Simply Walk has returned!
Simply Walk, funded by Buckinghamshire Council and donations from walkers, is part of a countywide programme of free, volunteer-led walks, which aims to help people get outdoors and be more active. The walks are all sociable and walkers don’t need any special equipment to join in – just a pair of comfortable shoes. Walks run all year, including weekends, and offer a choice of different walk lengths and locations. More information can be found at www.buckscc. gov.uk/simplywalk.
Yarn Poppies
All locally donated crafted poppies adorning the War Memorial have now been stitched to mesh grids and affixed to the railings. Sue Abbott, who has headed up the project, would like to thank Derek Barker for measuring, funding and cutting the grids to size and attaching them. Anyone may add their family/heirloom poppy to the display which will remain up from late October until the first week in January. If you wish to retrieve your own poppy, please do so in time. Otherwise it will be added to the community collection.

Sustainable Shopping in Wendover Budgens Fresh Food
Many people are becoming more concerned about their footprint on the planet so they are looking for ways in which they can buy good things to eat and to use without destroying our wonderful world. Our shopkeepers are thinking along similar lines so it was no surprise to see that Budgens had another refurb so as to offer yet more choice. • Since Friday 25 September, there has been a great selection of loose fresh fruit and vegetables, plastic free, perfect for saving food waste. 45 different products to choose from! • Another new feature - a Refillable Wine Station in partnership with Borough Wines, London. Six varieties of wine, now available for you to try in store! Empty Bottles available for purchase* *Refill prices are per 75cl of wine purchased. For the most revolutionary new line - Grab and Go, Debbie Tompkins was consulted to advise on fresh food aspects of the revamp. Debbie has prepared meals for so many local people over the past 25 years that you’ve probably enjoyed her food at some Wendover event.
In recent months, many people who are used to the vibe of working in town (London to the rest of us) have spent 24/7 in Wendover but are looking for the same variety and interest offered in the Big Smoke. Fortunately, Wendover already has lots of cafés which each offer a unique service and restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world. Now Budgens is able to offer Grab and Go food which is all made instore by trained chefs who prep and wrap from ingredients found on the shelves. It is hoped that students from the Aylesbury College Catering School will bring their cooking knife skills to Wendover. Everything will be freshly prepared and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Debbie was very flattered to be asked to critique and advise and immediately set to work - and she brought a mantra with her –
true, honest, good. She has put her heart and soul into this project and hopes everyone will enjoy the food. This has been her life’s mission.

Debbie has worked tirelessly dropping in samples and tasters to Budgens staff and all her friends. Now she is happy for you to enjoy her endeavours. Hopefully, this fresh range will appeal to those going to and from the gym; needing a welcome break from their home desk; mums on the run; energetic people who have big appetites (those baguettes filled with roast beef etc have to be eaten!). The packaging has been sourced from a local company. It is made sustainably and can be disposed of in recycling bins. Having sourced the best bread and basic ingredients from the shelves of Budgens, Debbie has devised delicious menus to tempt the jaded palate after a morning of WFH. Why not pop down to Budgens to pick up something which will sustain you and leave you feeling good so that you can return home to work having eaten well. The range will be developed and reflect seasonal produce. Balanced food to tempt young children is also envisaged.
Let’s get Wendover eating well.

HS2 - update HS2 & Wendover - the Fight continues . . .
1. Mined Tunnel Everyone agrees the best outcome for Wendover is the mined tunnel, but we are running out of time - once the earthworks commence it ceases to be an option. Very recently, two significant pieces of information have come to light. Andrew Stephenson, Minister of Transport, now accepts that the mined tunnel proposal had not been considered by Parliament, and secondly he has confirmed that the costing method used for the tunnel proposal - Rail Method of Measurement (RMM) - is indeed in use on HS2, so it can be used for comparison purposes. This now gives us the much-needed opportunity to get our mined tunnel proposal considered by Parliament. There is reluctance however to “reopen the act” in order for Parliament to consider our detailed proposal, but it has been confirmed there is a well-used method - a Transport and Works Act Order - for adding and subtracting elements from the HS2 scheme, already used at Calvert and intended to be used at Bromford to make amends to the plans. Therefore we believe there to be a case that this Order can be used for Wendover for the very same reasons. These arguments have been put to Andrew Stephenson and Rob Butler and we await their response. Please help by writing to our local MP Rob Butler to urge him to support us in getting this proposal in front of Parliament : rob.butler.mp@parliament.uk 2. Noise, Traffic & Aquifer There remains a very real threat of flooding from slicing through the Coombe Hill aquifer for a kilometer, with significant damage to the SSSI. At the same time, the noise levels will be above WHO standards threatening over 800 homes in north Wendover. Both of these issues are being aggressively pursued with a pragmatic, cost-effective proposal of a ‘retained cutting’ north of Wendover – this proposal will address both the aquifer and noise issues and the WHS2 and WPC working groups are pushing at every level to ensure these proposals are heard at every level of government.

Meetings continue with the Planning department at Buckinghamshire Council (BC) to discuss schedule 17 and whilst conversations between BC and HS2 are confidential until their submissions are made, once they submit, they will be in the public domain. To aid this process, WHS2 & WPC continue to push for answers to several questions which we rely on BC to put to HS2, as part of their due diligence for schedule 17 preparation. Whilst this is happening, a public survey about noise mitigation options will be out next month - the more people who express a view, the more likely we are to have an impact, so watch this space. Please support us with our social media and email campaigns by volunteering your time and expertise - contact: wendoverhs2@ btinternet.com. 3. Environment Mitigation Translocation of newts at Nash Lee – this is being done sensitively and safely, but sadly it does involve the removal of 800m of hedgerow. Relocation of badger setts at Small Dean Lane & Ellesborough Road – these are underway. Archaeological work - Kings Lane was closed to allow HS2’s contractors to build a temporary compound to support planned archaeological work near Bowood Lane which is ongoing. Clearance of ancient woodland - Jones Hill (Roald Dahl’s) Wood – Many species of bat are present in the wood, including rare and protected roosts, at least three families of badgers, hazel dormice, one active fox den, 40+ species of moth and countless species of insects and pollinators, hundreds of species of trees, flora & fauna which are all under threat. World War 3 was concluded without too much bloodshed with a win for the Wendover Widjets over the Wanderers and Warriors. The traditional final match of the season between teams for the Captain and in Chairman resulted in a narrow win for the Captain by just two out of one hundred and sixty six scoring shots. So that is it for the outdoor season. A gang turned out to put the green to bed and it is now over to the tender mercy of our greenkeepers. It still looks in wonderful condition, despite the ministrations of the rooks looking for lunch, but like all of us it needs a rest. Well, where do we go from here with the indoor season? We will be able to play with severe restrictions on numbers and no interclub games. Also our social life, which is normally such an important part of club activity, will have to hang fire until this wretched virus is beaten. It is such a shame as we enter this festive season in this very strange year but we must all stay safe. We have been lucky and all of us have come through unscathed so far. Sadly some other clubs have not been so fortunate and bowlers whose company we have enjoyed in the past have gone to that great bowling green in the sky. We will miss them. Next time we will have some idea how the indoor season is panning out, meanwhile keep warm and keep safe. Don

We accept far too many immigrants into this country, frankly this is beyond idiocy. Mr KM Local Resident Editor’s reply We are not printing the letter in full as it used language that Wendover News is not comfortable to publish. The letter refers to an article published in the February 2020 print edition of Wendover News to explain why people were fundraising by riding on static bikes outside Budgens on the weekend of Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February. programme in response to the escalating civil war in Syria. The government's reasoning for adopting this programme was so that it could welcome vulnerable refugees in a controlled manner, directly from these camps.
The UK Government provides all official paperwork for the family to reside permanently and work in the UK.
Under the scheme, local communities are encouraged to support resettlement of refugee families in their area. Eligible families are refugees - assessed and selected by the UNHCR and UK officials - who have been forced to leave their country for their own safety. The scheme is not open to asylum seekers or those seeking to migrate for economic reasons.
The family due to be welcomed by WRAP is currently unable to travel to the UK because the scheme has been paused due to coronavirus. Several other countries in Europe have resumed their programmes.
It is the local group that must, for a two-year period, commit to providing housing for the family and to helping them through support and funding raised by the community (via events such as the virtual bike ride, in which hundreds participated) to integrate into life in the UK, arranging English language tuition and supporting them towards employment and self-sufficiency.
91 families have been resettled in the UK by local communities under the scheme since it began in 2016.

Wendover Christmas Carol Trail
carols@wendoverfreechurch.org.uk
A suggestion to help us to enjoy the build up to Christmas: Wendover Christmas Carol Trail.
You will need to label your creation in two ways:
All you need is a window or front garden where you can create your favourite Christmas Carol to share with any passer by.
1. the number assigned to you 2. the title of the Christmas Carol
Set your imagination free to invent your own representation of your favourite Christmas Carol. You can use whatever materials you like. Nowadays, many will want to use simple materials found around the home, even recycling something in an unexpected way! If you'd like your creation to feature in the Trail, please get in touch by emailing carols@ wendoverfreechurch.org.uk before Monday 30 November. A list of all participants will be published revealing the roads (not full addresses) where the displays can be seen. Anyone who wants to follow the trail can receive it by email or collect a paper copy from JUST Shop from Friday 4 December.
Start planning now. Bear in mind that if you have an outdoor display it will need to be weatherproof. We never know what to expect. If it's in a window, take care that curtains can be closed or opened safely if that's what you plan to do. If you have a special reason for choosing the Carol, you may choose to share that. Your display will need to be ready by Friday 11 December and be in place at least until Monday 21 December. That gives people two weekends to follow the trail and enjoy all the Carol displays. An easy to follow trail will be made available so that everyone will be able to enjoy this community activity.

Why not support the vibrant independent businesses in our retail centre which will offer you gifts different from the mass produced items in all the larger retailers online because local small businesses have access to artisinal suppliers with very individual ideas. Many businesses also offer gift vouchers (see Lady Grey advert left) so that the recipients can enjoy what is on offer, an ideal gift for someone relatively local. Local charity celebrates its 35th birthday
The Chilterns MS Centre, which empowers people affected by multiple sclerosis to lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives, celebrated its 35th birthday in September. A lack of local facilities to treat people with multiple sclerosis (MS) led to the charity being born. It started with an oxygen chamber and physiotherapy in 1985 in Princes Risborough. Over the years the Centre has grown, moving to the vicinity of Princess Mary Hospital. It moved to its current location at a purpose-built facility in Princess Mary Gate in 2012. The services that it provides have also grown. Physiotherapy and oxygen continue to be important therapies, but the charity now provides support to over 550 people through a range of holistic services; including occupational therapy, complementary therapies, exercise classes designed for people with MS and nutritional advice. It also offers emotional support through counselling and social groups. It is so much more than a treatment centre and many of its members have made lifelong friends.

This year, the Centre became even more important to its members during lockdown. Many were shielding, unable to receive treatment and isolated from family and friends.

Help to cope with bereavement
Coping with bereavement is a personal thing but having someone to talk to can make a real difference. The Rennie Grove Bereavement Support Line provides this listening ear and offers support when you or your family, friends or colleagues need it. The recent coronavirus crisis has been particularly challenging for those whose loved ones have died. With restrictions on visiting hospitals, care homes or private homes in place, opportunities to say goodbye and be with people at the end have been limited. Helpful methods of acknowledging grief such as funeral and memorial services have also been restricted, making it especially difficult for many to come to terms with their loss. Whether the loss is recent or not, if you or someone you know needs help to cope with bereavement, Rennie Grove’s team of trained staff and volunteers can help. You can call the Bereavement Support Line on 01727 638008 at any time and a member of the team will call back on the next working day. Trained to listen with empathy but without judgement, our team will work with you to find a way to help, signposting you to other forms of support if needed.
Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s Light up a Life goes virtual
Rennie Grove Hospice Care will be holding a virtual Light up a Life service this December to give local people the opportunity to remember loved ones as Christmas approaches. The introduction of the virtual service has come about because its usual annual Light up a Life services held in local communities in Herts and Bucks are unable to go ahead as a result of the pandemic. Television presenter Pam Rhodes, famous for hosting Songs of Praise, will present this non-denominational virtual service on 13 December at 5pm. The video will be hosted on Rennie Grove’s website and shared so that people can join together for the service from the comfort of their own home. “We’re sorry that it won’t be possible to hold our popular local in-person services this year, but we hope that this virtual service will offer everyone some comfort as well as supporting Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s essential work in the community,” said Rennie Grove Head of Family Support, Lisa Makey. The service will include poems read by children, a moment for reflection, and songs performed by solo singer David Mills. There will also be a moment for those watching at home to light a candle in memory of their loved one, and the opportunity to watch the lights being switched on over the Christmas tree.
Lisa Makey, Head of Family Support Services at Rennie Grove explained: “We recognise that different people need different levels of support but it is important that no-one feels alone when coping with bereavement. Sometimes grief can take you by surprise too, popping up many years after someone has died or affecting you more intensely than expected when someone who To help get the most out of a service, families is not especially close dies. and friends can donate and order a Light “Our Bereavement Support Line is there for up a Life pack, which includes an order of everyone, offering support to help you cope service, a candle, a Light up a Life card and a with general grief or specific challenges and silver star that you can use to write a special we hope that local people will use the service message or attach a photo. if they need it and help us spread the word about it to other members of the community. By supporting each other in this way, we hope to ensure that everyone in the local community feels they have someone to turn to.”
You can call the Rennie Grove Bereavement Support Line on 01727 638008 and it is open 24 hours a day for messages. A team member will call back the next working day. Our help and support comes at no cost, however standard local call rates apply. www.wendovernews.co.uk
Rennie Grove has also teamed up with Much Loved, an online memorial charity, to create a special Light up a Life dedication page where people can write down thoughts, upload photos and leave messages in memory of a loved one. To make a dedication, visit www.renniegrove. light-up-a-life.org/2020. Plant a Tree! Tree Planting Season is here!
The contribution of trees to reducing climate change is not limited to tropical rainforests: we need to act locally as well as think globally. Tree planting can play a part in reducing the effects of climate change as well as increasing biodiversity and as we have seen recently, help with the effects of increasingly hot summers. CLAW is working with the Parish Council and with Buckinghamshire Council to increase tree cover in Hampden Meadow and Walnut Tree Meadow. When it comes to trees, it’s as easy as ABC:
A ambience B biodiversity C carbon reduction
public spaces. Low cost native trees and advice are available from the Woodland Trust www.woodlandtrust.org.uk. So, remember the PLAN for trees: P: Personal – plant a tree (or even a few!) in your own garden or land that you own L: Local – green space, verges / street corners. With permission of the landowner/ highway authority A: Arboriculture – “farmed trees”, with landowner commitment N: Net zero – we don’t have enough space locally, but we can “offset” by paying for trees elsewhere in Bucks
With tree planting ‘season’ between November and March, we can all make a difference from now on in both private and

We are now looking at spaces such as verges and street corners where modest but important additional planting is possible. Please help us identify spaces where small scale planting might be suitable – the easiest way for us to track this is using the what3words app (see their website here https:// what3words.com) load this on your mobile device and send us the reference. It identifies a 3m x 3m square, unique in the world – and by the way, emergency services use this to find lost or injured people! If you can’t use the app, then please send very precise location details to climateactionwendover@gmail.com.

Tribute: Gill Andrews 2nd May 1940 – 12th September 2020
Mum was born in Pentre, in the Rhondda Valley, on 2 May 1940 to Sydney and Mair King. She has a younger brother, John. In 1961 she married dad, Glyn Andrews, who was from Cwmparc. They have 3 children, Mark, born in 1962 in Aberystwyth, Jane, born in 1964 in Leeds and Kathryn, born in 1968 in the Rhondda. In 1966 Dad won a Harkness Fellowship to study for an MBA at Stanford University, California, which took our family to the USA for 2 years. Many adventures were had during that time.
In 2019 Mum moved from Hale Road to Dobbins Lane. Sadly, shortly afterwards Mum was diagnosed with cancer. After a brave battle Mum died peacefully, at home, with her 3 children and their partners around her. Gill’s funeral took place on 1 October at St Mary’s Church. Local Face: Ben Glazier Ben is the person behind the #CarryUsThrough postage stamp campaign issued by the Isle of Man Government; so how did a set of stamps for the Isle of Man, and a publicity campaign that seems to have been adopted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, start in Wendover? Ben studied law, then worked in PR and now runs a creative agency in London, creating branding, graphic design and strategic campaigns for global firms including Xerox and Nestle; designing stamps is a pleasant distraction from more commercial work. Ben’s agency is known for the intricate detail they include in projects and this caught the eye of the Isle of Man Government, for whom he has created several issues, including ‘100 years of the RAF’, which was included in RAF Halton’s events. The story behind the Carry Us Through stamps relates to how the Coronavirus Pandemic has changed our lives. On a Saturday evening in March, the GM of Isle of Man Stamps and Coins rang Ben and asked a simple question. “How can we support our Doctors, Nurses and Key Workers with a stamp issue?” Ben spent Sunday thinking about how to thank those who had contributed: nurses, doctors, healthcare workers, paramedics, bus drivers, shop-workers – the list was endless. Was it enough to just say thank you? Ben came up with #CarryUsThrough, a campaign concept that had a distinct aim – get people through this period. It was built around a message of hope that Love, Faith, Care, Compassion, Work, Community, Science and Words will Carry Us Through this crisis and our recovery. Ben had the concept approved and briefed his designers that they were going to create a set of stamps in a day (rather than six months). HM Queen Elizabeth gave Royal Approval in record time and the stamps were sent to every household in the Isle of Man as lockdown started.

In December 1998 Angie had presentation, so not expecting Professor a short working holiday planned in the UK, Hawking to say anything, Ben started to just three months away from the Australian leave. When he gets a chance Ben would like to point out that although to relax, Ben likes to be outside, either on most pictures show him clean shaven, at his allotment or building hives for his bees; the start of lockdown he grew a beard and these are not hobbies shared by his children, said he would shave it off “when things got so they do give him some peace and quiet. back to normal”. The beard is still there.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Where else but as a Parish Councillor can you get such a variety of opportunities to improve our community. We’re still prodding away at HS2 and I’ve had a meeting with Wendover Library to see how we can help them with a bid to fund an extension that will ensure that this much loved community resource remains relevant into the future. The WPC has, with parishioners, instigated three new working groups to investigate how the community, through working with other authorities and partners, can develop solutions to problems that we share. One is to consider play provision, open spaces and the skate park. Another is to look at the Bypass noise and to evaluate whether a 20 MPH speed limit would work for Wendover. The third group stems from the work that WPC did with the village Wardens during lockdown. We discovered that while there is a wide range of support available to those that need it, accessing it is more difficult than it should be. This working group is to look at whether a community led resource could make the process easier. So, there is something for everyone on the cards heading into the winter. Tom Walsh

2021 – Wendover Parking Review Consultation
The pandemic has impacted on all our lives, businesses and working arrangements. This includes the Wendover Parking review which was postponed during March until the team met again on Wednesday 9 September. Taking a positive view, whatever happens with the pandemic going forward, we now have the services in place to ensure the review will continue throughout 2021!
Wendover Produce Market Saturday 21 November, 9am to 1pm Manor Waste concerns are expressive and will enable the team to make pragmatic decisions on which roads should be included. If you have identified a road, please gain the support of your neighbours and wider residents. This increases the credibility of your claim and presents the views of the street which will not be ignored! The consultation period runs from 1 to 30 November and your responses can be emailed to the Clerk at: clerk@ wendover-pc.gov.uk or posted through the letter box at the Clock Tower.
Initial proposals have been made based on known areas of concern around the village and these can be viewed by following this link to our website: www.wendover-pc.gov. uk/parking-consultation. Without doubt, there will be areas not identified and that is where we need your engagement. Please take this opportunity to review the current proposals, comment on them and provide feedback on areas of concern not identified. For the consultation to be productive, whilst individual views are important, collective
It should be noted this is the initial consultation. Over the coming months we will undertake further direct consultations to confirm residents’ proposals. Once we have this information, we will make a formal legal advertisement in the local press and request feedback. The necessary legal orders can then be made, and the new parking lines and signs will be completed in the latter part of 2021. This is your opportunity to assist in addressing the parking concerns around Wendover and your input will be greatly appreciated.
