WELLS HARBOR SHELLFISH LAB

There’s something new at Wells Harbor… the Wells Harbor Shellfish Lab had their soft opening last summer .

Thanks to Harbormaster Michael Yorke, who applied for a grant from local skylight business Velux, plus a lot of assistance from local volunteers, the Shellfish Lab houses tanks containing “seed clams” as well as a touch tank housing Starfish, Hermit Crabs and Horseshoe Crabs (see photo on right) .

The interior was decorated by resident photographers Matthew Rainey and Jen Lippe along with Matthew’s wife Nancy . As you can see from the pictures, they did a wonderful job

There is hope to have a student intern for the summer months to provide background information on life below the ocean .

WELLS FIRE MUSEUM

When the Wells Branch Fire Station was closed as an active station by the Town of Wells in 2020, past firefighters and members of the Wells Branch Fire Association asked the town if they could repurpose the building instead of tearing it down . After getting their blessing, and with hundreds of volunteer hours of work, the result is the Wells Fire Museum which opened its doors in June 2023 .

Staffed by volunteers, and totally relying on donations, the Museum welcomed over 250 visitors in their inaugural season which only ran for a few months .

In 2024, the plan is to open in late April and run through the end of September . Depending on the availability of volunteers, the hope is to be open on Monday evenings from 5:00-8:00pm, Wednesday afternoons from noon3:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am2:00pm . Private tours are also available .

In addition to viewing the actual Fire Station, which opened in 1956, visitors will find everything from three pieces of apparatus ranging from the early 1900’s through the 1950’s, equipment from the late 1800’s to the present, numerous pictures, newspaper clippings, a working alarm system from the mid 1900’s and many other items . T-shirts, hats and decals are available for purchase . There is something for everyone from children to adults

7 MILES OF OCEANFRONT RECREATION

In the Town of Wells, there are four beautiful sandy beaches . Wells Beach, Crescent Beach and Drakes Island Beach are open to the public, while Moody Beach is private

LIFEGUARDS are on duty seven days a week from July 4 through Labor Day Prior to July 4 and after Labor Day, they are on duty for weekends .

PUBLIC RESTROOMS are available seven days a week Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day .

PUBLIC PARKING LOTS are located at the end of Mile Road; the Eastern Shore at the end of Atlantic Avenue; the Jetty and Gross Lot at Drakes Island and the Gold Ribbon Lot on Webhannet Drive . Fees for parking apply from 8:00am-6:00pm 5/25/2024 through 10/14/2024 . Lots are open from 6:00am-11:00pm daily . All beach lots close at 11:00pm and are locked by the Wells Police Department . Overnight parking is prohibited .

PARKING FEES Pay and Display Meters . $5 per hour, all day (8:00am-6:00pm), at all lots RV’s or campers are allowed at Eastern Shore and Gross Lot only The Pay and Display Meters will accept credit and debit cards as well as coins . DOGS are restricted from the beach areas from 8:00am to 6:00pm from June 16 to September 15 . After 6:00pm to 8:00am, dogs are allowed on the beach and must be on a leash and under the charge of a responsible person Disposal bags and containers for dog waste are located at many of the beach entrances Exceptions: Does not apply to seeing eye dogs or other dogs assisting an individual with a disability.

RACHEL CARSON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

SCHOOLHOUSE DIVISION NO. 9 was built by the Town of Wells between 1899-1901 on a half acre of land at a total cost of $848 .72 . The Town restored the site in 1976 . It stands today as it did over 100 years ago The Schoolhouse is located on Route 9 about five miles from Route 109 Tours of the Schoolhouse are by appointment only . GETTING MARRIED IN MAINE

HOW TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE

Marriage licenses are issued at the town or city level . The couple must visit the town office in person to apply for the marriage license

• If both of you are residents of the state of Maine, you should both apply at the town office where at least one of you is a resident If you are residents of different Maine towns, you both may apply in one town or the other – you do not need to apply separately in each town .

• If one of you is from out of state, then both of you should apply in the town where one holds residency

• If neither of you is a resident of Maine, then you may apply in any Maine town office . It need not be the same town where you plan to be married You can apply for your marriage license at the Wells Town Hall Clerks Office located at 208 Sanford Road, Route 109 in Wells . Hours: 9:00am-3:30pm, Mon – Fri

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days and can only be used within the State of Maine

There is no waiting period from the time your license is issued until your wedding can take place . The person performing the ceremony is responsible for filing the marriage certificate with the town office that issued the marriage license

REQUIREMENTS

To obtain a marriage license:

• Photo ID such as a driver’s license may be required

• If this is not the first marriage for one of you, bring a certified copy (raised seal) of the divorce form or death certificate of the last spouse

• Applicants must be over 18 years old . Written parental consent is required for an applicant under 18 Written parental consent and written

consent of a judge are required for an applicant under 16 .

• No blood test is required

• You may want to check with the municipal clerk where you are filing beforehand to find out what that municipality’s policies are

• Same sex marriages are legal in Maine

• Two witnesses are required .

OFFICIANTS

The following individuals are authorized to perform marriages in Maine:

• Ordained ministers of the gospel .

• A person licensed to preach by an association of ministers, religious seminary or ecclesiastical body .

• Judges or justices (residents of Maine only) .

• Lawyers admitted to the Maine Bar (residents of Maine only)

• Maine Notaries .

Maine does not have Justices of the Peace . Out-of-state Notaries and Justices of the Peace cannot officiate weddings in Maine .
