One of the most popular runs at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort, the Bomber Bowl, gets its name from the devastating crash of a B-24 bomber in 1944. The crash landed about 500 feet below the summit, killing all six crewmen and strewing the area with wreckage. Years later, a monument was created from a wing of the plane and is located just uphill from the original crash site. If you are wanting a peaceful day outdoors, grab

Ohme Gardens: A delightful alpine oasis

T

he Ohme Gardens will take your breath away. Filled with alpine meadows, dainty wildflowers and shimmering streams, the gardens are nothing short of enchanting. Spend an afternoon picnicking among the wildflowers or explore the rugged paths. In 1929, Herman Ohme purchased the land that would eventually be dubbed Ohme Gardens. Originally intended to be an orchard,

Herman and his wife were inspired by the breathtaking views of the Wenatchee Valley and Cascade Mountains that the craggy bluff offered and created the beautiful alpine escape we see today. The work was done over many long years, largely by hand, and is a true masterpiece of hard work, love and devotion. The gardens are open daily from April 15 through Oct. 15.

World photo/Don Seabrook Christi Maroney, left, Wenatchee, and Krystal Frost, East Wenatchee, share a story while sipping Chelan Craft Cider with lemon during Saturday’s “The Big Chill” at Pybus Public Market.

Pybus Public Market: A hub for community, dining and local artisans

P

ybus Public Market is a central hub for dining, shopping and community in Wenatchee. It is the second largest public markets in Washington state and is located on the west bank of the Columbia River near downtown Wenatchee. Just outside, the 11-mile, paved Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail will whisk you away after an afternoon spent dining, checking out the local produce and shops, and soaking in quality time with friends and family. You can eat and shop at the market’s many stores and restaurants morning and night. The market is a community

meeting place, filled with weekend art shows, live music and fundraisers. A piano even stands at the ready for anyone adventurous enough to play. The loop trail is right by the market and on the shoreline of the Columbia River. Head north past the market's osprey nest situated on a tall pole and check out the parks public art. Or, if you are feeling up to it, rent a bike and do the full loop — it will take about an hour. Afterward, visitors can check out historic downtown Wenatchee. The downtown is full of restaurants, pubs, cute cafes and ice cream parlors, quirky shops, public sculptures, the Numerica Perform-

ing Arts Center and the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

What they said

“The building is breathtaking, the local farmers, restaurants and artisanal food producers it hosts are uniformly superb, and its location on the banks of the Columbia River is stunning.” — Seattle Refined/Komo “The Pybus Market has far more to offer than a location to buy your weekly supply of groceries. It is a historical destination where you can shop, dine, relax, bike on the river, meet friends, bring visitors, listen to music, and host your event

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

World file photo/Don Seabrook Former and present Eastmont High School students gather for a pickup game of futsal in November 2020 at the court at the Eastmont Community Park in East Wenatchee. The artificial turf field, smaller than a soccer field, opened up after two years of planning led by East Wenatchee resident Alex Cruz. It’s surrounded by fencing, but open to the public. An official futsal ball is smaller, heavier and doesn’t bounce as high as a normal soccer ball.

East Wenatchee: The landing site of history E ast Wenatchee is a city brimming with modern and ancient history. The East Wenatchee Clovis site, where 11,000-yearold stone tools were discovered by a local farmer, is a historical marvel. The site has since been refilled, but not before uncovering important

clues about the Clovis people in Washington state. More recently, East Wenatchee was the resting place of Miss Veedol, the Bellanca Skyrocket that crash-landed near the city in 1931, after becoming the first airplane to cross the Pacific Ocean nonstop. A replica of the bright orange, single-

engine aircraft flies over the Wenatchee Valley on special occasions. The area near Pangborn Memorial Airport — named for one of the two pilots who flew the Miss Veedol — is now home to data centers, attracted by relatively inexpensive hydropwer and available land.

East Wenatchee may be a bit drier than its more forested counterpart, but it isn’t lacking in natural beauty. Gaze out across the Columbia and you will be greeted by a valley-wide panoramic view of Wenatchee, as well as the stunning landmark of Saddle Rock and the surrounding foothills.

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

Visitors should take a drive up Badger Mountain Road, five miles northeast of East Wenatchee. The road features spectacular views of the Wenatchee Valley and the Stuart Mountain Range. East Wenatchee is also home to the biggest indoor mall in the Wenatchee Valley, tasty restaurants and lots of nearby golf. The 26-acre Eastmont Community Park, at North Georgia Avenue and Grant Road, provides recreation opportunities as well, including a pool, baseball, soccer and futsol fields, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, restrooms, a playground and splash pad. The Loop Trail I f you are looking for a place to walk or ride your bike, check out the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail. Known simply as "the loop" by locals, the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail is a Wenatchee Valley landmark. For a day of adventure, follow the 11-mile paved path along the shoreline of the Columbia as it crosses three bridges and threads through the various parks and natural ecosystems of the Wenatchee Valley.

Pick your path

On the Wenatchee side of the path you will find shade and green grass. On the east side near the Odabashian Bridge, however, shrubsteppe and a beautiful view of the Cascades await.

Wenatchee River long enough, and you just might see migrating salmon on their way upstream to spawn. The bridge is just a few steps from Confluence State Park.

Feel like going farther? Two more paved paths con-

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

The dams of North Central Washington Rocky Reach Dam

The Rocky Reach Dam and Discovery Center has finally reopened with some exciting new exhibits to explore. The new center is open year-round and features expanded and updated exhibits, bigger windows for fish viewing and new hands-on displays. Full of stories, history and art, the new Discovery Center offers an interactive way to learn about the Columbia. Nearby at the Rocky Reach Park you can also find gardens, a playground for the kids and an arboretum filled with winding paths, flowering magnolias and towering pines.

Chief Joseph Dam

Located just upstream from Bridgeport, the Chief Joseph Dam is the second-largest hydropower-producing dam in the United States. The dam has an Orientation Area with interpretive displays for visitors, as well as a radio-broadcasted tour. Just behind the dam is Rufus Woods Lake, a 51-mile-long body of water that offers fishing, boating, camping and hiking.

Wanapum Dam

Operated by the Grant County PUD, Wanapum Dam is located on the Columbia River six miles downstream of Vantage.

Learn about the life, language and culture of the Wanapum people at the Wanapum Heritage Center near the dam. More info: wanapum.org

Rock Island Dam

Located 12 miles downstream from Wenatchee, the Rock Island Dam was the first to span the Columbia River and is operated by the Chelan County PUD. The dam has no visitor center and is not open to the public.

Wells Dam

Drive 50 miles north of Wenatchee off Highway 97 and you will find Wells Dam. This dam is operated by Douglas County PUD. A tree-covered viewpoint includes information on the dam, a petroglyph display, picnic shelter and restrooms.

Rocky Reach Dam: A new visitor center Rocky Reach Dam, just a few minutes north of Wenatchee on Highway 97A, reopened its all-new Discovery Center in 2021 and there's a lot to see and do. The main floor has one of the three mini-theaters in the Discovery Center. There is also a cafe with stairs up to a deck, which has a brilliant view of the dam and fish ladder. There's a round glass floor where visitors can walk on and look down upon the spiral fish mobile underneath. This 14-foot tall fish mobile, which spans two floors, was designed by Pacific Studio in Seattle. Over 100 salmon are on the spiral, all cut to represent the different types of salmon found in the mid-Columbia. Descend down to lower level 1 and you'll see the living river area which shows how Native Americans lived in the area. Many of the artifacts came from the now closed Museum of the Columbia, including a tule house and canoe. A hydropower know-how section includes a large floor mural of the northwest showing the Columbia River, all its tributaries and the dam locations on the river. One sure-to-be-popular display is the Sternwheeler Video Game. You grab the wheel and see a video display of the Rock Island rapids. Now you try to steer your sternwheeler through the rapids, but there are obstacles, rapids, rocks and sandbars. The fish-viewing area is on lower level 2. It has two large viewing windows where you can get a real good look at migrating fish. There’s no railing so kids and adults can get right up to the fish viewing window.

Entiat was settled by the Columbia River Chinook Indian Tribe during the 1800s. The tribe named the town “Enteatqua,” which means rapid water — a fitting name for a city nestled between rivers. WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

World photo/Don Seabrook Chardonnay grapes grow in a vineyard near Quincy. The Columbia Basin offers good growing conditions for wine grapes.

Where we grow grapes in NCW

N

orth Central Washington has four American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), which are officially designated wine-grape growing regions. Each has its own distinct climate, soils, elevation and other features that affect the quality and characteristics of its grapes. At the request of local wineries, boundaries of each AVA — or appellation — are set by the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the U.S. Department of the

Treasury. The U.S. has 230 AVAs, ranging in size from 29,900 square miles (Mississippi Valley AVA) to just 60 acres (Cole Ranch AVA in California). At least 85 percent of grapes used in a wine must be grown in an AVA for a vintner to use the region’s name on the vintage’s label. Here’s a quick look at each of our local AVAs:

Columbia Valley AVA

Established: 1984 as the state’s third appellation. Size: 11 million acres

and encompassing most of the Columbia Basin. It’s the state’s largest AVA. It contains 10 sub-appellations, including three in NCW. Grapes: Most varieties are represented, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Pinot Gris. Distinguishing features: Soils are defined by the ancient Missoula Glacial Floods of 15,000 to 18,000 years ago. Many vineyards are below the flood line in soils of loess — windblown deposits of sand and silt —

which lie atop gravel, which lie atop basalt bedrock. These well-drained sediments are considered perfect for viticulture.

Wahluke Slope AVA

Established: 2006 as the state’s 8th appellation and a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA. Grapes: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Distinguishing features: The area lies on a broad, south-facing slope with

41

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

constant 8 percent grades, deep topsoil and good drainage. It has one of the driest, warmest climates in the state, allowing for nearly complete control of vine vigor and ripening through irrigation.

Lake Chelan AVA

Established: 2009 as the state’s 11th appellation and

a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA. Grapes: Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay Distinguishing features: Climate is moderated by the thermal effect of Lake Chelan. Soils have loaded with pumice and ash from volcanic eruptions, primarily

from Glacier Peak located to the west of the AVA.

Ancient Lakes AVA

Established: 2012 as the state’s 13th appellation and a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA. Grapes: Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux varieties. Distinguishing features:

Sixty-five different soil types in the AVA have been identified, most produced by the Missoula Glacial Floods. The most commons soils are fine, sandy loam that contribute to wines with higher acidity levels and, with reds, a greater tannic impact. — Sources: Washington State Wine Commission and AppellationAmerica.com.

2021 North Central Washington Wine Awards winners Superlative Winners

Best of Show, Best Red (Gold Medal) Burke Vineyard 2015 Syrah, Columbia Valley, Judges’ notes: Terry Burke and his family’s young project wowed the judging panel with this stunning two-barrel example of Syrah featuring estate grapes from the Royal Slope. In some ways, it’s not a complete surprise because in 2009 a Syrah from this growing region received only Washington state’s fourth 100-point score. This example of Royal Slope Syrah brings pleasing black and blue fruit aromas with sage that carry on through to the palate, featuring blackberry and black cherry with supple tannins and a layered finish with blueberry juice. It topped an impressive field of 21 Syrahs and continued to roll into the sweepstakes where it emerged as the best wine of the judging. Best White (Double Gold Medal)

Jones of Washington 2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley, $14.99 (840 cases) Judges’ notes: Some have nicknamed the Ancient Lakes as “the Chablis of Washington” because there’s seemingly pixie dust at play within the caliche soils in this portion of the Columbia Basin. In the hands of Victor Palencia, winemaker for Wine Press Northwest magazine’s 2019 Pacific Northwest’s Winery of the Year, most any wine, but particularly whites, earns praise from judges and consumers alike. His example of Sauvignon Blanc hails from the Jones family’s Lauzier Vineyard on the Beezley Hills northeast of Quincy, and it is redolent of green apple and stone fruit with a whiff

Look for an amazing collection of erratics on the eye-popping drive through McNeil Canyon Road towards Chelan. Another feature leftover from the Ice Age is Dry Falls. The largest waterfall known on the earth once cascaded over the sheer basalt cliffs of Dry Falls. These days, the falls themselves are, well, dry. But they still offer plenty of beauty and history to soak in. The 400-foot-high, 3.5-milelong precipice dried up about 15,000 years ago, but in its prime it was 10 times the size of Niagara Falls.

artway between Wenatchee and Leavenworth, tucked between orchards and towering pines, is the charming, riverside town of Cashmere. With a quaint downtown that's as sweet as its signature candy shop, Cashmere is a must-see. Spend some time in the trees and sunlight, riding the white waters of the Wenatchee River, zooming down Devil’s Gulch — known as one of the best mountain biking trails in the state — or hiking one of the many trails just outside of town. Afterward, you can check out one of Cashmere’s many antique stores or take a tour (and snag some samples) at the Aplets &

Cotlets candy factory. You can also catch the Chelan County Fair and the Wenatchee River Bluegrass Festival when they come through town. At the Cashmere Museum & Pioneer Village, you can find one of the finest collections of Native American and archaeological artifacts in the Northwest. The Pioneer Village — a small section of land with 20 original pioneer buildings filled with authentic furniture and tools — is worth the trip on its own. Looking for more? Don’t forget to take time to walk downtown or check out the 9/11 Spirit of America Memorial at Riverside Park.

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

World photo/Don Seabrook Clendon Allen, Peshastin, working for the Yakama Nation at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, rolls up netting that protects juvenile coho salmon from birds. He said the hatchery releases 700,000 of the five-inch fish late neat the hatchery. Craig Thomas, Assistant Manager at the hatchery said they release 1.2 million spring Chinook as well.

Leavenworth “A burgeoning winery scene has brought a Pinotand-brie refinement to the brats-and-brews style of this Bavarian-inspired village, just east of the Cascades.” — National Geographic Adventure magazine Surrounded by rugged mountain landscapes, Leavenworth is a place outside of time. The small tourist-town simply oozes Old World charm. Visitors from around the world go out of their way to visit the small Bavarianstyle village in the Northwestern United States. It wasn't always this way, however. The success of

Leavenworth Washington is a testament to the hard work, determination and creativity of its early residents. In the early 1960s, Leavenworth was no more than a run-down mill town on the verge of becoming a ghost town. Rather than sit back and accept their fate, the town leaders came up with a plan — to harness the power of the areas' beautiful, alpine location and draw in tourists from around the globe. The “little village that could” now greets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There’s almost never a weekend without entertain-

ment of some sort — the town has more than two dozen public festivals each year — and if you happen to visit on a day that isn’t filled with festivity, there is still more than enough to keep you occupied.

Things to do

Travel westward on Highway 2 and you will find plenty of fruit stands and wineries. Smallwood’s Harvest in nearby Peshastin offers a huge petting zoo, a gift shop and fruit stand, and is a must-stop location for anyone with kids in tow. Just down the road, Prey’s Fruit

Stand is also worth a visit. For a bit more adventure, take a ride on the whitewater of the Wenatchee River or watch the rapids as they roar through Tumwater Canyon. The dam is a good spot to see kayakers and leaping salmon. If you are interested in rafting, you can find a list of rafting companies on the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce website: leavenworth.org. To the north, Lake Wenatchee’s sparkling waters are perfect for an afternoon of windsurfing or resting on the shore for a picnic. To the south, the Alpine Lakes Wil-

derness is an excellent spot for a daytime hike. Grab a permit at the trailhead or check in with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for an overnight permit. If you are looking for something tamer, an easy stroll along Icicle Creek at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is also a great choice. The hatchery releases 1.6 million salmon each year, so they can make the 500-mile journey back to the Pacific Ocean. It is open year-round and offers tours, fish and wildlife viewing, and picnic grounds.

seum in downtown Leavenworth. The museum, which has been featured on network television and newspapers across the U.S. and Europe, is all it’s cracked up to be. This quirky museum features informational exhibits, such as the top five ways to crack a nut, nutcracker themed activities for children and contains over 7,000 nutcrackers originating from over 50 countries. If you are in the area, make sure to drop by during Nutcracker Day, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

More hikes

Icicle Gorge Trail, near Leavenworth: This easily accessible trail is perfect

for beginners and families. Mostly flat, the 4-mile trail loops around Icicle Creek, crossing the scenic Icicle Gorge. You can find it about 16 miles up Icicle Road from Leavenworth. Penstock Pipeline Trail, near Leavenworth: The trailhead for this one is a bit unusual — right on top of an old, historic bridge. The trail itself is an easy hike with an unusual start over a historic bridge that crosses the Wenatchee River. If you are lucky, you may spot Coho salmon spawning in the waters below. The three-mile, back-and-forth hike offers great views and fabulous fall colors along the river, and access to some good beaches if the weather is still hot enough for a dip.

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

World photo/Don Seabrook Betsy Steele, left, and Jane Provo point out birds flying over Icicle River from their raft during the Leavenworth Bird Fest in 2015.

Feel the rush: Whitewater rafting on the Wenatchee River

L

ooking for adventure? There's nothing quite like rush you'll get, riding the rapids of the Wenatchee River. Dubbed “one of the most popular whitewater runs in the state” by Wenatchee Outdoors, the short stretch of water between Leavenworth and Cashmere is a scenic whirlwind of roaring class two and three rapids. The stretch also offers convenient, quick shuttling, and easy access to the river. Combine that with the warm sun-

shine found during the spring melt-off season and you have a recipe for a world-class run. Many professional rafting companies can be found in the area — more than a dozen each year. They run the river for the entire spring season and will feed you and bus you back to where you started. To find them, check outdoor stores and local listings in the Wenatchee and upper Wenatchee Valley communities, including the Leavenworth area.

Columbia Basin: A region of natural and industrial wonders

World photo/Mike Bonnicksen Nicholas Atherton, at right, rides a scooter on a new boat dock as he checks out the new on-island boat launch with his dad Derrick and friend Jerett Rodwell in Riverbend Park at Crescent Bar. The Atherton’s of Maple Valley, have been coming to the island for 30 years, where family members have a home.

The Columbia Basin

“Forged by ancient lava flows and then scoured by the Lake Missoula Ice Age Floods, Grant County has some of the most uncommon and beautiful topography found anywhere on Planet Earth. With more than 140 lakes and reservoirs Grant County offers world-class fishing, hunting, hiking trails and camping.” — tourgrantcounty.com Spread across the southwestern half of the state, the Columbia Basin is a vast region filled with broad swatches of blue sky, deep coulees and volcanic buttes. Though the region is best known for its hydropower and crops, it is so much more than that. The Columbia

Basin of Washington is home to unique natural landmarks, historic sites and plenty of options for entertainment. Dams are the life support of the Basin, bringing much-needed water to crops and — along with the region’s many wind farms — providing a low-cost power source that serves clients around the world. More than 670,000 acres of the Columbia Basin are irrigated and the region is known for growing fruit, onions, beans, potatoes and more.

County’s website, the Gorge Amphitheatre plays host to world-renowned performers — and of course, spectacular views. Seated on the lip of the Columbia River, it is a concert venue like no other, with seating for 20,000 and breathtaking views of sheer basalt cliffs.

Falls near Quincy: The Ancient Lakes Loop Trail is a popular hiking spot for adventurers. The 4.6 miles of trail is set in a dramatic landscape of high plateaus, steep cliffs and deep canyons. At the end of your hike, you will be rewarded by a desert oasis — the Ancient Lakes and falls. The area is also a perfect spot for mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding and hunting. Take a mud bath on the shores of Soap Lake: The mineral-rich water of Soap Lake has drawn tourists since the early 1900s for its reported medicinal properties. It is said that rival tribes would call a truce when visiting the area to bathe. While you may not have to call a truce with other swimmers, you can still enjoy a rejuvenating dip or lather yourself in frothy mud. Get up close with a giant wind turbine: Chances are, you’ve seen wind farms while driving through Washington state. But you may not realize just how big those turbines really are. If you visit Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center on Whiskey Dick Mountain, you will have a

chance to get up close and personal with one of the best clean, renewable energy producers around. Sip a little wine: Washington is known for its wine and Grant County produces some of the best of it. If you are into wine, you won’t want to miss the Jones of Washington tasting room in Quincy — or any of the other wineries and microbreweries located throughout the region. Hang 10 on the surfing simulator: Moses Lake’s Surf ‘n’ Slide Water Park, with its surfing simulator, two 200-foot-long water slides, and 300-foot Lazy River is a must-visit for any water lover. Live the island life at Crescent Bar: At Crescent

Bar you’ll find a resort, golf, tennis, fishing and water sports. Camping is also available on the shores of the Columbia. Check out the stampeding metal ponies: Wild Horse Monument sits on the crest of a hill roughly two miles east of the Vantage Bridge. Known as “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies,” the collection of sculptures is visible from the freeway, but curious visitors can also take a quarter-mile hike to view the ponies up close. Wanapum Heritage Center: Located next to Priest Rapids Dam about five miles south of Mattawa, the Heritage Center teaches visitors about the history and culture of the Wanapum people. It

is temporarily closed until further notice. Lake Lenore Caves: Explore the shallow caves on the shores of Lenore Lake and just north of Soap Lakes above Highway 17. Ephrata’s Sage-N-Sun Festival: If you are visiting Grant County on the second weekend of June, the Sage-NSun Festival promises a good time. The family-friendly event features activities, parades, live music, and good food. Ginko Petrified Forest State Park: Check out the petrified wood — Washington’s official state gem — at Ginko Petrified Forest State Park. The park is known for its rare, fossilized Ginko trees and features more than 30 varieties of petrified wood. The Feathers: Watch rock climbers scale other-worldly basalt columns at the Feathers, a popular rock-climbing spot west of George near the rim of Frenchman Coulee. Play a round of golf: Lakeview Golf & Country Club is home to an 18-hole course located in Soap Lake. The course, which opened in 1950, features 6,638 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71.

pen your eyes and take a look around — you never know what you might find. Here in North Central Washington, wildlife is all around you, you just have to know where to look. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a black bear through the trees or spot an osprey dive into a river for a midday snack. The region holds an abundance of wildlife for viewing. You can find eagles and osprey along the Columbia River and its tributaries, bighorn sheep along Highway 97/A north of Wenatchee and deer pretty much anywhere. Stay long enough and look hard enough and you might even have a chance to watch the mountain goats that scale the sheer cliffs near the upper Wenatchee River, Entiat and Methow River valleys. Here are some tried-andtrue spots for wildlife:

Lake Chelan

I

t isn't really summer without a trip to Lake Chelan. It has everything you could want from a summer resort town. Sandy beaches, sunny skies, award winning wineries and plenty of outdoor recreation -what's not to love? Known as “tsill-anne,” or “deep-water” by local Native American tribes, Lake Chelan is the third-deepest lake in North America. It is the perfect place to go boating, swimming, or fishing. You can also hike, bike or sun-bathe along the lake’s edge. Downtown, you can stroll past Chelan’s many restaurants, bars and shops. Don Morse Park is an easy walking distance from downtown and is among the most popular spots on the lake. The park’s 2,000 feet of waterfront and sandy beaches is a great place to buy a snack, rent a boat, play volleyball or take your kids to the playground. Chelan Riverwalk Park, just off downtown, has a mile-long scenic loop trail and is an easyway to get to the Woodin Avenue Bridge that crosses the Chelan River by historic Campbell’s Resort. You'll also find there a part of the original Lady of the Lake ferryboat. At 60 years old, the 65-footlong Lady was salvaged in 2001 and restored seven years later. Her pilot house — complete with captain’s wheel — sits at the edge of the park as a monument,

gazing out across the lake she once patrolled.

Other things to do around Lake Chelan

Find your favorite fruit: Orchards of world-class tree-fruit speckle the slopes of Lake Chelan. People can stop by any of the numerous fruit stands around the lake to taste their produce. Test your courage at Slidewaters: Visitors can zip down the thrilling Purple Haze water slide, float on the Lazy River, splash around in the kid-friendly Aqua Zoo. See slidewaterswaterpark. com. Bay watch: People can hang out by the bay and take a leap off the swimming dock at Manson Bay Park. Don’t feel like swimming? You can find plenty of eateries along Manson’s quaint main street. Try your luck: Located in Manson, the Mill Bay Casino is a hot-spot for gambling and offers slot machines, card and table games, and big-name concerts, dancing and dining. See colvillecasinos.com. Outdoors: The options for outdoor recreation around Lake Chelan are nearly limitless. Hiking, biking or various water sports are obvious choices. You can also check out the nearby Beebe Springs Natural Area — a birdwatcher’s oasis with trails through desert scrub and rugged rocky hillsides.

to arrive is to take the ferry; the Lady of the Lake makes daily trips between Stehekin and Chelan from May 1 to Oct. 16. Once you get there, Stehekin offers lodging, food, camping, fishing, boating and wildlife.

WENATCHEE VALLEY VISITORS GUIDE | SPRING & SUMMER 2022

World file photo/Don Seabrook Snow each year closes the North Cascades Highway — also known as Highway 20 — until snow crews reopen it in April or May. It takes weeks to move winter’s snow off of 34 miles of highway between Mazama and Newhalem.

Methow Valley Winthrop

Take a trip back in time as you enter Winthrop, a small town preserved to look like the wild west and located at the northern end of the Methow Valley. Winthrop’s rustic downtown features wooden sidewalks and the throw-back storefronts of shops and restaurants. Nearby, you can swap your cowboy boots for hiking boots and adventure along more than 120 miles of trails. The trails and 11 trailheads are free to use in the summer. Learn more at methowtrails. com.

Mazama

Tucked away in the upper-end of Methow Valley and buried within the

rugged cascades, Mazama is a remote, pine-scented town full of charm and perfect for exploration. Go for mountain hikes, take a horseback ride through the Cascades or enjoy any of the other myriad of activities offered in the area, including hot air ballooning, rafting, bird-watching, and golfing.

Twisp

Situated in the heart of Methow Valley, Twisp is a vacation destination popular among tourists. It is also where the locals do business, take care of chores and take part in the arts. Visit the beautiful Riverside Park or check out the art exhibits at Confluence Gallery. Downtown, the Merc Playhouse

puts on large-scale theatrical productions, as well as provides space for music, lectures and dance performances. TwispWorks is another worthwhile place to check out. The 6.5 acre campus offers open artist studios and classes, a dye garden, historical listening posts and the Methow Valley Interpretive Center, which features the valley’s natural surroundings and its native peoples.

Highway 20

The North Cascades Highway is a beautiful road and a favorite among motorcyclists who love to dive into its scenic, hairpin curves. Snows close Highway 20 in the late fall. It usually reopens in April or May.

eautiful and wild, Okanogan County stretches across the top edge of the United States. It is the largest county in Washington state, and what it lacks in population density, it makes up for in natural beauty. Brewster’s Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and fireworks on the Columbia River, is also worth a look. In Pateros the annual Apple Pie Jamboree on the third weekend of July is a great chance to pick up a slice while soaking in the local scene. Omak

Okanogan County’s largest town also holds its largest event, the Omak Stampede & World Famous Suicide Race, on Aug. 13-16. The Stampede fills an entire weekend with western-style entertainment, including a world-class rodeo, Indian Encampment and Pow Wow, and a Western and Native art show. The suicide race is a horse race in which riders speed from the starting line down the bluff to the river. From there, they swim or wade across and then gallop to the finish line. In the off-season, the Stampede arena is home to the Mexican and junior rodeos. Learn more at omakstampede.org.
