The refurbishment of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop and their need for more space now means that Wendover News was unable to return to the first floor office within the shop. The shop is due to re-open at the end of June.

Fortunately, Susan Gray, artist, had just vacated her studio in Robert Mews and the landlord was pleased for Wendover News to move in when it was possible to do so. To find us, follow the signs through the archway between the old Lloyds Bank Building (now hosting an antiques dealer and Basfords Jewellers) and First Class Barbers. Re-opening Plans Wendover Swimming Pool Trustees are delighted to hear that so many people are keen for the pool to re-open! As soon as we can meet the revised safety guidelines to our satisfaction, then we will let everyone know, through both the Wendover Swimming Pool and the Wendover News Facebook pages.

The Trustees would like to give particular thanks to Alan Smith, a long standing volunteer. Every day during lockdown, Alan has ensured that the pool water has been kept safe. Preventing the closed pool becoming a hazard to the community is essential work that had to be continued during lockdown. Ironically, the systems we use to keep the water free from bugs mean that the water is a relatively safe place to be at the current time.

As a result of Alan’s efforts, once we are satisfied that it is appropriate to open, then the water will be ready for swimming very soon.

The pool is a Community facility, run by a team of volunteers for the benefit of our Community. Without the generous support of our volunteers (whether maintaining the pool, managing the swim schools who hire the pool or volunteering for the pool safety teams for our public sessions), the pool would not be able to open in the way it currently does. Once we decide to open again, we expect to be asking more of you for help.

It would be wonderful if we could be open for public swimming in the school holidays. One area to tackle will be the cleanliness of the showers, toilets and pool surround. We are likely to ask for volunteers to help with that – maybe parents might be willing to help with cleaning whilst their children swim. See advert page 16.

The coronavirus crisis has made the past few months an extremely challenging time for many local people and I am grateful to each and every constituent who has followed the government’s guidance, no doubt saving countless lives. In recent weeks, we have made a lot of progress and, as we look forward to more opportunities to see family, friends and colleagues, we must continue to stay alert in order to control the virus.

In fact, local businesses have shown great resilience and flexibility throughout this difficult period. A recent trip to Whitewaters Café, No 2 Pound Street, Rumsey's and The Bakers Shop not only left me needing to do some exercise to work off all the delicious food, but also demonstrated how well firms have adapted so they can continue to serve the community and provide jobs for their staff. Traditional prescriptions (FP10s) are being phased out by the NHS, instead nearly all prescriptions will now be processed electronically. The NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a pharmacy of the patient’s choice. Whilst paper prescriptions will continue to be available in special circumstances, from now onwards almost all prescriptions will be processed electronically.

If you are a non-dispensing patient and you do not have a nominated pharmacy, you will be given an EPS token. This looks similar to the usual green FP10, and will still need to be taken to a pharmacy to obtain your medication. The pharmacy will then link the token to the actual prescription. If you have nominated a pharmacy this will ensure that you are able to pick up your prescriptions directly without needing to collect a token from us. Please let us know your nominated pharmacy when you are next in contact with us if you do not already have one.

Appointments

We are moving permanently to a “telephone first” system of appointments. This means that we no longer offer any appointments for pre-booking. If you have a medical problem or concern about yourself or someone who you care for, you should call Reception during our opening hours. Please share with the Receptionist brief details of your concerns so that you can be directed to the best person in the team to help you, and where appropriate a call back will be arranged. Urgent problems will always be dealt with on the same day. Most problems can be managed with a telephone or video call, but where necessary a face to face appointment with a doctor or nurse will be arranged. Anyone entering the Health Centre must wear a face covering.

Opening Hours

Our current opening hours are 8am-6.30pm Monday to Friday. For the time being we will not be open on Saturday mornings nor opening late on Tuesdays. Please only come to the surgery if you have an appointment, or you must collect something from us or deliver to us. For up to date information on changes to our opening hours and the services we offer please visit our website or Facebook page.

Flu vaccination

We are currently working with the CCG to look at how we will deliver our flu vaccinations this year. This will be different to previous years due to the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to maintain social distancing.

Youth Foodbank Donation Week in Wendover During this COVID-19 Pandemic the amount of people accessing the foodbank has increased in our local area. The Chiltern Foodbank, of which Wendover Foodbank is a part, has seen a significant increase in demand. Key partners in the community including Wendover Youth Centre, Wendover Parish Council, Churches Together in Wendover and the Wendover Foodbank worked together to organise the first Foodbank Donation Week in Wendover to address the need for more food donations. The foodbank donation week took place from 25-31 May 2020 and involved the whole community - from volunteers, young people and street wardens collecting food donations from doorsteps to people dropping food donations off at Budgens and the Youth Centre.

During the week young people and volunteers helped to pack the donated food into crates which were then taken to the Chiltern Foodbank in Chesham. Our local MP Rob Butler visited the Youth Centre to find out more about the amazing generoosity and efforts of the community and assisted our volunteers in packing the food into crates.

Over the week 56 crates of food weighing an amazing 683kg was donated by the community!!! According to the Chiltern Foodbank this will be enough to feed 100 people in the system for 3 days. This is a truly fantastic effort, so thank you to everyone to donated food.

A couple of highlights from the week included: 11-Year-old Lillah Alderson created a sign outside her house and encouraged neighbours on her street to donate food to a trolley on her doorstep. Over the whole week she brought up 3 trolleys full of food and helped in the packing of the food.

Will Heaton came up with the idea of a marathon challenge. He ran a mile then challenged his friends and family to run a mile until all the miles added up to reach the marathon distance of 26 miles. From this he raised £26.20 which he then used to buy food to donate to the foodbank. It was great to see these young people put their time into coming up with ways to be a part of the week and help their community. A big thank you to them for their fantastic efforts throughout the week.

Lastly, we would like to thank everyone who has been involved and contributed to the foodbank donation week. It has been amazing to see the whole community come together to help those who are in need! It is a pleasure to be part of such a generous and caring community. We are planning on organising another foodbank donation week later in the year to continue to support the existing need for food donations.

HS2 Having had discussions with Rob Butler, the working group is looking at refreshing the approach to the Mined Tunnel proposal. Rob is not keen to keep pushing the scheme if new elements are not included. We will be stressing the cost of the HS2 scheme and comparing our scheme to it. We will also be focusing on the poor engineering and management performance of HS2. Also, the weakness of the already weak business case post COVID-19.

We are also pursuing a strategy showing that ignoring the Mined Tunnel proposal is an example of poor decision making on financial matters and on engagement. We feel that Wendover cannot be unique and that this casual attitude to good ideas and to saving public money must be being replicated route wide.

Pace are utilising Google Classroom for curriculum-based activities in the school and Microsoft Teams for both educational and therapeutic services.

Pace supports communication, daily living skills, physical development, sensory and emotional wellbeing, through individual teletherapy, group challenges and activities, sharing resources, delivering sensory sessions and stories. There is support on sleep, feeding and play and conduct assessments for Education Health Care Plans, equipment and assessing new families.

Pace are able to support more families through teletherapy and other remote services. If your child therapy provision has been reduced or stopped or if you have concerns over your child’s development and want support but haven’t sought advice because of the pandemic, then get in touch.

It is up to us to take the skills that we have learnt, the hand cleansing, the distancing square dance that we use on walks and the PPE that is available to keep us safe. We must all become safety officers. Not just for ourselves but for our neighbours, because if we are unfocused now, we could be heading back to square one.

Some of our old skills, like driving, crossing the road or using public transport, may need a bit of refreshing after the layoff. Keeping safe takes many forms.

Throughout lockdown this community has pulled together like never before. I am sure that we will continue to do our best to keep each other safe as the easing of restrictions happens. The warden scheme and the safety regimes that our retailers have put in place will continue if you, the community, need them.

Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme

The scheme was established on Friday 27 March with around 50 Street Wardens volunteering their services to support the vulnerable around Wendover. Since then it has gone from strength to strength with a Street Warden allocated to most streets in Wendover supporting the residents with shopping, prescription collections or just a friendly ear. We are now all hopeful restrictions will be gradually lifted for a return to something resembling normality.

Looking to the future, the Parish Council will endeavour to maintain the scheme so that 12

We knew Wendover was a special place to live, but we had no idea that it was filled with so many wonderful people who would be prepared to give their time to look after people they had never met.

Jacky & John B Volunteer Drivers In addition to being a Warden as part of the Good Neighbour Scheme on Princess Mary Gate, where demand for help was far lower than anticipated (which is no bad thing!), I also agreed to take on the role of a volunteer driver, through which I have had the pleasure of meeting up with the Sweeney’s Budgens team (below) – Al (left) and Simeon (right) – to load up the many bags of shopping for delivery to the “shielded or self-isolating“ in Wendover and surrounding villages. It was also great to meet Dary (owner; far right) who fully supports and provides staffing for this valuable service.

It’s been a privilege to be a Street Warden during the current COVID-19 crisis, I have been able to really appreciate what a great place Wendover is to live in, not only do we have a great location but the people are friendly & welcoming. I was nervous at first for the safety and privacy of those of us volunteering but everyone has been really respectful. There has been an outpouring of community spirit with neighbours supporting each other and helping vulnerable people (VP) close to them, making my role easy through setting up group chats for streets, sharing delivery or C&C slots, having a sewing circle for making scrubs for a hospice - and who can forget the communal fish & chip run!

I am grateful every day that I am part of this delightful village where so many people have stepped forward to help and support their neighbours. The Good Neighbour Scheme has enabled me to assist in the magnificent effort to ensure that no-one needs to be afraid that they won’t have food or the medicine that they need and noone needs to be lonely. There is a volunteer warden always available to help, even for the more unusual requests - like the recent urgent call for a cat litter tray!

The Markets Reopen

It has been several weeks since the Thursday and Local Produce Markets closed; however, Thursday 11 June saw the welcome return of the Thursday Market.

This was very much a trial run and not all stalls were available but the intention is to have as great a diversity of stalls as possible to benefit the shoppers of Wendover.

A one-way system has been adopted to ensure the safety of all shoppers and we called on volunteers again to act as Stewards to ensure the public understood the COVID-19 arrangements.

I was delighted that my son, Clark Bearman, utilised his skills as a professional Christmas decorator to brighten our doors with the Rainbow Wreaths - although when he originally donated some to the wardens he

The Thursday Market will now remain open and we are planning to open the Local Produce Market on Saturday 18 July.

Another business which was run off its feet throughout lockdown was our local chemist, Lloyds Pharmacy. The staff were under considerable strain. They had to impose a lunch break for the sake of their own health and wellbeing. The Wardens ensured a smooth flow of prescriptions to the vulnerable and the scheme has worked well. The majority of patients were very understanding and voluntarily queued keeping the mandatory 2 metres distance and no more than two customers in the shop at one time.

Club Corner Wendover Bowls Club

When I wrote the last Bowls Club newsletter we were in strict lockdown. Now,with the agreement of Bowls England, our governing body, we have limited access.

All the usual precautions apply, of course, with social distancing and the use of sanitizer etc, but at least it is a step forward. Sadly the advice from the Government is for the vulnerable and over 70s to stay at home which will preclude a good part of the membership. Still, as time passes, we look forward to further relaxation of the restrictions so us older folk will be able to enjoy the game again.

Throughout this period the green and the Club gardens have come in for a lot of attention and look splendid.

I have found it heartening that club members have been looking out for each other with phone calls and offers of help. We have all been missing the social side of the Club but time will pass and things will get back to normal. Just think how we will be able to bore our grandchildren with our Coronavirus stories!

Beavers County Pirate Camp@home

Scouting carries on despite being unable to meet face to face. On the weekend of 6/7 June 1st Wendover Beaver scouts participated in a Countywide Camp@ home event. The event was coordinated through leaders, the County team and Bucks Scout Radio www.

Before the day a pack of resources was sent to parents with lots of Pirate themed ideas including; choosing a pirate name, how to make a pirate hat and eye patch, ideas for building a camp, how to make a parrot, boat and jolly roger and a menu of pirate food.

Alongside over 700 Beaver scouts from around the County, Wendover Beavers were able to tune into the radio station and follow along with games, music and scheduled events throughout the weekend. The Saturday night finished with a virtual campfire and songs led by a member of the County team. Local leaders held a ‘Zoom’ (virtual) meeting with the children so that they could show their leaders and friends their camps, play a game and join in with a quiz to test their Pirate knowledge. Leaders want to congratulate parents and Beavers on the high standard of the camps and crafts that were on display! On Sunday morning, Beavers joined in with ‘Aaaaarhobics’ and Pirate breakfasts before a closing ceremony mid-morning.

Wendover Cricket Club has trialled a start to junior training, taking on board all of the COVID-19 requirements from the ECB which includes small groups and social distancing. We hope to expand the offer more widely in the coming weeks but catering for large numbers in small groups is challenging. Currently there is no prospect of matches, but the ECB is likely to target resuming junior matches in some format first.

HS2 continues to frustrate, with our latest meeting put back 3 weeks to late June and we are no further forward in knowing their proposed land-take and programme/ timescales, both of which are critical for the club being able to plan ahead. Family Tribute: Ricky Ahmed Our dearest beloved father Dibul Ahmed, also known as Ricky, started his journey in the catering industry by attending a catering school for Indian cooking in Sandhurst in the 1970s. Ricky had opened his first restaurant in Weybridge in 1985 at the age of 18 and then went on to open more restaurants and venture out to many other businesses and never looked back.

an indelible mark that connected forever. Ricky was a vibrant part of the Wendover community for 22 exciting years, and he partnered up with the RAF Catering Training School teaching recruits how to cook Indian food and was even a Parish Councillor in Wendover for a while.

Ricky was a very optimistic person who was full of positive energy and was always up for a good laugh, his charming ways and smiling face are a pleasure to recall.

Throughout his journey he helped and supported many people with their businesses and their personal life. Our father was a convivial person and always loved people hence why he pursued his career in the catering and hospitality industry and created a platform where he was able to do a lot a charity work for the community as well as help individuals raise money for their causes.

Charity work was very close to Ricky’s heart supporting Marie Curie Cancer Research, Wendover Harriers Football Club, Aylesbury Rugby Club and many RAF charities.

This flourishing family business continued to grow with the opening of new restaurants across the UK before arriving in Buckinghamshire and discovering the charm of Wendover. Ricky opened The Raj in Wendover in 1996, the exact year his youngest son was born and he always described The Raj as his little baby.

The buzzing vibe on a Friday and Saturday night at The Raj is just unforgettable. The atmosphere was full of laughter and good energy and this will truly be missed.

Everyone will have their own special memories of our father. For us brothers he was our best friend and mentor, above all he was a gentle, caring and kind father. He was thoughtful and an honest man with strong principles. He had a true gift for communicating and he used it well! Actually, he loved talking to everyone he met and would talk to anyone. It did not matter who they were, it made no difference to him.

Everyone was treated with the same respect.

Throughout the lively years of The Raj, Ricky interacted with thousands of people. Through these interactions, people would meet him only once or many times, but he would always leave

However, this year we faced a much greater tragedy, as, in tears, we watched the most important person in our lives fade away from our life. Our father fought so hard to stay with us, but Coronavirus took him away. The loss of our father is a heavy burden to bear. It will be hard to turn the page, knowing that our beloved father will not be with us in the next chapter of our lives, but we will always remember our father because there will never be another person to replace him in our hearts.

As a family we want to thank you all for the kind messages of support and flowers over the last few weeks. We would like to place on record our heartfelt appreciation to everyone in Wendover who supported our father and The Raj over the years and we shall forever be grateful. In Memory of our father and grandma (Ricky’s mum) we are building a Masjid in Bangladesh for the poor people in the local village, as this is what Ricky would want. The Masjid provides a place for its worshippers to pray and contemplate as well as being a hub for educational programmes and other everyday services. RAF Halton Royal Air Force Halton Support to South Central Ambulance Service During COVID-19 Co-Responders for the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) based at RAF Halton have been busy serving the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Co-Responders not deployed on other duties are carrying out extra shifts in the two Rapid Response cars based at RAF Halton or at other RAF Stations and in the local area to maximise output of all cars. The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) dispatcher is Sgt Sue Berrecloth, who is responsible for the movements and allocations of Double Crewed Ambulances in the North of the region, dispatching ambulances to life threatening emergencies.

The Service has been under an enormous amount of pressure during these unprecedented times. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

Wendover Parish Council continues to be committed to a “business as usual” approach during this time of pandemic. The Clock Tower remains unattended for most of the time; it’s hard to think of a building less suited for staff social distancing than the Clock Tower, but the work of the council goes on. The Thursday market is back. It’s a bit different from the usual bustling free for all but I think it’s a milestone on the path back to normality. Most of the tasks that keep Wendover safe and tidy are being carried out by our grounds team and hanging baskets and flowers are perking up the village centre and the approaches.

Council meetings are taking place on screens rather than face to face and they are no less lively or productive for that. The Council is changing with some members stepping down and new, co-opted, members joining. This kind of change will bring new skills, opinions and thoughts, and so look out for a flurry of ideas being put into practice.

One such idea, from a newish councillor Steve Campbell, is to construct a time capsule with features relating to the COVID-19 crisis. These are momentous times and a community record of where we are now, and where we’ve been, should be of great interest to people in the future. You will no doubt hear much more of this as we ask for community input.

One member leaving the council is Cllr Robert Duggan, the former chairman. As chairman he helped to set the council on the path to be the organisation that it is today. He and I have been friends for thirty odd years, and we joined WPC on the same day ten years ago. Robert will continue to be active in the community, but I and the other councillors shall miss him at council meetings.

The weekly Thursday market returned to Manor Waste on Thursday 11 June, opening at 9am and closing at 3pm. Community safety is paramount, and to establish a safe system of working, only a few traders returned. The Parish Council are reassessing the situation each week and are planning for all the traders to return over time.

A one-way system has been imposed with sanitiser stations positioned at the entry points, and where possible, you are encouraged to use contactless payments. We ask you to follow the set-out guidelines to ensure everyone can shop safely and enjoy the experience. For those who enjoy the monthly Local Produce Market, we are planning to reopen it on Saturday 18 July.

Hampden Pond Update

Wendover Parish council are pleased to confirm the commencement of due diligence activities for the development of the pond into an area where families can meet for picnics, and enjoy the natural environment we endeavour to create, to support wildlife and aquatic plants.

WPC envisage a substantive path suitable for the disabled, areas with picnic tables, additional trees to replace those in trauma, and aquatic

plants to entice a greater variety of wildlife to the pond. A borehole will also be investigated to maintain a suitable water level, so that fish stock and angling can be reintroduced. It is early days and we have a three-year plan to achieve these goals. The community will be engaged throughout the project to ensure we deliver an area which is practical, appealing, and somewhere Wendover residents can enjoy and be proud of!

Wendover Rocks

Wendover Parish Council is supporting an initiative started by a local resident called Wendover Rocks. To show support for the NHS and key workers we are encouraging people to paint rocks and leave them in the area near the flower trough outside the Clock Tower. If there is a good response, we can then think about casting the pebbles in either concrete or a clear resin at a central point in the village. Let’s see how big our collection can grow!
