Schools Kindling skills with CWA Bushcraft!
The students at CWA have worked hard this year during Bushcraft lessons. The subject embodies Forest School principles and develops hugely important life and employment skills. The students have been busy building and maintaining an outdoor classroom that has become a huge part of their self-guided work. This time of year, a typical day starts out with a fire. Students use the fire for warmth, cooking, and several traditional crafts. We then get to work with whatever we need to do which might be fixing a roof, sorting out drainage or looking for a plant species for a specific purpose. Skills that we need are learned along the way, sometimes through teacher direction or sometimes by student led discovery. Sometimes the students just enjoy being outside, we learn to appreciate the seasons and learn about our immediate environment. We are looking forward to more signs of spring and some dry weather so we can get some different projects up and running.
Older students use the skills from Bushcraft and apply them to their Duke of Edinburgh award. This year our sixth formers will be attempting the gold award. Duke of Edinburgh organisers have told us we are the first special school in the country to ever enter students for this top-level award, so we are hoping to break the mould for the special schools sector and see our students earn qualifications that will be with them forest of their lives! Paul Coffey Head of Wendover Campus, CWA
John Colet School Governing Body
We are looking for new governors to help oversee the strategic direction of the school. There has obviously been massive disruption to learning, despite all those online lessons, and the students have missed out on the clubs, sports and social side of education. Practical subjects have really suffered. There will have been no traditional GSCE exams for two years so there are big issues of catch up and missed curriculum as well as student mental health and well-being. Even if we have vaccinated “normality” again by September, the effects of the last two years will be felt by students for many years. As a governor, you can help to steer the school and get the best education and experience for the students.
We are looking for new parent governors and will also co-opt people who bring specific skills, for example in audit and finance (accountancy or bookkeeping). Governors are all members of the Full Governing Body that meets typically three to four times a year. We also ask each governor to support one of the two sub committees: Curriculum that looks at what is taught and how the students are developing, and Finance and General that looks after the money and is building new facilities like the long-awaited canteen and new sports facilities. Meetings are usually on Tuesday evenings, during term time and start at 7pm. We try to finish by 9pm. Papers are available online before meetings. If you would like to discuss these roles with a current governor, please get in touch with Mrs Claire Rawlinson, Head of Finance and Business and we will arrange a call or email response if its just a quick question. Our next full meeting is in June where we will appoint new Governors, so please let us know by 14 April if you are interested. If you are a parent or carer, please let us know your child’s name and form. Dr J Savin, Chair of Governors John Colet School

Local charity asks for help to reopen their doors
Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity have welcomed the plan for reopening of nonessential shops from the government and are working to reopen all of their Charity shops on Monday 12 April.
“It was a huge relief to see the roadmap out of the cycle of lockdowns and we hope that progress continues as expected. Our shops are such an important part of how we generate income to fund hospice care and the seven months of enforced closures has played a huge part in the £1,000,000 income deficit we are facing as a Charity,” says Lily Caswell, Head of Retail.

HS2 update HS2: The Future
Your Parish Council is working to get the best HS2 mitigation it can for Wendover. We will continue to do this but we also see an important role for the WPC into the future. We’ll be there, helping the community get through the building of HS2. We’ll also be encouraging all of the regulators to keep this project firmly in order. Annoyingly WPC has been denied any place in the HS2 Schedule 17 (S17) planning process. We will not be allowed to fulfil our usual planning role as Statutory Consultees. Buckinghamshire Council are saying no to our involvement while the Minister for HS2 seems to think consultation is still possible. If BC are right there will be no opportunity for the community's voice to influence the S17 planning applications.
It’s a Burden HS2 gives Buckinghamshire Council a really big job. Not only must they act as the LPA, using the limited powers that Parliament left them with, but they must also ensure that HS2/EKFB stick to the laws of the land when it comes to Highways, Environment and Construction Safety. In addition to all of that they are expected to ensure that the project follows its own set of rules. They were published and presented to Parliament and they became part of the High Speed Rail Act. A Burden Shared BC were not given an adequate budget to undertake this policing role. Without doubt BC will need every one of us to help. Reporting HS2’s faults and misdemeanours will probably fall to the community. Below I’ve outlined the channels that you can use to find out about HS2 or to register a complaint about the construction. The Parish Council is there to help you but its vitally important that we all use the HS2/EKFB/BC systems. These public access points are audited and numbers of complaints should trigger remedial action.

I have had my grass cutting Rota sent to me so Spring must be on the way. I think I mentioned last Autumn that the local rooks had made rather a mess of the green looking for leatherjackets but our splendid green keeper assures me that it looks in good order now. He had heard of one club that had trouble with foxes digging holes in their green. My suggestion that they could leave them in place and play round them rather like bunkers on a golf course met with a cool response. Pity really, it might have been the start of a whole new game.

I live in Gt Missenden and since lockdown myself and 3 partners have started a new business. We have a commercial kitchen in High Wycombe and are an online business selling a weight loss plan and delivering it to people's doors. We have clients in Devon and Dorset as well as locally. Our food boxes are filled with all fresh ingredients, all portioned out so people can't overindulge and there's no need to shop as we provide everything needed for a week's worth of meals. The most important thing is that this diet is extremely beneficial for people suffering with Type 2 Diabetes. After years of research, scientists at Newcastle & Glasgow Unis with Diabetes UK have found something that can help people lose weight fast and reduces high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. This can result in people putting their diabetes into remission.
the possibilities of (as he says) 'reversing' Type 2 Diabetes. He worked with Prof Mike Lean, Professor of Human Nutrition at Glasgow University and they received funding for a research programme called DiRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial) from Diabetes UK. Dr Michael Mosley wrote a book called the '8 week blood sugar diet'. As a result of this research, Prof Roy Taylor has also written a book called 'Life without Diabetes'. Michael Mosley's book has a foreword from Prof Taylor in 2015: "Now we have completed careful studies which have shown that people who really want to get rid of their type 2 diabetes can, in just 8 weeks, lose substantial amounts of weight and return blood sugar to normal or near normal. They remain free of diabetes provided they keep the weight off. We have shown that it is possible to reverse a disease that is still widely seen as irreversible."
of bars/shakes or a liquid diet. There were issues with people then returning to normal foods afterwards. Dr Mosley's book instead indicates doing the same thing to put T2D into remission by eating real food. Our weight loss plan is exactly that. We deliver all fresh food, portioned out with a meal plan devised by our chef. The plans average about 800 calories a day with a low carbohydrate intake each day too. The food is interesting, with lots of variety and our clients love it! We provide all the food required for a week so no need for shopping. No temptation, no impulse buying and it does work.
We are passionate about getting the message across to people that this doesn't have to be the dangerously progressive illness it was thought to be. It doesn't have to result in strokes, heart attacks, blindness, amputations - but it can! Did you know that in the first wave of Covid deaths, 30% of Dr Roy Taylor is a professor at Newcastle Prof Taylor's trials involved giving T2Ds 800 people who died had type 2 diabetes? Scary. HS2 and Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club (WCC) is, like many other businesses, organisations and residents in Wendover, directly and adversely affected by HS2. In our case at least we have the promise of having something to show for our pain when it eventually comes to fruition.

So what are Bucks Council planning emissions by 75% based on 1990 emission levels. This however only equates to a 50% to do about climate change? In 2020 Bucks Council declared it would work 'alongside national Government with the objective to achieve net carbon zero for Buckinghamshire as a whole by 2050' and its own operations by 2030 if feasible.
Bill Chapple, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change, presented the new Strategy to the full Council last month. Some ways in which they plan to reduce emissions are to: • Explore the potential for renewable energy generation projects on the council’s land, for example, developing a solar farm). • Ensure council new buildings are as low carbon as possible • Conduct feasibility studies for the installation of solar car ports at appropriate parking sites • Enhance and support sustainable tree management practices, aiming to plant over 500,000 trees.
reduction based on more recent 2018/9 emissions. The Council wants to work in partnership with local residents and community organisations to reduce carbon emissions, providing help and funding through local Community Boards. Whilst it is pleasing to see the Climate Strategy we would like the actions listed to quickly become more specific and with measurable results. We also know, as do Bucks Council, that they need to work a lot faster than 2050 to reach ‘net zero’. Climate Action Wendover has spent the last year mapping out potential ways for our community to lower our carbon emissions and we believe from our data a 75% reduction is feasible by 2030 if we all work together. More to follow on this.
If you have time, please read the Bucks Council strategy on their website, and do take the opportunity in this election year to question Their interim target for 2030 is to reduce your Bucks Councillors about the details.

Tribute: Liz Youens, MBE Wendover News featured Liz Youens in Jan 2021 to honour her MBE. This followed on from her original Local Face in Oct 2011. There has been a huge outpouring of grief since she died most unexpectedly in Feb 2021. Jane Dunkley, neighbour to Liz for over 50 years writes: My lovely friend little Lizzie and her husband Dick were the most lovely neighbours and always there for advice and help. We are a close community, so we are all very upset. Lizzie tended her large garden all by herself and decorating the fence opposite with fantastic floral hanging baskets, all grown from seed, supplying tomato and cucumber plants every year and trying strange new wonders like auberginetatoes. Always a doglover, after Dick died, they became her life. When lockdown happened she no longer attended dog classes or out at 5.30am to the pool as she had every day for so many years. She came in a bubble with us and I saw her most days. She was also an amazing knitter by hand and machine zipping back and forth at a rate of knots and churning out the most fabulous clothes which used to hang on a rail just like in a shop. Fiercely independent and very eco-conscious, Lizzie installed solar panels for water and electricity. Such a pity she isn’t able to get her MBE in person. Pat Lesingham writes: My family and I made so many happy memories over the years with Liz and her family. She helped my husband run the Lifesaving Club at Green Park which led to our families patrolling the Upper Thames at Reading, Wallingford, Marlow and Henley for Thames Rescue Service. We provided crews for special events, especially during the school summer holidays when there was no Lifesaving Club, including

Tribute: Pauline Pope Pauline Pope, a well-loved maths teacher, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday 2 March 2021 at Wycombe Hospital. She had taught Mathematics for around 45 years across various schools in the country including John Colet School from 2003-2017. Towards the end she was doing supply and 1-2-1 tuition. Double bereavement to brain tumours leads to high profile charity appointment Brain Tumour Research, based in Milton Keynes, has appointed a new Director of Fundraising and Supporter Care. Jason Rigby, 50, from Hungerford, Berkshire, joined the organisation in March as Brain Tumour Awareness Month gets underway. Previously Director of Fundraising and Communications with Children with Cancer UK, Jason also has extensive experience in the commercial sector including at Mitie, Carphone Warehouse and Vodafone. Jason has very personal reasons to join the fight to find a cure for brain tumours. He has experienced the double tragedy of losing his father and brother to glioblastoma, an aggressive and inoperable form of the disease. “We all go through tragedy but I feel that this appointment gives me the opportunity of a lifetime to turn my experience into something positive and to make a difference to a cause that is so dear to my heart,” said Jason.

Jason’s father Andrew Gardner died in June 2019 at the age of 73. He left a wife Pat, with whom he ran an upmarket clothes shop in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, for many years. Some 30 years earlier Patrick, Jason’s only sibling, was just 17 when he passed away having undergone surgery and treatment.
others who have been touched by this cruel disease.”
Jason added: “I was 19 when Patrick died. He was the quiet, intelligent one and I was the older brother who was always looking out for him. I can remember being called to the hospital where he was lying with a tube helping him to breathe. When he died, there was a sense of relief that his suffering was over.
Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK singularly focused on finding a cure for brain tumours through campaigning for an increase in the national investment into research to £35 million per year, while fundraising to create a sustainable network of brain tumour research centres in the UK.
“It seemed almost unbelievable for Dad to be diagnosed with the same type of tumour 30 years later. It’s hard to imagine the pain Mum has been through, having to bury her son and then losing her husband to the same disease when they should have been enjoying their well-earned retirement. Sadly, my family is not alone. Brain tumours are indiscriminate and can affect anyone at any age. I consider myself privileged to be able to work to help other families who have been affected and I look forward to making a difference in memory of my father and my brother and on behalf of the many, many
Chief Executive Sue Farrington Smith MBE said: “Jason joins at a challenging time. Thanks to our loyal supporters and a restructure of the team we remain confident in our ambition to extend our network of Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence in the UK. Our vision is to find a cure for brain tumours and we look forward to getting back on track with our growth strategy while recovering the £1 million which was lost to research because of the pandemic.”

Cpl Craig Baxter-Leggett from Recruit Training Squadron (RTS) took part in a marathon march around the Henderson Parade Square to raise funds and awareness for Combat Stress and Healing Military Minds on 12 March.
Fed up with it going slow? Crashing or Freezing? Strange messages popping up?
During the day he performed many drill checks conducted by Drill Instructors from the Squadron. In the first two hours he had marched almost 7 miles and was on course to complete a marathon distance by the end of the day.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict. Craig said: “This year I took on March in March to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans. I did it to help provide the vital support to ensure veterans get the help and support they need. Thank you to everyone who has supported and donated to the cause.” If you would like to support Cpl Baxter-Leggett, his charitable page can be found here: https://events.combatstress.org.uk/s/650/655/e

Local Face: Matthew Routledge Matthew is a Buckinghamshire boy having been born in High Wycombe and lived in Seer Green. After school, Matthew initially worked for a Merchant Bank but then persuaded his father to let him follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps of working in property, qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor in 1992. Matthew has a great passion for reading, especially history. He also enjoys supporting Wasps though this is not so easy since their move to Coventry. His interest in photography started when he was given a Box Brownie. He was 8 and a photographer friend taught him to develop black & white pictures. He has now moved over to digital photography and loves the flexibility this gives. His pursuit of family genealogy has taken him to the 1500s on his wife’s side and lead miners in Allendale in Northumberland on his own. His main career started looking after property for British Waterways and he then moved into management positions with his patch including the Wendover Arm. To be nearer to work Matthew and family moved here in 2002. He had met Andrea at school when they were 16 and they have now been married for 32 years. When Hannah was born she was baptised and the family Christian commitment strengthened. When they arrived in Wendover within only two days they had joined the congregation at St Mary’s. Matthew became involved in Home Groups and Junior Church and taking groups to Spring Harvest and Youth Camps. He then started leading services and preaching.
Matthew also has a son, Jonathan, and both children went through local schools. Hannah is now a nursery teacher in Brighton. Jonathan has lived in Oregon with his American wife for the past 2 years.
Preaching in St Mary’s
Before he arrived in Wendover, Matthew had been asked if he thought he had a vocation but he dismissed the idea. By 2006 Matthew had become a visiting lecturer (6 weeks a year) at Warwick University which is where he had done his Masters in Engineering Management. In 2007 he had moved on to CBRE which was “named a World’s Most Ethical Company” for the seventh year in a row in 2020. This led to a lot of international work, especially in the tech sector, finding offices for companies such as Google in the UK and across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia. The work was very interesting but not fully satisfying. There had to be more to it than just making money. In a general conversation with Rev Peter Louis about 3½ years ago, the subject of vocation came up again. Matthew was in St Mary’s one Sunday morning, praying about the idea of vocation, when Paul Moring stood up to speak about that very topic. Matthew paid full attention. He hadn’t even realised that it was vocations Sunday. It was

time to explore this idea more formally so he spoke to Vicar Sally Moring who referred him to the Deanery Vocations Advisor, Rev David Wales in nearby Weston Turville. The rigorous process had begun. Matthew had a series of meetings with Caroline, Diocesan Director of Ordinands, to explore his vocation. He also had to write essays and visit different churches to widen his experience of the Church of England. In 2018 he left CBRE and in February 2019 was appointed chaplain (2 days a week) to the MHA Care Home in Aylesbury whose ethos is caring for the spiritual needs of their residents as well as mind and body. Nominally Methodist, the residents include a range of people of different ages including young people with debilitating illness or life-changing accident and a range of faiths including none, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish. In June 2019 Matthew attended a 3-day Session in Ely organised by the Bishops’ Advisors’ Panel (BAP). This was a group of people exploring if vocation really was the right way forward. Matthew found it a very positive experience and he was recommended for training at Ripon College near Oxford which involves weekly evening classes, weekends and an Easter School to support distance learning, a BA qualifiation and ordination as Deacon in Summer 2022 in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. Matthew will then start his curacy for another period of at least 3 years to ensure a breadth of experience during which he expects to be ordained priest (2023). He should be deployable in his own right by summer 2025. If practical, he will stay living in Wendover, otherwise we will have to wish him well in a new place.

Local Elections Are Taking Place On 6 May 2021
If you are passionate about your local community, Wendover Parish needs you. Councillors make a huge difference to the quality of life of our Parish & surrounding villages and to how local issues are dealt with. We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect our communities to put themselves forward for election. With so many things happening in and around the Parish, the Parish Council has much to do to help ensure Wendover remains the vibrant, welcoming & successful market town we all know and love. Perhaps you have innovative ideas for Wendover or concerns about a specific issue and want to do something about it. Maybe a special project, which is close to your heart, which you would like to promote. Being part of a team looking at speeding issues or managing HS2 impacts or improving the outside spaces. Perhaps you simply wish to play a bigger part in your community and help those in need. These, and many more, are all fantastic reasons to put yourself forward to become a Councillor for Wendover Parish.
What Do Councillors Do? Local (parish and town) councils and councillors are passionate about their communities and seek to make a difference by helping improve their residents’ lives, in both small and big ways. Local councils run numerous services, depending on the size of the council. Many you will see day-to-day, but some are less known. These include supporting the setting up of dementia-friendly groups, floral arrangements around the village, creating neighbourhood plans, maintaining streetlights, awarding grants, establishing youth projects, managing allotments and open spaces, maintaining footpaths, public seating, and litter bins. A councillor’s role can include developing strategies and plans for the area, helping with problems and ideas, representing the community, working with other local community groups, reviewing decisions and talking to the community about their needs and what the council is doing.
