This programme is suited to anyone wanting to start work in the field of tourism. You will gain the foundation skills necessary for entry into this industry, both in New Zealand and overseas. Get hands-on experience with a class field trip and many local visitor attractions.

Focus on the business side of tourism. Take part in a class field trip to Queenstown. Plus visit local attractions. Learn hands-on. This course builds on the Level 3 Certificate in Tourism and Travel. Programme overview

New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel Level 5 Start: March 2017 Length: 34 weeks, full-time Campus: Church Street, Wellington CBD

Learn about current business practice, event planning and people development. Travel to a regional destination to learn first-hand from local tourism providers. Study the industry, business systems and business development. Benefit from small classes. Learn from experienced tutors. Programme overview > Learn about the different aspects of the tourism industry and its importance to New Zealand and the economy > Develop expertise in planning an event > Grow your marketing and communications skills > Participate in a field trip to investigate how a region develops and promotes its tourism products and services > Develop business plans for new enterprise > Learn how the development of people and systems can contribute to business success Entry criteria NCEA Level 3, with three approved subjects at level 3, made up of 14 credits each OR two approved subjects at level 3, made up of 14 credits each and a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 in Tourism. Literacy – 10 credits at level 2 or above (as specified on the NZQA list), made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing and NCEA Level 1 numeracy requirement. Or achieve a level 4 qualification in a related field (for example – NZ Certificate in Tourism and Travel Level 4), or relevant personal, practical, professional or educational experience. You'll learn through role-plays of customer interactions. Benefit from small, friendly classes. Wear a professional uniform. See the industry in action by visiting hotels and other establishments. Enter the exciting world of hotels. Work in New Zealand and overseas with an internationally-recognised qualification. This is the next step up from the Level 3 certificate and is focused on hotel reception. You'll gain specialist skills to work in hotels. Programme overview > Learn how to operate software used in the hotel industry > Complete practical work and gain real insight into working in a hotel; this includes housekeeping, portering, and reception > Learn specific arrival, departure and reservations processes for hotels Entry criteria NCEA Level 1 numeracy and literacy. Career opportunities Employment opportunities exist in the front office of hotels, and there is the opportunity to travel overseas (with an internationally recognised City and Guilds qualification). Be a sole charge receptionist or work as part of a larger hotel team.

You can find work in hotel or hospitality reception or transfer your skills and knowledge to many other areas of customer service and general business administration.

Tourism related majors: Hospitality Management Demand for Hospitality Management graduates continues to increase in New Zealand and overseas. This major adds specialist knowledge and skill in food and beverage and accommodation to a broad foundation of business management, which opens up an assortment of career paths within a dynamic and vibrant industry as well as adjunct service providers. Event Management Create and manage successful events as well as developing specialist skills to ensure that entertainment, conferences and marketing events run smoothly.

Programme overview You will develop a breadth of business knowledge and expertise including a historical perspective of business development in New Zealand and an understanding of multicultural influences on business operation. You will gain the understanding necessary to implement sustainable focused business practices. Your programme of study will enable you to be part of a co-operative education project which will see you graduate ready for employment, able to make an immediate contribution to the business environment. Majors include Hospitality Management, Event Management, Accounting, Human Resources, Sales and Marketing and Strategic Management. Students will also be able to complete a double major. Human Resources Management New Zealand business has a constant need for qualified human resource managers, who are responsible for an organisation’s workforce in both public and private sectors. Sales and Marketing Sales and marketing management could see you with a key role in planning, directing and developing the promotion and sale of an organisation’s goods and services. Strategic Management As a professional in strategic management you will play a part in the analyses of major initiatives taken by senior management in many areas of both private and public sectors.
