Christmas Celebration 4 December

8 & 15 December

The greatest gift at Christmas

Christmas is the commemorative season of the holy birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, three wise men, Balthasar, Melchior and Caspar laid down for us the beginning of a custom. The gifts that they gave to our Lord were Gold for Kingship, Frankincense a sweet perfume for prayer life and Myrrh a bitter herb, for his anointing at death. Each gift is highly symbolic in the meaning of our Lord’s earthly life and purpose. In our own giving as well, generally, we try hard to find useful, meaningful gifts for the ones whom we love and cherish.

Gift giving for family and friends is not confined to Christmas morning, however. The gifts we give others who work for us, serve us, or help us in any other way for example, were given mainly on Boxing Day. A lot has changed, though Christmas gift giving is still one of the ways of joyously celebrating the holy birthday of our Blessed Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Where a Christmas tree is set up, Christmas gifts are usually arranged neatly under it. Christmas greeting cards are displayed at home but electronic cards mean this practice is reducing. Many modern cards do not even mention Jesus Christ preferring the less specific Seasons Greetings. What is the Christmas giftSt Anne’s Church, The tradition of giving gifts giving season like in other parts of the Aylesbury Road to children follows the world in 2019? example of St Nicholas, popularly known as Santa Claus or Father Christmas. Now gifts As we think of this, let us remind one are given by all who can. Gifts are often mailed another also of the very first Christmas, near and far with hope that they are received when Jesus Christ was given to save us. He is in time for Christmas celebrations. Gifts may the greatest gift given to you and the world. take any form including hampers depending Fr Jude Iroh on how thoughts and creativity allow. RC Priest for Bedgrove and Wendover

She has given the first performances of scores by, among others, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sally Beamish, Gordon Crosse, Cheryl FrancesHoad, Adrian Sutton and Piers Hellawell, and made the world premiere recording of Christopher Wright’s elegiac Violin Concerto.

Fenella will be leading Equale Baroque Soloists in a performance of Handel’s triumphant ‘Coronation Anthems’ and Vivaldi’s transcendent ‘Gloria’ and ‘The Four Seasons’, under the expert guidance of conductor and music director, Peter Bassano. The ‘Anthems’ will include the stupendous ‘Zadok the Priest’, performed at the coronation of every British monarch since 1727. As in previous years, the choir will be joined by young soloists from the Royal Academy of Music, just beginning their careers in the world of classical music. Don’t miss this unique chance to hear virtuoso performances from leading musical artists in what promises to be a truly exciting evening. Tickets at £15 and £5.00 (under 16s) from Just, 11 High Street, Wendover, HP22 6DU or wendoverchoralsociety@gmail.com.

Community Wendover Music Season Tickets

Just in time for Christmas, Wendover Music announces its programme for 2020, see advert page 4, so why not give a season ticket to friends or family for Christmas and guarantee them wonderful music performed by top artists in the perfect acoustics and setting of St Mary’s Church. No need to trek into London for the very best music! Wendover Music have made some improvements to the benefits for season ticket holders. Not only does the price include a ticket for the AGM concert on 14 March but also the opportunity to sit in an area of reserved seating at the front of the Nave on a first come first served basis. Do arrive in good time as the stewards will release the reserved area at 7.15. Also if notified in advance the stewards will hold seats for small young people and their family and friends so that they can see the performers. The stewards will always make room for wheelchair users - it really helps if advance notice is given so the necessary space can be created with enough seats adjoining for family and friends. Young people and wheelchair seats will be held until the interval. We look forward to welcoming music lovers to St Mary’s Church in 2020.

Shepherd’s Hut Outdoor Nursery - Fire Brigade Visit

The Shepherd’s Hut Outdoor Nursery in Wendover had the great privilege of being visited by Aylesbury Fire & Rescue Service on 7 November. The team arrived in their fire engine and the children couldn’t believe their eyes! They greeted the firefighters by singing their favourite fire engine song. The firefighters joined us in the nursery and asked the children several questions about what they knew about fire safety. Thank you to Blue Watch!

Poppies on the War Memorial

The book is the first in the Mr. Alphabet's A-Z Academy series. We learn of Mr. Alphabet and his new school and of Abigail Ayres, quite an ordinary looking girl from quite an ordinary looking semi on the outskirts of town, one of the first students to walk through the imposing gates to Mr. Alphabet's A-Z Academy. She and her friends, Govinder Gohil and Robbie Redovitch, are desperate to go to the school, desperate to follow their dreams. Will they get in? Will they uncover the mystery of the seeds? Will they find out where all the money came from? And, more to the point, who on earth IS Mr. Alphabet?

Ahead of Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games in August next year, WheelPower will be offering children the opportunity to take part in the Wheelchair Relay Challenge, based on the former Paralympic Sport, Wheelchair Slalom. The fun, sporty challenge offers non-disabled children a taster of disability sports, and what it would be like to compete as an athlete. This challenge is both fun and educational which demonstrates WheelPower’s mission: transforming lives through sport.

Leah Lewis, WheelPower Community Fundraiser, comments: "Our Wheelchair Relay Challenge is a fantastic initiative to encourage our local schools to raise vital funds for WheelPower. Funds raised could support our comprehensive sports programme, introducing disabled children aged 5-18 years to different forms of sport and physical activity. We are looking forward to working with lots of schools this year which will enable WheelPower to continue to transform lives through sport."

From the start, HS2 have insisted that a combination of viaducts and a ’cut and cover’ tunnel method will be used around Wendover. Our professional advisor has consistently pointed out the higher cost of this methodology over a ‘mined’ tunnel and the problems, damage and limitations that it will directly cause. HS2 maintain a ‘tin ear’ to our evidence. HS2 intransigence and failure to fully investigate all possible options has now resulted in three important issues emerging from our discussions with Eiffage Kier (EK), the HS2 contractor

The planned ‘cut and cover’ tunnel will cause problems cutting through the aquifer off of Coombe Hill, cutting the supply of water to the Wendover Arm canal and the Weston Turville reservoir. This is a known problem but EK are unwilling to investigate this further until after ‘notice to proceed’ has been given.

Wendover woofs raise over £2,000 photographed the Muddy Mutts event, and we are delighted that it has gone so well” for lymphoma charity On 20 October, Lymphoma Action held their first ever Muddy Mutts dog walk in Wendover Woods. Over 70 dogs, adults and children took part in the walk that raised over £2,000 for Lymphoma Action, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people affected by lymphoma. The event was also supported by a number of local businesses, including Unique Pets, Pets At Home, Pets Corner and Waitrose who all contributed free dog food and treats, poo bags and water bowls.

Photographer Jonathan Hilder attended the event with his wife Mary and their three dogs Spice, Meg and Willow. Jonathan’s father, Tim Hilder, was one of the founders of Lymphoma Action, along with fellow patients who had also been affected by lymphoma. Jonathan’s mother Felicity also became a trustee of the charity, and was later honoured by the Queen for her work. “It was a pleasure to have attended and

said Jonathan.

Sarah Thorn, Community and Partnerships Manager at Lymphoma Action, added “We’re absolutely thrilled that our first Muddy Mutts charity dog walk was such a success! We would like to thank all of the local businesses who contributed doggy supplies for their support, and of course to everyone who took part for their fantastic fundraising efforts. The money raised will really help us in making sure that no one has to face lymphoma alone.” We are the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people affected by lymphoma. Your support will ensure more families affected by lymphoma receive the best possible information, support and care. With Christmas fast approaching, we have a number of ideas of how you can support us as we head into the festive period. Visit lymphoma-action. org.uk/Christmas for further details!

Wendover Bowls Club

Socially this is a quieter time of year. Inter club and our own internal matches continue, of course, and I’m sure things will hot up towards Christmas. We did have a Quiz evening, however, to allow the members and friends to display their awesome intellects. Sadly for some of us “intellect” should have been substituted with another word, but at the end of the day one table soared into the lead by one point and won six bottles of wine. At the beginning of the month we had the AGM. It was a chance to look back at a pretty successful year. Bowling, like many pastimes, is struggling to compete against so many other attractions. It is good to see that the Club has grown its membership slightly and is in good health. Eric and Ann Smith, our Chairman and Ladies Captain respectively, stepped down after some years hard work and Jill Wheeler decided to hand over the reins after ten years as treasurer. The Club owes them all a great debt of gratitude. Best wishes to their replacements.

Tribute: Judith Hacking Judith Hacking had a great talent for making friends. This started in her early childhood and was honed to perfection as she matured. Judith came to Buckinghamshire in the early 1950s, celebrating her 21st birthday in July 1956 in The Firs at Whitchurch, but she never forgot her Northern roots and enjoyed working in Sheffield for a time. In 1959 Judith’s leisure focus moved to South Buckinghamshire as she enthusiastically joined the Lucy Clark Country Dance Group which was then based in Amersham. By 1960 she was in Ellesborough Road, not far from the Golf Club, another interest, then in 1977 she moved to walking distance from the High Street and became a familiar sight walking her dog, Hamish. Over time she maintained many diverse friendships and had a special relationship into adulthood with the children of the many families she befriended. When Judith left school, a pioneer of “O”levels, her ability with numbers made

accountancy an obvious career choice, even though it was so male dominated at the time that on one course she attended she was the first woman they had had to cater for and they had to seek out special accommodation for her.

was Treasurer for St Mary’s from 1988 to 1996. These associations gave her strong links with many local business people. She was a popular money counter for many organisations including Christian Aid. Judith’s amazing memory for detail and her tiny neat handwriting were prized talents among her many friends both old and new. She was thronged with visitors during her sudden summertime illness.

Judith became the goto accountant for advice as far as many local charitable organisations Judith as bridemaid at her close were concerned. Forestry Commission and RAF Halton Centenary

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary year of the Forestry Commission and RAF Halton, Station personnel and Forestry staff have planted an avenue of 100 lime trees to replace some which were knocked down during the storms of 1987. Wendover Woods was one of six locations in the UK celebrating the centenary. RAF Halton Station Commander, Group Captain Katherine Wilson, PK Khaira-Cresswell, Director of the Centenary Programme, John Bruce, Head of Land Management East England Forest District, Cllr Tom Walsh, Chair of Wendover Parish Council and Cllr Judy Brandis, Chair Aylesbury Vale District Council were all in attendance during the unveiling of the plaque commemorating the planting of 100 trees in unison. Group Captain Wilson said: “I would like to extend thanks to the many individuals that facilitated the planting of the 100 lime trees along the avenue and also for organising the ceremony today. Forestry England, you have done a remarkable job maintaining the vast woods around us and in allowing RAF Halton to share its centenary year with Wendover Woods. I would also like to extend my thanks to the RAF Halton volunteers who spent their Tuesday morning planting the new trees you’ve seen today. Finally, I would like to thank those members of the public who have joined us in this momentous occasion, cementing 100 years of our joint history”. RAF Halton’s Media Communications Officer, Flying Officer Curt Shields, said: “It’s wonderful to have an opportunity to celebrate the joint centenary between our Station and Wendover Woods. Opportunities like this to support our community are something we’ll grasp firmly and the avenue truly looks fantastic.”

Local Face: Siân Chattle Siân grew up in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Her parents were both professional musicians, her father sang in St Paul’s Cathedral choir for 30 years, taking part in both the Queen’s Coronation and Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding. Her two brothers sang in the Chapel Royal and Siân was one of the first women servers (acolyte) in St Paul’s Cathedral. She spent much of her youth singing with professional choirs, including the Guards’ Chapel Choir, where her father was then Director of Music. As well as having a trained voice, Siân taught herself the guitar when she was young and this has played a big part in her future life. Siân became a primary school teacher and married Phil, at the Guards’ Chapel, in 1984. After living in London for a couple of years, they moved to Wendover in 1986. Whilst raising three children (Tom, Michael & Beth), Siân worked in various schools in the area, before joining Wendover CofE Junior School – staying for the next 13 years. Siân has worshipped at St Mary’s for many years, playing her guitar in the music group and singing in the choir. Over the years she has organised school children to take part in Harvest festivals and Christmas carol services and, at one point, ran a children’s orchestra. She serves on the PCC and is now helping St Mary’s to work towards being a dementia-friendly church. While at Wendover Junior School, Siân pioneered the teaching of environmental issues, starting an ‘Eco Club’ and creating a ‘Peace Garden’ on the school grounds. Used by children to discover and experience nature, it consisted of a pond, vegetable

beds, an orchard and wild flowers. Seeing how nature and being outside helped children who were struggling with the academic side of school was wonderful and stayed with Siân. In 2010 Siân joined up with The John Hampden school to plant a native woodland and wildflower meadow, which was opened by Chris Packham.

Siân retired from Lindengate earlier this year. Having introduced the Memory Pathway sessions at Lindengate (run for people living with dementia and their carers) Siân recognised the need for more support in the local community. She helped set-up, and now chairs, the Wendover Dementia Action Alliance, which is the umbrella organisation for ‘all things dementia’ in Wendover. The Alliance runs various local events in the community and has Sir Jackie Stewart as their patron. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

This is my, slightly early, chance to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Council has had a successful 2019 and now we’re getting ready for our Christmas Light Switch On. It’s always one of my favourite events as it gives me an opportunity to meet so many people. It might be wet or cold, or wet and cold, but there is always a warm community feel on the Manor Waste and it can’t all come from the mulled wine. I recently opened an extension to the Witchell carpark. I know that many people feel that Wendover has a parking problem and I’m sure that the extra spaces will be well used. It’s a great place to park if you work in Wendover or if you’re going hiking in the surrounding area. If it works out as planned, it should free up central parking spaces for shoppers. HS2 takes up quite lot of my time, but I’ve still managed to fit in other interests in the community. WRAP is a local organisation that is working to house a refugee family in Wendover. They are making headway through a sea of red tape and it looks very promising. The Community Library is a real Wendover success story. I’m involved in a committee to extend both the premises and the scope of activities available at the library. I’m also keeping up an involvement with the Dementia groups and Lindengate. All of these causes have one thing in common, they are successful because of their volunteers and they all need more volunteers. All of them offer a route to challenges, satisfaction and friendship. So, this Christmas don’t just wonder what to give to charity, why not give them some of your time. Tom Walsh, Chairman of WPC

Recent Updates

If you haven’t got time to review the minutes on our website, here is a quick update on recent resolved decisions: • Hogtrough Lane Allotments – we will be widening the entry point gates and improving the entry surface. • Site Safe – our storage facility at Ashbrook open space is going to be extended to improve storage. • Fences and Gates – the fence along the Heron Path/stream behind the old scout hut is being replaced, along with an entrance gate at Hampden Pond. • White Gates – next year we are hoping to apply for LAF 50/50 funding to replace the white gates at Wendover entry points.

Halloween Drawing Competition

This year WPC ran a new Halloween Drawing Competition where entrants were required to create a Halloween themed picture featuring the Clock Tower, the competition was a hit with 31 entries! The Chairman, Tom Walsh, selected two finalists whose drawings were loaded onto a Facebook poll, where the public had a week to vote for their favourite. The public were asked to keep the finalist’s age in mind and vote based on creativity. The Facebook poll received a whopping total of 1046 Olivia Murphy votes! Congratulations aged 11, winner to the winner - Olivia Murphy, aged 11, who received 568 votes. And well done to the runner up – Lauren Gatley, aged 6, who received Lauren Gatley aged 6, 478 votes. Olivia has won herself 4 x runner up tickets to see Dennis and Gnasher: Unleashed! at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. When Olivia was notified of her winning, she kindly requested the prize be shared with the runner up! What a heart-warming gesture!

Ellesborough Silver Band will be playing your favourite Christmas songs from 11am to noon at the Local Produce Market on Saturday 21 December. Join us for some festive last-minute Christmas shopping! Enter a free raffle to win a hamper if you buy Well done Olivia. anything from one of the market stalls. If you are still feeling the shopping fever, then head down the High Street for a good mooch!
