Spring Makeover for Wendover’s • Telephone calls will still be received using the regular landline number 01296 624270. Florence Shop The Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Wendover Shop team are extremely excited that their Shop is going to get a full refurbishment and brand new look this spring. Wendover is Florence’s flagship shop, but the Charity feels it needs an upgrade after 28 years of shopping, as well as there being some essential maintenance required. The Shop, which is located opposite the Manor Waste on Wendover High Street, will be closed from Wednesday 26th February to the beginning of April while the work is carried out. “We hope that all our Volunteers, customers and donors will be pleased with the result,” says Shop Manager Sue Lee. The other Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Shops will be open as usual – find out more at fnhospice.org.uk/shop-with-us. Wendover News will operate domestically from that time. Anyone needing to meet a member of staff will have to make a formal arrangement using one of these methods of communication: • Email service, via editor@wendovernews. co.uk, will not change.

• Post will be redirected.

The Village Gate

Wendover News has had the information below from the Central Southern Regional Director of CAMRA, Carl Griffin: “I think that the only way to proceed is for the local community in Wendover to form a group to campaign for the pub’s reopening, with contingency for potentially stepping up to purchase the pub if it is put up for sale or redevelopment, and the support of Aylesbury Vale & Wycombe CAMRA.”

editor@wendovernews.co.uk Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop 19 High Street, Wendover HP22 6DX Wendover News, established 1989, is delivered through the door to many local households. If you do not receive one at home and would like to volunteer to deliver for us to your road, please contact the office (see above). Wendover News would like to thank all its willing volunteers.

If you or a group you know would be interested in running the Village Gate as a community pub, please get in touch with Wendover News by email, and we will forward your plans on to CAMRA. Thanks.

HS2 HS2: How are this lot going to deliver that? So, we’ve now had the decision that we didn’t want, and the government has given the go ahead to HS2. It appears that incompetence provides its own reward. This news means that mitigating the impacts that the construction and the operation of this bumbling project is still relevant.

Wendover Parish Council, Planning and HS2. There appears to be a bit of confusion when it comes to HS2 and planning legislation. I’ve tried to clear up any confusion here. The construction phase of HS2 is subject to UK planning legislation.

The bulk of the construction will take place within the geographical limits set out in the High Speed Rail I’ve always said that good people don’t work on bad (London to West Midlands) Bill. The authority for Wendover, will receive applications technical and logistical expertise is weak. The buzz under Schedule 17 of the High Speed Rail (London to that a major project with good leaders gives off is West Midlands) Bill. The officers of the council will completely absent. Further planning applications may be received

from EK/HS2. These will be considered, properly, under the established planning process. These fall into two main categories: • Category 1 is any construction works that fall outside of the limits laid out in the act. • Category 2 is any works that are generated by third parties, not EK/HS2, as a result of HS2. These submissions will appear on the planning authority planning portal and Parish Councils will process them in the usual way. It must be noted that in April the responsibility for planning process is handed to the New Buckinghamshire Council. The WPC Complaint. Way back in October 2018 I wrote to HS2 questioning their adherence to instructions issued by the House of Lords. I challenged them to prove that they were considering innovative solutions (Lord Ahmad called it “good ideas”) to deliver iconic designs that would, in the future, be considered “sympathetic to their local context, environment and social setting”. Anyway, these must have been very hard questions as here we are with a final response from the independent complaints assessor dated February 2020. Pilates in particular has improved the strength in my legs and core and that helps me to sit up, and it’s really helping my back pain as my posture improves. I do some mat work at home but I don’t have any equipment or Rachel there to help me so coming here is really important for me. And the social support and friendships made are priceless. Regular physiotherapy and support can help people with MS to maintain mobility and cope with their symptoms better, helping them to remain independent for longer and live a positive life. One person benefitting from the treatment is Anna, who is 38 and lives in Aylesbury. Anna has been coming to the Centre for a range of treatment and support for her MS. Anna said: “The Chilterns MS Centre offers me so much more than I can access on the NHS. Services I benefit from on a regular basis are physio and Pilates classes, oxygen

The Thriving Communities Fund Panel was unanimous in its decision to award this grant in order to support the Chilterns MS Centre to continue its vital work. They commented: “We recognise the difference the Centre makes to people’s lives and we’re immensely proud to be able to support them. Allowing individuals to live independently is something we’re passionate about.”

Club Corner Wendover Choral Society to Commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s Birth

To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, which is currently being celebrated around the world, Wendover Choral Society will be performing a concert of his music on Saturday 16 May at St Mary’s Church, Wendover at 7.30 pm. The event will provide a unique opportunity to hear a collection of Beethoven’s works which are rarely performed together. It features the ‘Mass in C’, described by critics as a longunderrated masterpiece, and the rousing finale from ‘Fidelio’, the only opera Beethoven ever wrote. The choir will also perform the poignant ‘Trauergesang’, a piece which was played at Beethoven’s funeral in 1827, after his death at the age of just fifty-six. The concert follows WCS’ sell-out performance last December and will once again showcase the talents of young soloists from the Royal Academy of Music and a host of professional musicians, led by renowned conductor and musical director, Peter Bassano.

meet every week in Wendover and surrounding areas

In a 2019 YouGov poll, Beethoven was voted the most popular classical composer of all time, beating Mozart to second place, which indicates the power and resonance his music still holds for modern audiences. Described by fans as ‘masterful’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘inspiring’, Beethoven battled deafness from the age of twenty-six, yet still went on to compose many of his best known masterpieces, including those featured in the concert.

As mentioned previously, the Wendover Youth Centre has a new Lead Youth Worker, Peter Swinford, who has been working at the Centre since January 2020. Below, he has shared his thoughts on the vision for the Centre moving forward: “It is great to be here and the community and young people have been very welcoming. It is fantastic to see that as a Centre we provide a range of opportunities for young people. My vision is to continue this provision and empower our young people by ensuring that the activities are driven by their thoughts and needs. Alongside this, we aim to expand into the community to gain an understanding of what the needs are for the young people of Wendover and then to work within the community and with other partners to ensure we are fulfilling those needs. “I also look forward to continuing and expanding our involvement in local schools and events as well as running our annual WYC Youth Festival in July.”

As mentioned, we will be running our Youth Festival in July. To ensure this year’s festival meets the expectations of our young people, we have developed a survey to give us feedback on what we’ve done in the past. The festival is primarily geared to those young people in school years 5-13, though, you may recall, some of the activities in 2019 were opened up to young people in school years 3 & 4. So, if you are in school years 5-13, or know someone who is, please encourage them to complete the survey by following the link below. Similarly, if you’re a parent of someone who could access the event, please feel free to let us know your thoughts. www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ WYCYouthFestival Finally if you are a local business/ organisation and would like to learn more or explore the possibility of sponsoring or supporting this event financially, or in other ways, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch by emailing peter@ wendoveryouth.co.uk.

Tribute: Anne Elizabeth Holt 28 March 1926 - 21 December 2019

Anne Holt died shortly before Christmas at the age of 93 after a long and busy life, spent almost entirely in and around Aylesbury. In her later years she was a familiar figure in Wendover, particularly at St Anne’s Church, where she played the organ for almost 40 years. Anne was born in 1926 in Prestwood. Her parents both came from North Wales, her father from Conway and her mother from Amlwch on the far corner of Anglesey, where her large family had strong local roots and where Anne spent many happy holidays. Anne began school in Wendover at Lady Margaret’s School off Dobbins Lane and was a founder pupil at Prebendal House in Aylesbury before going to board at St Swithun’s in Winchester. After leaving St Swithun’s, Anne trained as a nursery teacher at the Froebel Institute and returned to Aylesbury in 1946, aged 20, to become headmistress of Fairmile Nursery, off Turnfurlong. Her struggles to keep the pipes and children from freezing during the severe winter of 1947 can still be read in in her distinctive, fluent hand in the school log in the County Archives.

That year Anne also met John, then a solicitor with the County Council, and in 1949 they were married at St Teresa’s, Princes Risborough. A year later Thomas was born, followed by James in 1952.

In accordance with RAF Halton’s commitment to engage with local schools, the Trenchard Museum has hosted a visit from the Wendover CE Junior School. Volunteers hosted the 46 children, assisting their understanding of the history of WW1 by showing them artefacts from the war, explaining their use and enabling them to handle, and where appropriate, use the items concerned.

The children were split into groups and circulated through the exercises. The aim of the visit was also to show the young people some of the tasks and the way of life that children of their age would have endured back then. The first experience of the day was an introduction to WW1 trench warfare followed by getting to know and handle the weapons from the era. Parcel wrapping, first aid bandaging and food to taste including bully beef and apple sauce opened their eyes to the food they may have had. The day finished with toy soldiers to handle. The images show the children taking part in each activity and engrossed in the learning.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

Local Produce Market Saturday 21 March 9am to 1pm Manor Waste

View from the Chair

Wendover is a welcoming and a big-hearted place. The environment defenders opposing HS2’s destructive intentions are finding generous local support. It is good to know that people are prepared to put up with hardship and tempest to highlight environmental injustice. On Saturday 8 February I was involved at the beginning of the WRAP cycle event. I rode a simulated mile on a fiendish “spin” bike, and all without leaving the Manor Waste. Fortunately fitter people than me put in more than the 2500 miles required to travel from Conflict to Community, the distance from Aleppo to Wendover, and in doing so raised over £9000 towards the resettlement of a Syrian refugee family and to help support them as they become part of our village community. The Parish Council grants committee has recently considered applications for financial support from local organisations that are active and important in village life. We take pride in being able to help our community through grants and look forward to the future impact they will bring to Wendover.
