Lionel Abel-Smith Trust
The Trust was established in 1977 when Lionel Abel-Smith, Lord of the Manor of Wendover, gave the village a number of properties in Pound Street. His wish was that the rental income be used to support organisations and individuals in Wendover. Over the years, more than £1.5 million has been awarded in grants and loans. The Trustees will hold their 42nd Annual Meeting on Wednesday 29 April 2020 to consider grant applications from individuals and organisations from within the parish of Wendover and the Moor Park Estate. Applications must be received by Friday 28 February with full contact details and, if possible, email address to: clerk@ wendovertrust.org or Clerk to the Trust, 51 Dobbins Lane, Wendover Bucks HP22 6DL. For details go to www.wendovertrust. org. Grants can be made for real need throughout the year.
The Village Gate
Just before Wendover News went to press for February, the freehold to the Village Gate site went on sale. Full details from everardcole.co.uk.
Youth Concern Aylesbury
On 5 January, 126 local people (and 16 of their dogs) turned out to walk off some of their Christmas (and New Year) cheer whilst raising money for Youth Concern Aylesbury’s Next Step project. The 10k walk, supported by local businesses including Kings Farm, Sweeney’s Budgens (Wendover) and Ashridge Group, took in the Chequers Estate and Coombe Hill, among other sites, and raised £3250 for the project. Well done walkers!

Cough: self-treatment and when to seek help
Making the most of your appointment
Our GP appointments are timed at 12-minute intervals. To make the best use of them please: • Share everything you want to cover at the beginning of the consultation – but be realistic in view of the limited time available. • Describe your symptoms; if your illness has been going on for some time, be clear about the sequence of how it developed. It may be helpful to write this down. • Tell the doctor what you are concerned about and if you have any particular expectations (such as medication, reassurance, investigation or a referral). • If you anticipate the doctor will want to examine you, dress appropriately.
Changes to our opening hours
On Tuesday 11 February and Thursday 19 March 2020, we will be closed for staff training from 1-6.30pm. This space paid for by Wendover Health Centre.

Most coughs are caused by virus infections and get better on their own. Productive coughs do not usually need treatment with antibiotics. Home remedies such as honey and lemon may help. Your local pharmacy can provide advice in managing a cough. Contact us about a cough if: it is very bad or quickly getting worse, you feel very unwell, you have chest pain, you cough up blood, or you are finding it hard to breathe. Also contact us if you have a weakened immune system, for example from chemotherapy, or if your cough is not improving after 3 weeks, especially if you are losing weight or have swollen neck glands. If you have a lung condition such as COPD or bronchiectasis, you should have an agreed plan for managing a worsening cough – if in doubt please arrange an appointment with a nurse or doctor.

Garden Care & Maintenance
Calling all Artists and Makers!
Are you a local artist who would like to sell your work at well organised, well attended events? Sally Evans, a local events organiser, is on the lookout for new talent to showcase at her 2020 Artists and Makers Fairs. Sally started 20 years ago, selling art jewellery. “I became disillusioned with the fairs that I was participating in” she says. “They were either badly organised, in awful venues or full of people selling mass produced tat”. Convinced she could do better, Sally came up with the blueprint for her popular Fairs. “Venues need to be accessible with natural light. Publicity is vital. Quality and range of products is important, and above all,” she says, “participants need to be approachable, talented creators selling their own unique products”.

Sally explains; “I approached local artists exhibiting in ‘open studios’ or exhibitions/shows whose work and people skills ticked the boxes, found a venue and in 2004 held my first Artists and Makers Fair in Butlers Cross”. It was a huge success and as word of mouth spread, new artists put themselves forward for places at her events.

I am delighted to be writing my first column for Wendover News as your local MP. The village played a significant part in my election campaign, and has been high on my agenda in my first weeks in the House of Commons. Needless to say, the main reason has been HS2. I met the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, to raise serious questions about the economic case for the project, and to urge him to save tens of billions of pounds by investing instead in infrastructure projects that will bring greater benefits at a lower cost. If the battle to stop HS2 is ultimately lost, rest assured that my fight to stand up to them on your behalf has only just begun. There are other, more positive, reasons I have been spending time in Wendover. I was very pleased to start the Santa Dash on the Saturday before Christmas, in aid of the Florence Nightingale hospice. And early in the new year I visited Lindengate,
www.wendovernews.co.uk
an extremely impressive project to provide horticulture therapy. As the NHS considers new ways to help patients, including social prescribing, I believe Lindengate provides food for thought. Of course, the majority of my time and work is in Westminster. Many people have asked what it feels like to walk into the chamber for the first time. The truth is a mix of emotions: the palatial setting conveys a solemnity and awe that befits the seriousness of the role, but there was also excitement and anticipation at the prospect of being at the heart of decisionmaking, where there is a real opportunity to work for all my constituents, however they voted.

HS2 Environmental concerns
I’ve been talking to the local Environmental Protesters. Expect activity to grow and to become noticeable in Wendover. The environmental consequences of HS2 are profoundly destructive and will be a scar across the Vale for generations to come. As usual HS2 Ltd are downplaying the damage and trying to make out that they’re building a green paradise railroad. Not much is green about a Bentonite factory in the AONB. Nothing is paradisical about a 16m high ready mix concrete plant nor its output either. Luckily people are seeing through the HS2 nonsense and the truth will out. It appears that there is some strong support for direct action in the local community. The WPC working group has asked for regular meetings with the activists' leadership. This represents a third strand of objection to HS2 and we try to keep in touch with all of them. The WPC has not condoned or encouraged this action. It has not been discussed in council yet.
My view, for what it’s worth, is that this activism is an inevitable consequence of the County and District Councils making no attempt to reflect the wishes of the electorate when it comes to HS2. No attempt to communicate with the people affected and no effective attempt to explain their council's position to their electorate.
Political pressure
New local MP Rob Butler has been active in the HS2 arena. I’m hoping to fix up a meeting with him soon. His recent letter to the Chancellor can be seen at https:// wendovernews.co.uk/news/60091/.
More effort required?
The Leader of Bucks CC, Martin Tett, recognises in his Christmas Message that the biggest challenge to be faced is HS2. The biggest challenges need the biggest effort and perhaps the unitary authority will try harder. It’s a shame that so far BCC support for Wendover’s mined tunnel alternative scheme has been less than
fulsome. Even when it’s the sustainability of the road network that is threatened by HS2’s inconvenient viaduct.
Quo Vadis HS2?
The Oakervee Report still hasn’t emerged but Lord Berkeley has started his challenge to it. His dissenting report https:// documentcloud.adobe.com/link/review? uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3A8e9c 8f87-2650-4aa0-8e0f-0eaf6e709640 is quite scathing about it and many of the news networks have picked up on his findings. I look forward to reading Oakervee when his government backed report is finally released.
An opportunity to do some good.
I’ve not had a response to my proposal that HS2/EK cover the cost of moving the Memorial Wood. We haven’t heard from AVDC about using Walnut Tree Meadow as an alternate memorial site either, but we plough on. Tom Walsh

Cycle from Aleppo to Wendover WRAP Ride - from Conflict to Community - join us in welcoming a Syrian family to Wendover! You may have heard that a group of Wendover residents - all volunteers - have been working hard to prepare for the arrival of a Syrian refugee family to our community. We hope the family will be arriving before Easter. Wendover Refugee Assistance Project (“WRAP”) is supported by the Government’s Community Sponsorship scheme and we are working with CitizensUK, a registered charity. We have the backing of the Home Office, AVDC, and the local police. One of our tasks is to raise money to pay for the family’s resettlement. Through the massive generosity of Wendover people, we have a house for the family to rent for the first couple of years and offers of furniture and other necessary goods. We have already received generous donations from The Lionel Abel Smith Trust, St Mary’s
Church and several local businesses and now we are arranging a community event to raise money, in particular for the English language tuition and skills training that will help the family to become self-supporting.

Maybe you, like me, struggle to fit together all the jigsaw pieces of the puzzle that is Climate Change: there are so many interlinked issues, choices to make, risks that you might make things worse rather than better – if so, I highly recommend this book, There is No Planet B. It looks at all aspects of life and how we choose to live it – food / energy / travel & transport / money / work / technology, underpinned by the fundamental values that we adhere to. I hope you find it helpful. Volunteers Needed! As trailed in January’s edition of Wendover News, we are forming a group under the banner of Climate Action Wendover; we need volunteers who are prepared to bring passion, energy and enthusiasm to get things done – who are prepared to respond in a way that recognises this for the emergency that it is. Expertise and skills are welcome – but definitely not essential. We need to do some research, learn from others and get on with it! Learning
ourselves and then teaching and encouraging our families, friends and neighbours. Ideas already being discussed include; • Tree planting • Car share scheme • Alternative energy technology • Vegetable based cookery • Improved recycling • Campaigning locally and nationally We see these volunteers forming a “core team” who will act as examples to others; leading workshops, organising campaigns, running rotas, being communication champions, generating social media publicity, identifying areas for tree planting, etc. Could this be you?? If you are interested to find out more and see how you could be involved, then please attend an open meeting on Tuesday 18 February, 7.30pm, St. Mary’s Church Centre, Church Lane, HP22 6NL. They may suffer alone because they are afraid of the stigma associated with mental health. This time the dance was open to all members of the local community, people living with dementia and their carers. Club Corner Wendover Twinning Association
Wendover Twinning Association will be playing host at the end of next May to a number of committed Anglophiles from Liffré, our twin town in Brittany, and we would love to hear from anyone who would like to host during the weekend and participate in the events that we are currently planning. Our guests will arrive on Saturday 30 May and leave on the morning of Monday 1 June, so the visit is a short one. There will be plenty of back-up for anyone nervous about hosting, and you really don’t need to speak French. Many of our Liffréen friends speak English (even if not fluently) and there are always Association members who can help out. In spite of all the bad feeling that the press is determined to whip up between England and Europe, our Liffréen friends love coming here: many come year after year and it’s pleasing to note that any new visitors who arrive very apprehensive about what Wendover (and England in general) has in store for them leave loving what they have seen and determined to come back at the earliest opportunity.

I look forward to seeing you soon! Wendover Junior Football Club (WJFC) Sabina Dye, www.happywellyoga.com Over the last few seasons WJFC have re-kitted out all our teams with new match kit and training tops Wendover Bowls Club The social side of the Club was very much to the provided by Admiral. In doing so we collected in fore as the year drew to a close. There was not all old kit and decided to look for opportunities to much bowling activity as we all braced ourselves put this to good use. for the festivities, on the other hand there were two parties in a week at the end of the month. The first was the Christmas party, well attended by almost sixty members. Sadly I was not able to make it but am told it was a lovely evening. I did make the New Year’s Eve event. Any party which starts with a nice glass of mulled wine is off on the right foot in my opinion. Belinda Horn and her team provided a good selection for the first course and several members had been asked to provide puddings, each chef had to stand behind his or her own pudding and serve it. As they were all lovely (the puddings!!) there was no embarrassment. Then came the games overseen by Belinda. The Scottish dancing could be described best as shambolic while the team games were only chaotic. Another game involved the construction of a reindeer drawn sledge using two pipe cleaners, some card, a bit of wool and sellotape. Straight out of Blue Peter!! As midnight drew near we formed a circle for Auld
Lord’s Taverners is a charity which is primarily focused on improving youth and disabled access to sport. Through investment in facilities and equipment, the charity focuses on creating opportunities for access to sport and recreation facilities. Their sports kit recycling programme helps young people, both in the UK and abroad, to access equipment. Lack of access to the correct kit or equipment is one of the biggest barriers preventing children playing sport. If you have any old WJFC kit lying in cupboards or at the back of the wardrobe we would be delighted to receive this for our next donation to the Lord’s Taverners. Items can be returned to the Club at the Clubhouse (next to Little Acorns) on the Wendover schools’ campus on a Saturday morning (and why not buy a cup of tea or coffee whilst you’re there). Alternatively, you can contact our Chairman, Robert Dalby at robert.dalby2@ ntlworld.com to arrange collection.

Tribute: John Thompson Some people just can’t help making a difference in our lives by simply being who they are. They make the world a little brighter, a little warmer, a little gentler and when they are gone we realise how lucky we are to have known them. Benjamin ‘John’ Thompson was born on the 23rd November 1943 in Narbeth, Pembrokeshire. John and his four brothers, brought up on a farm on the coast of west Wales, speaking Welsh, with English being his second language taught at school. Having seen his older brother join the police force, John new his future also lay in uniform. At the age of 15, having received an acceptance note from the RAF to become a boy entrant, he set off to Fishguard train station in 1959 destined to RAF Hereford. He loved his sports and became a boxer and never lost a fight! But he adored football and became a football referee. John met Helen, a Princess Mary’s RAF nurse in 1971 whilst based at Cosford. They were married in 1973 in Scotland and in 1975 their son, Gareth was born. The young family settled in Wendover by the time Lorna was born in 1977. The family was complete with daughter Moira arriving in 1982. John retired from the RAF after 25 years service and the family relocated to their forever home in Bryants Acre. John worked for many years at Askeys as a production supervisor until a change to the shift system was difficult to adjust to with his young family. He then worked for

Leyland DAF and latterly he was a controller in the office at City Sprint where he continued to work until he was 68. John though did not live to work, but very much had his family and his interests at the heart of everything. John played darts all of his adult life and once living in Wendover, he played for the Marquis of Granby pub before playing for the British Legion. John was Chairman of the Wendover darts league for over 20 years. Helen and John enjoyed spending time at their allotment. John, more for the social side. He was a great story teller, and throughout his life people loved to hear his tales being told in his Welsh accent. John would continue refereeing semiprofessional clubs, mainly within the Spartan South Midlands league where he was an active member and became a match official assessor following his first kidney transplant nearly 13 years ago. John could organise things really well. He became Chairman of the the Wendover British Legion club and the Branch, breathing new life into its activities and support for the Wendover Poppy Appeal. John was responsible for raising over £100,000 during his 20-year tenure.
11+ COURSES
Health issues never stopped John from having a loving relationship with his grandchildren Max, Romy and Bella. They called him Datcu which means Grandad in Welsh. Their bond was so strong and he thought the world of them and would talk about their exploits to anyone and everyone! John had a natural knack of striking up conversation, making people feel at ease and took a real interest in other people. Due to his Poly-Cystic Kidney disease issues compounded in the last few years but John never complained. He did not have a negative bone in his body. John received his second transplant in June 2019. Due to acute infections he spent many weeks on Wytham ward at the Churchill hospital in Oxford which is where he passed away on the 16th of December 2019, at the age of 76. Kind donations are going equally to The Wendover Poppy Appeal and the Wytham Ward Kidney fund in memory of John. The family would like to thank the staff at the hospital for the incredible care and support they gave to John and the family. They showed amazing compassion and humanity; and truly are special people.

Tribute: Fiona Poole Fiona was a familiar sight in Wendover bombing up and down the High Street in her motorised wheelchair and sitting outside Crumbs. She was born in Stockton-on-Tees in 1935. Fiona spent much of the war in Scotland, which instilled in her a lifelong love of her Scottish family and heritage. In 1968, after qualifying as a teacher and living in Bedford, she moved to Wendover with her husband Eric and 4 small children and she threw herself into the life of the community for the next 52 years. Fiona wrote a piece entitled “Friendly Wendover’ for the Bucks Village Book in which she recalled realising how friendly Wendover was going to be on the night they moved in, when 3 elderly people bundled up against the cold, appeared on the doorstep to invite the whole family for supper – an offer that was declined because it was bath time. Fiona was reception class teacher at a number of local schools including Wendover and Halton infants. She has been described as a dedicated and inspiring teacher, firm but kind. There are so many pupils, now adults, who remember her fondly. The Women’s Institute had become an important part of Fiona’s life when she lived in Bedford, where she found friendliness, care and support - she wanted the same for Wendover. She canvassed interest by standing at the school
The WI was incredibly important to Fiona. In her words, ‘it is a caring friendly and approachable organisation. I would have been lost without their support through the years’. In their words, ‘she was the WI’.
gate giving out leaflets and after much planning Wendover Evening WI was born. She was founder president, then president again in the 1980s and more recently 2000 and 2001. She was great supporter of things and people at a local level, particularly other smaller neighbouring WIs. One of her treasured memories was being in the Royal Albert Hall surrounded by WI ladies from all over the country singing Jerusalem at their AGM - which she described as ‘an awesome experience.’ Fiona, dressed as the Queen, led the WI twice in ‘Wendover Celebrates’ parades in her wheelchair. In the WI centenary year, a scroll made its way round the county using various forms of transport - when Fiona discovered that there was no wheelchair involvement she intervened and ended up representing wheelchair users in the relay by parading around Wyevale Garden Centre. The photo shows her getting stuck into ‘Clean for the Queen’ in 2016.

Fiona loved Wendover. She supported many local organisations, in particular, she was a huge advocate of the Wendover Community Library – in recent years selling charity Christmas cards there, which she was very good at as she knew most of the people coming through the door. Wendover Dementia Alliance and Lindengate were also close to her heart. She was a campaigner, when the Heron Path became impassable for her wheelchair, due to tree roots, she wrote to, and badgered everyone she could think of until it was resurfaced. Fiona was always seeking new challenges. Travelling around the USA alone on Greyhound buses, gaining her day skipper sailing licence, taking a balloon ride to celebrate her 60th birthday and passing her advanced driving test when she was 70. She was also a talented handicrafter and gardener. Fiona was a remarkable lady who touched the lives of many people. A real character who had a tremendous sense of fun, and who greeted everyone with open arms and a beaming smile. She supported Wendover and Wendover supported her. She will be greatly missed.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Following recent events, I’d be surprised if any of you are thinking “what we really need is an election”. Well the bad news is I’m afraid there’s going to be one on 7 May. The good news is it’s about the important stuff, the local stuff that you see, the local stuff that you can influence. County and Parish stuff. The biggest upheaval in County and District politics since 1974 comes to fruition in April. The unitary authority for Buckinghamshire consigns Buckinghamshire County Council and the four District Councils to the dusty pages of history. The new organisation promises significant efficiencies and a much more locally focused operation. Fingers crossed then. So, 7 May sees the first chance for you to elect councillors to this new body. They’ll serve until 2025.
