At the end of July residents of some Ellesborough Road cottages started receiving notices from HS2 Ltd terminating their tenancies as work will soon begin on the “green” tunnel. A large group of Wendover people is still working towards a different solution, see articles on pages 11 and 12. Articles on pages 14 and 24 contribute more to the story unfolding in our midst.

Resurfacing the bypass delayed

Buckinghamshire County Council has announced that the installation of a very low noise surface on Wendover bypass will be slightly delayed, now starting at 7pm on Friday 20 September with mostly overnight work and two weekend closures.

Wendover News, established 1989, is delivered through the door to many local households. If you do not receive one at home and would like to volunteer to deliver for us to your road, please contact the office (see above). Wendover News would like to thank all its willing volunteers.

Don’t panic, you’re not 150 years late for Harvest Festival! This poster is evidence of the generosity of the Holland Family back in September 1869. To find out how this local business is still going strong turn to page 29 and read about their descendants in this month’s Local Faces.

www.aslandscape.uk Phil Wallis & Ron Petersen of Wendover HS2 met with Nigel Greenidge of Fusion in August. Fusion are continuing their HS2 “Enabling Works” and plan more local archaeological digs and construction site fencing in the autumn. The route of the "green" tunnel will be fenced off once the crop in the field adjacent to Ellesborough Road has been harvested.

Three Big Issues

There are three crucial issues arising from our discussions with Eiffage Kier (EK) who have the contract to build our section of the line. We met with our AVDC Councillors to explain these to try to get AVDC engaged in the debate with HS2/EK.

a way as to contain the noise generated by the trains once they are running. Up to 400 homes could find that the noise exceeds the maximum World Health Organisation limits! Ironic given that HS2 are paying for a low noise surface to be laid on the bypass yet their own trains will break the noise limits.

t: 07714091346 e: alpineceramics@aol.co.uk LOCAL AND INSURED

Second, there is a serious concern that construction will cause irreparable damage to the natural underground water store that feeds off Coombe Hill.

Third, EK’s design for the Small Dean Viaduct is based on incorrect road traffic levels. DfT/ HS2 anticipated traffic levels are higher than the current design assumptions. Widening the A413 to a dual carriageway is not possible with the planned viaduct pier positioning and it will need new A413 speed restrictions as the road snakes through a Firstly, EK have told us that given the HS2 single viaduct span. This will lead to road plans they are unable to build the line in such congestion as traffic levels build up. The HS2 imposed design limitations on EK means that as detailed plans are being worked up, serious concerns are emerging about the practicalities of the viaduct/cut and cover tunnel mandate from HS2. EK tell us that their hands are tied by HS2.

HS2 A Fresh Start?

Wendover PC, with our lobbyist, are taking the change of government personnel as a new opportunity to push for the Mined Tunnel. Letters have gone out to all of the new players laying out the evidence that the tunnel is Cheaper, Quicker and Simpler. Paul Maynard MP is the new Rail Minister and Grant Shapps MP is Minister for Transport. At DfT/HS2, reviews are in hand and costs are coming into focus and I’m hopeful that if intelligent thought takes the place of dogmatic intransigence then the logic of a Wendover Tunnel will be considered fairly.

The HS2 project was voted through based on technical and procedural argument that was plausible enough to satisfy MPs. In practice it’s becoming more and more apparent that it was a hit and hope exercise and that it is failing to satisfy the expectations of us, the blighted and, increasingly, the thinking parliamentarians. Local News Lipreading with Judy Perry

Help for people with a hearing loss One in six of us has some degree of hearing loss. It’s an invisible disability and can affect people of all ages. When eyesight is failing people don’t hesitate to get glasses, but with hearing loss most wait around 10 years before taking a hearing test. Social occasions become fraught with difficulty which can lead to isolation and depression. Lipreading tutor Judy Perry, who has a hearing loss herself, runs classes in Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss in the Meeting Room at the Library. Judy says, “Deafness isn’t a joke; it doesn’t mean we’re stupid or getting old. It’s very easy to misunderstand speech if you can’t hear clearly. Hearing aids help but they are not a ‘cure’, they tend to amplify all sounds so it’s still difficult in noisy situations. Lipreading, using your eyes to help your ears, enables you to fill in the gaps. As well as the basics of lipreading, the classes provide information about useful strategies. Everyone’s in the same boat and we have a lot of fun!”

01296 682361 07885 031431

Judy will be running a FREE one-hour taster session on Friday 13 September at 11am, see advert page 4. If you, or someone you know, struggles to hear clearly they would benefit from joining a lipreading class. For further information contact Judy on 07837 993923 or email judy.lipreading@gmail. com. The Play’s the Thing

Unbound Theatre team up with national charity, Calibre Audio Library, to record plays for its members Calibre Audio Library has received a boost to its 11,000 audiobooks, thanks to the artistic efforts of Unbound Theatre, the Aylesbury based in-house production company of Queens Park Arts Centre. Calibre teamed up with Unbound through their 500 Words Challenge for this year’s WhizzFizzFest. From this collaboration, the idea grew to record plays for Calibre members to enjoy listening to, and bring back the experience of visiting the theatre.

They recently received a visit from two Buckinghamshire Freemasons, Phil Blacklaw (Bucks Assistant Provincial Grand Master) and Andrew Hough (Secretary of the BMCF), who were interested to see how the donation was helping children at the school. The Pace Centre has two sites in the Aylesbury area and serves children from the whole of Buckinghamshire as well as some from adjoining counties. The school has 34 students on the roll but supports over 300 children.

Ian told us: “Pace is all about enabling our children and young people to reach their full potential in life – in focusing on what they can do, rather than what society typically tells them they can’t. I’m really delighted that this fantastic group of people has come together to raise as much money as we can for this groundbreaking and life-changing charity”.

Gather your friends & family for a lesson in brewing, followed by beer tasting and English tapas to benefit Pace Children’s Charity on Thursday 17 October 6-9.30pm. Tickets £20 from lacey.bonham@ thepacecentre.org.

96 miles, 5 days, 9 walkers, midges, blisters and rain - all for the children and young people at Pace. In September, nine walkers (including seven from Wendover) will be walking the West Highland Way for Pace, the Aylesbury disability charity. Led by Pace chief executive, Ian Sansbury, and including other Wendover residents Tim Harwood, Ben Hutchings, Richard Jones, Paul Moring, Xenia Murray and Matt Ryan, the group will be walking the 96 miles from Milngavie (just north of Glasgow) to Fort William. They will average 20 miles a day on one of the most challenging of the UK’s long-distance trails.

The group have set themselves a fundraising target of £15,000 and they would love to have as much support from the Wendover community as possible. You can sponsor

info@wendoverneighbourhoodplan.co.uk The Wendover Neighbourhood Plan Regulation 16 Consultation ended on Monday 12 August and all comments received by AVDC are now being collated. These will be forwarded to the examiner. Modifications and comments by the examiner will then be incorporated into the Plan. In the meantime the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP) update briefing in July has highlighted the major modifications following the Inspector’s comments in December 2018. These have been returned to the Inspector and will be consulted on by AVDC in September/October 2019. The main points in relation to Wendover are concerned with the RAF Halton site (see sections):

sports provision in the whole camp should be retained where possible in any proposed development. 4.137 The first phase of development should concentrate on those areas already built-up. D-HAL003 No homes to be delivered before 2023 and 1000 in 2023-2033. Other comments relate to the built form to retain openness, in character with the surrounding area, preserving green corridors and retention of sports facilities in a long term strategy for the area.

David Lidington, MP A new Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, has taken over ministerial responsibility for HS2 and Douglas Oakervee, a former chairman of HS2 Ltd, has been asked to carry out a review of the project. With Parliament in recess, I’ve written to Mr Shapps with a series of questions about the review:

one office to another more quickly, would boost the economy.

• What are its terms of reference? • Will Mr Oakervee be able to recommend scrapping HS2 altogether? • How will he take account of ideas, like the Wendover mined tunnel proposal, which would both cut costs and mitigate the environmental impact?

Now we’re told that the case for HS2 doesn’t rest on speed at all but on capacity, and senior HS2 officials have suggested that the trains may have to run more slowly than planned. And that’s before taking account of how smart phones and tablets have enabled people to do plenty of productive work on the train. Indeed, I can’t help thinking that upgrading wi-fi on the main rail routes would be a cheaper and more effective way to improve economic efficiency.

This review needs to be a lot more than window-dressing. It should take a fresh and rigorous look at the business case underlying HS2. I’ve always thought that that case was weak: the economic benefits claimed for the project rested on the assumption that time spent on the train was not working time and that faster rail journeys, by enabling travellers to get from

Mr Oakervee needs to challenge from first principles the business case for HS2. Ideally, he will be persuaded, even now, that there are much better ideas around for major investment in transport. In my own view, the priority need is for better cross-country rail connections, most obviously between the cities of northern England, rather than new lines to London.

Frustrated with your Home Technology not doing what you want it to? … Let the Technology Doctors do it for you!

Wi-Fi/Broadband connection problems and signal boosting PC and iPad help and tuition including connecting to your printer and back up of your files and photos Smart Home Security installations and setup (eg. cameras and doorbells) Plus, many other services.

But we do need always to remember that in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and elsewhere there are influential voices - business, trade unions, local authorities, MPs of all parties- who believe strongly that HS2 will benefit their area. So we in Bucks, while pushing for HS2 to be abandoned, must at the same time keep on pressing for improvements if the scheme does go ahead. So in my letter, I’ve also asked Mr Shapps to revisit the case for an intermediate station between London and Birmingham. At least then people in Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties would get some benefit in terms of improved transport links. And I’ve urged him to press HS2 Ltd for a step change in their communications with local residents. WC2020: Children - The Future

The directors of Wendover Celebrates are pleased to announce that the theme of WC2020 will be Children - The Future. The theme will be a celebration of today's and tomorrow's youth in Wendover. There are amazing local opportunities for our children - good schools, lots of clubs, sports groups, active Scout and Guide troops and youth charities such as Pace; many of which will be beneficiaries from the proceeds of Wendover Celebrates in 2020. We believe the theme to be a great way of celebrating and supporting these organisations as well as giving our children the chance to show their skills and talents in our WC2020 Parade Ring. We welcome any school or club that wants to

put on a performance or demonstration for everyone at the event, so please do drop us a line via our website enquiry form. Your support is vital for the success of Wendover Celebrates - whether it is purchasing tickets and joining in the fun or giving a few hours of your time to volunteer on the day…we need you! We will be sure to let you know the moment tickets go on sale but in the meantime, if you have any thoughts on how you can be involved then don’t hesitate to contact us via wendovercelebrates. com or our Facebook page facebook.com/ wendovercelebrates. The directors and committee look forward to seeing you all on Sunday 24 May 2020.

The Hygiene Bank doesn't give products to individuals directly - we partner with local schools and existing charities such as foodbanks, supported housing schemes, refuges, hostels and social services who then distribute the products to the people they are working with. This means everything donated locally stays in the area and is given out to local families and individuals living in crisis. The Hygiene Bank for Aston Clinton and the surrounding villages embraces this vision for everyone to have access to toiletry, hygiene, grooming and beauty products so that no one has to suffer the indignity and social stigma of hygiene poverty.

at the community centre at RAF Halton and we are looking for a drop off point in Wendover - ideas are welcome.

There are also collection points (private to people or businesses) set up to receive your donations (with more to follow) at Nails by Danielle in Aston Clinton (by appointment only). We are happy to arrange a collection if required. The important ethos is, donate local, help local, which means whatever is donated in an area stays in that area to help the local community. We have been able to provide much needed products to many people following the Mix96 campaign.

Senior Aircraftman (SAC) Alex Smith from RAF Halton competed in the event representing the RAF in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt Heavyweight category and was also this year’s team captain. Alex successfully retained the Gi Heavyweight and No Gi titles winning double gold, whilst also able to win double silver in the open weight categories where all medallists from each weight enter against one another. Alex said: “It was an honour to be given the captaincy for this year’s competition. A total of 13 gold, 13 silver and 3 bronze medals were won by the team.”

Now having gained High Performance Athlete status within the RAF, Alex will remain at RAF Halton, so he can continue to train at the Roger Gracie Academy in Aylesbury. Currently ranked number two Purple Heavyweight in the UK, he will be aiming to get that number one spot. The RAF Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team is growing bigger month by month and holds its team training at RAF Digby. Alex said: “The RAF BJJ Team had a fantastic day at the Inter-Service Championships this year. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and determination to fight against the British Army and Navy Team. I have no doubt in my mind that everyone will strive to do even better in the competitions to come, civilian and military.”

Local Faces: The Dayla Family DAYLA & James Pettit, the 4th Generation family-owned Drinks Distributor and Wine Merchants is truly very much rooted in Wendover. It was Joseph Holland Senior who owned and ran The Red Lion Hotel, The King & Queen and former King’s Head and who also ran the Wendover Maltings Brewery that established a family tradition of a lifetime in the drinks trade. He also built Wendover School (next to the Clock Tower, now domestic dwellings) was a Wine & Spirit Merchant, a Meal & Corn Merchant, ran the Masonic Lodge and somehow, along the way, found time to have 10 children. His son, also Joseph, ran the Brewery until 1914 when he sold it to Aylesbury Brewery Company upon joining up to serve in the First World War. On his return, on 1st May 1919, he bought North & Randall Limited, a Mineral Water Manufacturer at the foot of the High Street in Aylesbury. Joe ran the business with his sister Miss Ellen (Nellie) Holland and was joined in 1948 by his sonin-law Richard (Dick) Cooper who then went on to build the well-known Soft Drinks range under the name of DAYLA following a highly successful national launch back in the 1960s of an iconic soft drink from South Africa called HUBBLY BUBBLY. The name DAYLA actually stands for (D)ick’s (AYL) esbury (A)gency. Joseph Holland was also Mayor of Aylesbury. Today, 100 years on from when Joe bought it, DAYLA & James Pettit is an

award-winning £35million business with a portfolio of more than 4500 products across all types of drinks, serving over 2000 Pubs, Clubs, Bars, Restaurants and Hotels across the Home Counties, and beyond. Today Joe’s family are all still very much in evidence.

back row: Tim, James, Daniel, Pete front row: Sue, Kaz, Sarah

At the helm is his grandson Tim Cooper, Managing Director, who in turn is joined by his own sister and brother-in-law Sue and Pete Lapham. The next generation are firmly installed with Tim’s son Daniel as Commercial Director, Kaz his daughter as Head of Design and from the Lapham stable, James Lapham (Sue & Pete’s son) IT & Finance Director with Sarah Lapham, their other son Chris`s wife, assisting behind the scenes on many special projects. So the family dynasty still very much carries on from the days when Tim and Sue’s parents, Dick and Pat Cooper, together with Pat’s sister, Joan Macmillan, established the business on a very firm footing, thereby allowing it to grow into the all-round drinks operation that it is today, supporting many local causes and events, since Wendover and the surrounding areas have been so important to the company’s success.

So what next, we ask? Well independence is very much at the core of this family business with DAYLA being very much a way of life for them all, rather than being regarded as a job of work. It will continue to offer a forever changing range of quality drinks and added value services. The Family already have a number of ideas for the next chapter, but very much at the cutting edge of the drinks world . . . so no resting on its laurels. And today the DAYLA family still lives in Wendover and frankly couldn`t imagine being anywhere else!! The late Richard Cooper OBE (Mr DAYLA) would have delighted in continuing to quote his own special catchphrase HAVE There is never a dull moment in this family A NICE DAYLA!!

operation with new business coming on stream all the time and an ever evolving portfolio of World Beers and Cask Ales, Craft Beer, Wines, Premium Spirits and of course Soft Drinks. In addition, there is also James Pettit which is the wine arm of DAYLA and was formerly owned by Aylesbury Brewery Company. DAYLA has grown both organically and through a number of acquisitions, though never lost its family principles and even today from the 110 staff there are a further 11 families working within the business giving it such a unique and special flavour. Working with more than 120 Suppliers means that life is never quiet at DAYLA and with the emergence of different drinking trends, they have to be ahead of the game and identify the next new taste . . . GIN has been massive and its popularity continues to grow. DAYLA now carries more than 300 Gin Brands with Rum being tipped as the next big winner. Low and Non-Alcoholic Drinks are also gaining momentum with some great tasting beers making impressive headway.
