Starting up afresh
Lionel Abel-Smith Trust
We were delighted when Past Chairman Tony Mogford CBE agreed to become our inaugural Patron last year. Although it was delayed by various lockdowns, it was with tremendous pleasure that we were able to present Tony with a plaque to commemorate this special occasion. It was presented to Tony by the current Chairperson, Gwen Williams, in the presence of all the trustees at a tea party held at Road Farm. Lionel Abel-Smith Trust is about to launch a fantastic new user-friendly website where you can apply for grants from the Trust online. Watch Wendover News for information about this as the website will be live in the next month or so.
More and more regular events in and around Wendover are starting up again. The Events pages, 2 - 5, have expanded back to pre-Covid proportions and include all sorts of regular and one-off events. There is no cost for brief entries in these pages. If you're looking for a hall or room to hire, see ads on pages 10 & 21. The Wendover Society relaunches with its Harvest Supper on Friday 1 Oct. Wendover Parish Council has been able to run the annual Village Quiz. For dates and teams, see page 19. The Manor Waste will become a beer keller Fri 8 - Sun 10 - see also ad on page 7. The Rotary Duck Race is going ahead again, see page 11 for details. A Wendover Music weekend, see ad page 4. Our local charity Pace has a plethora of fundraising activites to join in with. Scenes of the day at Wendover Youth Festival
Wendover Youth Festival 2021
On the first of September, Wendover Youth Centre held its annual Youth Festival at Ashbrook Park, marking the end of the summer holidays and the beginning of a new chapter. After the festival was sadly cancelled last year due to the pandemic, it was fantastic to coincide this year’s festival with the celebration of the relaxation of the pandemic restrictions. Despite a slightly worrying start to the day, the weather held up and the young people of Wendover were able to participate in a whole host of activities outdoors! As always, the inflatables were a huge hit (by ES promotions) alongside the sporting activities hosted by Premier Chilterns. The attendees also participated in brilliant mental health activities (Youth Space), arts and crafts (Crafty Sue) and environmental-action activities (CLAW). A highlight for many was the delicious
Overall, over 150 young people between the ages of nine and eighteen attended the festival. It was great to see so many young people enjoying themselves and spending time with their friends after what has been an incredibly challenging year for everybody. We would like to thank all the organisations, volunteers, young people, and parents for making the Youth Festival a fun and fantastic afternoon for all! We have already started planning for next year’s event. We can’t wait to host an even bigger and better day for the young community of Wendover!
Wendover Foodbank is part of the Chiltern Foodbank network, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. No one in our community should have to face going hungry. If you know an individual or family in need of the food bank, please contact John Shaw on 07899 964037. The Wendover Foodbank serves Wendover and the surrounding areas including, Halton, Weston Turville, Aston Clinton & Stoke Mandeville. During this week we encourage Wendover and the surrounding community to donate food to the food bank. Any donation is extremely appreciated and will go towards creating a food box for an individual or family who needs it. For information regarding what items are needed and where to drop them off please refer to the flyer. Any questions or enquiries please email Peter Swinford at peter@wendoveryouth.co.uk or call on 07950667895.
In the meantime, see our website or social media to find out details about our weekly sessions. Also, don’t forget our friends and supporters’ event is on Monday 4 October. Please get in touch with Chris Heald for more information regarding this event: healdchris13@gmail.com.
Wendover Foodbank Donation Week Monday 4 - Sunday 10 October 2021
In the last year and a half Wendover Youth Centre, Churches Together in Wendover, and Wendover Parish Council came together with Wendover Foodbank to organise three food bank donation weeks during the Covid-19 Pandemic lockdown. The whole community has so far donated over 1500kg towards the food bank and due to the continued demand in the area we have decided to run another food bank donation week.

Demise of the cottages on Ellesborough Road
We are expecting the imminent demolition of cottages on Ellesborough Road which we have known about for some time but it’s still heartbreaking to see it when it happens. The scale of the clearance is about to become visible to us all. The diagram below shows the width of the cutting excavation and the two temporary roads. The work is now expected to start in October.
September. There is a powerful film at www.standforthetrees.org which clearly highlights the climate emergency which HS2 is creating. While we might hope that the Government’s post-Covid spending priorities might cause HS2 to be cancelled, we’re remaining focussed on doing what’s right for Wendover and by seeking the best available mitigation. Please see our website www.whs2.org for more information.
Community mitigation funds
We have identified up to 10 funding schemes whereby groups, businesses & residents can apply for mitigation funding to offset some of the harm HS2 has and will cause and support the local community with new initiatives. So far 157 projects have had their money assigned by HS2 with the current average funding of 50k, with a number Diagram showing proposed works including the width of the cutting excavation and the temporary roads. of projects being successfully received for Wendover & surrounding villages. Chris Packham’s Petition At press date we were awaiting the outcome of this highly subscribed petition to reconsider HS2 altogether, with this being debated in Parliament on 13
WHS2 is applying for a number of initiatives to mitigate some of the harm done around our market town so watch this space to see if we are successful.

Wendover News October 2021
We would encourage all groups to submit their pitches for mitigation funding. If you do want to apply and don’t know what to do, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org and we’ll assist however we can.
Improving the current scheme
Evidence has been presented to HS2 & BC about our noise, traffic & aquifer concerns and we continue to push both to accept our modelling for plans to be changed to remedy these issues. If you can support our group in any way or want to be involved with our mitigation improvement work, please do get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org.
Lorries everywhere
In November 2015, it was promised by Tim Mould in the House of Commons Committee meeting that “there will be no construction traffic in Wendover” but we believe this promise has already not been kept. If you witness poor behaviour from HS2 contractors or see a lorry in Wendover, then take a picture and send us the details at enquiries@whs2.org.

Duck Races, Sunday 24 October
Last year, Rotary in Wendover held its first Duck Race in Wendover. This year it will take place again but this time there will be two different races for different types of ducks. To avoid crowding, the times of the races will not be announced unless we are certain that local Covid infection rates have dropped sufficiently. The races will be live streamed on https://www.facebook. com/RotaryinWendoverandDistrict. You can purchase the number of a duck (£2) from J Brown Funeral Servies at 23 High Street or any member of the Rotary Club of Wendover & District. Profits from the duck races will be divided among Rotary supported charities including the MS Centre and Pace. Classic Duck Race This will pitch up to 400 small ducks into the Heron Stream by Heron Path Cottage.
The current will take them towards Chapel Lane culvert where they will be caught and three winners announced. Business Duck Race Ducks for the Business Race will cost £15. These ducks are double the size of those for the classic race and each business will be invited to decorate their duck as they see fit (using environmentally friendly paints etc). Each business can retain their duck to be used again next year in which case the 2022 entrance fee will be reduced to £10. Prizes classic race

Club Corner The Hills are Alive with exciting musical news! The Wendover Singers are planning a phased restart at the end of September with a newly refurbished school hall awaiting them.
Two thirds of the 80 members have indicated that they are ready to restart so this will be Phase One. A third of the members want to start soon but not yet, so they will do so later, maybe half term or next term, and this will be Phase Two. There are many more, on an ever-growing waiting list who will be invited to join as soon as room capacity and COVID regulations allow. … And in strict order of their name being added to the list. If you are a member, you will have been receiving regular newsletters over the past months. If you would like to add your name to the waiting list, please contact the community choir on info@ wendoversingers.com. We can’t wait to get back to singing together again and to catch up with everyone! Sue Thornton
Wendover Sparrowhawks
The netball season is back! After what has been a challenging 18 months for everyone at Sparrowhawks headquarters, we are delighted to be returning to the Aylesbury League for competitive netball this autumn. As a Club, we endeavoured to maintain contact with players throughout the pandemic, be it through online fitness sessions or outdoor modified training, using England Netball modifications. The Club was able to organise the ever-popular Wendover Netball Summer League this year for the third time which, as always, was well received and supported by other local clubs. Despite the challenges faced in the last year or so, we are so excited to have a continually expanding Club, with two established teams entered in the Senior League and a third team in formation. Our Youth Netball Club is also flourishing, with three teams entered into the Youth League this autumn too. We would like to thank the 12

Wendover Horticultural Society
The Society is up and running after lockdown. Our first meeting in September was a success and well-attended, as was our coach trip last July. The next meeting is at St Anne’s Hall (new venue) on Thursday 7 October, at 2.30. We are fortunate that our speaker is Edwin Rye, about “Festive Floral Themes”. Here in Wendover we have such talented and knowledgeable people as available speakers. New members and visitors will, of course, be welcome, £3.00 admission. COVID rules are being applied. Our Meetings and Outings Secretary is apparently practising what we preach. She and her partner, Patrick Lambert of Starveall Farm make a good team, as they won the competition by Chiltern Hills Farmers Agricultural Association for the best farmhouse garden, looking for environment and diversity, as cultivated by working farmers rather than by fulltime gardeners. Apparently the garden is a Work in Progress, but isn’t that so with all gardens? Neville Morton
BBOWT heralds 'The Return of the Skylark'
We are happy to announce that our talks at Great Missenden Memorial Centre will continue in October, November and December. On Tuesday 19 October at 7.45pm Nick Marriner of the Chilterns Conservation Board will present a double act with Will Lacey, a local farmer. They will review what has been achieved so far with the 'Chalk, Cherries and Chairs' project, for example in surveys that record the return of some of our formerly common farmland birds like the skylark. Then they'll look at what the future holds for farmers, wildlife and the general public under the new
environmental regime. Doors open at 7pm for coffee and an opportunity to socialise. Admission is £5 including refreshments and a raffle ticket. On Sunday 17 October we invite you to our traditional Plant and Produce Market at College Lake (HP23 5QG) from 11am till 1pm - see advert page 4. We shall feature a great variety of plants mostly donated by members and sold at highly competitive prices for BBOWT funds - enquiries to John Catton (richard.catton1@ntlworld.com) please. Our reserves remain open daily and free of access except for College Lake which is open everyday except Monday from 10am till 4pm and where we request a small donation from visitors. Enjoy the autumn colours at Dancersend (HP23 6LB) and come to Mick Jones's talk about the reserve on Tuesday 23 November. Richard Birch, BBOWT Chilterns Group
Wendover Cricket Club
Wendover Cricket Club’s last ever event at the Ellesborough Road ground is on Saturday 25 September, starting about 11.00 and continuing until early evening. It’s planned to be an 8-a-side tournament with teams of current players and at least one of ex-players led by Iain Digby. Anyone is welcome, especially past players and members who want a last memory of it as a cricket ground before HS2 take it over on 1 October. A bar and BBQ will be operating. Both league teams finished lower mid-table in their divisions. The 1st XI had a tense 2-run victory at Bradenham where in reply to 116-10, the home side added 46 for the last wicket but lost their last wicket on the final ball; young Thomas Duff again starred with a personal senior best of 5 for 26 off 10 overs. Meanwhile at home, the 2nd’s had a slightly bigger 5-run win v Whitchurch Jacks, with Anshuman Pandit making 58 and Arshad Mahmood & Rahul Kedia both taking 3 wickets. Jonathan Seabrook took 4-33 v Whitchurch Kings and Hector Charlesworth hit 52 in a 23 run defeat. Highlights in friendlies: 12 year old George Greer on his senior debut at Monks Risborough took 3 for 35; v Ebury Strollers, Hector Charlesworth 93, Chris Hunt 72 & Charlie Barrett 5 for 26 set up a 69 run win.

for the winter. This strange year has put an extra burden on the committee but they have risen to the challenge and the Club is in good shape. Membership has been maintained, unlike some clubs I have heard of who are struggling to get members to come back after the long breaks due to Covid. One of our members achieved a second Hotshot recently. A Hotshot is a bit like a hole in one at golf; it means that all your team's bowls in an end count and none of the opposition's do. It is rare enough for Bowls England to issue a certificate. The coincidence was that she achieved it on exactly the same day of the same month but nine years apart. Anyone who reads this and isn't a bowler must have found that absolutely riveting. Never mind, you can wake up now. So here we go on our indoor season. Hopefully there won't be too many restrictions on numbers in the clubhouse. All of us have missed the social side of the club life but let's hope we can enjoy to the full very soon. Don Knight
We believe that everyone deserves to stay in their own home with all the care and support they need for as long as they wish. It's the little things that make the biggest difference and we can arrange hourly visiting care or around the clock live-in care, depending on your needs. "I contacted Ashridge Home Care just before lockdown for COVID 19 as my very elderly parents had previously only had visiting care for 3 hours a day. They were extremely professional and efficient and within 4 days we had a full-time carer move in. I can’t recommend Ashridge more highly.”

This year 40 hospice supporters took part on the charity’s first ever Ridgeway Hike and raised over £70,000 for local hospice care.

The walkers each had a different reason to why they wanted to take part in the hike and support the charity, many walking in memory of loved ones who had been cared for by the Hospice team.
The 80 mile hike follows the Ridgeway, used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers, from Swindon back to Aylesbury, walking and being supported by fellow walkers, united in the same goal – to support Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity.

Bringing some colour to Nightingale’s Rainbow The tiling of Nightingale’s Rainbow, a structure to celebrate the response of individuals, organisations and communities across Buckinghamshire to the Covid-19 pandemic, began in September. Over the next few weeks thousands of coloured tiles will be added to the 5.5metre structure at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire to form a rainbow, which became a symbol of hope and solidarity with the NHS in communities across the country during the Covid-19 lockdowns. As well as a being a permanent monument to the resilience and kindness seen in Buckinghamshire, the structure is also the focal point for a fundraising campaign to support Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust’s Charitable Fund. Each of the coloured Rainbow Tiles which form the Rainbow can be dedicated to any
individuals, organisations or local groups with a message of thanks or support on the virtual Nightingale’s Rainbow to ensure the acts of kindness and resilience seen through the pandemic are remembered. The money raised through Rainbow Tile dedications will be used to support local healthcare workers, patients and families through the two charities. “The messages already left at nightingalesrainbow.org.uk are full of love, thanks and gratitude and we are so proud to be involved in the project which will not only ensure that these acts of kindness and strength are not forgotten, but will also help local patients and families in future by supporting these two local charities. We encourage everyone to add their message to ensure their loved ones, or those who supported them or their
loved ones through the crisis are recognised and remembered as part of the Rainbow,” said Lee Lloyd, Head of Fundraising at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. You can get find out more about Nightingale’s Rainbow and how to dedicate a Rainbow Tile at www.nightingalesrainbow.org.uk.

Wendover Summer Scarecrow Trail Congratulations to Alison for another brilliant Summer Scarecrow Trail (Sunday 15 to Tuesday 31 August) to entertain us all during the summer months including making and visiting. We needed a lot of cheering up during a depressingly dull and cold August!
Most correct guesses
Only two entries scored 37/37; these were submitted by two siblings, so first and second prizes were randomly selected. Then there were 13 people who scored 36/37 so again a name was pulled from a hat for the third-place winner.
Alison's back up team was: Miranda, as there is so much admin; Bob, who provided the wooden medals; and Fiona who sold the entry forms along with The Shoulder of Mutton and Premier Stores at Princess Mary Gate. Fiona also provided the venue for the presentations which were made at 3:30pm on Saturday 4 September. The whole event was sponsored and judged by Jeff Harris of Hampden Financial Services.

Mission to Zero A landmark scientific study released by the United Nations in August 2021 declared that human activity is changing the climate in unprecedented ways. The report warned of increasing wildfires and flooding, continued glacial melting and rising sea levels all of which should be seen as a code red for humanity. However, scientists are saying that a catastrophe can be avoided but only if the world acts fast to rapidly cut greenhouse gas emissions and stabilise rising temperatures.

Wendover Canal Family Volunteering Day Wendover Canal hosted the IWA Volunteering Day in August. This year due to Covid regulations this was adapted to a taster of 4 hours length. This attracted younger participants and as arranged on a Monday, unfortunately NO Dads. The day started by the required H&S talk, high vis, gloves and one 5 year old even wore his own hard hat. Then into bricklaying, this became quite competitive, with fighting for the bricks. But under Alex’s expert eye, a sturdy good wall was built, albeit in the middle of the car park. Then off for a stroll along the towpath, 7 children, 6 adults, 2 wheelbarrows and a push chair. There was a purpose. We were out identifying the BUG, BEE, BIRD & BUTTERFLY population. An added bonus was a peer down a rabbit hole. Along the way we also checked out the flora and berries on the hedgerow, and some lucky children also managed to find a few tasty damsons to eat.
As the bookings were taken in advance, the younger complement was known. This enabled Alex Melson IWA to hone in on the skills available. He built a BUG HOTEL and brought this along for the children to fill. So, after a picnic lunch sitting on the grass at Whitehouses, the children were dispatched with the task of finding twigs, hollow branches, dead grasses and any other material which they could fit into the BUG HOTEL to make a comfortable home. Then, using secondhand bricks from the canal they built a HEDGEHOG HOUSE and covered this with natural vegetation to encourage future tenants. The day was ALL GO, no time to dally, off went the contingent following the winding
path along the woodland walk to the viewing platform. A short easy explanation of a pumping station followed, enhanced by Jenny Morris’s recollection of clearing out the cellars during a WRG work party. Finally, the children were given handfuls of wild meadow seed. This they distributed with gay abandon on our future meadow area (a Tidy Friday work party had strimmed an area ready in advance). As well as the publicity this gives The Wendover Canal, it encourages children into the outdoor environment. They all enjoyed themselves on this outdoor adventure. Hopefully they will make further visits to the area to check out any occupants in their BUG HOTEL & HEDGEHOG HOUSE. Jenny Brice, WCT Events Team

As a very small child, thoughts of his grandfather made Tom Cross remember the blue colour of the formica kitchen table but even more strongly, the smell of soap and porridge. The soap was Imperial Leather so shape was important, too.
Tom engaged with library users of all ages to gather ideas. Artist Tom then liaised with writer Aoife Mannix to create the other pieces on show. To extend the exhibition and engage with visitors who are reluctant to enter libraries at the moment, Soap and Porridge was digitised on twitter https:// twitter.com/SoapPorridge. To learn more, you could visit https://tomxarts.wordpress. com/about/work-in-libraries/. You will have the opportunity to interact with the artworks on dispay and share your own memories including colour, shape, and most of all, smell. This is open to all.
For many of us, smell is the sense which gives us the strongest emotional response. The visit of the exhibition to Wendover Community Library in October will be the last stop of its summer tour. During this time, visitors have been asked to write down any smells which remind them of happy or sad memories. Why not go along and be inspired by the examples shown there?

Tribute: Liz Griffin Elizabeth Anne Griffin
Liz was born in Ripon in the winter of 1945, following the end of war in Europe. She passed away after a short illness this summer, aged 75, having lived in Wendover since 1989. She grew up on a North Yorkshire farm, the eldest daughter of Kit and Betty Webster, and big sister to brother David and sister Ros. She attended Harrogate Ladies College and went on to York University to read Sociology in 1964. Liz married Ken aged 21 before relocating to South Wales in 1968, where she worked for Newport Job Centre until starting a family in 1971. After returning to Yorkshire for a period, Ken’s career brought the expanding family to Berkhamsted, then - in 1989 Wellwick House, Wendover. By this time the house was full with eight children: John, James (1973-2012), Edward, Alexandra, Stephen, Timothy, Paul, and Annie-Kate. In the midst of this she took a further degree at the Open University and a PGCE to begin a teaching career. Liz specialised in giving professional support to children with specific learning difficulties, and enjoyed a long career at Egerton Rothesay School, Little Gaddesdon Primary School, then around 25 years at The Royal Masonic School, Rickmansworth. She also leaves twelve grand-children
Megan, Lotte, Josie, Samara, Maddie, Imogen, Florence, Betsy, Felix, Harriet, Jimmy, Cora; and four step grand-children Max, Roddy, Ella, and Ava.
Liz was an amazing lady and I personally have fond memories of our discussions on many subjects relating to the support of those with learning difficulties and new solutions, ideas and methods. Her enthusiasm and Liz with her first two children c 1975 determination to keep Liz is already deeply exploring new ideas was an encouragement to missed by her large and grateful family. us involved in training others to help children When we explain that Mum had eight children, and adults with specific learning difficulties.Ruth the reaction is often one of astonishment! We I worked with Liz for 21 years and knew her still don’t know how she managed. There was as a real friend and wonderful colleague. She never a dull moment in the house, but Mum always had a twinkle in her eye! Liz has helped somehow guided us through thick and thin, with so many children (100s) over the years and has all the loving care she could give. Food shopping a wonderful legacy. Anne was a military operation, and Christmas must’ve been particularly stressful for poor Mum! But We always walked back from Choral Society she enjoyed it. In later life, it was gratifying to together. I was full of admiration for her see Mum reinvent herself as a special needs continuing work for students with special needs, teacher, combining her interests in children and and her stamina in travelling to Rickmansworth… psychology. Our appreciation for what she did for I also admired her walking. I could not keep up with her and the distances she covered. Janet us only grows with time. We’ll miss you, Mum x. Stephen Griffin It was much too soon to lose someone like Liz, Throughout Liz's life, she taught people to express themselves by the letter, yet she embodied life's spirit in her scatty absent-mindedness. John Griffin
who I remember as being talented, cheerful and energetic. I can picture her arriving at Potten End school in the mornings with several of her brood and thinking "How does she manage?" Margaret
When Liz joined our U5 support group we asked if her daughter was her first. When we discovered that Annie was her eighth, we relied on her for advice as the most experienced of us all. Jane
Liz will be someone who I will always remember as a lovely bright and sparkly lady, always willing to help anyone, and of course an adoring mother to her children. Sue

Visit from Action for Children
17 August at the RAF Halton Youth Activity Centre, the Action for Children youth workers came to deliver an ‘Air Play Olympics’!! With Stations taking part up and down the country there are 9 events including the Flamingo Stand, Balloon Race and the infamous Egg and Spoon. Youth Worker Julia Purton said: “This is a fantastic day to be part of and the children really enjoy it.” The Airplay programme supports RAF families and helps children flourish. The Airplay youth workers work in partnership with RAF Community Development staff to deliver a range of activities for children and young people. Activities provided through the Airplay programme aim to stimulate and nurture children’s aspiration, ambition and resilience and also provide vital support and reassurance to families. Airplay services are funded by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
Station Commander Coins
24 August at RAF Halton, the Station Commander, Group Captain Startup, was thrilled to award two more of the respected Station Commander’s Coins. The first coin went to Shirley Hardy in the busy Registry office. During the pandemic, Shirley has worked tirelessly as the workload increased due to the additional mail coming into the Station from the surge in online shopping. Shirley was also integral in the takeover of the ceremonial swords from Supply for an interim period; a busy function on top of her registry role. She also came into work during her weekends to decorate the new Registry offices. The second coin was awarded to Rebecca Mead who is a senior physiotherapist at RAF Halton. Rebecca is the civilian lead physiotherapist on McTeague rehabilitation flight and has guided recruits through their recovery process, often with many external challenges. Her ability to coordinate care pathways within new restrictions, along with her exceptional communications with not only the recruits, but also training staff and the rest of the medical team, has been exemplary.

Local Face: Will Burns Will Burns was born in London but moved to Wendover, a move back to the village for his parents Pete Donne and Shell Burns, at the age of 9. He attended the Middle School in the village and then Aylesbury Grammar School. From an early age Will was interested in books and reading, and at the Grammar School he found himself gravitating towards the study of literature, eventually taking that interest to university in London. Through his twenties, living in the capital, Will had a band with his brother Greg, releasing two albums and playing gigs across the country. When the band decided to call it a day, Will began to concentrate on other kinds of writing, and began publishing his poetry. His first short collection was published in 2014 with the prestigious Faber & Faber as part of their New Poets scheme, aimed at finding new literary voices. A couple more short poetry collections followed, and a first book of poetry, Country Music, in 2020. During the first lockdown in that year, Will began work on a series of journalistic

prose pieces, commissioned by his friend and fellow Wendover resident Carl Gosling, for his Social Gathering website. These pieces became the basis for a first novel, The Paper Lantern, published in July 2021, set in a fictional version of Wendover, and more specifically in his parents’ pub, The King and Queen.
"Wendover has always loomed large in my imagination," Will says, "so that even when I haven’t lived here, it has seeped into my work in different ways. That might be the landscape or the people, the ideas I have about what makes village life so interesting and often misunderstood. I always had a dual pull to both London and back here to Wendover, and feel very lucky to have sort of lived out both versions of a life. I’m also very pleased to have been able to attempt to translate the life of the village as I see it onto the page. It might not be a universal story, it’s my own, after all, but I hope I’ve managed to capture the colour of the place a little bit, and to communicate my love of the place, which is deep and complicated."
Wendover has played a hugely formative part in Will’s life, and it is here that he cultivated lifelong obsessions with wildlife, walking and cricket, and Will was very happy to have The Paper Lantern by Will Burns is out now, the chance to move back to the village from including from the King & Queen.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 5 October, 7.30pm St Anne’s Hall For all meeting and committee dates The Parish Council hosted two Play in the Park please visit our webpage sessions in the school holidays which were well www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/meetings received despite the weather for the first one. We hope to continue this in future years. Wendover 20mph Zone – Residents’ Consultation At long last things seem to be getting back to normal with schools returning, just as the weather improves, and even theatre trips!
An afternoon tea event was organised on 7 August, to thank all those who had volunteered in the Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme. It was great to meet the people who had given of their time to support others in the community, although not everyone was able to attend there was a good turnout, and thanks again for that effort. For once it was a beautiful day which also gave us an opportunity to see the work in St Anne’s garden. This is a reflection area with benches, roses and herbs to create a quiet meditative space, supported by a WPC grant. We are expecting the cycle path improvements to either have started by the time you read this, or to be imminent. This will involve some signage on roads and a new piece between Halton Lane and Castle Park Rd to complete that part of the route. Details on the upgrade to the canal path are still being confirmed so there are no dates as this goes to press, but I am hopeful that some work can be completed before the winter sets in. That’s all for now so carry on keeping safe! Sheila Bulpett
Wendover Produce Market Saturday 16 October, 10am to 2pm Manor Waste
Based on recommendations from our Speed and Noise Working Group, we have launched a consultation to hear residents’ opinions on a proposal to implement a 20mph speed limit throughout most of the village. Please go to our website www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/20mph-zone to complete the survey. If you don’t have online access, paper copies of the survey are available from the Clock Tower. Benefits of a 20mph zone include: • Significant improvement in road safety for pedestrians and cyclists. • Studies have shown a fatality risk of 1.5% at 20 mph versus 8% at 30 mph for pedestrians involved in a car impact accident. • Particularly important in Wharf Road, Manor Road and South Street which are used for schools’ and nursery access. • Also, benefits from increasing physical exercise thus reducing levels of childhood obesity. • Decreased danger caused by proximity to fast-moving traffic along stretches of limited pavement width in some parts of the village. • Reduced emissions from motor traffic, notably particulate emissions, and lower traffic noise levels would provide health benefits to the whole community. • Increased safety from slower traffic encourages more walking and cycling, reducing vehicle traffic and emissions in line with that change.
• Reduced noise and emissions will enhance the experience of pedestrians and encourage the use of outdoor space – particularly the increased utilisation of the Manor Waste for table service café customers.
Five Year Strategic Plan
Our Five-Year Strategic Plan Working Group has held a few meetings and discussions with Council and should have a 2021-2022 plan ready for the November budget deadline. The working group will be seeking the input of the parish for the longer-term 5-year strategic plan, so watch this space for a larger consultation with all residents and businesses in the parish in the coming months.
