WELLBEING COMPREHENSIVE COURSE GUIDE Receive guidelines for leading intention, gratitude and loving-kindness meditations Examine the application of mindfulness for emotions like grief, anxiety and depression Understand the importance of “stillness” and “spaciousness”

MODULE 2: GUIDED IMAGERY & CONTEMPLATION

MEDITATION TEACHER TRAINING IMMERSIONS Deepen your own meditation practice and become fully equipped to help others learn to meditate. Based on the combined wisdom of Dr Ian Gawler, Paul Bedson and the Yarra Valley Living Centre’s 30plus years of meditation teachings, this Meditation Teacher Training course, offered over two separate retreat immersions, is a world-class, experiential learning experience. Interactive in nature, this meditation training offers the knowledge, insight and support of four highly experienced trainers. Dr Ian Gawler started one of Australia’s first meditation teaching programs in 1988 and is an authority in the field. He has written five bestselling books on meditation including Meditation: An In-depth Guide, which he co-authored with Paul Bedson. Dr Ruth Gawler is the president of the Meditation Association of Australia and, along with both Paul and Maia Bedson, has decades of experience in running meditation retreats and workshops. While many meditation teacher trainees complete Module 1 and then Module 2, you may choose to do either module independently or in any order. Completing both modules will meet the training requirements for Provisional Membership of the peak meditation teacher’s professional body, the Meditation Association of Australia (formally ATMA). As well as detailed training sessions, discussion opportunities and plenty of experiential practice, trainees also

receive a comprehensive course manual, which includes a session-by-session reference guide for facilitating your own meditation courses.

MODULE 1: MINDFULNESSBASED STILLNESS MEDITATION 4-night immersion, Monday–Friday Facilitated by Paul and Maia Bedson and running three times yearly, this training immersion focuses on acquiring the skills to facilitate an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) course. MBSM gives more depth and profundity to the “popularised” teaching of mindfulness. In addition to understanding the physiology and biochemistry of the stress and relaxation responses, MBSM offers an emotional component, which helps to develop selfcompassion, emotional intelligence and resilience, as well as a spiritual aspect, which emphasises the stillness that underpins mindfulness meditation. Topics covered: Practical teaching and leading of mindfulness-based stillness meditation Study the benefits of mindfulness meditation for healing, personal development and spirituality Learn about the links between meditation, neuroscience and neuroplasticity Review the stress and relaxation responses, and their impact on health Gain an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the thinking mind

4-night immersion, Monday–Friday Facilitated by Drs Ian and Ruth Gawler and running twice yearly, this training immersion focuses on developing the skills to facilitate two four-week courses: one focusing on contemplation meditation, the other on guided imagery. In our busy, modern world, contemplative meditation can be invaluable: it enables us to think things though, overcome confusion, find clarity with decisionmaking and access insight and inner wisdom in a practical and reliable way. Guided imagery can help to access the power of the mind more directly and effectively for greater creativity, productivity, healing and inner peace. Topics covered: Practical teaching and leading of contemplation and guided imagery meditations Study the benefits of contemplation and guided imagery for healing, personal development and spirituality Appreciate how contemplation can be used in the search for meaning and to gain meaningful answers to the age-old philosophical questions like “Who am I?” Learn how contemplation techniques can be used to meet the needs of modern problem-solving, increase creativity and lead to powerful insights Understand the strengths and limitations of “positive thinking” and how to manage client safety when teaching contemplation and guided imagery Understand and learn how to apply the six primary uses for guided imagery Review the latest news in meditation, neuroscience and neuroplasticity Understand the importance of “stillness” and “spaciousness” and how they support the practices of contemplation and guided imagery

LEARN WITH US Costs start from AU$1990 per person (including GST), depending on your choice of accommodation, and cover all elements of the program including a course manual, delicious organic plantbased meals, snacks and herbal teas. WELLBEING COMPREHENSIVE COURSE GUIDE

RMIT’S MYOTHERAPY & REMEDIAL MASSAGE PROGRAMS Whether you want to work in a remote village in India, under the circus big top, behind the scenes at the ballet or on the sidelines of a sporting ground, RMIT’s complementary medicine programs in myotherapy and remedial massage can take you there. Earlier this year, 18 RMIT myotherapy and remedial massage students took their training to Udaipur, the “City of Lakes”, in India. With the help of translators, over two weeks the students were challenged with queues of patients with injuries ranging from being hit by a buffalo to electrocution. The experience was life changing and a striking contrast to the RMIT city clinic with views of Melbourne’s CBD, where common complaints include neck and shoulder pain from sitting in front of computers.

SO WHAT IS REMEDIAL MASSAGE & MYOTHERAPY? Remedial massage and myotherapy is all about using postural, palpation and movement testing to assess, treat and prevent problems relating to the soft tissue of the body as well as muscular, facial and skeletal systems.

WHAT DO REMEDIAL MASSEURS & MYOTHERAPISTS DO? Remedial massage therapists and myotherapists treat soft tissues and such as muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments to improve function and assist healing. They assess and treat specific injuries and other soft-tissue dysfunction and provide advice. They 24 | WELLBEING.COM.AU

can enhance performance and prevent injury as well as provide advice on stretching exercises and relaxation techniques.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMEDIAL MASSAGE & MYOTHERAPY? Remedial masseurs treat clients using a variety of techniques to reduce and relieve muscular tension and aid relaxation. They generally use only their hands with the aid of oils or myofascial cupping. Myotherapists use a broad range of techniques including massage, myofascial tension techniques, dry needling, muscle energy techniques, neurodynamics, heat treatment and cupping to diagnose and treat chronic, complex or acute injuries and conditions. To study the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy, students must first complete the Diploma of Remedial Massage to build their knowledge and understanding of muscular treatments, anatomy, physiology and pathology. The myotherapy program extends this knowledge with hands-on techniques and also incorporates cupping, dry-needling, stretching and exercise prescription. Students study in both the classroom and in a supervised practice environment in the city clinic on campus. The clinic environment allows students to perform assessments and develop treatment plans for patients. Students are encouraged to practise the different treatments as they are

learning, providing immediate feedback on their techniques. As well as international placement opportunities, RMIT has strong industry connections, allowing students to work with elite athletes and performers such as local junior AFL teams, the Melbourne United Basketball club, Circus Oz and the Australian Ballet. There are also healthrelated placements with rehabilitation and community health centres. Graduates of the programs have gone on to open their own clinics and join existing clinics, and are now working with professional and local sporting teams. There are also opportunities in education, community healthcare services, social welfare, sales and health retreats. Applications for 2017 are now open for the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy and the Diploma of Remedial Massage. Classes are held at the RMIT Melbourne city campus on Franklin Street. Students must hold a valid Working with Children Check prior to undertaking the placement components of these courses. The remedial and myotherapy clinics are open to the public for treatment. ENDEAVOUR COLLEGE The road to a stellar media career isn’t an easy one, as Lola Berry knows. She worked three jobs to buy a video camera to get her dream off the ground. Armed with the new equipment, she made the daily trek to local banana and macadamia plantations and filmed herself talking about good food. Lola quickly built a YouTube following based on her unique message and quirky style and the rest is history. She now shares her good food message across the globe. Her third successful book, The 20/20 Diet Cookbook, includes 100 of her paleo-inspired recipes, which helped her lose 20 kilograms in 20 weeks. “In an earlier life I worked as a fashion stylist, makeup artist and DJ and fell into an unhealthy lifestyle,” Lola says. “I tried a detox, which left me healthy with glowing skin. It left me hungry to learn everything I could about nutrition and to share that knowledge.” Lola’s degree in nutritional medicine and her ability to connect with people has seen her stride forward. Her media star continues to rise and she is now an ambassador for the not-for-profit “modern meditation” program The Smiling Mind. She says, “I want to remind people that it is so important to choose to put your health first. When this happens, watch how your world shines.”

Lola Berry studied a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine) at Endeavour College of Natural Health. If you’re interested in also turning your passion for food and nutrition into a thriving career, here are five reasons to choose Endeavour: Nationally accredited courses The College is accredited by the Australian government to offer Bachelor of Health Science degree-level programs specialising in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine, Naturopathy, Acupuncture and Myotherapy. The curriculum for these programs was developed by the College in consultation with external industry stakeholders and is subject to a rigorous accreditation and registration process managed by the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA).

WELLBEING COMPREHENSIVE COURSE GUIDE

AUSTRALIAN NATURAL THERAPISTS ASSOCIATION (ANTA) ANTA ... it’s your choice, naturally. Significant changes have occurred in course recognition that prospective students need to be aware of. It is essential students enrol in accredited practitioner courses recognised by ANTA and also recognised by health funds for provider registration purposes. Government-accredited Health Training Package Advanced Diploma courses in Naturopathy, Nutrition, Western Herbal Medicine and Homeopathy are in teach-out mode until December 2018 and enrolments in these courses ceased in December 2015. Some colleges are now offering non-government-accredited, nonhealth-training-package Advanced Diploma courses in Naturopathy, Nutrition, Western Herbal Medicine and Homeopathy. ANTA recommends students should avoid these courses if they wish to commence practice. Such courses are not recognised by associations and are not recognised by health funds for provider recognition. With the cessation of governmentaccredited Advanced Diploma Health Training Package courses, the new minimum educational standard for

Naturopathy, Nutrition, Western Herbal Medicine and Homeopathy is now Bachelor degree level. Several colleges offer Bachelor degree courses and these have been assessed by ANTA. All of these courses are listed online at anta.com.au. Another significant change has also occurred with Diploma qualifications for Remedial Massage, Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage. WELLBEING COMPREHENSIVE COURSE GUIDE

FENG SHUI RESEARCH CENTRE Imagine walking into someone’s home and advising on specific colours for the décor, determining which rooms are best for each family member or even being able to tell what’s happening in someone’s life, all by looking at their feng shui? Perhaps you wish to specialise in helping clients find their dream home? Or to advise on the design of new buildings or architectural and renovation plans? Experience the feeling of satisfaction when you are able to assist your clients in achieving their goals, whether it’s attracting their soul mate, creating a successful business, improving their health, overcoming problems and difficulties or even creating the right conditions for a feng shui baby! You may prefer to concentrate your skills on commercial work, advising businesses on how to become more successful using feng shui in the design of their offices or with site selection. This is the role of a professional feng shui consultant. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese building and town-planning tool. Its origins can be traced to the Zhou Dynasty, about 4000 years ago, and it was first used to identify favourable locations for the emperor’s palace, capital city and villages. In Asia, corporate headquarters and the homes of business tycoons, celebrities and the wealthy are located, oriented, designed and decorated using feng shui. In the West, feng shui is often used to “fix” a home when the occupants are having problems that, no matter what they do, won’t go away.

Formulae calculated with the feng shui compass, called a luo pan, are used to analyse the qi (energy) pattern of a building, which has a major impact on the life experience of the occupants. Problems to do with health, relationships or a lack of abundance can often be the result of bad feng shui. Recommendations such as reassigning room usage, changing colour scheme, adding decorator objects, applying sounds and introducing water features are used to maximise the positive aspects and to mitigate the undesirable aspects of a building. Realising your dream of becoming a professional feng shui consultant starts with a qualified, experienced teacher — and George Bennis and Jodi Brunner are two such people. George Bennis is the director of The Feng Shui Advantage and Feng Shui Courses Online. In 2007, after 14 years of study and practice, he was awarded the title Master of Feng Shui by Master Joseph Yu. George has delivered lectures to the Queensland University of Technology’s school of interior design and built environment, The Queensland Master Builders Association, The Queensland Interior Decorators Association and the Association of Feng Shui Consultants (AFSC). He is currently the education officer of the AFSC and the principal of Feng Shui Courses Online. The Feng Shui Research Centre (FSRC) is an internationally renowned feng shui education centre that was founded by Master Joseph Yu, who has a background in teaching

Mathematics and Physics at the University of Hong Kong. Together, Master George and Master Jodi are the only FSRC-accredited Feng Shui Masters in Australia. Now that Master Joseph has retired, he has entrusted his highest-qualified students to teach his courses. Since 2000, Master Jodi has taught the FSRC’s Feng Shui Professional Course and Business Feng Shui, written by Master Joseph, through which thousands of international students have become competent feng shui consultants. Master Jodi is a pioneer in the feng shui industry and is often sought out by the media. Jodi, the past president of the AFSC, has spoken at conferences in Australia, Asia, the UK, the US and South America, and has written several books. Her articles have appeared in WellBeing and have also been published in countries such as Singapore, Russia and UK. Other courses from Master Jodi, both live and online, include Practitioner Training, Feng Shui Mentoring and Mian Xiang (Face Reading). One advantage of studying with the FSRC is its international online forum, which has run since the FSRC was founded in 1998. Students who attend training are invited to join teachers and students in Australia and overseas in this online forum. It allows you to share case studies, ask questions and make genuine friends in the international FSRC community. AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF SPORTS THERAPY Bringing education and industry together. The Australian College of Sports Therapy (ACST) was first established in 1997 by Dr Charles Meisner with the goal of founding an institute of learning that provided education and the promotion of health in the areas of sports and muscular-skeletal therapies. Since then, it has been dedicated to the service of the sporting and active community through the education of knowledgeable, skilled and ethical allied health practitioners. In its initial concept, the Sports Therapy program was envisioned as bridging the gap between the fitness and rehabilitative industries. This has formed part of ACST’s philosophy and is embedded in its core values as it endeavours to bring education and industry together. So are you looking to have influence as a health professional? You have thousands of courses at your fingertips, but how do you choose the right course that is going to provide you with the necessary skills to succeed and differentiate yourself as a practitioner? All of the programs at ACST have been tailored to suit the needs of its very busy 30 | WELLBEING.COM.AU

student cohort with blended learning options. This provides an online and on-campus experience that has been contextualised to suit industry demands and skill requirements. It is also perfect for ACST’s change-of-career students as it allows them time to pursue their current lifestyle commitments while upskilling in a new industry. ACST’s Remedial Therapy program allows you to become a nationally recognised remedial therapist in 12 months. The learning journey includes a 200-hour placement in the ACST campus clinic, allowing students to experience running their practice in a supervised environment. The Clinic is open to the public and student therapists learn to book, treat and follow up their clients in preparation for the workplace. Upon graduation, students can register with an association and get insurance to practise with a provider number. This is important to ACST as it allows its practitioners to tap into the private health sector, supporting their businesses and making it affordable for the public. As a small organisation, ACST can be nimble, allowing for small class sizes so

that its students can have one-on-one experiences. All of the ACST academic staff run their own private businesses, giving students real insight to industry and a professional learning experience. As an education provider, ACST’s investment isn’t only in the quality of learning and compliance standards, it’s also in the end result — the skills that are going to help graduating students get jobs! This is where VET education can have a significant influence. And this is where the satisfaction lies for ACST staff: when they see a student go through a life-changing learning journey and then walk away with a career prospect or startup business. It is this cycle that gives education its beauty as it has a direct influence on industry and the community. T: 1300 227 800 E: enquiries@sportstherapy.edu.au W: sportstherapy.edu.au

STUDY SHIATSU & ORIENTAL THERAPIES IN 2017 The Australian Shiatsu College is now taking expressions of interest for the 2017 Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies (HLT52215). Founded in Melbourne in 1985, the College has a unique history in the world of complementary healing practices by integrating the Japanesedeveloped harmonising therapy, shiatsu, with the Chinese medical theory from which it originated. Shiatsu, which translates as “finger pressure”, is a modality that

incorporates the use of a range of techniques to apply pressure over various parts of the body and meridians to affect a therapeutic result. A shiatsu treatment is generally given on a futon on the floor with the client remaining fully clothed. The treatment may also incorporate supporting oriental therapies such as moxibustion, cupping, stretches and lifestyle advice. Because shiatsu works on many levels and affects the internal organs, muscles and joints and different systems of the body, there are a vast range of conditions that respond well to shiatsu treatments. At the College, the main academic focus is the nationally accredited Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies (HLT52215). This course is Austudy approved and delivered on-site at the College in Brunswick, Melbourne. Also available are subjects such as the popular Zen Shiatsu that can be completed as individual short course units (where no prerequisites are required). The College is fully equipped with educational spaces, clinical treatment space, communal kitchen and areas for students to come together informally on site. The College has a strong community presence, with a weekly student clinic open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays by appointment. A variety of yoga, tai chi and meditation classes also run throughout the week. To find out more about shiatsu or courses and classes at the Australian Shiatsu College, visit an upcoming open day and experience some shiatsu for free. Next Open Days: 2-5pm on Sunday, October 16, 2016, and Sunday, January 29, 2017. T: +61 3 9387 1161 | E: info@australianshiatsu college.com.au | W: australianshiatsucollege.com.au

ADD DRAMATHERAPY TO YOUR PRACTICE If you met Matt, the first thing you’d notice would be his dark brown eyes. But they’d rarely meet your gaze. Matt has Autism Spectrum Disorder and social interactions are difficult for him. He also struggles with repetitive behaviours and often resists trying new things. His mother says he often doesn’t appear to understand if other kids are feeling happy or annoyed, which leads to awkward and difficult relationships with his peers. Matt is happiest when he is reading alone in his room. But, during a dramatherapy group, you might see Matt in a different way. Dramatherapy is the use of drama and theatre techniques in order to meet therapeutic goals. It is a growing field that helps tap into creativity and self-expression, giving people the opportunity to problem solve, express feelings and interact socially in a new way. People with Autism Spectrum Disorders aren’t the only ones who can benefit from dramatherapy. It can be used in a range of settings, such as schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, prisons and group homes. Using improvisation, storytelling and role play, dramatherapy encourages people to try new behaviours and get immediate feedback. Remember Matt? During a dramatherapy exercise, Matt and his classmate Jeff practise making and identifying different facial expressions. They’re encouraged to use exaggerated body language and to include lines from their favourite movies and TV shows. This mix of familiar and creative gives Matt enough security to try out new skills. Matt’s mother says she can see his improvement when she watches him play with his siblings. His self-confidence grows the more positive feedback he receives. IKON is Australia’s leading provider of art therapy training, which incorporates dramatherapy.
