WELCOME TO WEST CLEWES Good afternoon all and welcome to West Clewes for this Toolstation Western League First Divison Boxing Day clash between Welton Rovers and today’s visitors, Radstock Town. We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful day yesterday, and that today brings the opportunity for you to continue the festivities in the company of friends. Much like everything at the moment, there’s a very di erent feel to this year’s Boxing Day football, with us sadly not permitted to celebrate in the way we usually would. Of course, the most important thing is that we’re all here and healthy, and I’m sure, whatever your allegiances today, we’re all most grateful for that. There’s a lot of uncertainty to how our league seasons will progress in 2021. The Somerset County League has been adjourned until mid-January at the earliest, and Western League clubs have been given the option to cease playing matches until a general improvement in the Coronavirus situation. Though it’s impossible to know what this means for the rest of our season, it’s very clear that our league administrators are attempting to make sensible decisions which provide comfortable situations and exibility for all clubs. Though there’s been no competitive football at West Clewes for over 2 months, the team has been busy since football has been permitted again. Friendly matches have been played against higher division opposition, in the form of Shepton Mallet and Bristol Manor Farm, and the squad has been added to. Young mid elder Sonny Burbidge has signed from Radstock Town, and the First Division’s joint leading goalscorer, Callum Ham (formerly of Cheddar) adds yet more repower to Rovers’ impressive frontline.

Rovers were top of the tree at Christmas, and they’ll need a great performance this afternoon to ensure they still are at the close of 2020. It’s 6 years since Welton won a Boxing Day match, with Radstock having won all 3 encounters since, and Rovers having not even scored a goal. A Rovers win this afternoon will be one change in 2020 that the Green Army will be happy to see!

The club’s o cial establishment year, as recorded by the FA was 1895 but there is convincing evidence that indicates a Radstock team was actively competing against other local villages up to 35 years before that in 1860. The club was closely associated with the local mining and railway industry, where the majority of the team were recruited from. The club rst competed in the Western League in 1897 but resigned at the end of 1910/11 season to play in the Somerset League. The club next appear in the Western League after the First World War and the 1920’s proved a particularly successful period for the team, in fact in 1923/24 the team nished as runners up to Lovell’s Athletic, who nished six points ahead of them, to this day the 'miners' highest nishing position in the Western league. The club dropped out of the league at the end of the 59/60 season and along with Clandown and Frome Town joined the Wiltshire Premier League, this was a particularly successful period for the club winning the championships in both 1965/66 and 66/67. The club moved to the Somerset County League in 1971 and again tasted success winning the championship twice in 76/77 and 78/79, when they were also promoted back to the Great Mills Western League rst division. This saw a rollercoaster 15 years as under Steve Gay the club were promoted to the Premier but then came a free-fall whereby the mid-90s Radstock were playing football at their lowest ever level, in the second rung of the County League. The appointment of Nigel Bryant galvanised the club and his in uence saw a period of rebuilding, and the club was back in the Western League by 2004. The club quickly found itself back in the Premier Division, where for nearly a decade they showed great resolve to ght o relegation. Unfortunately they couldn’t manage that in 13/14 and were demoted back to the First Division, where they have remained since. Radstock impressed last season, and were in 6th place in the league table when the season was curtailed abruptly. Nathan Farquharson was installed as the Miners’ manager after the outgoing Brett Partner accepted a position at Bristol City. Farquharson departed after just a few months in the job, and his assistant Ryan Child has since stepped in to the hot seat.

SPONSOR OF WELTON ROVERS FOOTBALL CLUB

Formed at the end of the 19th century, Welton Rovers are ve time winners of the Western League and its longest serving members. Rovers’ relationship with the Western League began in the 1903/04 season. The club’s rst few decades saw them triumph in multiple Somerset Senior Cups, and win their rst Western League title in 1912, but a failed attempt at professionalism would see the club go bankrupt and unable to compete in the 1923/24 season. This blip is the only break in Welton’s membership of the Western League from 1903 to the modern-day, the club holding the dubious honour of having never been relegated — or promoted — outside of the two division set-up. In the years following World War 2, Welton built the most successful Amateur side in the area with four consecutive Amateur Cup victories, and in Brian Barker, Keith Simmons and Eddie Attwood, the best forward line for miles around. Rovers’ golden period came in the mid-1960s following the appointment, in 1963, of the club’s rst o cial manager, former Hudders eld Town and Bristol City striker Arnold Rodgers, and the return to professionalism. Welton became only the second club to win the Western League three times in a row — after Portsmouth FC— at the turn of the century, with wins in ’65, ’66 (undefeated!) and ’67. Potent throughout the time was the club’s record goalscorer, Ian Henderson, who scored 321 goals in his spells with Welton. Rovers’ triumphs brought with them an in ated reputation and showpiece matches, with the club’s best ever FA Cup performance seeing them face AFC Bournemouth (then known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic) in 1966 as well as exotic away days for end of season matches against a Guernsey XI in 1965 and to the Costa Brava the following year. As is often the case, Welton’s successes brought excesses and nancial problems, and following the departure of Rodgers and 10 of his rst-team squad, to Bath City, a period of uncertainty and mediocrity followed. That was until Dave Stone took the managerial reigns in 1971 and led Welton to their fourth, and most recent, league title in the 73/74 season. Other showcases of the early ‘70s would see Juventus and Leeds United legend John Charles play and score at West Clewes for Merhyr Tyd l in the FA Trophy, and a Rothmans Cup nal against now League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

The tail end of the 20th century saw Welton trade promotions and relegations, creating many a club legend along the way. Managers such as Geo Elliott and Steve Coles brought good times, while legendary players like Malcolm Beck and Graham Withey commanded transfer fees to move on to Football League clubs. The 1980s saw huge improvements to facilities with the fl

The 1990s started with possibly the club’s most ridiculous season, nishing rock bottom of the Premier Division and getting through 3 managers. The third of which, Peter De Sisto, brought former Football League players Alan Biley and Gary Stanley to the club, but could only win 3 games all season. As bad as the decade began, it ended on a high with Rovers’ locally assembled side winning promotion back to the Premier Division, under the tutelage of Adie Britton. The past two decades have brought plenty of good times for Rovers’ large and vociferous support, known as the Green Army. In 2006, Chris Mountford led Welton to their most successful season since the 1970s, with a 4th place Premier Division nish and Les Phillips Cup Semi-Final. Then, under Mark Harrington in 2010, Rovers won the Somerset Premier Cup for the rst time, at Huish Park. A semi- nal victory against Yeovil Town landed Rovers a nal with Bridgwater Town, who they defeated on penalties to claim the silverware. That side contained Nick Beaverstock, the man who would lead the Greens to their next taste of glory — as manager — when they won promotion to the Western League Premier Division in 2015. Beaverstock would go on to become the Rovers manager to take charge of the second highest number of matches, totalling 223 after a caretaker spell last season.

The club began the 2019/20 season with Jared Greenhalgh at the helm, but this did not bring the anticipated results, and shortly after Christmas the manager and club parted ways by mutual agreement. After a rigorous application process, Tom Smith and his assistant Will Justin took the helm, but before they could make their mark, Coronavirus caused the curtailment of the season. The Summer of 2020 has seen huge e orts to bring together a strong and exciting squad to push Rovers forward into the 2020s. fi
