HS2 Review
(including payments for adverts) book early to avoid disappointment
The front page of the September print edition of Wendover News drew attention to the ongoing worry about the status of the HS2 owned cottages in Ellesborough Road since tenants have been given notice to quit. Wendover News received this reply in answer to a query requesting that all Preparatory Works should be stopped: As part of the recent announcement of the independent review into HS2, the government has made it clear that such Preparatory Works should continue in parallel with the review. We do appreciate the concerns of the local community, and will continue to seek to minimise the impact of our works, as part of our commitment to being a good neighbour to local communities. Nigel Greenidge, www.fusion-jv.com Wendover News understands that HS2 have not yet instructed fusion-jv to get on with the demolition. Ellesborough Road has been identified as a location where “demolition of building will need to occur”.

Local residents are seeking assurances that the Ellesborough Road cottages owned by HS2 will not be demolished until the time comes for work to start on the “green” tunnel. “Project critical works” could be undertaken soon.
Wendover News, established 1989, is delivered through the door to many local households. If you do not receive one at home and would like to volunteer to deliver for us to your road, please contact the office (see above). Wendover News would like to thank all its willing volunteers.
Tom Walsh writes on page 12 of this edition: I recently wrote to Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary and to Mark Thurston CEO of HS2 Ltd asking for the Preparatory Works programme to be stopped until the government decides if it’s Go or No Go on the project. Specifically, that no buildings are to be demolished before the Notice to Proceed is issued. No reply has been received.

Update from Hampden Fields Action Group Autumn update from HFAG
It is now well over a year since the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP) started public examination by the Inspector. Having been years in preparation, one might have expected it to be approved fairly readily. But the latest timetable shows that another stage of public consultation will be needed with a view to final consideration this November. (Please respond when it does!)
A weak plan and strategy mean permanent traffic problems for Wendover and the surrounding area.
Those of a kindly disposition will spare a thought for the traffic planners. It isn’t easy. Traffic modelling is complex, requiring up to date information and skilful processing. Roads are very expensive and nowadays depend on external sources of funds; for BCC and AVDC these include HS2, the Housing Infrastructure We are not surprised at how long this is taking. A Point of View
Recently I heard an episode of ‘A Point of View’ on Radio 4 which touched a nerve in a very personal way. It was written and delivered by Sarah Dunant, a novelist and broadcaster who has spent many years living and working in Florence (now sadly driven out) and this article is unashamedly based on her talk. It is not so much about plastic waste, although that is a very substantial byproduct of the topic but more of a reflection on our lifestyle habits with regard to our planet’s current problems. Mass tourism and its effects. Even as little as 70 years ago only the rich could travel for pleasure but in the 1960’s ELAINE MACWHIRTER global economic development opened up Chartered Physiotherapist unimagined opportunities for travel. malls which most terminals have become. But it is the monster cruises which are killing our great European cities. It was a chilling experience to dock one morning in Venice to find within minutes, 3 monster ships docking behind us. The total number of tourists descending on Venice that morning was probably about 6000! And that is just from the ships! Then the rush for the city, the gondolas, the water taxis, the guided tours........... I had been really excited about seeing Venice but it was one of the most disappointing experiences I have ever had and I couldn’t wait to escape. The same can be said of so many beautiful cities - Florence, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Lisbon.......
There are a few lights twinkling in the darkness. We have the unlikely alliance of David Attenborough with the extraordinary Greta Thunberg (Sarah Dunant describes her as having the appearance of Pippi Longstocking with the commitment of Then came long-distance travel. HS2 Wendover’s efforts to improve the mitigation of HS2’s damaging progress past the village are still heavily overshadowed by Westminster’s addiction to BREXIT. As a result of this difficult situation, it was gratifying how many MPs and Lords have supported our efforts to brief ministers and reviewers. It seems that HS2 has had more reviews than the sequel to A Handmaid's Tale. Currently we are awaiting the outcome of the Oakervee review. Wendover’s documentary briefing went to this committee in August, you can find it on the Wendover Parish Council’s website, and David Lidington MP undertook to raise our case in his meeting with Mr Oakervee.

Lindengate Happy Birthday Lindengate!
Lindengate celebrates its fifth birthday this year. The mental health charity supports people with a wide range of mental health needs, including anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), memory loss and dementia and those who feel their wellbeing could be improved. The caring community has encouraged people to thrive, lead more independent lives, develop work skills and recover their wellbeing. Some Gardeners have become Volunteers at Lindengate to help other people in their recovery. Over five years its volunteers and supporters have transformed the site from overgrown and derelict allotments to beautiful therapeutic garden spaces linked by wildlife areas, which are carefully designed to offer different healing environments and spaces. These outdoor spaces allow the expert staff and trained volunteers to offer its Gardeners (service users) a wide range of activities that are carefully tailored to improve their

wellbeing. The approach is called Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH), which alleviates depression, anxiety and the symptoms of stress by contact with nature and reducing social isolation. Lindengate’s Gardeners and Volunteers work together to explore their creativity in gardening, construction, conservation, cooking, arts and crafts. In September Lindengate held a Garden Party to thank its supporters, a wide range of businesses and individuals, who have enabled Lindengate to improve life for so many people with mental health needs. Chairman of the trustees, Phil Chattle, thanked everyone for their support in creating such a beautiful garden but reminded everyone that to Lindengate’s Gardeners it was much more. Often coming to Lindengate meant they were able to get up in the morning. In the words of one Gardener: “Lindengate’s made my life worth living”. The guest of honour, Polar explorer James Reddon, spoke
to the guests about overcoming his feelings of isolation and self-doubt on expeditions. He said these challenges were insignificant when compared to those people with poor mental health overcame everyday. James announced that he was undertaking a new expedition to the South Pole in aid of Lindengate. There will be more activities celebrating Lindengate’s 5th birthday throughout the year. Details of these and all our events will appear on our website www.lindengate.org. uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/ lindengategardening/.

News from Department for Transport
On 16 September 2019 Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps ordered that removals of ancient woodlands for HS2 be stopped during the independent review into the project - unless they are shown to be absolutely necessary to avoid major cost and schedule impacts should the scheme proceed as planned. The Transport Secretary told HS2 Ltd to assess what removals can be halted until after Doug Oakervee has reported in autumn. Mr Shapps recognised the concerns of local residents and campaigners that clearing of ancient woodlands is irreversible. Murray Stewart, Director Public Policy, DfT This news was posted on Wendover News Facebook as soon as it was received in the office. Any further announcements will also be published online.

As well as dancing to Christmas themed music, there will be the opportunity to sing along to Christmas themed tunes as well. It will be the day after Christmas Jumper Day so another good opportunity to wear any Festive themed clothing. Last year Santa himself appeared and brought some elves with him. Why not get together with friends and make up a little party for a fun afternoon in December? Everyone is very welcome.

At the end of August we held our Finals Day. This is the culmination of all the various knockout competitions that had run throughout the outdoor season for the silverware in our Trophy cabinet and, just as important, the pleasure of seeing your name on the honours board for 2019. It was a long day with matches starting early in the morning through to early evening. Thankfully we were blessed with good weather and they all got completed on time. A pat on the back must go to the organisers who had to cope with the logistical problems of players who were in more than one competition. After the dust had settled we sat down to a splendid meal provided by Ashlea Catering and the presentation of the awards. One real pleasure was to see that our youngest member, Kasey Turton aged 12, had won through to the Final of The Ann Shepherd Cup and, though beaten, she got one of the loudest ovations of the evening. By the time this goes to print our green will have been put to bed and the moth hoovered out of the indoor mats. We will all have to relearn this much gentler format and I’m sure we will find it a bit frustrating at first but, as we have the first match at the end of September, we had better learn fast.
Looking back at the year it has been pretty successful. Our membership has grown and the competition results fair. We may not be quite so “win at all cost” as some clubs but it is usually a happy place to be with a great social side. Come and join us. Don Knight
Wendover Cricket Club
As the season comes to the end, Wendover CC’s main highlight in recent matches was the 1st XI’s game at Ballinger in the Mid Bucks League Division 1. Club batting records were broken as after being put in to bat on a perfect batting pitch, Wendover amassed a record total of 350 for 2 declared off 36 overs. James Wootton broke the record for the highest individual score with 209 off just 111 balls, having struck 28 fours and 8 sixes. In partnership with 14 year old Hector Charlesworth who hit his maiden 1st XI 50 and ended on 71*, they added 272 for the 2nd wicket, a club record for any wicket (- beating the previous one of 266* set in 1992 by Bryn Jones & Richard Shearer, also for the 1st XI and the 2nd wicket. This was only the 3rd 250+ partnership in the club’s history.) Ballinger 2nd’s ended on 191 for 9, giving Wendover victory by 159 runs. Jonathan Seabrook

The second week of September saw nine walkers, including seven from Wendover (Tim Harwood, Ben Hutchings, Richard Jones, Paul Moring, Xenia Murray, Matt Ryan and Ian Sansbury) walk the West Highland Way for Pace, the Aylesbury disability charity that works with children and young people with cerebral palsy. The team completed the 96mile route from the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in just five days, averaging around 20 miles a day over some really challenging terrain. Pace Chief Executive Ian Sansbury, who was one of the walkers, told us: “It was a very challenging but hugely rewarding trip through some of Scotland’s most compelling scenery. I think we would all agree that our second day, which included a punishing section along the rocky shores of Loch Lomond, was the most difficult. The
highlight, though, was a stunning fourth day across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor and up the Devil’s Staircase at the top of Glencoe. We were relatively lucky with the weather and were delighted that everyone could complete this challenging route in the time”. The group has already raised over £17,500 for Pace, money which will go directly to support their work with children with cerebral palsy and their families. But they are keen to attract more support from the Wendover community as they look to reach and exceed their £20,000 target. You can sponsor them via JustGiving at https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/whw2019 - or you can send a donation to West Highland Way Challenge, Pace, 156 Wendover Road, Stoke Mandeville, HP22 5TE.

Directors of Local Faces: Wendover Celebrates Just after my family moved here from Reading, we discovered that wonderful local institution, Wendover Carnival. It had been going for some years and one of its main purposes was to raise money to build a swimming pool. Around the mid eighties, my eldest lad Thomas, now aged 38, walked round dressed as a ring master, all decked out in a top hat and tails. I was sure he would win the fancy dress contest but he was beaten by a very imaginative animated version of the Clocktower. Unfortunately volunteers dried up and everything fizzled out . . . That was until 2012 when a modern version of Wendover Carnival was resurrected under the name Wendover Celebrates, inspired by the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics. At the time I was chair of Wendover Parish Council: a number of Councillors got together and attracted Wendover people to form a committee. The rest is history and we are now into organising the fifth successive Wendover Celebrates. Off the top of my head, we will have dished out nearly £40k to local charities and organisations from money raised. I feel very proud to have been part of that. It’s when that sort of effort is made that you realise all the hard work is worth it. Roof Repairs New roofs, Lead Flashings, Repointing, Gutter Repairs Call Pete: 01296 624618 07775 732192
I started as a volunteer and have, over time, worked with a great variety of people, to shape a one day event that happens every two years that people look forward to. Some ask me why we don’t run the event annually. If we had more volunteers we would probably consider the possibility but I like the anticipation of what will happen. WC2020 will be the last event that I will be involved with – certainly as a Director; we need to enlist younger people to take things forward. My thanks to all on the committee, to colleagues on Wendover Parish Council and especially to my two co-directors Matt and Fiona. Bob Duggan I have lived in Wendover for over 20 years after spending several years in the British Army. This is the 3rd time I have supported Wendover Celebrates and the 2nd time as a director. I am responsible for the site logistics including planning and security, and ensuring that everyone has a great day. “I’m really passionate about supporting the community especially local charities and organisations that bring people together. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone at the next event in 2020, which is set to be the best one yet!” Matt Hollingdale - Tree Pruning / Re-shaping / Felling - Dead Wooding - Stump Removal - Hedge Maintenance - Planting - Tree Preservation - Supply of Mulch & Woodchip 07767 795883 - Seasoned Logs 01296 613529 - All work performed to British gocalltreecare@gmail.com Standard 3998 gocalltreecare.com
Having grown up in Tring and then Gt Missenden and attending Tring Park School, some of my earliest memories are of Saturday lunch with my parents at the Red Lion, with the lovely Dolly serving us. We loved the independent shops that lined the beautiful High Street and always went for long weekend walks at Wendover Woods. When I opened my flower and gift shop in 2016, it was important to me that I did that in the village, and I am proud to now be one of those independent shops. I was honoured to be asked to become a director of Wendover Celebrates in October 2017, so this will be my second event. Having spent my life involved with theatrical productions, weddings and large corporate events – my responsibility for Wendover Celebrates is organising the entertainment, catering and stalls on the day and I am very much looking forward to big changes this year as we introduce many and varied “Arena Events” as well as an extended “Kid’s Zone”, “Stalls Site” and the ever popular live music in the evening. I very much welcome enquiries from anyone who would like to become involved with any of these areas – including catering – we really can’t do this without the support of our many volunteers and, of course, entertainment providers and stall holders. See you all on Sunday 24 May 2020. Fiona Quilter-Wood

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
Our Clerk Keith is grateful to the Highways department. He informed Transport for Bucks about potholes in Bryants Acre. They were done the next day. I’ll join Keith in hoping that this speedy service is going to become the norm. Tom Walsh I’m in an optimistic frame of mind, it must be the sunny weather, and I’m focusing on a few Parish Council Meeting of the Parish Council’s recent achievements Tuesday 1 October 7:30pm this month. The Wendover Parish Council offers a way for the community to move issues forward. You talk and we listen, and things will slowly improve.
