Friends in Music Jenaesha Iwaasa, a cellist, and Katrina Whitman, a violist, met while taking lessons at Icicle Creek. Over the years, they have performed together in the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony and Summer Symphony, the Wenatchee Valley Symphony, and string and chamber camps at Central Washington University. The two friends came to WVC as Running Start students and graduated with their high school diplomas and WVC transfer degrees in June. Both received substantial scholarships to continue their music education at four-year schools this fall. Jenaesha has been accepted to the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and Whitman has been accepted to Westmont in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jenaesha will have the opportunity to study with cellist Norman Fischer. She received one of two Roy W. Hill Music Scholarships and the Nick Schoffen Music Scholarship from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, the Wenatchee Valley Teachers Association Scholarship, a Community Involvement

Scholarship and the Top Ten Scholarship from the Apple Blossom Festival, and a four-year renewable $50,000 scholarship from Rice University. Jenaesha has played the cello since she was eight years old and took lessons from local music instructor Kara Hunnicutt, Craig Weaver from the Twisp/Methow area, Kevin Krentz from Seattle and Sally Singer Tuttle. As a WVC student, she studied music theory with her father, music director Juel Iwaasa. At twelve years old, she was asked by an instructor whether she had considered playing the cello as a career. She now provides music lessons herself, teaching both piano and cello, but she’s keeping her career options open. “I’m ready for whatever opportunities are available,” she said. “I’m happy to see where going to Rice takes me.” Katrina will have the opportunity to study with violist Helen Callus at Westmont. Katrina received the Roy W. Hill Music Scholarship from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and an $11,000 per year music major scholarship from Westmont. Encouraged by her mother, who is a harpist, Katrina began playing the viola when she was six. She has studied at Icicle Creek in Leavenworth with Jennifer Caine and at Central Washington University with Tim Betts. Her goal is to teach at a university or college and perform in a residential quartet. “Music is my passion,” she said. “It’s what I’m good at, what I love to do.”

Both musicians encourage potential music students to take the WVC music theory course. “Consider it if you want to perform music as part of your career,” Jenaesha said. “Theory helps your instruction; instruction helps your theory.”

A Running Start Running Start helped recent Wenatchee Valley College at Omak and Okanogan High School graduate, Antonio Montez, achieve his educational goals. “The (WVC) instructors teach multiple classes, so you see them from year to year,” Antonio said. “Plus, the small classes really help foster discussion.” However, he did admit it was sometimes difficult to leave his high school friends. “Some of my friends gave me a hard time, but now those same friends are wishing they had taken the opportunity,” he said. “You’re ahead of the game for school. Overall, it’s so worth it. At 18, I’ve already received my two-year degree.” While a student at WVC at Omak, Antonio served as sophomore representative for student government and was a member of the chess club. He also played lead guitar in the band Forecast and volunteered in the Civil Air Patrol. Antonio spent the summer in basic training for the National Guard Reserve. This winter he’ll enroll in the Eastern Washington University ROTC program and estimated he could become a commissioned officer by age 20 or 21. Antonio is both a second-generation WVC graduate and a fifth generation Eagle. His mother graduated from WVC and transferred to EWU. “It’s cool to follow in the footsteps of my mom,” he said. “I wanted a jump-start on my career and I could start close to home in Okanogan.”

Staying Strong

After retiring from a 20-year service in the U.S. Army, Edward Aguigui and his wife Annette decided to start a new adventure—in Alaska. During a stop in Washington to visit family, however, the Aguiguis discovered two foster boys who needed a home. Their new adventure, rather than beginning in Alaska, began in Washington. While Edward worked as a construction manager, Annette stayed home. In 2009, the construction industry halted and Edward was without work. “Never before in the history of our family, now seven children strong, had Ed been without a job,” said Annette. Edward discovered that he would qualify for educational funding through a new Veterans Administration program designed for those who served in the military after 9/11. “This was like a dream come true for me, because I had always wanted to become a nurse but put that dream on the back burner to be able to care for my family,” Annette said. “As we put the pieces together of how to make this school thing work, we could see the benefit it would be in the long run for not only us but for our whole family.” The Aguiguis worked hard at their prerequisite courses, earning places on the WVC President’s List and Dean’s List, and in the Phi Theta Kappa honors society. They applied for the WVC nursing program in 2011. Sadly, they received their acceptance letter while preparing for the funeral of their 24-year-old daughter-in-law and unborn grandson.

“We pushed through our grief and accepted our seats in the nursing program,” Annette said. Just before their first comprehensive final in the nursing program, the Aguiguis received more shattering news: their son had been arrested on murder charges in Georgia. “There are no parenting books that can ever prepare you for the shock of that call,” said Annette. Once again, they considered stopping their education, and once again, they persevered. “The next morning, we headed to Wenatchee Valley College to take exams that could very well have been the end of the road had we failed them,” she said. “Needless to say, we did not fail nor have we failed since that awful day.” Edward and Annette both served as representatives on the Student Nurses of Wenatchee (SNOW) club board and assisted with Opportunity Grant workshops. In June, they graduated with honors and were the recipients of the WVC President’s Medal for academic achievement, leadership and service. Following graduation, they began registered nursing internships at Confluence Health. Both hope to work with veterans at military hospitals in the future. “As we pick up the pieces of life, we can see just how important our educational pursuits have been during this time,” Annette said. “In the future, we will use our story to encourage those who face difficult times and tough decisions.”
