Hospice crisis appeal
Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity launched a crisis appeal last month to help bridge a £1m shortfall in income due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Charity needs to raise £2,740 each day to run services at the Hospice, but at the moment is raising less than a third of that, due to the enforced closure of its shops and cancellation of fundraising events. The Charity has also been excluded from the Government’s coronavirus relief funding for hospices, due to its partnership with the NHS. Whilst care and support at the Hospice is continuing, this huge drop in income is putting the future of hospice services in our local area at risk, the Charity’s Chief Executive, Jo Turner, explains: “The Hospice was funded and built over thirty years ago thanks to a huge local fundraising campaign and it is thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters that we have been able to extend our services and increase the number of patients we can support over the years. We have been overwhelmed by the support and words of kindness we have received over the past few weeks – our local community have really got behind us again to help ensure that patients in the future can be offered the same high-quality end of life and palliative care as patients today.” You can donate or get involved with the Crisis Appeal at www. fnhospice.org.uk/crisisappeal or call 01296 429975 to donate.

We’ve had a meeting with Rob Butler MP. Rob will continue to ask questions of the minister for us. The Minister, Andrew Stephenson, has, in a written response to Rob, indicated that communities are to be consulted on HS2 S17 planning issues. Rob will investigate this divergence between the LPA and The Minister on S17 planning consultation. Ailsa
In early January, Wendover News received a query from Richard Pownall about a house called 'Ailsa' which used to be in Wendover: "At the time of the First World War, my great-grandparents lived in 'Ailsa' in Wendover. Does anyone know where that was - or is? Would appreciate any local knowledge. Many thanks."

Dominic Williams (left) and Raphael Labonne (right) proudly show off a display of their completed English IGCSE course work. Both pupils wrote a persuasive piece challenging the legal issues facing a town that has been hit by increases in criminality. Both boys touch on the topics of justice and liberty, questioning who has the right to make decisions on the behalf of others
A local genealogist was able to find out approximately where it used to be from the 1911 census, when the forms were completed by the resident and collected. They were recorded in order of collection by an official. The record for Ailsa mentions it being "next to" 'The Red House' which still stands in Aylesbury Road in Wendover. Hence it is likely but not certain that 'Ailsa' is on or near that part of Aylesbury Road. If you know anything about the house, please email editor@ Weekend Market at Chiltern View Nursery From Friday 5 March Chiltern View Nursery on Aylesbury Road wendovernews.co.uk. will hold a weekend market every Friday & Saturday through the summer. Freemasons support the NHS
Such are the pressures of working within the NHS at the moment, that staff are often unable to stop for meals and are using ice cubes as a way of staying hydrated during their busy shifts. Buckinghamshire Freemasons saw a post on Facebook asking for assistance to buy two freezers so that staff on COVID wards at Stoke Mandeville Hospital could take in food and provide easy access to this important, hydrating ice. One freezer had already been funded. Bucks Freemasons immediately paid for the second freezer after making contact with Paula Tompkins from Haddenham, who was leading the fundraising. A week later, Buckinghamshire Freemasons again partnered with Paula Tompkins and her team to bring a little joy to the staff of Ward 9 by providing a fridge and microwave so staff can store and heat their meals when there isn’t enough time to leave. Learning languages in lockdown
Social distancing and lockdown are tough for all of us and we are struggling to keep mentally healthy. First, we cannot see our loved ones and our friends but also we are stuck at home. How can you turn a difficult situation into something more manageable. Your answer could be languages. There has never been a better time to learn a language than during lockdown. Use of language learning apps or online classes has boomed during the pandemic and for once Britons are leading the way. The top reason for signing up is an interest in language learning and other cultures, which has overtaken travel.

HS2 and Me On a typical British November day in 1976, just one week after our son’s first birthday, we arrived in Ellesborough Road, Wendover. Forty years on to the month, not sure about the day, we left. We didn’t want to leave, but we had no choice. Our home for all those years was in the way of “progress” ie HS2.
be financially viable? Would it be distressing? Though it seemed a never ending process, HS2 were ultimately fair. But by then, the community we knew was no more. Our neighbours had scattered and the new short term occupants had no interest in investing in their homes or neighbours.
Now 4 years on, perhaps sufficient time has passed for me to reflect on how HS2 has changed our lives, especially now that work appears to have begun in Ellesborough Road. In fact it was was already blighted in the 1970s by plans for a new much needed By-Pass. Luckily in the end, no houses were demolished for the new road and a new bridge re-connected Wendover to the historic Ridgeway Path to Bacombe Hill and beyond to Coombe Hill.
As Heraclitus commented, “The only constant in life is change,” and HS2 has Alison's former home in Ellesborough Road can certainly brought about change. Wendover is a beautiful town and just popping to shops in the High Street could turn into a prolonged outing, especially on Market Days. There was always a friend or neighbour happy to chat. Our neighbours in Ellesborough Road were a quiet and gentle group. People gave willingly of their time for the well-being of the Wendover community. There are plenty of activities, a volunteer-staffed Community Library, loads of local clubs and special events. All things I greatly miss. Wendover is • • • • •

HS2 plans are going to create traffic at solutions to reduce the misery, flooding & incessant noise! impact of circa 800 twoHelp us to do what’s right for Wendover Bucks Council (BC) have the critical role of reviewing HS2 planning submissions and demanding adequate mitigation from their designs. This is the only opportunity available to us as a community to prevent traffic misery for everyone in the local area, save the reservoir & canal, ensure households in Stoke Mandeville & Aylesbury are safe from flooding, protect the beauty of our AONB and prevent households suffering from ongoing noise disturbance. Hillingdon Council’s successful challenge of HS2 plans provided a clear precedent, so we are raising the alarm and supporting Bucks Council with the technical facts and questions they need in order to challenge HS2 contractor EKFB’s design on all our behalf. We have very little time left before planning submissions are in, and you can help in two ways: by clicking on our website www.whs2. org to complete our survey and writing to our Councillors www.buckinghamshire.gov. uk, to ask them to support our mitigation solutions. Here’s a round-up of all the latest news…
Traffic
WHS2 is monitoring the significant increase in HGV movements, comparing what has been declared by HS2 contractor EKFB vs predictions in the HS2 Act. Working with Highways and Bucks Council we are looking
the total water involved. BC and the Environment Agency (EA) agree more work is required despite tests planned last year being further delayed!
way HGV trips a day on the A413 – that’s 5x more than previously declared that we should expect! We are also collaborating with seven Parish Councils from Little Missenden up to Aylesbury to combine our mitigation efforts, and in particular traffic mitigation. This “stronger together” joined-up approach will tackle issues affecting not just Wendover, but all surrounding villages up and down the line to bring about meaningful change to HS2 plans.
Hydrogeology
Our expert reports indicate that up to 30 million litres of water per day – that is the equivalent of 12 Olympic sized swimming pools – will be diverted from the Wendover Arm Canal and the Weston Turville Reservoir, flooding Stoke Mandeville & Aylesbury. This month HS2 and EKFB have confirmed for the first time that the Green Tunnel and North Cutting will indeed intercept the aquifer, but they insist the quantities of water involved are too low to consider. This is their justification for not incorporating any of the basic mitigations we would expect - such as lining the cutting to prevent water flooding the track. After 6 years of campaigning, they have allowed us to review their ground water model which we have found only accounts for 25% of
Noise
Half of Wendover will suffer from excess noise, with trains every two minutes during the day and causing sleep disturbance at night. Planning submissions are looming and a key factor in the Bucks Council review of the contractor’s plans is ‘stakeholder engagement’, including community opinion and this is where we need your help to complete our noise survey. We will consolidate the results of the survey and present them to Bucks Council, HS2 and EKFB as the community view. They are obliged to give the same level of importance to this as to other criteria such as cost. Please go to www.whs2.org and click on the ‘How to help’ button to complete our survey and ask your friends, family, and anyone else to click too, because the numbers really do count and every voice matters.

I did manage to catch some of the action from the World Indoor Championships on television. That is played on full size rinks unlike our own 12.5 metre rink. It is amazing to see the skill they have, to put a bowl within a couple of inches of the jack from around 30 metres away and judge the swing of several metres due to the bias on the bowl. Although we are closer in our short match game, we have to bowl round a block of wood half way down the track. The technical term for the block is the block, which shows what incredible imaginations bowlers have. Mind you, it is frequently given much more colourful names as the slightest touch voids the shot.

Planning for the season continues in the hope that it will be able to start on time, but is obviously dependent on Government announcements. There will be the usual full range of activities including junior and senior cricket and the Village Cup. Additionally, the club has signed up to the ECB Dynamos programme and is using it for a girls only section in the 8 to 11 years old age group, with sessions planned for Sunday mornings. The ECB launch through which one registers has been delayed for the Government’s Covid update in March.

Youth Wendover Foodbank Donation Week
Monday 22 March - Sunday 28 March 2021 Last year, Wendover Youth Centre, Churches Together in Wendover, and Wendover Parish Council came together with the Wendover Foodbank to organise two food bank donation weeks during Covid-19 Pandemic lockdown. The whole community donated an amazing 1000kg towards the foodbank which was able to feed over 100 people for 3 days! Due to the continued effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for the foodbank in the Wendover and Chiltern area has remained high, so we have decided to run another foodbank donation week from Monday 22 March - Sunday 28 March 2021. Wendover is part of the Chiltern Foodbank network, supported by the Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. No one in our community should have to face going hungry. Wendover’s Carbon Footprint A recent survey of Wendover residents, conducted by Climate Action Wendover, estimated that our average individual residential carbon footprint is 8.1 tonnes CO2 per year per person. Scientists agree that we need to reach a carbon footprint of ‘net zero’ by 2030 to avoid the worst effects of global warming. That means we need to reduce our individual carbon footprint to a level that allows nature to deal with the remainder, often called the natural sequestration of CO2. What is Climate Action Wendover doing? Wendover’s total annual carbon footprint is approximately 65,000 tonnes CO2. Three projects currently underway to understand what impact they will have on reducing Wendover’s total carbon footprint include: • Evaluating solar panels on public buildings • Commencing several tree planting projects • Developing proposals for a 20mph zone

Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize 2021 The Ridgeway – the oldest road in Britain – was a trackway providing a reliable trading route from the Dorset coast along the chalk Downs to the Wash in Norfolk. Today it is not only the oldest road but is also a wonderful resource for all the communities that live along its route, where all can enjoy walking, riding or just being there. The Friends of The Ridgeway have established an annual arts competition and prize – the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize. In 2020 this had to be cancelled. For 2021, it will be held in April; if practical and possible, there will be an exhibition in Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington on Saturday and Sunday 24 25 April 2021; if not possible there will be an online exhibition and prize giving. The aim of the competition is to bring The Ridgeway to life not only as a long distance trail but also as an artistic inspiration, and to show The Ridgeway, its history and environs, in all their aspects throughout all seasons. The theme of the competition is ‘Spirit of the Ridgeway’.
The main points of the prize competition are: • There will be separate classes for painting, sculpture (including ceramics and textiles), photography and writing (poetry or prose) • Competition is open to artists, amateur and professional, of any age • Art work submitted must be produced in the 24 months prior to closing date • The results of the competition will be announced and prizes awarded at the Ridgeway Friends Day planned for 25 April 2021 or online at that time • The closing date for entries shall be one month prior to the Ridgeway Friends Day (i.e. 25 March 2021); • The full rules of the competition are given in a separate document. All entrants will receive one year’s membership of The Friends of The Ridgeway. Each category winner will receive a keeper prize plus £100. The overall winner will receive a keeper prize plus £250 and a trophy.

Colin came to live in Manor Road in 1962 with his beloved wife Margaret. Their three children, David, Sarah and Jude, all grew up here, about as far away from the sea as possible. Colin had been born in Plymouth in 1930 and lived there with his mother Lena as his father Earn was away in the Navy much of the time. They endured heavy war time bombing and Colin came away with the chant "Owing to the wind and rain, poor old Argyles lost again". He never swerved in loyalty to his home football team.

Colin led his family in becoming involved in Wendover life. He supported John Colet PTA and in the 1970s joined the Wendover Carnival Committee which had the difficult task of raising the funds to build Wendover Swimming Pool which has since been developed and updated out of all recognition.

Colin was a thoroughly reliable leader. This wasn't evident from his school reports but maybe National Service as a radio engineer on DC3 Dakotas with the RAF played a part in his development. The day he really shone was as a clerk with the National Provincial Bank in Devonport, back in 1957, two years after he had married Margaret. He thwarted a would-be bank robber, despite having pepper thrown at him, wrestling him to the ground and wrapping his head in a heavy curtain. The capture and subsequent prosecution were reported in the Western News of 6 September 1957. Management must have noticed his courage and he swiftly rose to become a bank manager in the days when that was a highly respected position and he kept that rank until he retired. Then he and Margaret could develop their love of cruises.
As he approached retirement, Colin joined Chiltern Forest Golf Club in the early nineteen eighties, playing regularly, enjoying the course and making many new friends. He was foremost in setting up the 200 Club in the late eighties to boost club funds and this is still going strong today. By 1998 he was Club Captain. His year was very successful moving the Club forward. He enjoyed the social side He then turned his mind to the Friends of and attended most of the functions with Wendover Health Centre, setting up the 200 Margaret. He will always be remembered for Club in the late eighties to buy equipment his humour and his laugh. He will be missed and provide travelling expenses for drivers. by the Club and all the Past Captains. He became a mainstay of Wendover Twinning Association which was a heavy responsibility including regular school exchanges with Liffré and intermittent exchanges of other mirror organisations including the football clubs, police and choirs. He chaired this important local organisation for over 13 years.

Local Face: Graham Evans Graham was born in Stalybridge, Manchester. and spent the 1960s as a professional drummer with his band ‘The Big Sound’ in the UK, Germany, Denmark and Israel. The well-known bands & artists he toured with included Jimi Hendrix, The Small Faces, The Graham 1960s Yardbirds & Georgie Fame, playing at some of the worlds most iconic venues including the Cavern Club and the Star Club. At the end of the band’s last European tour Graham returned to the northern cabaret circuit, playing in the house band for entertainers such as Cannon & Ball, Little & Large and Bernard Manning.
is very much a local girl with her family history in Wendover dating back over 4 generations. Lisa & Graham have two children Joe & Carmel, now 5th generation. Joe, Carmel and Carmel’s husband Harry still Graham more recently live in Wendover.
John Junkin, Sir Stanley Matthews and our own barmaid Dolly at the inaugural Red Lion Sportsman’s Dinner
Graham arrived here on on his 22nd birthday, Sunday 10 August 1969. He decided to have a career change. It could not have been more different from his days with the band. Staying with his brother and sister-in-law in Icknield Close, Wendover, he got a job as a van salesman at Brazils of Amersham, became Bowyers. He very quickly learnt his way around the Chilterns on his van route. He was promoted to supervisor and later to area manager. In 1976 he joined Stevens of Prestwood (became Farmer Giles Foods) as Sales Manager. Graham then rose to Sales Director for Sonny’s American Cheesecakes & S Baron Ltd one of the oldest Smoked Salmon companies in the country, based in the East End of London. In 1991 he started up his own company Chiltern Salads Ltd. Employing over 20 full time staff, the business ran successfully for 21 years.
Graham founded the popular ‘Red Lion Sporting Association’ and hosted guest speakers such as Sir Stanley Matthews, Alan Lamb, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Docherty and many more raising well needed money for local & national charities. In 2004 whilst having a drink in the Shoulder of Mutton he came up with the idea along with the then manager Keith for the ‘Party in the Garden’. Graham had always wanted to organise an outside event and here was the perfect venue in the heart of the village. He arranged all the music and staging for the next four years when his long-time friend and fellow musician Barry Evans carried on the tradition very successfully. All profits have gone to local charities including ‘Friends of Wendover Health Centre’ & ‘Ian Rennie Hospice at Home’ (now Rennie Grove).
In 1987 the death of his father from a heart related illness prompted Graham to pick up his drumsticks again and do a charity gig at the Wendover Memorial Hall for the British Heart Foundation celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of the Beatles single ‘Love Me Do’. The Wendover Beatles were born with his long-time friend John Hinton on bass and support from old friends Christopher Pallet and Andrew Gardner who advertised in their shop windows, even putting a jukebox in Andrew Gardner’s window. In 2012 The Wendover Beatles returned to the Memorial Hall to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘Love Me Do’. Graham has organised many other shows to help raise money for various local charities with his bands The Graham Evans All Stars, China Rose & The Duvets.
After running a successful business for 21 years Graham decided it was time to retire and get back to his beloved music. With the revival of vinyl, he is doing his music in a different way, Graham now deals in records, buying and selling online, and is a regular contributor to online music blogs, whilst Lisa runs her own garden design business ‘The Beehive Garden Design’.
He married his long-term partner Lisa in 1990 at Stocks Country Club in Aldbury. Lisa was born in Sidney Terrace, Wendover and

I had the honour of being elected as Chairman at the February Parish Council Meeting. A bit of background from me: I have lived in Wendover for 36 years.
