grottos Christmas would not be the same without a visit to see Father Christmas in his grotto and winter wonderland, adding that extra bit of magic for little ones.

We have searched high and low for winter wonderland adventures for the family this Christmas. Luckily Yorkshire is always at the top of Santa’s list, making time to visit all four corners of the county in December and this year is no exception.

At Piglets Adventure Farm near York, jump aboard the magical sleigh ride where you will be whisked away to the woodland village for a truly unforgettable experience. Travel through trees and twinkling lights to Santa’s woodland village where you will be greeted by Mrs Claus and taken to see Santa in his grotto. There you will receive a magic key to unlock his amazing toy shop to choose your perfect gift.

Enter the magical woodland and be greeted by the elves at Santa’s Grotto. They’ll give you a magic gold coin to give to Santa that lets him know if you’ve been naughty or nice. Stockeld also has other various festive activities, take a magical trip around the illuminated enchanted forest and maze, explore the adventure playground and journey through the forest on the Nordic ski trail and don’t forget ice skating too!

For an enchanting grotto experience, Cannon Hall Farm have had a little help from the North Pole to create a truly magical experience that is sure to delight and dazzle. Enjoy a Christmas sing-along with Rudolph and the elves or for something extra special enjoy breakfast or lunch with Santa. Baby it’s cold outside As the cold starts to bite you’ll want to find your way indoors, that doesn’t mean an end to festive fun though, as Yorkshire has a whole host of things to see and do in wonderful indoor settings.

Visit Castle Howard, near York this festive season for their special Twelve Days of Christmas spectacle. Here you will experience their magnificent decorations as you journey through the house’s grand rooms. Open fires, candlelight and live music will evoke all that you love about this special time of year, with the iconic 25-foot traditional Christmas tree adorned with over 3,000 baubles providing a breathtaking highlight in the Great Hall.

A visit to the fascinating country house Burton Constable Hall, East Yorkshire offers the perfect chance to lift your spirits for the festive season. The Deep in Hull is home to some cute little critters for whom it is always winter, penguins!

Enter the Kingdom of Ice and get a feel for what it is like to visit the polar oceans by touching the real ice walls. With opportunities to view the penguins from different areas, you can enjoy watching them both above and below the water as they play together in this wintery wonderland.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, York The North of England’s largest and best-loved outdoor ice rink, with a unique collection of vintage funfair rides and games stalls. Booking is recommended for skating at The Ice Factor, as well as visits to Santa’s grotto. Guests will find his log cabin set at the end of a Christmas tree walk.

Victorian Weekend, Robin Hood’s Bay From 7 - 9 December head to the coast in your finest Victorian costume for a magical weekend of fun and festive frolics. Take part in the costume competition, welly throwing on the beach, Victorian games, a sheep hunt and a chance to see Santa too. With a flurry of Christmas decorations from, Christmas trees, festive wreaths and festive songs playing everywhere you go.

Taking place in York Minster’s awe-inspiring Nave, the York Minster Choir perform a mixture of classical and popular Christmas music, with the chance for the audience to join in with Christmas carols.

The annual family carol concert takes place on Sunday 9 December at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden. Head down to the abbey where the service takes place in the atmospheric cellarium.

Including special seasonal readings by celebrity guests, the concerts take place on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 December, it’s the perfect start to the festive season.

International flights connect Yorkshire to the rest of the world, as well as UK flights from Aberdeen, Belfast, London Heathrow, Newquay and Southampton to Leeds-Bradford Yorkshire’s Airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Humberside Airport and Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Yorkshire’s cities and market towns are easy to get to from other parts of the country. Travel to Yorkshire with high-speed trains from either London or Edinburgh in less than two hours with LNER and Grand Central services.

You can also get to Yorkshire by train from the North West with First TransPennine Express, who offer direct services into the county from Liverpool and Manchester. Northern Rail also offer direct services to Yorkshire from the North West.

Yorkshire by road Britain’s biggest and fastest highways cross Yorkshire, making getting here by car or by coach very simple. For details of the quickest (or the most scenic) driving routes see the AA or RAC websites www.theaa.com and www.rac.co.uk. Plan a journey online with Arriva, who have buses running across Yorkshire on a regular basis.
