Wendover Scarecrow Trail is back!
8am Sun 15 August to 8pm Mon 30 August.
Remember what fun we all had enjoying the creativity of our neighbours last summer? This year's theme is children’s literature. • To enter you must be able to display a scarecrow for two weeks in August, the scarecrow must be robust enough to withstand all weather, rain, wind and hopefully sunshine. • The scarecrow must be displayed all the time. • You must not reveal the identity of your scarecrow, you can have props, clues, and comedy poses that will help the participants but please do not confirm the guesses.
These are the judging criteria: 1. Peoples favourite 2. Judge’s favourite 3. Best use of props

4. Innovative use of location 5. Comedy value There is an admin fee of £5 to display a scarecrow, email scarecrowtrailwendover@ gmail.com or through Facebook www. facebook.com/SummerScarecrowTrail. The organisers will reply as soon as they are able to. No guarantee you will be able to have your first choice of scarecrow, there were duplicate requests last year so the sooner you apply the better. HS2 pressing ahead damaging noise pollution
despite
HS2 plans are ploughing ahead despite the threat of incessant, irritating, and damaging noise pollution which will arrive with the trains. It appears our fears that we will all have to just get accustomed to the disruption and noise pollution are becoming a horrifying reality!
Doing what’s right for Wendover
We have identified numerous reasons which prove HS2 train noise pollution will be worse than expectations defined in the Act, whereby the vast majority of homes in the Wendover assessment area could experience noise pollution above the limits. Evidence has been presented to HS2, who have responded disputing our findings. However, we do not accept any of their comments and are taking this up with them.
Our survey on Noise Pollution
Huge thanks to all who took the time to complete this short but important survey. An overwhelming majority preferred improved noise mitigation even if this has a visual impact and supported our proposals for a retained cutting in north Wendover (where the train is in a narrow cutting with nearvertical walls) and an arched barrier in south Wendover (like a tunnel but above ground). This information will be included as backup for Buckinghamshire Council Officers to consider when undertaking their planning reviews of HS2 plans & designs.
Wendover Dean Viaduct Planning
Our diligent Buckinghamshire Council Officers working with our re-elected Councillors have delayed the Wendover Dean Viaduct planning
submission approvals for nearly 2 months waiting for HS2’s contractor EKFB to furnish them with relevant information and reassurance. At time of going to press we Artist's impression of Wendover Dean viaduct for HS2 Ltd, in learnt that the Wendover fields east of the A413, passing over Bowood Lane, see also Dean Viaduct design was to https://chilternsociety.org.uk/hs2-photo-diary/. Environment Agency are accountable & due diligence is done Regrettably, Bucks Council were unable to get the designs changed at this point in the Lots continues around us process, however there are reassurances • St Mary’s Church, Stoke Mandeville old in place from HS2 that the design can be village – archaeological works continue to changed to improve issues if this is necessary exhume the graveyard and the cemetery in the future. is to be relocated to a new site off Marsh
Despite all this we will not stop
We remain determined that despite HS2/ EKFB continuing to push ahead, in spite of our reasonable cost and time-saving mitigation solutions which we have provided. We must and will continue to point out where things can be reasonably improved, because it is never too late to intervene and make the necessary changes which can leave a lasting positive legacy for all those residing & working in and around Wendover, both now and in the future.
YOU too can help:

Lord Berkeley we are now also engaging with Baroness Bowles of Berkhamsted. The Baroness, a Liberal Democrat peer, is helping us to question the Government on HS2 and represents a welcome additional channel to continue that work. Why delays in Wendover? To the north of us some vast viaducts are already completed and to the south the tunnel boring machine is grinding away at the Chiltern chalk. The fact that major construction isn’t starting in Wendover might indicate that, as we have said all along, HS2 has complicated itself to a standstill near to us. Watch this space. Litter Picking in Wendover We've all noticed the overflowing litter bins in Wendover and elsewhere. Our current take-away culture seems to have produced overwhelming amounts of litter as an unintended by-product. The countryside code, published by Natural England, www.gov.uk/ countryside code, suggests for example:
Protect the environment • take your litter home – leave no trace of your visit • dog poo – bag it and bin it • care for nature – do not cause damage or disturbance Keep Britain Tidy had a great British Spring Clean from 28 May to 13 June. Wendover Parish Councillors used their own equipment on Wednesday 9 June to pick up litter along Tring Road, see photo on back page. Rotary in Wendover used Wendover Parish Council equipment to do the same on Friday 11 June. Many other local organisations have picked up the litter of others in the past and no doubt will do it again in the future.

Rotary Challenge Rotary in Wendover hopes that other Wendover groups will be able to join in a great initiative to keep Wendover looking beautiful. Wendover Parish Council and Buckinghamshire Council already spend a lot of Council Tax money on litter and if a place starts off looking neat and tidy the public responds by maintaining that state. Any of us could take responsibility to clear up a grot spot in Wendover. We could keep the place looking good for all of us to enjoy, including the wildlife. Please contact editor@wendovernews.co.uk if you'd like to become involved. Let's work together to keep Wendover beautiful.

At the time of writing, the PM’s announcement on lockdown restrictions for 21 June has not happened. Meanwhile a meeting is scheduled at St Anne’s Hall at 2.30 pm on 1 July. Also we are organising a coach outing to Rodmarton Manor near Cirencester on the 15 July. Both events are difficult under current rules, but we badly want to restart, should the rules be relaxed in time. The signs are not good at the moment, the Committee will have decided whether or not we go ahead, with more hindsight, with updates posted and e-mailed. At our next meeting local horticultural expert Edwin Rye will be giving us ideas on colour and scent when planning our gardens. This will take place on Tuesday, 13 July at 7.30pm. We are very much hoping to meet again at St Anne’s Hall if the final restrictions are lifted on 21 June. We will be on the lawn outside (inside

Our fantastic Under 14s had an unbeaten season, playing 14 matches, with 11 wins and 3 draws, finished off with an impressive 8-1 win away to Langley Hornets. The 8 stunning goals came from a Logan Newark penalty, a bottom right-hand corner shot from Finn Kirby and hat-tricks from Alex Groome and Max Sato. It is such a pleasure to welcome visiting clubs again and an equal pleasure to visit them. Let's hope the rising tide of pandemic infections does not scupper the further relaxation of the rules. Sadly one of the nice traditions after matches is still not able to take place. We always used to sit down with the opposition for a meal and a chat at the end of play. We made many good friends in that way. Now all we can manage is a socially distanced drink. Not really the same.

Playing music to get the cheese dancing Since venturing into the cheese world over a decade ago, I have always kept a careful eye on the way that our cheese is kept. For one, it is a product that can easily spoil if not looked after. Also, and importantly, to avoid the growth of any harmful bacteria, the temperature of your cheese fridges has to be spot on and in line with your local EHO’s recommendation. When No2 Pound Street first opened we had a 1.5 metre deli counter and a tiny walk-in fridge. Today we are lucky to have 2 further fridges. The second was installed roughly 5 years ago and the third has finally just been put into action. Our deli counter is now roughly 2.5 metres and took us 2-3 years to put in place after opening the doors in 2010. We had no idea what we were going to need. One thing for sure is a small business with limited funds only grows organically and only when there is a reasonable harvest, (unless you have very deep pockets). We also would not have been able to afford our latest fridge had it not been for winning a Bucks Business COVID recovery grant. This I hope will make our working lives easier. Certainly our cheese stock-takes are quicker we can now actually see all the cheese. So why three fridges you may ask? As we are a small operation, in order to increase revenues we had to expand. There was no way that we could afford another property so we decided to take on several local farmers and artisan food markets (hard work but worth it). This has helped us bring in much needed funds for payroll and other operational costs but importantly we are now able to spread the
Three Counties Plumbing
word on artisan cheese more freely. This for me personally is great especially as I know that what I do helps support other SME’s that need all of our support – especially when compared to the industrial giants that are truly faceless and only offer inferior mass produced imitations. So having more fridge space means you can sell more cheese … simple really. So my new fridge – what a breath of fresh and gently cool air it has been. This will allow us to further develop our skills as we now venture in to the world of affinage. As I type we have a 25 kilogram truckle of a very young Mary Quicke’s Cheddar about to embark on a journey of time. Ageing cheese is an art, it is kind of like being a great DJ playing the right music for the crowd to dance too. I must offer my thanks to heroes like Alan Hayes from Capital Refrigeration for his advice and Tag Refrigeration’s amazing install with project manager Michael Bradley. Without these exceptional companies' wisdom and experience I could not have achieved this. Importantly, being able to buy cheese to age on directly from the cheesemakers can open a world of opportunity. If you can help free space from the cheesemakers own cheese ageing rooms you are potentially helping to increase the production of artisan cheese. There is a chance that the cheesemaker will offer a sharper price point as well, which is nice. So as a brilliant cheesemonger, do consider how you keep your cheese and if you can in time learn the art of affinage – I believe there is a big future right here and right now (as Moby mixed) in the British Artisan Cheese World. Now that is music to my ears. Let's dance… James Grant, No 2 Pound St

HS2 Construction Update Our works within Wendover are on track, as we reach our summer milestones of having our compounds operational, including the concrete batching plants and we are currently preparing the ground surface for the silos. When operational, this will allow the majority of the concrete used on our sites to be made and distributed locally, which in turn enables us to reduce the number of cement lorry deliveries we need on the local road network. There will be continued ground investigation (GI) and site clearance work along the line of the route, some of which may require temporary traffic management in the form of lane closures with lights around the A413. We will also be required to close and temporarily divert some local public rights of way that are next to our working areas. We will create a full outline of all closures and diversions in place throughout the works and this will be available to all users of the footpaths.

as they will provide access for people, vehicles and materials to move along the line of the new railway and will reduce the amount of construction traffic using the local public roads. We have already started works on the designated plant crossing areas around the Hill Top Lanes, where our access road meets the existing local road network. These crossings help keep local road users and our construction staff safe by managing the flow of construction traffic crossing, leaving and entering the highway. During July we will be returning to the lanes to complete further works to the crossing points. There will be a need to close the roads in turn again, so please do allow some extra time for your journeys. HS2 and the Free family Views from Rocky Lane
My parents bought our small cottage in Kings Ash 38 years ago and it is situated on top of Rocky Lane. My father always said it was the house with the beautiful view. The "theatre" of the changing seasons always delighted us.
our garden always had local and visiting walkers. It was also a favourite for many of Duke of Edinburgh Award groups. But no more. The footpath has been blocked by HS2 and the closed sign appeared overnight with no warning. HS2 delight in telling us how they care for the environment with their mitigations and engagements to the local communities but I see little evidence of this where I live apart from the odd official letter with its aerial views and details that are often subject to change.

When Rocky Lane was closed recently for over 2 weeks for the removal of parts of a hedgerow further down, the Lee Forum, our local online information platform, https:// www.thelee.org.uk/the-lee-forum-2020/, was the place to go. If I needed to go to Wendover - like going to Wendover Health Centre for my mother - the diversion added 16 miles to the journey! In 2010 this concern about diversions was raised by many of us in the hilltop villages soon after the HS2 project was announced. Assurances were given, but if it is like this now what will it be like when construction of the line gathers pace? With increased traffic on our narrow potholed lanes we have been forgotten by the Government and HS2. We are just a group of scattered houses in the way of their amazing scheme. Because of the traffic I no longer walk along Kings Lane like I used to. The Chilterns is a special place with its rare

chalk streams, ancient woods and hills that are home to many animals and plants. Being designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), one would have thought our Government - especially with its so-called drive for biodiversity in our environment and going carbon neutral - would strive to cherish it. Their words sound so hollow now as I gaze out over the valley to Jones Hill Wood; vandalized by chainsaws, its Barbastelle bat roosts and badger sett gone and Durham Farm reduced to an HS2 compound. This is some of the price paid for this £100 billion scheme: A price too high! Conservation is an obstruction to HS2 construction! This is the real priority of our Government! Johanna Jane Free

Holidays and Carbon Footprints As Britain emerges out of lockdown and life gets back to normal, Climate Action Wendover reviewed recent research published by the magazine nature to understand what impact the global pandemic has had on carbon emissions.
As we prepare to head off on a well-earned summer holiday, let’s take a moment to consider the impact we will have travelling and staying at our holiday destination. A return trip from Wendover by a medium sized petrol car to popular destinations such as Newquay or Windermere emits 345kg CO2 per car. However, this is considerably less than a family of four flying return economy from London to Faro in Portugal which would emit 2110kg CO2.
After rising steadily for decades, global carbon dioxide emissions fell by 6.4%, or 2.3 billion tonnes, in 2020, due to many parts of the world coming to a forced standstill and economies shutting down. Unsurprisingly, the biggest dip in carbon emissions was from February to May Everything we do releases carbon dioxide 2020, before steadily rising again to reach preinto the atmosphere but there are a pandemic levels by December 2020. number of carbon offsetting schemes The pandemic has provided a unique lens such as carbonneutralbritain.org that fund on the challenge that lies ahead for nations renewable energy and forest projects, committed to fighting climate change. Station Commander Coins
Congratulations to Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) Drummee and Senior Aircraftsman (SAC) Tierney for receiving a Station Commander Coin in May. In addition to performing their primary duties as photographers for Air Combat Service Support Unit (ACSSU), A/Cpl Drummee and SAC Tierney were vital components of the hugely successful Air and Space Power Conference 2020. As the lead photographers, videographers and editors of the first ever virtual Air Power, they liaised with all ranks across all services as well as ministerial personalities. A/Cpl Drummee and SAC Tierney received rave reviews from all involved, and ACSSU received a letter of gratitude from Chief of the Air Staff! A/Cpl Drummee’s coin presentation was carried out virtually as he is currently working from RAF Valley. Congratulations to three members of the Airmen’s Command Squadron (ACS) who were awarded the Station Commander Coin by the Station Commander, Group Captain Dan Startup, in May. FS Rodda has developed and delivered the ‘Thriving at Work’ package, not only for ACS, but for RAF Halton and the RAF as a whole. FS Southey is known for her work as a Defence Trainer; but it is for her work on the ACS Mercury Team and the innovation and effort she has put into totally overhauling ACS Student Learning Journals that she has been singled out. FS Sayer went over and above his duties in Training Support Flight. He ensured that the training analysis Formal Training Statement development, training and leadership requirements for ACS were all in line with the new generation RAF. Congratulations to them all!

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Since my last view, I am delighted to report that the Parish Council has re-elected me as the Chair for this year. The new Council met on 17 May and Committee memberships have been decided. At our meeting on 1 June, we were delighted to co-opt a further three Councillors and we very much look forward to working with them, encouraging them to make use of their various skills for the good of Wendover. Welcome Clive Gallagher, Julie Lloyd Evans and Ruth Malleson, there are still two vacancies, and anyone interested should contact the Clerk for details.
ambiance of Wendover is conserved during planning applications. Congratulations to John Currell, Hannah Hook, Alan Myers, Peter Lockett, Susanna Allford, Jonathan Clover and Jane Larkham Current ongoing work within the Parish includes a second consultation for the parking review, accessing funding for repair of the canal towpath, looking at designs for inclusive play equipment to be placed in Hampden Meadow and a skate park on Ashbrook, to name but a few. HS2 has been mentioned earlier so I will leave that for now. Hopefully by the time you read this, lockdown will have moved on further, but stay safe! Sheila Bulpett

Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme
On a delightful day, Wednesday 2 June, the Council awarded four Community awards to: Lillah Alderson (Outstanding Young Person), Ron Melville (Volunteer of the Year), Staff of Abbeyfield House (Service with a Smile) and Marilyn Storer (Lifetime Achievement). In addition, the excellent work and commitment of the Wendover Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group (2015-2020) was recognised by awarding each member, the Freedom of the Parish. This is the highest honour that a Council can bestow and was extremely well deserved. The Neighbourhood Plan is considered and used to help ensure that the character and www.facebook.com/wendoverparish/
For the past year, during an unprecedented time, the Parishioners of Wendover have been supported with an army of volunteers helping those in need due to the pandemic restrictions. It has been an extraordinary example of community spirit, selflessness and commitment from those who set up the scheme, maintained it over the past year and all the voluntary wardens. Our most heartfelt thanks go to every single one of those who stepped up to help and provide support where it was needed the most. As we hopefully come out of lockdown over the coming month or so, the need for support, we anticipate, will continue to reduce. The wardens who are still
supporting their neighbours will continue to do so at their discretion based on the need, whilst the entire Good Neighbour Scheme will be placed as a ‘reserve force’ into our Parish Emergency Plans for when the Parish requires it in the future. We sincerely hope that all our Parishioners will be able to enjoy Wendover and the surrounding villages opening around us and wish everyone a happy and healthy summer.
