CLUB CORNER
Wendover Cricket Club
Two of Wendover Cricket Club’s 13 year olds have come to prominence in the senior teams in the last month. Thomas Duff was called up to the 1st XI at Little Gaddesden and his left arm spin claimed 2 for 39; playing again at home, his 3 for 10 v Waddesdon took him to the top of the 1st XI bowling averages. James Godden kept wicket well at Little Marlow and then played a mature innings of 48, a personal best and easily the team’s top score, that rescued the team from an ignominiously low total. Other notable youthful performances include Charlie Barrett’s 4 wicket maiden and first ever hattrick (all bowled) and Marc Weltenius’s 51* off 23 balls – both in the U19 match at Wooburn Narks that was won by 10 wickets.
The club is having to clear out its buildings at its Ellesborough Road ground, ready to hand over to HS2 on 30 September. Although much will go into store, old style wooden bar tables and chairs etc. will be disposed of unless another home can be found for them. The ground’s final event is on Saturday 25 September after which there will be a mad rush to clear everything out. The planning application for the new ground should be submitted in August and the plans will then be available to view. Wendover Bowls Club
This Covid has a lot to answer for. Just two days before our Gala was due to be played one of our members tested positive. As she had been playing and using the clubhouse there was no alternative other than to cancel and shut the Club down for a few days. All the clubs we had invited had to be contacted and fees returned so, not only was it a lot of work, there was a big loss in revenue as well.
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of our outdoor season and the indoor mats will soon be brought into the clubhouse. By the time this gets into print the Finals Matches will have been played, marking the end of all the internal club matches. One important fixture has already been decided, the Ladies versus the Gents. The numbers were not quite even so a couple of ladies suddenly found they had changed gender. Even with the help of the fair sex the Ladies were triumphant and the Gents were presented with the wooden spoon.
I have mentioned before the slightly odd language that is sometimes used in bowls. It must be one of the only games that a gentleman can call down the green and tell a lady that she is a bit skinny (has not bowled wide enough) or that she has too much weight (bowled too fast). Of course none of our ladies are skinny or too heavy, just slim or cuddly. I think I'd better sign off before this hole I'm digging gets too deep.

BBOWT Chilterns Group talks are back!
We are restarting our popular evening talks 'live' at Great Missenden Memorial Centre on Monday 20 September. There will be a great selection of interesting subjects kicking off with 'The Future of Wildlife and Farming'. The speaker is Giles Strother of BBOWT who is in charge of persuading landowners and farmers to adopt new wildlife friendly strategies as the old farm subsidy system comes to an end. The talk will start at 7.45pm but doors will be open earlier with refreshments available so you can catch up with friends. For the new season admission will be £5 including drinks and a raffle ticket and we shall have a card reader at the door. Seating will be moderately spaced out. Please join us! Meanwhile, all our reserves are open daily, except for College Lake which closes on Mondays, so it is time to go and enjoy an early autumn walk.
