A MEXICAN CAFE FOR THE 21 ST CENTURY The menu at L-Taco Mexican Cafe ranges from authentic Mexican to traditional Tex-Mex with a few surprises in between. A contemporary vibe and high-tech customer interaction—not to mention delicious food—set this new Stone Oak favorite apart.

L-Taco Mexican Cafe isn’t your mom and dad’s taqueria. This new Stone Oak eatery offers an updated take on the authentic mom-and-pop Mexican restaurants that have made San Antonio famous. Matching its slogan “Let there be fuego,” the cafe has fiery, redwhite-and-yellow interiors that feel ultra-modern with a hiphop vibe. Digital menus blink with 3D graphics. A smartphone app for both iPhone® and AndroidTM allows you to place your orders and save time. The cafe also provides tracking of home deliveries. Alongside excellent Mexican food and Tex-Mex, there’s a lighter side to the menu that includes “tacos” that use lettuce as the shell instead of a tortilla. “We’re a lot more than a taco place,” says Enrique Resendez, managing member of Los Taqueros, LLC, which owns L-Taco. “We’re like a momand-pop shop catering to your every [Mexican food] need. We handle Mexican and Tex Mex and a variety in between.”

“We handle Mexican and Tex Mex and a variety in between.”

—Enrique Resendez, managing member of Los Taqueros, LLC

L-Taco’s contemporary take on Mexican food has impressed guests since the restaurant debuted nine months ago on Stone Oak Parkway at Huebner Road. It recently made the list of three nominees for Best New Restaurant in the San Antonio Express-News 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards. (At press time, winners were yet to be announced.) And its affordable prices will make you shout, “Olé!” Authentic and Contemporary From Mexico himself, Enrique and his team of Mexican nationals bring first-hand knowledge of and love for authentic Mexican fare—dishes like their mothers and grandmothers make. A longtime businessman in the shipping and distribution industry, Enrique also brings business savvy and

4

the power of a Mexico-based marketing team. He’s planning to expand the concept for this new kind of Mexican restaurant across San Antonio and beyond. “We’re trying to be more creative than traditional Mexican restaurants and provide an updated approach,” he says. Under the guidance of General Manager Damian Ortiz, two new locations will open this summer: one at Bandera Road and Eckhart and the other on Nacogdoches Road at Thousand Oaks Drive. Enrique and Damian’s team is exploring locations in the I-10 corridor near North Loop 1604 and the Alamo Ranch area near Sea World, too. “Our vision is to take L-Taco Mexican Cafe across San Antonio, to New Braunfels and Austin, throughout Texas, and beyond,” Enrique says. All future locations will have drive-through windows, so it’s easy and fast to take home authentic, quality Mexican food. What’s on the Menu? L-Taco Mexican Cafe offers irresistible breakfast tacos, plates with beef, pastor, fish and chicken tacos, served with rice and beans, and so much more. Authentic Mexican fare. Barbacoa and menudo are available daily, not just every now and then. Three kinds of 7-inch, homemade tortillas. Choose among a slightly thicker flour tortilla with the Tex-Mex tortilla; a thinner, more buttery tasting (Mexican traditional flour tortilla) or corn tortillas.

Healthy options. “We have a whole healthy side of our menu, very unusual in a Mexican restaurant,” Enrique notes. “And it’s not just unusual, it’s unusual for it to taste this delicious.” The Lunch Bowl Lite offerings, for instance, include a Chicken Quinoa Bowl that mixes poultry and the healthy whole grain with spinach, queso fresco, black beans, and fresh guacamole. Plus, you’ll find a variety of salads, light breakfast options, and more.

Poquito de Todo Plate

An exquisite salsa bar. Try any or all of these six, authentic concoctions. 1) Habanero/Ghost Pepper Salsa. Sample this perfect mix of two of the world’s hottest peppers, combined with secret spices. It’s extremely hot, but irresistible. 2) Roasted Salsa. Made with roasted red peppers and roasted tomatoes, it’s closest to the classic, home-style Mexican Salsa de Molcajete, traditionally made with a mortar and pestle. You’ll feel like you’re in Mexico. 3) Green Salsa. Tangy and hot, this distinctive salsa verde is all about jalapeño. 4) Red Salsa. Mild and tasty, this one’s a great companion for chips. 5) Pico de Gallo. Chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, cilantro, lime juice, and salt create this fresh, chunky topping. 6) Creamy Avocado Salsa. Made only on weekends, this blend of fresh avocados and jalapeños gives you another reason to cheer for the end of the work week.

“We have a whole healthy side of our menu, very unusual in a Mexican restaurant...”

—Enrique Resendez, managing member of Los Taqueros, LLC

As you get to know L-Taco Mexican Café, it’s getting to know the community as an official sponsor of the San Antonio Rampage and San Antonio Stars. It’s also worked with Ronald Reagan High School to sponsor its band, theater troupe, and athletic teams. “We’re proud to start our restaurant in San Antonio, which is a great city with great people, and to have our flagship in the heart of Stone Oak,” Enrique says. “We appreciate our customers so much. Without them, we wouldn’t be growing.”

Pulling Ahead

Ranked No. 2 in his class since his sophomore year, this year’s Ronald Reagan High School valedictorian surged ahead to achieve the coveted 1st place distinction.

ots of students burrow under the covers when the alarm goes off. But Jorge Garza—valedictorian at Ronald Reagan High School—couldn’t wait to get to the classroom. “I found joy in it. I really liked school,” he says. “I personally did not mind waking up and going to school.” He has a grade point average of 116.7 on a 100-point scale, thanks to stellar grades and a multiplier attached to pre-Advanced Placement (AP) and AP classes that boosts his average. But he also enjoys the social aspect of going to class. “I made really great friends. If I didn’t have the social time every now and then, I would burn out,” Jorge says.

He found balance between time with friends, study, part-time work, and community service. Jorge has worked as a cashier at HEB, tutored 7th graders, and worked on staff with a Catholic Hispanic youth group called Iuevenes Credentium. At school, he’s in multiple honor societies, serving as vice president of the math honor society Mu Alpha Theta. He’s volunteered as a member on The Ability Team, which fosters inclusion of students with disabilities, and contributed as a lead competitor in Reagan’s University Interscholastic League Science team. He also has run cross country and participated in the Model United Nations program. The faculty named him an ambassador to the district-wide UNITY conference, which promotes diversity. Last year he won a National Advanced Placement Scholar Award, just one of several academic awards. When the final class rankings came out in January, Jorge’s name was at the top of the list, after several years of being ranked No. 2. “I just really wanted to be 1st,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to go to [the University of Texas at Austin], and valedictorians get a scholarship there.” That scholarship grants him the first year of tuition free, and he has another $20,000 scholarship from the McCombs School of Business at UT. He hopes for more financial awards with a good score on the National Spanish Exam.

PHYSICIAN PROFILE

Meet a Carpenter of the Body The operating room becomes a workshop for this sports surgery specialist and orthopaedic surgeon. By Jennifer Chappell Smith

hen Dr. Jamie L. Lynch and husband Eric Fowler rehab W their San Antonio home, they share the power tools. After all, she has plenty of experience using them to repair her

patients’ bones and joints. “My meticulous attention to detail carries over from the operating room and may annoy [my husband] slightly,” she says. “I measure three times to cut once.” The Chicago-area native has a heart for getting people off the couch and back onto the playing field, the jogging path, the sidewalk. “[Orthopaedic surgeons] get to fix people every day,” says Lynch, who’s four years into building her practice at Stone Oak’s Northeast Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine. “You’re a carpenter of the body.” A Different Path As she completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern in Chicago, most assumed she’d specialize in traditional areas for women, like pediatrics or hands. But she developed a passion for sports medicine and the shoulder, her “favorite joint.” Only five female orthopaedic surgeons practice in San Antonio, Lynch says, and she’s the city’s sole female sports medicine shoulder specialist. She’s long prowled sidelines, as an athlete and as a doctor. Her fellowship director at a Michigan hospital doubled as a team physician for the Detroit Lions. “I got to see high-level athletes going through the same injuries that I’ve seen in weekend warriors and in kids, but at an extreme level, to see how quickly you can get someone back, or how devastating an injury can be,” she says. As much as she likes doing surgery, Lynch strives to educate patients first. “I always tell people, ‘It’s your shoulder, or it’s your knee. It’s not your heart. You don’t have to have surgery, ever,’” she says, though she’s happy to get their joints working properly again. She also may prescribe physical therapy or preventative programs to help young athletes avoid surgery. “I’m a very conservative surgeon, but I know when it’s time to go to the operating room,” she says. She does her share of traumatic injury repair work, too. A Strong Role Model Lynch enjoys exposing the young women she treats to the field of sports medicine, a career she didn’t realize was an option as she was growing up. A new mom to 3-month-old daughter Olivia, Lynch now has another little girl to influence with her example of a strong woman who discovered the thrill of fixing bones and joints. “This stuff ’s amazing,” she says. “Every day I’m thankful for what I get to do.”

Dr. Jamie L. Lynch has a passion for helping young and old athletes at all skill levels to regain their active lifestyles.

REAL ESTATE TIP

How to Sell Your House This Summer Smart strategies can help you get the buyer you’ve been waiting for.

lberto Espinoza, a Realtor® with Home Team of America in San Antonio, says sellers A often fail to do the simple things. “Paint doesn’t cost much,” he says, urging would-be sellers to touch up scuffs on the walls and baseboards. Try simple strategies that Espinoza says can improve your chances of getting an offer soon. The National Association of Realtors® forecasts a stellar year for home sales in 2016, and Realtor.com® data shows that the prime home buying season usually reaches a peak in June. There’s no time to lose. Fix Interiors Fast

Declutter and remove personal touches. • Take down personal picture frames. • Remove sports memorabilia. Your buyer, sadly, may not pull for the Spurs. • Declutter kitchen counters. Put cooking utensils and toasters out of sight. • Roll fluffy, white towels in the bathrooms, à la your favorite show on HGTV. • Break down a sectional sofa to just a couple of pieces and store extra pieces.

Create Curb Appeal

A few hundred dollars at a home store can make all the difference. • Invest in flowering plants or ferns for porches and patios. • Prune trees and keep grass mowed. • Add mulch to flower beds. • Stage the outdoor areas, with Adirondacks near the fire pit or bright towels by the pool. • Power wash the pool surround.

Keep Things Cool

On hot Stone Oak days, make your home an oasis. • Leave behind a pitcher of iced tea or lemonade on the kitchen counter. • Lower the air conditioner a few notches and turn on ceiling fans.

Protect Fido from Summer Heat

Summer temperatures can pose dangers to our furry friends.

D

ogs are less efficient at cooling themselves and run at a higher temperature than humans, so they need your help to stay cool! This July, Camp Bow Wow® is raising awareness on the importance of keeping your four-legged companions safe in the hot summer months. Keep reading for tips, tricks and other important information! Just like us, our furry companions suffer from overheating, dehydration, and sunburn during the sizzling summer months. Shortnosed and thick-coated breeds, puppies, seniors, and dogs with health problems are more susceptible to the soaring temperatures. Here are the five rules of summer to keep your pet paws-itively happy and cool. 1. Give your pet easy access to cool water and shade. Regularly fill the water bowl with fresh, cool water, provide a shady area in the yard such as a doghouse, and bring your pooch inside during the hottest hours of the day or take your dog to daycare with climate control facility. 2. Protect your pup from sunburn. Pale, short-haired dogs, and pups with a short summer hairdo are more prone to sunburn, so use a sunscreen labeled for animal use on the nose and ear tips. 3. Keep those paws off hot surfaces. Limit walks to the early morning or evening. 4. Never ever leave your pet alone in the car. Simply cracking the windows isn’t enough because the glass collects light and traps heat. 5. Watch out for signs of heatstroke. These include hard panting, staring, anxious facial expressions, warm skin, refusal to obey commands by owner, vomiting, collapse and rapid heartbeat. If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, gradually lower their body temperature by moving them into shade or air-conditioning or

applying cold packs to his head, neck or belly. Then go to the vet immediately! Heatstroke can lead to brain and organ damage, heart failure, and even death. How we keep dogs cool at Camp We’re always monitoring the safety and wellbeing of our Campers, and in the summer months we’re diligent at checking all of our Campers to make sure they’re staying hydrated and cool. Our facility is climate controlled, and even with indoor/outdoor access we can limit outdoor play during extreme temperatures. We also have our famous bone-shaped pools out in the play yards to keep everyone cool and happy. Some dogs are too distracted with playing to take a break to cool off so we do have private cabins available for those who need a cot and a separate water bowl.

Gotta Wear Shades

More than a fashion statement, sunglasses protect your eyes from potentially permanent damage. Choose wisely. By Dr. Monica Allison, O.D., Stone Oak Vision Source lamorous Jackie O-style frames. Cat eye shapes. Geometric designs. Whatever style of sunglasses you prefer, remember that shades are about more than style. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from damaging ultra violet (UV) rays and to reduce the risk of cataracts. They also shield the skin around your eyes from sun exposure, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

G

When it comes to picking the right sunglasses, our team of experts at Stone Oak Vision Source can help you: • Get the right prescription if you need one. • Look at options for state-of-art lenses, including polarized lenses and anti-glare lenses. • Select a pair from our broad assortment of frames. Keep in mind that damaging UV rays from sunlight are the greatest during the late spring and early summer in North America, according to the CDC. But you should wear sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays year round for full protection, recommends both the CDC and The American Cancer Society. And remember that the dangerous rays can affect your eyes even on cloudy days. More than a prescription Beyond prescription lenses that correct your vision, technology can help you see better, especially on bright, sunny days. You can choose: • Polarized Lenses. These types of lenses provide richer colors and reduce squinting, which can cause eye fatigue. • Anti-Reflective Lenses. Reflections off of surfaces can reduce the light needed for optimal vision by seven to 14 percent. Lenses for sunglasses and regular frames can be treated to prevent that reflection, helping you to see your best.

Learning New Tricks The decades can’t slow down this Stone Oak resident and World War II veteran. He survived mortar attacks and 30 years as an educator before taking up biking and even swimming well into his senior years.

A

fter landing on Okinawa, Japan, during World War II, U.S. Marine Joe Glavan of Warren, Ohio, did not want to give up the foxhole he had just dug. But his commanding officer ordered him and a fellow Marine to turn it over to two U.S. Naval officers. The pair spent the night in a cave as Japanese shells fell and learned the next day that their foxhole had taken a direct hit. Both Naval officers died. “I still get goosebumps when I think of that,” Joe says. “We had other close calls, but that one stuck with me. They were young men just like myself.” He survived 44 months in the Marine Corps, witnessing a Japanese surrender ceremony in China and glimpsing the Great Wall of China from a small village—quite a new view for a Midwesterner who had volunteered at 17. “My world opened up when I joined the Marines,” he says. Now 91, he enjoys life at Independence Hill Retirement and Resort Community in Stone Oak. “I feel like I’m on a cruise ship,” he says. He comes and goes from his cozy apartment, enjoying the community’s activities. A portrait of his wife Anne, who died eight years ago, hangs in his bedroom. The couple met at Hiram College in Ohio after WWII, settled in Pueblo, Colorado, and started a family. Joe had a 30-year career as an educator, school psychologist, and, ultimately, assistant superintendent of schools. The Glavans tried retirement in Florida, where Joe took up cycling in his 70s—a hobby he continued after the couple headed to San Antonio to live closer to family. “I finally gave it up,” he says. “I was in my 80s.” Joe Glavan still misses his wife Anne, who died eight years ago.
