OW Events & Meet Ups
Before the world was turned upside down, we were midway through another wonderful series of OW events. We hosted our 10, 25 and 50 Year Reunions, ran university gatherings up and down the country, put on our annual ice skating event, were delighted to see that OWs were meeting up around the world; New York, Australia, Singapore and elsewhere along with a number of exciting career networking events. Then Covid-19 hit and things didn’t go quite to plan. Sadly, we had to cancel our pre-1956 OW Reunion, the Law and Creative Industries networking evening and our wonderful annual Entrepreneurs Exchange evening. We will of course be re-arranging these events as soon we can, and we hope to see as many of you at them as possible.
None of these events would be possible without our extraordinarily supportive OW community, and we want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all you do and in particular, for your huge involvement in our career networking events. These have gone from strength to strength and we have seen record numbers at these events this year. We have had the pleasure of hosting career industry focused evenings in Finance, Property, Politics, Marketing and PR, Engineering and IT and Insurance. These evenings have been so beneficial for young Wellingtonians, as well as for younger OWs. Thank you so much to all of you that have attended and shared their knowledge and experience, it really is appreciated.

The annual Careers Fair is always a highlight in our programme and this year was no exception. About 50 OWs covering a broad range of industries, professions and occupations came to College on a Saturday morning to offer advice and guidance to 6th form students. It was another wonderful event and we very much hope that we will be able to host our next one in Spring 2020.
This year, due to lockdown and the various restrictions that have been put in place we, like everyone, have had to transition into a purely virtual world in order to deliver as much of our events programme as possible. We launched our Life Beyond Wellington online programme in April which has been hugely successful. The programme consists of fun and inspiring sessions on both life skills as well as more career specific sessions. This programme is more relevant than ever, as it aims to equip students with the skills and understanding about the ‘real’ world so they can shape what they do at College with an eye on their life beyond their time at Wellington.
All of these events, whether virtual or face to face, are so important to the students and young OWs. They help to give them a better idea of the careers they may wish to pursue and how they can go about making that happen, whether it’s advice on which university to go to, the offer of work experience or just to help give them a better insight into the working world. We are extremely lucky to have such a talented and diverse group of OWs who are so willing to give up their time to help.
Like everyone, we sincerely hope that we will be able to return to some semblance of normality before too long and that we will be able to host events again in person something that all of us are looking forward to and when that day comes, we will celebrate in style!
With thanks and very best wishes,
Murray Lindo and The Wellington Community Team
