with some of our larger practical projects, such as building our outdoor covered area, or even a project of your own.
We continue with our Coffee and Natter sessions, where you can simply meet the team, drink tea and coffee, and eat biscuits.

Coronation commemorations! A scrapbook of memories
Wendover marked the coronation of King Charles III on 6 May in characteristic style. Streets and shops and public buildings were decorated, flags were everywhere, while local schools and clubs put on events and competitions.
The Parish Council laid on live music and food and drink stalls in Witchell on the Sunday after the big event. About 350 people enjoyed a sunny afternoon. Which is just as well, as the coronation day itself was cold, grey and wet so only the hardy put on outdoor street
parties on that Saturday, but the sun was glorious for picnics on the day after!
In a tradition going back centuries, the bells of St Mary Wendover church were rung on coronation day.
On the Bank Holiday Monday, many people followed the King's call to donate the day to voluntary work around their local areas, and for instance people descended on St Mary's churchyard to help tidy up overgrown sections

St Marys church notes
St Mary’s bell ringers rang on Saturday 6 May, Coronation Day, prior to the Coronation Service in London, and then again before and after the Sunday service at the church. Over these two days, the ringers rang special arrangements of call changes which had a royal flavour – some were called "Kings" and "Queens" and another called "Coronation," which was originally composed for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
The ringers also marked the Coronation by ringing a series of quarter peals, involving continuously ringing a specific pattern of arrangements called changes, lasting around 45 minutes per quarter peal. Four quarter peals of what’s called ‘Bob Doubles’ (1,280 changes) are being attempted throughout May.
We had a full church for our Celebratory service with fizz afterwards. On Monday morning 28 gathered to tidy the churchyard with volunteers from both the church and village community.

Bucks Radio and the Bucks Bear visited the Big Lunch on Sunday 7 May in Witchell
Wendover Parish CouncilMatters Arising
I’m writing my first view from the Chair following a wonderful Coronation Big Lunch event that was a resounding success. Many thanks to all those involved in making the day so spectacular in particular Phoebe, our Estates and Events Manager, for all her hard work. Thanks to all those of you who came along and contributed to the fabulous atmosphere, and we were most certainly lucky with the weather!
Our outgoing Chair, Sheila, will be sorely missed at the Parish Council where she steered us through quite the most challenging time in recent history with the pandemic and the HS2 project. Sheila worked very hard for our community, and we are very grateful and wish her all the best in her retirement and look forward to seeing her around the village.
My parents have lived in Wendover for 20 years and I moved back here with my husband, daughter (who is currently at Wendover Juniors) and two dogs in 2016. We absolutely love Wendover, the history, and the beautiful Chilterns.
At our 2nd May meeting we agreed the Chair and Vice Chair (Clive Gallagher) and decided all the Committee memberships. We currently have three vacancies so should anyone be interested please contact Andy, our Clerk, for details. Thank you to all those who responded to

our Manor Waste consultations. There were lots of good suggestions that we are going to take into serious consideration but following our meeting in May we will be keeping the historic name and celebrating our heritage.
Wendover Parish Council is responsible for grass cutting of its parks and additionally certain verges on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council. A combination of the weather and preparations for the Coronation event have meant that we are a little behind. This means that the first cuts will be on grass that is longer than usual, and this creates more mess. This is only going to be temporary, and we should be back to normal in the next few of weeks. A reminder that we are not responsible for most hedges as this falls under Buckinghamshire Council or the landowners. Further, any parking on verges (big rocks designed to stop parking on verges) means we must use a strimmer instead of a mower which causes more grass to be blown around. Our contract means that we need to clear grass from pavements but not from the roads. For those who are interested in No Mow May or more wildflower verges we would like to see more too but our contract means that we are unable to do this without negotiation, however it is something we are considering.
The Council decided to enter the Buckinghamshire Best Kept Village Competition
2023, in the small towns category. The Parish Council will be making every effort to keep Wendover in a clean, tidy, pleasant, and presentable condition, however much of the judging is based on the condition of private and business properties and areas beyond the jurisdiction of the Parish Council. The judging period runs from Thursday 1st June 2023 through to Friday 14th July 2023. If you want more information, please contact estates@wendoverpc.gov.uk.

Congratulations all!
Finally, we are very much looking forward to hosting the RAF Halton Freedom of Buckinghamshire Parade on Sunday 25th June. Please note there will be road closures, along the High Street, we will share more information on this. We hope to see everyone out enjoying the celebration of what should be an impressive spectacle.
