about Cancer Support WA For 30 years, Cancer Support WA has helped and supported many thousands of Western Australians with cancer to achieve wellness, healing and improve their outcomes from cancer. Cancer Support WA is the Western Australian pioneer of the “wellness approach” to cancer and continues to be a leading authority on cancer wellness strategies for cancer.

mission To empower and support individuals, families and the community toward wellness, healing and sustainable health.

The wellness approach integrates wellbeing practices and natural therapies into a holistic cancer treatment program with the goal of restoring balance and harmony to the mind, body and soul of the person with cancer. This approach is complementary to oncology and mainstream medicine, and includes the key areas of wellness which are: nutrition and optimal eating; meditation and the mind; exercise and good self–care; a sense of community; access to emotional and practical support; and access to balanced information about cancer, its treatment and implications. Cancer Support WA is the only Western Australian organisation that supports people with all types of cancer through all stages of the disease, respecting every individual’s treatment choices without judgement. We deliver our mission through an integrative offering of support services, a comprehensive wellness program and extensive resources, all of which are outlined in this Program and Services Guide for 2014. Cancer Support WA publishes the inspiring Wellness News magazine and resources such as Meeting the Challenge Handbook for people diagnosed with cancer. We also provide the Moss Reports which provides annually updated information on the all treatment options for every type of cancer; and distribute Cancer Care Packs to people newly diagnosed with cancer. Please see our new website for more information about Cancer Support WA and the services we provide.

message from the CEO 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of Cancer Support WA which is an incredible achievement for a local charity, especially considering the organisation was started by a small group of individuals with a shared vision of supporting people with cancer who were looking for wellness options and strategies and emotional support. In 1984 there was no other organisation like this in WA and little recognition that lifestyle was a factor in the development or treatment of cancer. Thirty years on, there is much evidence to support this approach and growing acceptance that diet, stress, habits, exercise, emotional wellbeing and the environment can play an enormous part in cancer and its treatment. While Cancer Support WA may have started from humble beginnings, the organisation has evolved into WA’s primary provider of cancer support services and the only provider of a truly holistic and comprehensive cancer wellness program. 30 years later our core mission hasn’t changed. At the heart of everything we do there is still this same healing intent – our dedicated team genuinely want the best for the individuals, families and the community we serve. I am pleased to launch our 2014 Program and Services Guide. Every component of the 2014 program is designed to help empower and support people to face the challenges of cancer and survivorship with hope and resilience and to provide real strategies which have worked for many thousands of people. Cancer can potentially be a positive turning point, and Cancer Support WA is here to help co–create a vibrant future of renewed vitality, health, healing and hope for all. Find commonality and strength in sharing experiences with other group members. Get inspired by others on the journey to regaining wellness. Tuesdays 10am–12pm weekly

Come along to this open group in which women get together in a relaxed atmosphere to share, converse, heal, meditate and have a good time whilst forging meaningful relationships – a safe place to explore your inner being and celebrate your growth and transformation in a meaningful way through caring and supporting each other.Facilitated by Cathy Brown who is joined by guest facilitators, sharing wisdom, insight and knowledge. Wednesdays 10am–12pm weekly

Grief & Loss Support Group

Carer’s Support Group

Cancer Support WA’s Grief and Loss Group offers hope and healing to anyone who has been bereaved or who has experienced a loss due to cancer. Grief is our natural response to losing someone or something that is deeply meaningful and precious to us. Grieving the loss of a loved one to cancer can be a profoundly isolating and personal experience. Yet shared in the presence of others whom recognise our hurt and sorrow, who have travelled this path themselves, there is an opportunity for support and reassurance steeped in care and compassion. 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. 1pm–3pm

8

Cancer Support WA holds support groups specifically for carers and families where participants can share their experiences and concerns and gain emotional and practical support from others. Carer’s often don’t have the opportunity to put their needs first or to access the support they need to sustain their own wellbeing and self–care. This group is run at the same time as our Cancer Wellness Support Group and provides an opportunity for carer’s to meet separately to openly share, support each other and participate in nurturing self–care. Tuesdays 10am–12pm fortnightly

April Guest Speaker

Christine Morrison: Music to soothe the soul Christine Morrison is a unique Australian musician, sound healer, composer and teacher. Christine’s life changed forever in 1996 when she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue. She was guided to work with sound and colour, and found that composing music played an enormous part in her recovery. She discovered that other people also responded deeply to her music, enjoying the same benefits of healing, relaxation and discovery of their own untapped potential that she herself enjoyed. Today Christine travels across Australia and Japan conducting workshops, retreats, individual sessions and concerts. Through the universal languages of sound, music and colour, she helps people know and befriend their own hearts, always with great gentleness and compassion. Her guiding passion is the joy of supporting other people to make the changes they need and to connect deeply with the wisdom of their souls and hearts. In this special session, Christine shares how she used her voice and music to clear and align her energy to bring her whole being back to a balanced healthy state. 6pm–8pm, Tuesday 1st April. Tues 3 June Reinventing the doctor, Dr Moyez Jiwa see below

Annual Tax Appeal Help Cancer Support WA with an end of financial year donation to our Annual Tax Appeal. Help us fund Australia’s only 24 hour cancer support phone line!

June Guest Speaker

Prof. Moyez Jiwa: Reinventing the doctor Professor Moyez Jiwa talks about the need for a human connection within health care. In the drive to ‘measure’ illness and treatments it’s important not to lose sight of other important issues like – Who lives with you and how does cancer affect them? What worries you about this situation? Can you continue to earn a living? How are you coping? There will always be a place for surgery and powerful drugs. However in most circumstances it is the interactions with an interested, attentive, compassionate practitioner that are the most valuable to a patient. Not everything that a human healer offers can be replaced by facts and figures, or enhanced by gadgets or gizmos. The true value of the encounter between doctor and patient cannot be audited. Failure to factor this truth into our attempts to innovate will lead to sterile and inevitably harmful efforts to improve the outcomes for people who come to doctors looking for help. Come along to hear about the reinvention of the doctor. Have your say – includes Q&A session.

Meredith Forder: The Power of Positive Thinking Every moment of our lives we have a choice of interpreting our experiences in one of two ways: glass half empty, or glass half full. Maintaining a positive attitude calls for optimism, and being optimistic requires understanding – understanding that nobody gets through life without loss. No doubt it can be brutal. Adversity can knock us down so hard that we feel like we will never be happy again. But it can also make us stronger and eventually move us towards a future filled with opportunities for growth and happiness. Meredith Forder is a writer, philosopher, stress management consultant and the founder and CEO of Clear Thinking. Meredith offers the essence of eastern philosophy to our western society by delivering knowledge, and ways to overcome the life–threatening epidemics plaguing our modern world – stress, anxiety and depression.

Di Ryman: Feng Shui and Decluttering for Health This fascinating session introduces the ancient art of Feng Shui. Feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui has come to mean good fortune and health. Feng shui is based on the Taoist vision and understanding of nature, particularly on the idea that the land is alive and filled with Chi, or energy. Di Ryman’s has a nursing and business background, and passionately believes feng shui to be another healing modality because it allows people to improve their lives physically, mentally and emotionally. After personally experiencing the profound effects of feng shui, Di decided to train as a Feng Shui consultant. She combines these traditional skills with contemporary advice on space clearing, decluttering and the effects of electromagnetic radiation to help her clients.

5 Day Retreat with Petrea King Monday 17th – Friday 21st November

As part of Cancer Support WA’s 30th anniversary and following on from our Inspired Living Conference, Petrea King will host an inspiring, practical, educational and experiential retreat for men and women living with cancer or other life–threatening illnesses. Participants participate in a range of things including the sharing of personal stories and their journey so far. They will work on practical strategies for sleep, relaxation, wellness and nutrition. Petrea will explain her philosophy of the 4Cs and provide insight into trauma and the language of reaction and response. People will be taught how to meditate and to understand the theory behind meditation. They will realise the impact of their minds upon the healing capacity of their bodies. While the program is rich in content, it is important to realise that there is no agenda for participants. The aim is for each individual to discover personal resources which will strengthen and empower them. People emerge from the program with heightened self–awareness, renewed vigour and confidence, with a unique and personal road map of how to proceed on their way. Petrea King is a well–known author, inspirational speaker, counsellor and workshop leader. She is qualified as a naturopath, herbalist, hypnotherapist, yoga and meditation teacher. In 1983 Petrea was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and was not expected to live. Meditation and the integration of past traumatic experiences became paramount in her recovery, much of which was spent in a monastery near Assisi in Italy. Since then, Petrea has counselled more than 60,000 people living with life–challenging illnesses, grief, loss, trauma and tragedy. Petrea sees crisis as a catalyst for spiritual growth and understanding and as an opportunity for healing and peace.

Wed 17 Dec Christmas Celebration. Cancer Support WA’s volunteers are honoured in a touching Gratitude Ceremony to thank them for their incredible contribution throughout the year at our Annual Christmas Party.

December Guest Speaker

Marion Kickett: Developing Resilience Resilience describes a person’s capacity to cope with changes and challenges, and to bounce back during difficult times. Resilience is especially important when approaching and undergoing diagnosis and medical treatments, and has a proven effect on the outcomes. Dr. Marion Kickett believes the findings of her PhD studies into what builds resilience in successful Aboriginal people will help others to find similar success. Having completed nursing studies and advancing her academic career as part of Curtin University’s Health Innovation Research Institute, she was often asked how she had become a “successful Aboriginal woman”. The notion of resilience interested her as it seemed that Aboriginal people who had made peace with the past achieved greater success. Her PhD earned her not just the honour of being the first Aboriginal student to receive an indigenous scholarship from Healthway WA but a raft of ongoing friendships and role models.

fundraising We understand that cancer is expensive, especially for people undergoing medical treatment, unable to work or seeking complementary therapies. For this reason, our programs are free or greatly subsidised for members to ensure they are accessible by all. Our essential support services are also free including our 24 hour cancer support phone line are also free for anyone in need of support. Currently, our inhouse fundraising efforts contribute more than 70% of the cost of delivering the wonderful activities and services in this program. Fees for service and membership fees contribute less than 5% of the organisation’s overall income. It is through the generous contributions our supporters make to our raffles, mail campaigns and through donations that we are able to deliver our 2014 program and activities. As well as the initiatives outlined in this program we will also be busy during 2014 with the following activities and invite you to contribute whenever you can.

Direct Mail Campaigns We will also undertake a Tax Appeal in June and a Christmas Giving Appeal in December, where we ask our supporters to give a cash donation to support our programs.
