Director General Pat McDonald

Welcome to the Wenatchee Valley, and the 95th Annual Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. We are blessed to live in this beautiful valley and that’s why our festival theme this year is “Livin’ The Dream”. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, an art lover, a sports fan, or a lover of good food and wine, the Wenatchee Valley has something for you. This is truly a special place to live and a wonderful place to visit. An army of volunteers work together to make the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival happen each year. Our festival is an 11 day run of fun activities and exciting events for everyone. My favorite? The Grand Parade! I wouldn’t miss it. We also have a community of generous sponsors without whom we could never make our festival happen year after year. My personal thanks to all who contribute to the Apple Blossom Festival with their time, talent and treasure. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to serve as Director General for Festival 2014. Thank you for joining us this year for “Livin’ The Director General, Pat McDonald Dream” and I will see you at the parade! and her husband Jim

Queen Roslyn Thompson

On behalf of myself, Princess Caroline and Princess Nikara, we are so honored and excited to welcome you to the 95th Apple Blossom Festival here in the Wenatchee Valley. As ambassadors of the festival we are privileged with the opportunity to share the beauty of our valley with all of you. Anyone who lives here knows how blessed we are to have a gorgeous backdrop of mountains, over 300 days of sunshine a year and a community that thrives every spring during the Apple Blossom Festival. One of the best parts of this festival is that it shows off the people of our valley. For example, talented artists and musicians and those who put so much time and effort to make our community shine its brightest through this eleven day festival. I don't think there is a place in the world you can truly live the dream better than in Wenatchee Washington. Our festival is one of the oldest festivals in the state of Washington and this year being it's 95th birthday we are proud to represent the festival that all three of us grew up loving. This festival not only showcases the community of Wenatchee but also the natural beauty, talented citizens, amazing food and fruit industry that continues to make this valley so amazing. We hope you will join us this year for the 2014 Apple Blossom Festival activities as we are truly "Livin' The Queen Roslyn Thompson Dream."

Welcome Chancellor Rolfe Ogle

On behalf of the Wenatchee Applarians, Lady Pat and I welcome you to the 95th Washington State Apple Blossom Festival. The Applarians, 165 members strong, are the official hosting organization for our Northwest Festival guests. Watch for us escorting each float in the parade wearing our pink shirts. Members of Applarians serve as ambassadors for Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. We escort the Royalty float at different festivals around the Pacific Northwest, plus one in British Columbia. The Applarians also provide $6,000 each year for our Apple Blossom Queen’s scholarship fund. The theme this year is “Livin’ the Dream.” We all feel living in the Washington State playground, we are living the dream. We hope you enjoy all the fun festival events and take the time to explore. We have the new Pybus Market on Worthen Street and the beautiful River walk, plus so much more. Thank you for coming and enjoy the Wenatchee Valley Applarian Chancellor and all it has to offer. Rolfe Ogle and Lady Pat

Grand Parade Grand Marshal

Saturday, May 3 • 11:00 am Grand Marshal sponsored by

Grand Marshals: Bob Parlette, Eliot Scull, and the late Gordon Congdon; all three men have been instrumental in the creation of the Apple Capital Loop Trail and it’s extensions.

Bob Parlette has served the community in countless ways, from his tireless advocacy for community trails systems in the Greater Wenatchee Area, and has been the guiding force to create our beloved Apple Capital Loop Trail. He has served many years as the chair of the Complete the Loop Coalition, and now he has spearheaded a remarkable effort to create the Rocky Reach Trail, which will connect Lincoln Rock State Park to the northern terminus of the Loop Trail. Dr. Eliot Scull has been instrumental in founding non-profits in North Central Washington that have been transformative to our communities: the Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club, the Complete the Loop Coalition, the Methow Conservancy, and the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. For each of these organizations, Eliot and his wife Tina, have infused game-changing leadership and funds at critical junctures to allow each organization to make significant gains in leveraging community support. Most recently, the Sculls gifted over $1.1 M to the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, as a leadership gift in its $8.6 M campaign. The Land Trust is now a prominent communitybased organization with over 1,100 members, a direct result of their leadership. After nearly 54 years as a physician, Gordon Congdon worked tirelessly with Bob Parlette and many others in the Complete the Loop Coalition, to develop the eastside portion of the 10-mile loop trail that runs along both sides of the Columbia River. A portion of the eastside trail was named in honor of his father, Russell T. Congdon. Up until the last two years of his life, he was a regular biker on the Loop Trail. Gordon often remarked that he was the luckiest man alive to have been able to spend nearly his whole life among friends in Wenatchee. As the Grand Marshals, they will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday, April 30 and ride in the Stemilt Growers Grand Parade on Saturday, May 3. The Grand Marshals are sponsored by Colonial Vista Communities and Vista Rehab Therapy.

“Mt. Cashmere” by artist Claudia Wiggins

Claudia has always had a love for painting and upon her retirement from teaching three years ago, she began studying with master artist Jan Cook Mack. Painting scenes of our amazing valley and her precious grandchildren are among her favorite subjects. The print is titled “Mt. Cashmere.” Claudia feels so fortunate to be able to see this view daily from her home as a reminder of the beautiful valley in which she grew up. She and her husband, Keith, own Boswell’s Furniture and have three children and five grandchildren. Order your print online at appleblossom.org, $32 or at the Festival Office

Lehman Johnson Award

Dr. Fred and Ann Deal have lived in Wenatchee since 1972, with Ann’s roots in the valley going back much further. After living in both Spokane and Port Angeles, Ann first moved to the Wenatchee Valley in 1950, when her father Rev. Jim Albertson became pastor of the First United Methodist church. Ann was crowned Apple Blossom Queen in 1958, and fondly remembers many parades and trips during her reign. Ann met Fred, a native of Nampa, Idaho, at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. They were married on June 5th, 1960, by the Ann’s father, Rev. Jim Albertson. In 1972, the family of six moved to the beautiful Wenatchee Valley, when Fred joined the Wenatchee Valley Clinic as an orthopedic surgeon. It was during these years that Fred renewed his interest in antique automobiles, purchasing many vehicles and restoring them; among them are his famous 1921 Model T Ford. He would later use this vehicle, after restoration, to begin a decades-long tradition of chauffeuring dignitaries and Festival Royalty in the Youth & Grand parades. Ann was also heavily involved in Apple Blossom, working with other past royalty. She and Fred occasionally helped transport royalty to other parades. Yet Ann really found her niche when she began offering an etiquette dinner for the top ten candidates, where she would teach them the finer points of using the right fork, and dining with good manners. Fred and Ann look forward to their continuing involvement with the festival. As long as dignitaries still need rides in old cars, and as long as Fred and his century old car hold up, he’ll be driving in the parade. And as long as Royalty Top Ten Candidates need instruction or a refresher course in good table manners, Ann will be hosting a dinner, complete with instruction on fine dining. The Deals will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Wednesday, April 30, and will also ride in the Stemilt Growers Grand Parade on May 3.

Apple Citizen of The Year

Kirk Mayer has been named 2014 Apple Citizen of the Year. The Apple Blossom Festival Royalty and Festival Administrator Darci Waterman presented Kirk with the award at the Apple Commission earlier in April. The Apple Citizen of the Year award began in 1981 to honor the roots of the Festival and the leaders that make this the Apple Capital of the World. Kirk is a graduate of Cashmere High School. He received his degree from Washington State University in 1972 and began working at the Washington Growers Clearinghouse that same year. Kirk is now the Manager at the Washington Growers Clearing House Association which represents 2,000 tree fruit growers. Over the years Kirk has been involved with over 30 horticulture organizations including the WSDA Commodity Inspection Service Advisory Committee, WSDA Farmworker Education Program, WSDA Future of Farming Initiative, WA L & I Cholinesterase Monitoring Stakeholder Group, Hort. Assoc. Governmental Affairs Committee, NCAE, and the Habitat Farming Initiative. Kirk and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 25 years and have two children, Carl & Molly. He enjoys playing tennis with Molly and hiking with Carl. Kirk will be honored at the All Service Club Luncheon on Kirk Mayer, Washington Wednesday, April 30, and will also ride in the Stemilt Growers Growers Clearinghouse Grand Parade on May 3.

Royalty Past

1939 Pateros Princess Esther D (Stennes) Jones Esther was selected as the Pateros Princess Representative for the 1939 Apple Blossom Festival. Esther’s mother, Bertha, was battling cancer at that time but was able to take Esther shopping for a new blue dress. Sadly, Bertha passed away four days before the Festival and Esther was unable to ride in the Grand Parade. Esther’s family has recently learned of this story as they prepared to move her after passing of her husband of 71 years, Ross H. Jones. They have requested that the Apple Blossom Festival fulfill a 75 year old dream to ride in the Grand Parade, in her same blue dress, and it is our privilege to see this finally happen for Esther.

Esther D Jones 1936 Apple Blossom Princess Gertrude Webb Scroggie Gertrude, the daughter of Ernest & Lola Webb, was part of the third generation of the Webb family to grow up on the Colockum Creek Ranch. In 1936, Gertrude was asked by the faculty of Wenatchee High School to be an Apple Blossom Princess, of which she was thrilled. One of the most memorable moments was their Big trip to…Seattle. Gertrude married Carl Scroggie in 1939 and delivered milk for Scroggie Dairy. Eventually, Gertrude became the bookkeeper for the Malaga Co-op. Gertrude is the oldest living Apple Blossom Royalty member and we are so thankful to have her be a part of our parade.
