Lionel Abel-Smith Trust
The Trust was established in 1977 when Lionel Abel-Smith, Lord of the Manor of Wendover, gave the village a number of properties in Pound Street. His wish was that the rental income be used to support organisations and individuals in Wendover. Over the years, more than £1.5 million has been awarded in grants and loans.
At the time of going to press, we are being warned to stay indoors as much as possible and not mix with others. Infection rates in our area are extremely high and Wendover has many residents who are vulnerable.
Wendover Health Centre is communicating with registered patients via its messaging service concerning the COVID 19 Vaccine. Wendover News website and social media continue to publish updates from Buckinghamshire Council about all aspects of the pandemic, including newly introduced rules and government vaccination centres. The latest government information is always available at www.gov.uk/coronavirus. See also page 24 for news about vaccine scams.
The Trustees will hold their 43rd Annual meeting on Wednesday 28 April 2021 to consider grant applications from individuals and organisations from within the parish of Wendover and the Moor Park Estate. Applications must be received by Friday 28 February with full contact details and, if possible, email address to: clerk@ wendovertrust.org or Clerk to the Trust, 51 Dobbins Lane, Wendover Bucks HP22 6DL. For details go to www.wendovertrust.org. Grants can be made for real need throughout the year. See also advert on page 11.

Before Christmas, they, along with others, revived the tradition of sending physical cards to their correspondents. Now we all have a chance to join in by considering which of our friends and relations might enjoy a Valentine Letter. This does not have to be a syrupy romantic letter but could bring joy to someone who

Wendover Music 2021
‘The experience of creating music in the moment.’ That phrase jumped out at me in a recent online blog from the pianist Steven Osborne. Music in the moment – creating and listening to it live – is a precious shared experience for both the performer and the audience. It’s what we sadly missed last season at Wendover Music when we had to cancel everything. So we are hoping that 2021 will change all that! We had a great line-up ready to go last year and we will be recreating three of the four concerts, beginning on 17 April with Steven Osborne who brings such musical insight to everything he plays - in a recital of works by Debussy and Rachmaninov. Timothy Ridout is only in his mid-20s, but
The London Handel Players will offer us two of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos on 5 June, along with sonatas and concertos by Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi. This is music that they love and have honed over many years to great acclaim – a real feast of Baroque delights! Finally, on 10 July, two stellar young artists and a unique partnership. Ema Nikolovska (mezzo-soprano) and Samuele Telari (accordion) are both prizewinners of the prestigious Young Concert Artists Trust. They began performing together last year and their wide ranging programme includes solo and duo pieces from Bach to Rachmaninov and a selection of cabaret songs.
Sugarcraft Specialist already has a rapidly expanding international Full details of the four concerts and how to solo career. 8. DfT said that EKFB engineers repeatedly confirmed that mining a tunnel past Wendover was dangerous. We asked for confirmation. EKFB cannot confirm that they have provided that advice.
I’ve been reviewing what has been achieved during the last year of the WPC campaign for a tunnel past Wendover. We have with our allies and friends provoked questions in the House, informed Committees of State and challenged the DfT and HS2 Ltd. Here are a few of the highlights...
9. We said that mud on roads from HS2 construction was a safety issue. HS2 said they would put controls in place. Ask residents of Bowood Lane. Mud, damage and trespass but no controls. Hospice to review future services following third lockdown
We were saddened to hear of the death of our founder, Roger Priest. In the eighties, the lack of care for teenagers and young adults, particularly single mums, greatly moved Roger so he and some friends started the Uptown Coffee Bar and Youth Concern. Since plans for HS2 were announced in 2011, members of Bucks Archaeological Society (BAS) have been working first to try to save the deserted village site from destruction, then at a minimum to ensure that there is a full, professional investigation and excavation before bulldozers move in. This work has included: 1. Trace the history of the settlement by research in the county records. 2. Surveys were conducted to look for the foundations of earlier buildings and try to identify the likely site of the mill mentioned in Domesday book. 3. We (BAS) watched plans for the line where it crosses the deserted village site, attempting unsuccessfully to persuade HS2 to minimise the damage. 4. Hydrogeology Update WHS2 have been highlighting for some time the devastating effect of the excavation for the ‘Green Tunnel’ and ‘Cutting’ to the north of Wendover. The excavation will cut through the Coombe Hill aquifer, resulting in irreversible damage to our surrounding environment. The aquifer is charged up in winter and releases water during the summer through our local springs - hydrogeology is the science behind this. HS2’s plan will effectively create a new ditch, with the trains being up to 10m below the groundwater level. At some point later this year, HS2 will start excavating and if the design is not correct, the damage will start.

Help us to do what’s right for Wendover Buckinghamshire Council have the critical role of reviewing the “Schedule 17” design submissions which are due shortly. Based on the lessons learned from Hillingdon Council’s challenge to HS2, our aim is to raise awareness and support the Council with the technical facts and questions needed to challenge the HS2 design.
WHS2 Mitigation – Flooding Solution In the absence of a tunnel underneath the aquifer, (which most acknowledge is the best solution) we need a technical solution which allows the water to continue to cross the railway line, without flooding the track. The solution is in the form of an inverted swimming pool (or tanking) to seal the Green Tunnel and the Cutting.
We are supporting our BC Councillors in taking this up as a priority issue with the BC planning team who will undertake the review, by ensuring they are aware of our local issues. We are very concerned that if Buckinghamshire Council and the EA do not demand adequate mitigation in the EKFB design submission (schedule 17) we will lose the opportunity to protect the reservoir and the canal forever. The expert reports we commissioned in 2013 showed that the springs that feed the Wendover Arm Canal and the Weston Turville Reservoir Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are likely to be starved of water and will be irreparably damaged as a result. The diverted water will flow down Stoke Brook towards Stoke Mandeville and is likely to result in flooding in Aylesbury. The quantities are large, up to 30 million litres a day on average – that’s the equivalent of 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day! For several years, we have been engaged with the Environment Agency (EA), HS2 and their contractors EKFB on this matter. Despite our water level measurements, reports, and the various ground investigations, very little has changed. Planting more trees! Climate Action Wendover is a community group set-up early in 2020 to help mitigate climate change, increase biodiversity and improve recycling. One area of work has been to increase tree cover, working with Wendover Parish Council, St Mary's Church and Buckinghamshire Council to: • Plant trees provided by the Woodland Trust on Hampden Meadow (pictured) • Develop hedgerow planting at the boundaries of the parish churchyard • Nurture native tree saplings provided by local residents for future planting • Submit grant applications for mature planting • Instigate a planting project (*see note below) on London Road beginning the development of a Community Garden in collaboration with local charity Grow to Give.
*Our plans for a community planting event in March will be severely curtailed by the ongoing pandemic – look out for more information nearer the time on what involvement is legally permitted and possible whilst keeping everyone safe. Plenty more planting projects from November onwards! Climate Action Wendover has successfully negotiated with Buckinghamshire Council for a small copse to be planted at their Walnut Tree Meadow site. Increased tree cover will sequester more carbon from the atmosphere, improve habitats for wildlife and reverse the decline in biodiversity. Sensitive planting in parks and verges will provide shade and more pleasant spaces to walk and play. Look out for more projects from Climate Action Wendover during 2021. To get involved or find out more please contact: climateactionwendover@gmail.com.

You Write Environmental Concerns
I read with interest the article headed Buckinghamshire Council News (p26, Wendover News, January 2021) and wonder if other readers are also concerned at the apparent lack of consistency in priorities. Towards the end of the second paragraph it states “The new authority [i.e. Buckinghamshire Council] has declared that environmental issues should be given a very high priority.” Towards the end of the article, the priorities of Wendover Community Board are listed. None of the five bullet points include any environmental issues. The consequence of this is that, unlike neighbouring Community Boards, Wendover CB does not have a working group looking at how to best address environmental concerns in our area. The Community Board’s priorities for 20/21 were set amongst the confusion of the first national lockdown, the establishment of Bucks as a unitary authority and the cancellation of local government elections. Much of the input was from the constituent
Parish Councils, challenged to respond to the consequences of that lockdown. It is unclear what might occur regarding 2021 elections, but I would encourage all residents that, at each and every opportunity to vote, you ask candidates for Parish Councils and for Buckinghamshire Council to clearly state their position on environmental issues and what they will personally champion should they be elected. And please contact your incumbent councillors at parish and Bucks level with your concerns. Let’s hope that when the Wendover CB priorities are refreshed for 21/22, we see a clear commitment to playing our part in tackling the global climate crisis. Our local community group, Climate Action Wendover, is already working collaboratively with Wendover Parish Council and Buckinghamshire Council. Our aim is to reduce Wendover’s carbon footprint, increase local biodiversity and improve our reuse and recycling. We’d be delighted to hear from anyone interested to find out more and get involved in our projects;

Local Walking
We in Wendover have quite rightly, through Wendover News, thanked publicly those to whom we are grateful. I would like to add another to that list: As I walk the adjoining fields taking my exercise during lockdown, I am not alone, as many of us are doing the same thing. The footpaths soon get muddy because there are too many of us, so we have made our own tracks, if only to keep the grass green. It is apparent that the volume of grass for the sheep to graze is reduced by our activity. The farmers have let this happen without complaint, although it affects their livelihood. This letter is to show that it is much appreciated, because any green space is much needed at this present time, we do not seem to be leaving much in the way of litter, which is a good sign. Perhaps we can also return the compliment by shopping local. Neville Morton

Coronavirus Vaccine Scams Around the UK, there are reports of dangerous, fake NHS text messages circulating, telling people that they’re eligible to apply for the COVID-19 vaccine. The link takes you to an extremely convincing fake NHS website that asks for personal details including bank/card details. Buckinghamshire Council’s Trading Standards team are also receiving information that cold calls regarding the vaccine are taking place, where scammers are asking people to pay for the vaccine over the phone. Most of these vaccine scams are targeting elderly residents who receive a cold call to advise that their vaccination would be carried out in their home, and that the caller requires their name, address and also financial details to pay for the vaccine.

Key messages: • The vaccine is free and only available from the NHS who will contact you when it is your turn. • The NHS will NEVER ask you to press a button on your keypad or send a text to confirm you want to receive the vaccine, and NEVER ask for payment or for your bank details.

Last year was a difficult year for all of us in the community. At the Youth Centre throughout the year we focused on providing activities for young people and connecting with the local community through running a pen pal scheme and foodbank donation week. To finish the year, we were invited to run a charity stall at the Wendover local produce market on 19 December. On the stall we promoted our youth activities and sold homemade cakes which were made by the young people who attend the Youth Centre. Young people from the Youth Club volunteered on the stall all morning and ran a guess how many sweets in a jar competition. It was great to be able to interact with the
We would like to thank the Wendover Parish Council, all the young people and families involved in making cakes, the young leaders who volunteered on the stall and the community for buying the cakes and donating towards the Centre. In total we raised just over £100 which is fantastic and will go towards a new sign for the Centre that young people will help design. This year Wendover Youth Centre will continue to work to support the young people and community of Wendover. If you have any questions or queries about the Youth Centre and the activities we run then please email peter@wendoveryouth.co.uk.

Covid Heroes
In order to extend our routes, and the numbers of roads covered, we need volunteers. Our Rotary Club is quite small and not the youngest but we welcome anyone who can match our enthusiasm. If you would like to help with the Santa EcoSleigh in December 2021, please contact cheryl@ monkeypuzzlehighwycombe. co.uk. One or two nights? Great!
Back in September we asked for nominations for your Covid-19 heroes. we have had various lockdown scenarios since then so the deadline has been extended again. Thank you for nominations so far. If you have someone to add to the list, please do so by Sunday 28 February. You will know what this person has been doing but others may not. They may have been just doing their regular job but you will know that they have put to use their own personality and skills to walk the extra mile, making a big difference because of their actions. Their regular job could be being a good neighbour in a truly discreet but caring way. Please give: • your own name • the name of your nominee • an indication of what your named hero has done for an individual or a group of people.
Santa EcoSleigh
Thank you supporters of the Santa EcoSleigh in December. Our outings were curtailed by events but we were able to collect just over £3000 despite some drizzly evenings. This is being distributed back to local charities. Our major charity this year is the Chilterns MS Centre, chilternsmscentre. org/. At this time of year we also support a children's charity and this year it is Pace, thepacecentre.org/.

Report from Bucks Councillors One of the advantages of creating the new Buckinghamshire Council from the old County Council, and the districts is that all information is now available on one website: www. buckinghamshire.gov.uk. Many of you will have taken part in the recent Wendover Parking Review Consultation which involves both the Parish Council and Buckinghamshire Council. So much is going on at the moment that there are always consultations in which you can take part. An important one is the Vale of Aylesbury Plan (see p19) which has reached the “Further Main Modification Consultation” stage; and the Aylesbury Gardenway (see p20), which, although primarily about Aylesbury, will impact on Wendover residents who visit Aylesbury once the whole Garden Town scheme has been implemented.
Every week Councillor Martin Tett, the Leader of the Council, issues an update on Coronavirus in Buckinghamshire which contains lots of useful information. Wendy & Duncan Local Faces: Gray Wendy and Duncan Gray are familiar in the area since 1997. Wendy was Chilterns born and bred at nearby Road Farm, just into the Parish of Great Missenden and remembers caddying for her grandparents at Ellesborough Golf Club as well as Nicholl’s Grocery Store. Duncan is from way north in Whitehaven, Cumbria and they met while working with Emmanuel International’s church community projects in rural Northern Uganda in 1994. Wendy was reappointed to Uganda from Haiti (where she had spent 18 months) helping with health projects, whilst Duncan was there for a year setting up forestry and oxen cultivation in an area prone to looting and food shortage.

He now works supporting young people with various life challenges, especially ASD and learning disabilities, to grow in independence and learn skills, supporting their growth and path forward. The Grays moved “across the border” to the farm near Missenden after Wendy’s father died. Together with Wendy’s farmer brother and others, they set up Road Farm Countryways CIC as a not-for-profit social enterprise to provide special care farming and educational visits, enabling interaction on the farm. They include young people in difficult school circumstances, young adults in assisted living, a “Countrymen’s Club” for retired men with rural connections, provision for those with mobility problems as well as The-Tent-in-the-Orchard for those facing stress and grief. All can gain confidence, skills and motivation through supported involvement. “Farm to fork” cookery has been enjoyed by Scouts and Action4Youth groups, all enjoying Duncan’s informatively fun delivery. More cooking sessions, woodcraft and wildlife wanders are on the plans for 2021!” Their children Nathan (22), Rachel (20), Reuben (17) and Lydia (13) continue to grow and flourish. Although they no longer live in Wendover, they still consider themselves part of the community and share many friendships and common concerns. Do have a look at www.roadfarmcountryways.com and related social media – we can all help each other in different ways.
